Bus hit by explosion - Moratuwa / Katubedda road

A public transport bus ( 29 SRI 1895) was hit by an explosion today morning causing heavy civilian casualties. The bus was caught in the explosion while it was on the move on 255 bus route, at a location between Piliyandela and Katubedda.

Update: At least 20 killed and over 60 injured.

The blast bears all hallmarks of a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attack.

  3. my thoughts are with those affected. hopefully the death count will stop at this and everyone injured will walk home recovered.

there seems to be many bombers who can attack whenever terrorist leaders want them to. also they seem to have a huge stock of bombs. nothing of this sort happened when there were large scale disappearances. it should be expected that terrorists will kill civilians and the govt. should use whatever ways effective to stop them. in addition to security measures already in place, higher number of interrogations must happen, random checks using sniffer dogs for bombs. public vigilance is the best remedy, though.

stoping DPU attacks is not the way to go. if we stop DPU attacks now, terrorists will know what to do next. when they want money, releasing a suspect, removing a SLA camp, removing a checkpoint or ANYTHING, they will simply bomb civilians and get their demands.

terrorists seem to be working hard for another 1983. it must be stopped at all cost. tougher retaliation is the only practical remedy, unfortunately. that is the only language terrorists understand.

  4. There's no alternative. The public should rise to the occasion. There must be some protocol devised for the travellers.
    Guys, lets talk about this.
How about making it mandatory for the conductor to check all bagages? Is this practical? How about travelling police checking units? They get on to a bus and do the checking while the bus travels. So, there will be no delays. They'll be like those bus ticket checkers. Any other ideas?
I prefer a mechanism where the general public take the initiative. But I can't think of a good solution as teras might take that initiative themselves!!

At least 21 people were killed and 55 were injured.

  9. Every thing happening to a pre plan.
Ehether it is DPU or LTTE, they will kill civilians, untill it becomes a norm in south and to IC, that any colateral damages to civilians in wanni ro death of tigers in civilian clothing, will have have devastating imapact on innocent civilians in the south or Jaffna.

This is what exactly happening in Israel and palasthene.

IC used to make silent justifications of killing by israel in retaliation to hamas attakes.

If you see the patterns of bomb incidents, there were several occations, around motaruwa area.
Reason is , there is a big student population, from north staying around the area.
One culprit is enough to put all good students in danger.

  10. Could have been twice as bad as a 2.4 kg IED was found in a transformer in Ragama. We have been "lucky" this year as about half the explosive devices have been uncovered before they were let off.

This is not the time to protect human right or media freedom,
that should be secondary thing this is the time to protect human lives that is number 1.

people who lost their lives in this incident had right to live not that some media and people talking other human rights.

Mr. Sarath N Silva should think twice when he order some justics about human right in this situation

LTTE warns of 'bloodbath' in Sri Lanka

    Associated Press
Posted online: Monday, March 05, 2007 at 1532 hours IST

The Tamil Tiger rebels on Monday warned of a "bloodbath" if the international community fails to stop Sri Lankan military's continued offensive into rebel-held areas.

The warning came during a meeting between Norwegian ambassador Hans Brattskar and SP Thamilselvan, the Tamil rebel political chief, in Kilinochchi, the de-facto rebel headquarters, the rebels said in a statement e-mailed to Colombo-based media organisations.

  15. Whether you call this a bloodbath or not, the LTTE Barbarians are spending their last few months on the earth..

  16. LTTE is using all of there resources to make human rights issue by killing civilians to gain advantage as they cannot win the war.

we need to build more awareness among ourself to protect us and i think we all have to help everyone.

Also seems to be LTTE have changed the bus bomb strategy to clamore to be place road side as civilians are more alerted inside the bus.

    ReplyDelete
  18. crime,

    this is the problem.

bloody tigers are conditioned that causing "bloodbaths" is the way to get their demands.

should we stop attacking them hoping that they won't attack us?

then what if they demanded money/tamil elam, releasing a suspect, removing a SLA camp, removing a checkpoint or ANYTHING ?

this is a never ending cycle. the monkey presses the button and gets a banana.

tigers must be taught in their language that they will pay dearely if they attempt this type of attacks.

    andare,
correct. these attacks attract the IC which is very dangerous and which is what the LTTE wants.

these must be stopped to hell with human rights. the right to life of all people is more important than human rights of a few thousand "suspects". we have again blundered our priorities.

in 2007 march although that cripple promised bloodbaths he couldn't carry it out. all his agents disappeared.

things changed in late 2007 and the govt. started other means like rewards for suicide bombers, etc. which proved disastrous.

the sooner we get back to TRIED AND TESTED methods the less will be casualties.

  19. Thumbs up to Sarath N. Silva, Human Rights Organizations and Mr.Ranil. Thanks so much for helping LTTE to kill our relatives and friends.

The patience of Sinhalese is amazing.

How many bombs does LTTE need to finish off Sinhalese?

We know dat we can be killed in a bomb at anytime. But u all terrorists and their supporters remember dat we too r ready for anything. Our minds are tougher than u think and we r not scared of being killed. If our relatives and friends have gone through the same pain we too can face it. So bring them on u bastards.

We are not far away from seeing Suicide Bombers coming from Sinhalese.

And everyday we have to take a chance on our lifes. there is no other solution, stoping the war now will not bring this problem to an end.. only thing it would do is
    MAKE THOSE LTTE PIGS HAPPY

SO SLDF have to push and finish this no matter what that, then we can look for new future...

Sihaleese, Tamil, Muslims, we all have to be united and put this terrorism to an end for good..

  47. I am Sinhala. I want Peace. I want less killing. We started this by terrorizing tamils starting with the 1958 riots. We must stop it by adopting a policy of non-violence. It is time to be Buddhist again, for real.

    ReplyDelete
  48. well said Malin. We know dat we might be killed at any moment. If we get killed make them pay dearly. That's all what we want from our armed forces. We have to finish this now somehow. We cannot let our future generations face the same disastrous situation.

  49. "No doubt that this was done by one of the LTTE terrorists studying at the Uni."

Surely there is a lot of doubt. Or are the such numbskulls to plant bombs where they live. Do anyone one with a semblance of common sense belive that the bombers will explode a bomp in an area which they live when they know for sure the most common action taken by police is to round up the tamils around the area and take them into custody?

If LTTE were so dumb we would have won this war long time ago.

By the way moshe the "TRIED AND TESTED methods" you say are being used. There was a letup sometime ago but they are in operation for some time just ask Keth Noyahr. Probably the same teams using the "TRIED & TESTED" methods were given a different assignment on Noyahr's case.

But to be fair (or unfair depending on a persons point of view) the dispearances have taken out LTTE ability to launch large scale attacks like the Katunayake,....etc but i dont think it will be 100% effective against bus bombing like attacks remeber the terrorists have to succed only once.We will have to suffer attacks against civilian targets till a lasting solution to the war is found. That is the price the citizens of Sri lanka will have to pay as long as there is a war(well at least those who live here)

yes; but the govt. should minimise it. the only sure solution is to end the war ASAP not by surrendering (then there will be more bombs therafter) but by winning it.

When you attacked at FDLs or LTTE camps, they did not explode any bombs. But when you target civilians you have problem. Vanni people they are used to this. They were born into this situation. Think about the people in south.

  85. weather shihalese or Tamils all we are a humans we should respect each other I support the Tamiils freedom since the GOSL not value as a Tamils it own citizens but our enemy is only tge GOSL the terror government but not shinhalese people, my tears and condolence those who killed to day

  86. for one thing there is less seurity around this area where the blast occured. SO it is easy to bring plant and exploade the claymore.

And the People are less vigilant in these areas because they think they are safe. But now LTTE is attacking these ares because of that same reason..

This is not work of MI, It is LTTE but they chose an area which is less hassle to work with. Because last attempt got spoiled by people so this time they went area where people dont care what happening around them..

We as civilains has bigger responsiblty that SLAF because we have to be Vigilant thats only way we can minimize thiese attacks

  87. cunning,

    good; agree (no jokes).

but i doubt the LTTE is mature enough to honour a ceasefire. they are only interested in tamill elam and violence, unfortunately.

    sampath,

your plan is hilarious to say the least. war and emotions don't go together mate. when a thing like today happens people jump into conclusions based on their characters. some give in to total submission and some others get worked-up. neither is good.

    zameen,

no way mate. killing civilians won't achieve anything good. but retaliation is a the right thing to do. until around mid-2007, GOSL official stand on LTTE attacks was retaliation. many things changed thereafter. retaliation should target the LTTE.

but the only lasting solution is to annihilate the LTTE according to a proactive plan. meanwhile civilians must be protected as much as possible using TRIED & TESTED methods. they will have to break the cobwebs and clean-up the white vans if they are serious about civilian safety.

  89. Guys,

If the bomb trend continues, people will take law into their own hands. I think that is what happened in Moratiuwa / Katubedda area today. It is unfortunate, but inevitable.

There are so many infiltrators in the city and the suburbs. There is a break-down in search operations that is the main cause for all this.

I think the court rulings must be ignored and what is necessary must be pursued - with renewed vigour.

    May the innocents attain Nibbana!

  90. Bhathiya,

It's never too late man. A little compassion never hurt anyone. Even if the LTTE takes advantage (which they willl to re-arm etc), at the very least we'll get tremendous IC support, aid, and we can claim the moral high ground (which we've clearly lost). There are moderate Tamils, even in the LTTE, who will respond to real peace overtures. I'm sure they are also sick of the killing and the dying. We are falling so behind the rest of the world. Even basic education throughout the country is degrading fast. We are ruining our future, and leaving it in the hands of corrupt people who are steadily turning Sri Lanka into their own private Banana Republic. Look at India: 10% growth! They've got 14 languages, 90 odd dialects. If they can make it work, surely we can sort our a problem of 2 languages. We just need to try.

  91. Tamils cannot live with other nationals. It's the same case in India. That's yy they r cornered to Thamilnadu.

Im sure some 100 years from now, in places like Canada, Europe, Tamils will be fighting for a seperate country. Saying that there was a Tamil Kingdom few hundred years back.

The current incidents prove beyond doubt that the LTTE is in dire straits. LTTE has itself confirmed their defeats with this sudden increase in bombings. So this is the best answer that can be given to Tamil separatists that have become international pariahs who question the advances of the Sri Lankan forces.

Good that the gov imposed police curfew. Better safe than sorry. Every step must be taken to ensure that no commotions take place.

No wonder why you support LTTE to kill the remaining innocent tamils.

Claymore attack on civilians in North done by LTTE. They kill their own people. They need more and more suicide bombers. This is the best way they can recruit black tigers and they did earlier also. One black tiger from each victim's family.

Shyam, still you have time to change your mind. Think again.

Please understand! civilians are civilians whatever race they are. You can stop these if you rise against your government for the DPU 's civilians attack. Attack on Shankar( Commander of TFA) was legitimate and military target but not these innocent children, woman and elderly people.

1 Student has tried to Photograph and Video the Incident while all others were busy helping the Injured.(Think this is how,,the Pics come quickly on Tamilnet).

The other was caugth while trying to Escape by Jumping over the University Hostel Walls,,After hearing that the Army is Checking..

People around the Uni are still searching for 2 other Tamils who have escaped earlier...Most probably,,if caught,,,,to Kill them.

appreciate your thinking of human value either they are from north or south or tamil or sinhala

BUT in reality LTTE does not values it!!

Your mind is dirt enough to just think that north civilians are also attacked dpu. for sure it's LTTE DPU units done it.

well we do not use our valued SLA DPU just to kill innocent tamil civilians. dpu are our assets.

open your sensors and be real.

it's LTTE kill there own people in north . they want to keep the people in north mind set fill always with LTTE thinking.

like your & shyam mind is filled with LTTE way and unfortunately you guys are puppets of LTTE!

They choose the targets by their own skill full intelligence precisely and carry out them with tremendous tenacity of purpose, grit and sophistication in thinking and planning.

It would be no more than 5% percent of prospect of success of the DPU' tactic to catch a tiger on the 100% risk of south civilian.

    1) Ceasefire so the terrorists can live happily ever after

    2) Open all supply routes to north free flow of goods so terrorists can rearm.

    3) abolish emergency law - no one to be arrested without legal warrant so the terrorists can run free.

    4) MAXIMUM media freedom - let them have access to the north and all operational areas to give intelligence to the terrorists.

    5) All police stations to have translators to translate sinhala into tamil and vice versa (majority tamil areas must have tamil police)

    5) No corrupt deals allowed (no Mihin air for starters)

    6) Completely OPEN the economy - no duty, no VAT. Free flow of goods - to provide an immediate peace divident to the people, north and south.

  121. SHYAM SAYS,

How its possible to set up a claymore in a Main road even though there is SL armed forces guarding in every 10fts ....
in this case the man have to be on that place and set up the claymore ...and have to be there for blast the bomb ... the claymore location should be in his eyes ... so it takes a long time ...
what these security personals were doing all the time ... And he have to bring the claymore with him ..thats too risky to a tamil bring it with him through check points ...

1- MI was behind the blast
2- Some Security personals have helped to make the blast

The SL Government does not want to gain public support like this.this is the terrorists way of doing things..
If you know the place where bomb blasted, the big stretch with open field from either side make it possible to use the remote control from fairly long way from either side. There are NO SECURITY personnal in this road. ( only a police check point near the bolgoda bridge )At Night time this whole area is free for any action... So a PERFECT PLACE for a Terrorist..
The Bombings around Piliyandala,Dehiwala,Galkissa & Moratuwa area are carried out by the LTTE not only due to the supplies but also coz thinking that it would ignite Communal clashes...
So much for the PROTECTORS of TAMILS....Who will be Really Happy if those innocent Tamil ones also get attacked.
The cheking of the Hostels is something that should have been done regularly, the checkings was done only once about a month ago.But the bomb that went off in a paddy field near the Hostels about 3~5 monthes back should have been the starting point to do these checks. Not Every Tamil is a Terrorist, but the terrorists also hides between the Innocent..
One of the dead Uni Student is a Royalist from kandy, who has just finished the university life and hoping to step on to the world as an Electrical enginner...

  135. GOSL supporters,
My cousin was abducted yesterday by white van thugs from his workplace in Sangaraja Mawatha.
Now, HIS is a classic case in point.
He is one of those many many Tamils who does not even dare to think against the Government, let alone act. He was working as an accounts clerk and was such a workaholic. He has been living in Colombo for the last 6 years and the only place he knows to travel to is his office and the nearby market.
The fellow doesn't even go for a booze despite being pestered by his work mates, and prefers to stay at home and watch comedy movies or cartoon!!
Has this guy been arrested by Police? Where is he held? Is he alive? Is he being tortured? He can't even stand a slap, can he go through any inhumane torture by the notorious Sri Lankan authorities?
His family and friends are distraught. I'm sure by now, the GOSL has created many an LTTE supporters from this previously politically passive family.
The reality is that, there is a screen of steel between these two ethnic groups. There can never be any co-existence between them and it will culminate in Tamil Eelam, a separate state for the Tamils!

  137. LTTE appears to be reaching the final stages to unleash such mindless pure terror on civilians. I believe that our military should stick to the plan and others in the south should exercise utmost restraint to safeguard innocent civilians. If this terror bombs do something, that is further strengthening our resolve to eliminate LTTE terror.

    Long Live Sri Lanka!!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Woe betides the LTTE terrorists who plant bombs and get caught. It would be better for them not to have been born.

Heart felt condolences to my fellow countrymen who are bereaved at this time.

On the same token, please exercise common sense and civility. We don’t want another Black July, do we? Two wrongs don’t make a right. Black July gave a “legitimate” reason for the terrorists and we are reaping the harvest of that (and other short-sighted political decisions) even today.

Even in your indignation, don’t suggest revenge on innocent humans. Leave innocent civilians alone. But get the culprits with “extreme prejudice”. Do not pamper them. Culprits include the terrorists who carry out the final atrocity as well as those who enable them to achieve that. They could be of any race. Once caught with evidence to reinforce their involvement (no matter how small) appropriate action must be followed through to absolutely ensure that they will never ever be able to carry out the tiniest act of criminality. Total disablement with “extreme prejudice” is key to minimise future debacles like this Moratuva bus bomb.

the screen of steel is getting thicker & thicker with each bomb who is responsible? you may give some argument saying this is the work of MI but thats highly unlikely even in your heart of hearts you must know that this is LTTE's doing. Its sad to see LTTE sacrifising the saftey of the ppl who they say they are protecting. Tamils are being looked at more and more sucipiosouly with each exploding bomb IT's not right but that is human nature LTTE knows this and is trying to feed on this to start another 83 like riot. I hope Sinhalese ppl continue to remain calm whatever happens in the future. The other casuality of these bombs are the sidelinig of the moderates extremists will now have carte blanche to do what ever they want I fear for Sri Lanka now and hope its not going to go through another dark era again.

I agree that we should make it mandatory for all conductors to check bagages. We should have travelling police checking units that get on to a bus and do the checking while the bus travels. I also think and heard that Private bus owners are going to install CCD cameras in all busses. I think they should also install and have complete single trip recording in public buses too. That way police can catch perpetrators.
