LTTE loses 2nd FDL in Muhamalai as 58 division enters Elephant Pass south

Units from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA)’s 53 and 55 divisions have now brought under their control the second LTTE defense line in the Muhamalai/Nagarkovil axis. Tigers had no option but to vacate the FDL when special infantry units from two divisions advanced on them. Exact casualty details are not available as of now. 53 division is commanded by Brigadier Kamal Gunarathne while the 55 division is commanded by Brigadier Prasanna Silva, a former Special Forces commander.

Meanwhile the army’s 58 division (Task Force 1), have entered LTTE dominated territory in Elephant Pass (Alimankada) south. They have also captured two villages located south and east of the Jaffna lagoon. This progress of the 58 division further increases the pressure on remaining tiger presence in the Muhamalai/Nagarkovil and Kilali axis. 58 division is comprised of 11000-12000 troops in four brigades 58-1, 58-2, 58-3 and 58-4.

Map picture

Meanwhile SLA was also able to make progress in several fronts in Mullathivu district in the past 24 hours. A large portion of A-34 road to east of Mankulam have been captured by Task Force 3 and Task Force 4. LTTE dominated villages of Oddusudan and Thanniuththu are also under the control of these two divisions. Fighting was also reported in Preiya Uppukalamkaimkulamm and Keppal Aru south in Mullaithivu. 15 bodies of slain LTTE cadres have been recovered by the troops. LTTE has been continuous firing artillery from their bases in Mullaithivu targeting SLA positions in Kilinochchi as well as targeting advancing forces in 59 division.

I think thats a mistake in the update. It should probably read casualty figures "not available" rather than "now available".

  11. KillerT,Syler,
Yes there was a typing error. Exact casualty details are not available. A lot of them seem to be retreating towards Mullaithiv but that's not to say LTTE didnt suffer.

    @pundeyeelam,
EPS is a vast stretch of land and after LTTE captured it in 2001 they maintained a series of satellite camps instead of one main garrison. This area is still being cleared and the army has not declared it fully captured yet. But it's expected to come soon.

Well it's not only old SLA tanks that are found in EPS. A certain bulldozer demonstrating how even the almighty LTTE can fail, will be the first to be airlifted if that happens.

PS. LTTE didnt walk away from EPS. They were kicked out.

  16. Could this lead to the much hoped for encirclement and total annihilation of LTTE forces now effectively trapped between the SLA hammer (from the south) and anvil (from the north) or will they escape?

VP isn't stupid so I'm guessing on him having a contingency for this eventuality.

I also presume SLA High Command know this and will try their utmost to annihilate the LTTE forces.

  17. The torching of this TV station is the kind of self-inflicted wound I thought we'd learned to avoid, if no other reason than this: it diverts attention away from the armed forces' performance and allows the LTTE's proxies to show the GOSL in a bad light.

But a note to our Western Liberal commentators about to lambast the GOSL for their inaction.

Just remember how the USAF bombed Al Jazeera in Kabul and Serbian TV in Belgrade etc. And also how the US Army deliberately shot at Al Jazeera news crews in Baghdad.

We know that this was NOT because the US wasn't happy about how their war was being reported :)

  18. After a long silence, I got bit of news. Celltel Mobile phones are working in Vishwamadu. LTTE has banned using phones and Radio/TV at all, but eager people are clandestinely using them to contact relatives to report the situation and ask for help.

Recently, a large vehicle convoy has passed South West of Vishawamadu area. It has had two captured Army Buffels, fully camouflaged with branches and treetop matter. There have been over 400 LTTE cadres providing security. People are in the opinion that it was Prabhakaran who travelled. Once the convoy has passed, many explosions have been heard from South side of Vishawamadu, and it is believed that LTTE has blasted the small bridges and sewer ducts along the roads leading to Vishwamadu.

On the other hand, all the refugees have been asked to camp in jungle areas. As they have always done, bigger and better food rations have been given to Maveer and LTTE families. Nevertheless, in order to receive food (government sent) other than very old people, people have to do all the LTTE hard labour.

LTTE has appointed their agents for every 500 families, and people have to report their activities they did for LTTE to get the rations from them. For even small matters LTTE has been severly-beating civilians. People fear that more than 1000 civilians who rebelled against LTTE were executed in the past three months, as they have been taken away by LTTE and not returned to their families.

As reported, whole area is like a concentration camp of LTTE, because the civilians has to do nothing else, but follow orders of LTTE and do LTTE work for food. No sick or elderly being cared by Government Nurses or Dr, because many of the houses and resources have been used to treat LTTE men and women. Two Doctors have been assigned to look after civilians, but they also have been dragged most of times to treat LTTE men and women, leaving sick Children, Elderly etc to be looked after only by their relatives. People are very helpless and are under the tight boot of LTTE. LTTE has almost vacated Mullative, and people believe that the final battle would be in South East of Viswamadu, as it is where Prabhakaran believed to be hiding. Despite LTTE warnings, people are making daring attempts to leave the area and they want government to instruct them what to do through leaflets dropped from air.

  23. There has been a man from Killinochchi suburbs. He has lost his wife to Cancer, and he has brought up three kids with every difficulty imaginable by being a daily waged laborer.

LTTE has taken all three kids in three occasions, and all of them have been killed in fighting. Two few years back, and another one very recently. This man has gone semi mad for some time owing to isolation.

Recently, he has refused LTTE commands to dig bunkers in lieu of food asking them to give his kids back.. and has become so upset owing to hunger and deprivation, and has gone mad shouting "death to Prabhakaran".

It has been only less than half an hour, and two LTTE men have come, one being a senior leader and shot this man on the head on the spot while all his relatives and fellow IDPs were watching helpless.

They also have kicked a Maveer woman on the stomach who has tried to rescue him.

They say every IDP area is infested with LTTE intelligence agents, and everything about IDPs are reported to their hierarchy.

People are very scared of LTTE and wants to get out from their clutches at the first opportunity.

There's really no need to reply to every distortion the pro-LTTers publish. Canadian govt, law enforcement and intelligence already know the level of teh problem they're now saddled with. On the other hand, there are the anti-LTTe tamil mobs that operate with equal impunity in Canada. So there is a natural balance when these guys wipe out each other.

What's not being published in the news papers is the fact that the SLDF's demonstrated capabilities caught the whole world off guard. Even though the Us was instrumental in providing limited arms and specialized training, even they are stupified by the level of professionalism in the SL Forces. That made an Indian military guy to comment that "it is difficult to imagine the present Sri lankan forces to be the same ones who lost many battles previously."

The LTTE will fight tooth and nail to avoid losing the last sea access, to prevent a stifling death, unheard and unsung, in a dismal place. Our forces will concentrate on capturing the sea front in Mullaitivu to do exactly that. Once cornered deep into the Mullaitivu jungles, the forgotten war will become the one which no one will ever hear about.

  30. Now it is the real chess game being played.

We shoud admitt that, when it comes to military maneuvering Velu has his own ingenuity. He must be plotting a way out of total anihillation and SL army should expect anything unexpected.

I am not talking about Velu's men launching a counter attack as with Uneasing Wave, but a way to avoid capture/death and disappear among civilians, hide in jungles in order to regroup in a later day or to wage a terrorist campaign of a different scale.

And I am sure SL top brass, aware of such an eventuality must be making plans to avoid such an anticlimax. After a two year campaign, when the SL army finally tightened the noose in Mullative (or somewhere in that area) if they don't find a big harvest or something significant in side the loop, that will be a very big dissapointment. As well as a waste of valuable lives and resources.

So both sides must be playing a cunning chess game in the comming weeks. Swift and ingenuine moves will bring huge returns. As well, a small mistake or a moment's carelessness can bring devastating blows costing many lives. Safeguarding Big pieces is importatant as we know it was in oponent's strategy in the past throught to 'remove' Big pieces regardless of the number of own small pieces to sacrify.

  31. And in a different note-

I have seen in another blog that LTTE 's main Indian supplier of material for militery uniform (with the signature tiger strip camou) has not supplied the last order due.

This will not have any impact on the battle being faught, but the significance is, it shows LTTE's dwidling influence in spheres other than in the front lines.

these are ONLY weapons and equipment, not results.

LTTE is in an area of 160,000 hectares. one volley of MBRL can destroy ONLY 3.5 hectares. one air dropped bomb can destroy only 1 hectare.

without overlapping we need a HUGE amount (2.56 million rockets for RM-70s; more than 10,000 RM-70s; close to 100,000 air dropped bombs) of these which is not at all practical. also there are civilians.

"While a few men tok up positions outside the premises in militaristic fashion"

What exactly is peace you are talking about? Are suggesting that LTTE adhered to CFA and tried their best to make it a peaceful condition while they were not banned? If LTTE closed Mavil Aru, tried the lives of army commander, tried the life of secretery of defencenot to mention our beloved Lakshmn Kadrigamar, and tried to attack Trinco and Jaffna simultaneously when LTTE was not banned then, how worse it can get for Sri Lanka with the ban?

"Do not blame us now on, all those actions taken by you lot."

Wasn't it Balaraj who said, long before CFA was over, that Eelam War has already begun at a lower intensity. Wasn't in certain TNA MP in 2005 said in the parliament budget debate that they will have their next budget debate in Trincomalee after the Eelam is won?

UPFA MP Vinayagamoorthi MurlaitharanSince LTTE is facing annihilation, the only way to avoid disaster is to comply with President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s request to lay down arms and surrender if they wish to live, UPFA MP Vinayagamoorthi Murlaitharan, said at the Parliament yesterday (06).

He stated that the LTTE was no longer in a position to repeat its tactics. The A -9 highway would soon be opened and the Tamils deprived of moving out of the areas under the LTTE control would be immensely benefited.Thereafter the remaining LTTE supporters and sympathizers too would realize their folly.

The LTTE cannot find solutions to the problems of Tamils through war as they are weakening and the only way out is to surrender, he repeatedly said.
