Sea Tigers attack SLN outpost : Mannar

Sea going arm of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) mounted an attack on SLN detachment in Erukkalampiddi in Mannar today dawn. 3 SLN personnel were killed and another 4 more were wounded in the incident. Tigers lost one of their boats along with 4 of their members due to SLN retaliatory fire. According to available information 6 sea tiger boats were used in the attack.

Sea tigers who had control of the base for a brief period of time were able to capture few weapons stationed in the outpost including a LAW launcher, two 81mm mortars and a 50 cal machine gun. However the attacked outpost was not one of main SLN bases as claimed by some pro rebel media. The area was later secured with the help of SLN reinforcements. The tigers have been carrying out a series of similar hit and run attacks on naval outposts in the recent times.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Air Force bombers have bombed the LTTE frontline at Muhamalai at least 3 times within two days. Many locations on the frontline were targeted and the raids have been declared a 'success' by the SLAF.

  1. thanks for the update DN.

another kallathoni attack on a SLN post

according to defence.lk there have been 6 kallathoni boats. we managed to sink only one.

this is a dismal success rate of 17% and a failure rate of 83% even with the help of a Mi-24.

SLN/SLAF got to improve on this success rate.

  6. Manjula,
The SLDF must have been killing a lot of dead LTTE cadres going by the numbers of LTTE deaths they announce everyday. If you looked even more carefully you'd probably see that this particular LTTE leader Srimaaran would have been killed at least a dozen times by the SLDF (or by the defence.lk editors)

Yet another superb incisive attack by the sea tiger marines. These little attacks will go a long way in winning the battle for the LTTE.

  13. defence.lk says that Tamil IDP told officials that there are thousands like them waiting to leave the LTTE controlled areas.

Why do we only have 7 sailors positioned there when an outpost was attacked in Jaffna in eaxctly the same way earlier.

We should also have a makeshift runway on Mannar Island so we can have a couple there in an anti-shipping and close air support.

We should have some anti-shipping capability of jets. FAC don't even need a missle to destoryed if the fighters are given an aditional 30mm cannon and the pilot can fly at a low angle of attack then the boat is doomed.

For those who live overseas and do not have access to Sri Lanka defence news on TV.

Log on to youtube.com and search under “rana bimen” (translated – “from the war front”). Swarnavahini channel has an embedded team who bring quite interesting footage of what looks like live action. A benevolent person takes the trouble to record and upload the clips within a day or two (thanks to them). Shanak Desilva is the reporter. On one clip he (and the cameraman) travels on a tank or a personnel carrier. Reminded me of how we used to hang on the boarding platforms of red London Transport double decker route-master buses going to school and back. Ahhh..the good old days.

It certainly looks like the eelam land is being gobbled up by Pukka Land faster than one could say “velupillai pirapaharan”…

"Four Tiger commandos were killed in action."

Also a commander was killed two months ago admittedly.

” … Kadaafi, a commander of the Sea Tigers…., who was killed two months ago…”

That’s a grand total of 5 KIA. Not bad. ..not bad at all. Ealam is up for grabs…LTTE is winning the eelam war 100%…hurrah!

    A 100% pukka joke!

Also interesting is that the article does not mention any SLDF killed (although 2,437 SLN and 3,099 SLA were felled) by a dozen elite tiger commandos when they raided and controlled the SLN command post for a whole two hours before tactically withdrawing with the loot. Kudos to LTTE from the diasperate diaspora!

  41. The same thing again. Maybe the Navy should make a new unit or specially train existing people for the security and recovering of SLN bases, just as SLAF has done with its regimental SF. It's going to be harder for them than the airforce with a larger no. of bases but if this kind of thing continues they have no other option. In the meantime the people at the coastal bases and outposts should be armed properly (not just with T-56's) and kept on full alert. They won't be able to do much if they are outnumbered and also poorly armed, but we can shift disadvantage of low numbers with good training and weapons that suit the purpose.

He added that listening to other people’s dictates, and compromising the ideals only reflect the weakness of a liberation struggle, and expressed confidence on the strength and resilience of the Tamil people to confront obstacles in the marathon towards liberation.

That doesnt seems a good idea, Anyway I think the best approach is to get SLN on the seen with enough firepower to take out boats of ltte then they can stay in the camp as much time they want. Thats what is lacking in SLN they cant respond to an emergency like this.

It takes them 3 hours to get to the positon. if we can improve our response it would have been a different story.

  54. some important deductions from the reports of defence.lk and tamilnet.com ...

    - dfence.lk claims that the Navy defended the base.. Unless the picture on Tamil Net are faked this time DefenceNet has made a glaring slip...

    - defence.lk says the motive for this could be to prevent 1000's of civilians fleeing mannar. If this is the case all preparations must be made to allow these civilians to flee LTTE terror clutches. Reconstruct the camp and increase it's defences. Make preparations to accept the 1000's that will come.

  55. IDEA !!!

Why cant the military dress up as fisherman and try to petrol the sae area with normal fishing boats. if they see an enamy boats they can warn the bases to be prepared. this less expensive, you only need one or two people for the job.

Is this a crazy IDEA any comments..

    ReplyDelete
  56. Malin,
I don't think that sort of mobility is possible with Naval Craft. That quick a response will only be possible with air mobility I think.

I'd still like to stick with the idea of the sniper. Could you care to comment why you think it's a bad idea?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Malin,
I think the advantage of being among the fishermen is that it is difficult spot the perpetrators. Even if you in the fishing crowd I think this will be a difficult job. If this is not a difficulty then I think your idea may have some merit.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't think the aim of the raid was to stop civilians from fleeing. The LTTE must be low on supplies. They are raiding small outposts to replenish ammo. There is enough fire power here to prevent the landing. The navy may have been caught off guard yet again. They have attacked 3 outposts so far and have always come in the middle of the night.

  63. - A sniper range exceeds normal weapons range like say ak 47, t 56

    - The modus operandi of a sniper is to conceal himself in sniping the enemy. They should be masters of hiding. So I guess it will not be able to direct fire to the sniper just like that. A sniper in this situation should be able to take out a considerable number of the enemy and / or buy time for reinforcements to come and take them out.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thambala,

"I'd still like to stick with the idea of the sniper. Could you care to comment why you think it's a bad idea?"

It is natural to have snipers for the defence of a military installation (in this case they would be marksmen than actually snipers) but positioning them outside is very risky and using snipers in large numbers like this is not practical at all. Snipers remain concealed by moving slowly and taking their shots carefully at the right time and for the right target. If they fire at everything they see, their cover will be blown sooner or later (probably sooner) and after that the enemy will put the maximum strength they can to eliminate the sniper, using all possible weapons and even charging his position. Then the sniper will be pretty defenseless without anyone nearby to support him (remember that he's well outside the base) and even the best snipers won't be very effective when it comes to a close fight facing large numbers, armed only with a bolt action or semi-auto rifle and maybe a submachine gun.

The reason for not having snipers in large numbers is simple because not just everyone can become a sniper. It's not just a matter of giving a sniper rifle to any soldier and ordering him to shoot. It takes a lot of tedious training, skill, ability to stay cool in difficult situations, patience (although not in this situation) etc. and these are not qualities that everybody has. Also the weapons and equipment used are very expensive and it's impossible to supply a very large number of these to each base.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Panhinda,
According to Tamilnet this was not an ordinary attack. It was a commando attack.
So the landing may have been very well concealed. But how they managed to do that
with that radar also in the camp is something that needs to be questioned.

Can we get an update as to the motive of the attack from DN or on the other side
    from DW?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Its not as in the Movies man. all depeneds on the terrain. Yes Sniper rifles have much futher distance than normal rifles, but remeber these are camp mostly covered with luch bushes (I assume from the pics). so for the sniper to get a good view should be either high place or close by. NO building or no Mountains where you can look down upon. thats the prob. If this war was in area like Kandy then snipers are in bussiness.

    ReplyDelete
  67. "According to Tamilnet this was not an ordinary attack. It was a commando attack."

Tamilnet is very good at word games. Terms like 'commando', 'elite', 'marines' are used to make it look and feel bigger than it actually is. This helps to get the diaspora people get all excited and start 'donating' to them. Commando raids are not usually based on outnumbering the enemy as here, but relies rather on superior training, skill, weapons and good planning.

    2. they had moved from around killai to vidathalathivu. they had more than a week to do so. there can't be "regional" "special marine units".

    3. did they use a sea route? if so it is a BIG loopehole in SLN op.s

    ReplyDelete
  70. I don’t think the idea of snipers will work. We have hundreds of small army and navy posts around the island. Placing snipers in all those post will obviously waste of resources (even we have that much of snipers).
What LTTE doing is gather some 30 -40 carders and hit a small post with 10 – 12 SPs . They don’t gain any war field advantages. These are only for propaganda. Thats what they can only do these days.
I think best way is to prevent this type of attack is proper use of sea minds, land minds and other defensive methods.

    ReplyDelete

If LTTE used 50-60 'commando' (assuming approx 10 in each boat) to overwhelm small listening outposts manned by a few signalmen and a handful of sentries, then that says something.

The motive is simple. Its mainly to replenish ammo and secondly as a propaganda stunt. The 'commando' seem to have gone there with a full media unit. It make no strategic sense otherwise.

This is nothing.... LTTE and their coolies' plan B is to DIVASTATE Sri Lanka when the LTTE is defeated... in teh warfront.

That's why the explosives are now being 'transferred' to the south... thieir mad agenda is very, very simple.... Leave us alone or face hell.

Sri Lankans... please... please don't blame LTTE, GOSL or SLDF when LTTE does this... Instead... go bomber / explosive hunting... They are in your back yard... on roadside, in the bus... under the garbage dump... in a bus-passenger bag... If you want to survive... go look... they are there to be discovered...

I would specifically pinpoint... the southern coastal belt...
P2P (Putthalama to Panadura)... as the very high risk areas where these bloody LTTE cowards are hiding...

Zoom on them, Monitor them, catch them and hand them over to police.

  85. Guys,
On observing both recent attacks on lonely navy posts, the retallions took over 2 hours to be seen.isnt this mean that the communication systems established there are not good?
It seems the system is Stationary, so that when a sudden attack is launched the news does not go through with the accurate details of the attack...
Mobile Com systems will give the ability to give the ground situation while tactically withdrawing (Not Like LTTE is Currently doing.. :) ), & could be used to give the places to attack for MI 24s that can come to the seen in much quicker time (atleast 30 minutes). But really what take them HOURS to come to a place? Palali,Anuradhapura & vavuniya Is More than enough to acheive this time If Pilots are ready to go just as we see pilots getting ready on those Second world war movies. This cordinating the Aerial attack with ground inteligence should be effective in destrying this so called baata Elites gang isnt it?

  86. It looks like personnel manning the navy post have retreated during the attack. 5 best LTTErs are dead. Not that bad. Just little bit embarrassing. We were caught napping I guess. The Navy should be bit more vigilant.

Please have a look at the following photograph posted in tamilnet among other photos. But this one in black and white titled "A Gajaba Regiment SLA soldier killed in attack [Photo: LTTE]".

I am pretty sure this photograph has nothing to do with this attack. I remember seeing it before. But I can't find it. If some body can find the original that would be great.

  98. Re: Mannar naval base attack.

There are several pointers to show that this is purely a publicity stunt and has no significant military advantage whatsoever.

    1) Base overrun in 10 minutes – If a strategically located base it would be defended more strongly. It would need a 10 hour attack. But then the LTTE would not have attempted it considering the beatings they are currently getting.

    2) A photographer was embedded with the attackers – They knew it would be taken easily and a good photo opportunity would be created. As indeed they took a lot of photos.

    3) The terrorists took a small amount of loot and fled – If militarily important they would attempt to hold the base and not leave. They would call for reinforcements and consolidate their gain. Their only ambition was to take a few photos to impress the diaspora – which they achieved.

Whatever it is, SLDF lives have been lost and some embarrassment caused to SLDF. Please learn from this mistake and ensure we don’t give any photo opportunities to these ruthless terrorists. Come on SLDF!

7 upcountry Tamil youths arrested in Yatiayantota
    [TamilNet, Tuesday, 10 June 2008, 14:10 GMT]
Seven upcountry Tamil youths were taken into custody by the police following the discovery of two hand grenades in an estate in Yatiayantota in Sabragamuwa province. The police said they found the explosives hidden in the estate Panawatte in Yatiayantota on receipt of information.

The police said the arrested Tamil youths are being detained in the police station and interrogated on suspicion that they were having connection with the LTTE.

Police further said no room would be given for 'terrorist activity' at any cost in Yatiayantota area and all precaution has been taken to strengthen the security in the division.

second news item. a day later

Acting on information received the counter-terrorism wing of the police; the terrorist investigation department (TID) officers nabbed a haul of explosives and warlike material at Mahagasthota Estate in Nuwaraeliya, today (June 11).

According to the Police, TID officers had conducted a swift operation at around 10a.m.

Following are the explosives and warlike material found during the search operation.

    Items Description Quantity
    2 kg x C - 4 explosive packets 08
    TNT explosives 300kg
    T 56 assault riffles 02
    T 56 riffle slings 10

300kg of TNT!!!! that is HUGE. This was no coincident. but the result of hard work. as far as the LTTE and UNP are concerned arrests also equal abductions. now we know why!!

[Navy jolted by pre-dawn Sea Tiger assault on
isolated Mannar post by Shamindra FerdinandoThe Sea Tigers yesterday lost a boat and four cadres including a leader in an attack on an isolated navy detachment at Irukkalampiddy, Mannar where they killed three navy personnel and wounded two.

Navy headquarters said the raiders later withdrew as reinforcements had converged on the scene of the confrontation, situated about seven kilometres north-west of Mannar town.

The sea-borne attackers had hit the detachment shortly after 2 a.m., a navy official said. They seemed determined to make their presence felt. The latest operation was similar to the raid on Cheerativu islet near Jaffna town in the early hours of May 28, he said.

The Tamilnet quoted the LTTE as saying they had captured two 50 caliber machine guns, two 81 mm mortars, two PK-Light Machine Guns, one rocket propelled grenade launcher, one AK light machine gun, one light anti-tank weapon, two 60 mm mortars and three T 56 assault rifles. According to the pro-LTTE website, the raid been launched in the memory of self-styled ‘Lieutenant Colonel’ Gadaafi, a commander of what it called Sea Tigers Special Engineering Division killed two months ago.

Gadaafi is believed to have been killed by troops operating behind LTTE lines. Although the military doesn’t usually discuss such operations, Army Chief Lt. General Sarath Fonseka recently told The Island, that clandestine forays into enemy territory had been stepped up.

tigers are shitting unable to defend many fronts at the same time. a deep thrust from vavuniya northwards can potentially hack the LTTE territory along the A9 road. this will reduce the flow of supplies, men, weapons, "elites", etc. so far they had been interchanging supplies between eastern and western battlefields easily. this will be seriously affected by the vavuniya thrust.

e.g. when that cripple was killed in an SLAF attack last november, he was somewhere in mulaitivu district. he had been assigned to look into the mannar war theatre.

this type of co-ordination will sustain a body blow soon.

it will also limit hiding places for VPSOB. with troops closing in on mulaitivu he is searching for a new foxhole and killinochchi may not be safe either.

    *********************************

'For a long time I thought the tamils had legitimate grievences in Sri Lanka, until an extended stay there a couple of years ago opened my eyes to the realities that plague their nation. The country is a committed democracy, with all the flaws associated with a representative system of government.
The violence unleashed by the tamil gangs in England and elsewhere are just a microcosm of what they do in Sri Lanka under the guise of a freedom struggle. Their violence has no limits, and is aimed at anyone who dares disagree with their self-appointed leader who now claims to be God re-incarnate. Tamil terrorism is truly evil manifest in today's world and it needs to be stiooed at any cost before it touches our lives as it has, the Sri Lankans'. Nothing these tamils say should be believed, since their entire claims for an independent state are based on ethnic hatred, pure lies and a fabricated history. Most worrisom about my personal observations of this particular group is their inability to live in peace with anyone who dares disagree with their violent ways.'

"'Security Forces poised to regain Mullaittiuvu, capture Prabhakaran' says Army Chief
"The Security Forces are attacking Mullaittiuvu, Prabhakaran's hideout, from several directions. Army's aim is to capture Prabhakaran, who is holed up in a bunker, alive", Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka has stated during an interview with the local daily 'The Dinamina' on Wednesday (June 11).

"The 56, 57, 58 and 59 divisions will surge towards Mullaittiuvu and Task Force 2 will also be inducted to the operation" he further stated.

Troops are attacking the LTTE's 1-4 Base complex in a preliminary bid to reach Mullaittiuvu. Prabhakaran is believed to be living in an underground bunker in the area. Forces have already regained several hundred square kilometers where the Tigers held sway and they have to march forward another 21 kilometers to achieve the final goals, he has said during the interview.

He said Prabhakaran was cowardly attacking civilians in the South, unable to face the military onslaught."

    regarding the highlighted area...
i have manytimes pointed out that the mulaitivu front is the MOST important. but never did i think that "The 56, 57, 58 and 59 divisions will surge towards Mullaittiuvu and Task Force 2 will also be inducted to the operation" !!

there may be an element of propoganda in this. BUT it highlights many strategic issues.

  141. Guys,

General Fonseka's latest assesment is strikingly encouraging. It reminds me of a similar scenario in a European bunker line, in Berlin, at the end of the second World War.

    The rabble rouser - Adolf Hitler - started shaking like a fish taken out of water. He did mistrust his genearals; his orders were erratic and sometimes ludicrous; the day dreaming reached new heights that bordered on the fringes of lunacy; shouting, screaming, then sweating profusely when nothing worked was very common in his vicinity;

Prabhe is a man who is not short of adjectives: ruthless, maniacal, ambitious, chauvinistic, cunning, violent, you name it.

However, I have never heard even any his most loyal followers using the word brave, as a way of describing this warrior.

I think his behaviour in the coming months sums of what he had been committing during the past three decades - collective suicide.

I can't wait to see what his epitaph reads.

  150. Oil excavation to India – agreement to be signed on 30th!
Cairn India Ltd. that has won a tender to excavate oil in the waters of Sri Lanka will sign the relevant agreement on the 30th of this month.
The government called for tenders for 3 of the 8 sites along the sea coast near Mannar that have been identified as containing oil. Three companies had presented tenders for one site and all three companies were Indian companies.

However, tenders received for two sites were inadequate and the government has decided to keep these two sites open. Cairn India Ltd. won the tender for the site that received tenders. As such, government of Sri Lanka has granted Cairn India Ltd. Block SL 2007-01-001 in offshore in Mannar basin in North West Sri Lanka and covers approximately 3,400 Km in water depths of 200 meters to 1800 meters.

Cairn India is a branch of Cairn Energy Plc, a crude oil and natural gas exploration and production firm listed in the market of London stock exchange.

    Well observed.

I don't think he is a low paid worker any more. I think the LTTE has made sure of that.

Somehow I don't think it's just LTTE filthy lucre that bent him to sell his mother. He must have had a negative experience at the hand of the GOSL sometime in the past. I wonder what happened in his past to PL (or someone emotionally close to him) for him to be such a deshadrohi para sunakaya. Did his dad miss a job promotion because of a political appointment? Quite possible. Was he carrying a chip on his shoulder against Sri Lanka when the LTTE saw an opportunity to use him? Probable. Most honest Sri Lankans have been dealt with badly by their country but rarely one stoops to the level of betraying their country. This unpatriotic individual must be ashamed of himself! Honestly...

    ReplyDelete
  156. Look if the booty that the LTTE captured is true all we need is the bases to be warned of an attack then then attack can be repelled.

For instance the LAW could have taken out some of the boats before they landed. But it was dark I hear you say but if they had a spotlight (however that makes a good target) that is negated. The light and heavy machine guns if placed strategically could have inflicted heavy casualites but we could only manage 4 kills.

To me it seems like the navy is waiting for the LTTE to attack in the middle of the day. They should be on high alert at night.

  157. Guys,

The theatre of war is hotting up on many fronts. And the battered nation awaits the outcome that is long-over-due with a nail-biting anxiety; it is not for celebrations, but for breathing a long sigh of relief; it is going to be over, at last.

When a nation is at war, keeping up its morale, heads the list of priorities. During the second world war that battered Europeans, war songs, war movies were designed to glue people together during adversities. It did work and the older European folks bear testimony to its success.

A section of our politicians in the opposition are accused of blatant betrayal against their motherland. The accusers got their point.

However, there is another way to look at this spectacle.

Can't they be entertaining us by stealth, during the troubled days?

I am resigned to accept the latter.

Mangala has come up with a very ingenious way to expand the membership of his faction of the SLFP - the digital membership card, the first of that kind in history of politics, not only in Sri Lanka, but in the world, in my opinion.

With the introduction of this device, he implies the potential stampede that exits to get the membership of this elite group of SLFP. It is not easy; nor is it possible for any one to hack into its database for manipulation, steal members or sex change. Because it is digital.

Mangala is not a man to mess with. By going digital - '0's and '1's - he implies just that: it is black or white; now or never; Ranil or Prabha; good or evil; day or night; sex or celibacy. He may add more in the coming days, as the political temperature rises, but strictly sticking to his digital mode - all come in pairs.

His comrade, Ranil, also grabbed a few headlines recently, for telling the wrong thing at the right time and vice versa.

At least, in this respect, both Mangala and Ranil show that they have something in common.

I notice Ranil dozing off in recent meetings. This is something he inherited from his uncle and mentor, late J R Jayawardena, who brought him into politics, in the first place.

The Indian media collectively used to call him the Old Fox in politics, because of the way he got India involved in the conflict, with no exit strtegy in sight. The Indians call it the great trap.

I think it is rather unfair. He was always potrayed as a ruthless and cunning politician. He was neither.

He was a natural politician - modest, simple and calm. He was neither vicious nor vindictive. His miraculous escape - without a scratch - during a grenade attack in Parliament, despite being the main target and peaceful death in the old age, just reflect the motives he had been harbouring. Most of our politicians did not go to grave along that path. Even politics revolves around Newton's third law of motion - every action has an equal and opposite reaction, in short.

JRJ was an excellent public speaker, when he chose English as the medium. His sense of humour did not have a match; the knowledge that he acquired in reading, was amazingly rich.

However, if he spoke in Sinhala, it was a disaster; those who have forgotten this great man, can get a taste of how it was like, by asking Dr Mervin Silva to lay his hands upon a piano!

Folks, you may wonder why I brought this man - late JRJ - into the scene, during whose reign, the Tigers multiplied by the thousand.

Pleae wait till I prove my point.

The late JRJ used to doze off in meetings, exactly the way Ranil does now. In fact, in the case of JRJ, he was pretending that he was asleep, because he was fed up with the garbage that was dropped into his ears by those who were around him. He reached the highest office in the land and his next goal was Nirwana, not to promote his subordinates into powerful positions.

I think Ranil is emulating JRJ who was his political mentor, after all.

As a practising Buddhist, JRJ made it clear what his ultimate goal was - Nirwana.

However, his disciple, Ranil, has a problem; he has not been unequivocal about his religious bearings. Some say he is Christian; some say he is Buddhist. His critics may even say that he is Hindu; there is some news about him being at a pooja in India.

I think Ranil's religion is politics and his the religion of politics calls for following all the major religions. Late president, Premadas practised this to devasting effect, until he got blown up.

Our deities who rule over the skies are rivals, despite their holiness, beauty and luck. So, to appease all of them is a challenge, unless you choose your religion as politics.

Ranil leads and Mangala follows suit while Chandrika follows in saree, in pursuit of that great goal. The is Srilankan politics has reached new heights.

This is pure entertainment, folks, during the war.

    May they long live!

  158. Defence.lk headline reads ” 'Security Forces poised to regain Mullaittiuvu, capture Prabhakaran' says Army Chief”

I believe Prabakaran will be captured alive soon (unless he escapes to India). But whenever he gets caught he would be caught ALIVE, not dead. Because, he is too much of a coward to take his own life. Those who advocate suicide to others to achieve selfish personal agendas rarely have the bottle to do it themselves. The best he would ever do is to force a close terrorist henchman to kill him to save embarrassment to himself and the LTTE but he won’t do what Hitler did; never. The only thing the sun god has in common with the sun is that they are both big & YELLOW!

The suicide capsule he wears around his neck is full of Glaxo glucose – the greedy pig.

"So what weaponary do you want to give them?"

I'm not sure about what you are asking but I assume it's about commandos? Commandos and special forces use a wide variety of weapons to suit their mission, and the weapons used are changed according to the situation they are going to encounter. They are adept at using all kinds of weapons from sniper rifles to knives. Look at the pictures of our SF people in Vakarai and the Commandos in Thoppigala. They have assault rifles, machine guns, LAW's, RPG's (thermobaric RPG's as well) sniper rifles, submachine guns, grenade launchers etc. but more than the weapon it's the skill of the user that's important. If you give an M4 and an anti-tank missile to a new recruit from the LTTE baby brigade, (or any other unit at that) he doesn't become a commando. What's the use of advanced and specialized weapons if the user is not skilled or trained in using them?

"Foreign Secretary expresses displeasure to UN Resident Coordinator

Foreign Secretary Dr Palitha Kohona called in Mr Amin Awad, the acting UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (11 June 2008), to express the Government's serious concerns on the statement made by Sir John Holmes, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs on 29 May 2008 on the recent wave of bomb attacks by the LTTE targeting innocent civilians using public transport in Sri Lanka.

It was pointed out that neither the statement of Sir John nor the reported remarks of Mr Neil Buhne, the UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka had identified the perpetrator of the series of the massacres. The killing of civilians was condemned only in general terms, which conveyed to the uninformed that the Government of Sri Lanka was somehow responsible for such attacks.

The Foreign Secretary informed to Mr Awad that it is incomprehensible that the UN which conh condemned at the highest level the killing of Kaushalyan, a terrorist leader, found it difficult to condemn the LTTE for its deliberate and targeted bomb attacks, which have claimed the lives of dozens of innocent civilians.

"If Ranil is the present President in the Country, he will get much more International support than what Mr MR get now for the present military campaign"

I disagree with you, mate. Remember, the lack of military support, especially by the west, actually originated when the UNP was in power in eighties, especially with the blessings of India. Ranil was a senior minister then and the relationship with India was the worst since Genesis, I suppose. We were both diplomatically and militarily impotent at the time.

    Contrary to the popular belief, MR has international support. He is welcome everwhere: sometimes as the chief guest of a renowened military academty; address global audiences;

Today, I see a photograhs of a visiting US defence delegation with General Fonseka. They are not here to dictate terms on us; they are here to exchange strategies, folks. Isn't that a recognition that the so-called international community silently admire MR's mode of action, in rooting out terrorism. I am sure, these powerful nations will turn to us for tips and hints in combating terrorism, when they reach the end of the tether of conventional warfare.

Even on economic front, Ranil & Co did not excel well, in my opinion: they just liberalized everthing that include the state security. It is not clever stuff, isn't it?

You let anything happen in the name of free market. It brought dividends when the global economic outlook was good. But during gloomy times, it doesn't work.

When his government was kicked out by Chandrika, there was no gloabal outcry. It shows how effective Ranil was. He was just a stick in the mud. Some western leaders like them because the very stick is ideal to make things muddier. That is all.

  195. [Things are starting to get heat up in Wanni as enemy is closing in..]

LTTE die-ass-pora has an issue identifying who the true enemy is -a democratically elected (that means representation from all the peoples of Sri Lanka) government or pathetic bunch of terrorists who are led by a brain screwed (by watching too much blood spitting Tamil movies) barbarian. The brain screwed barbarian took three generations of Tamils to the stone-age, and sent thousands of them into the next-life to abroad as refugees, because of his peanut size tribal brain could not understand what it takes to live and let live. This enemy of all the ethnicities who live in Sri Lanka including the Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims etc, destroyed whole livelihoods, butchered anyone who opposed his tribal thinking, engaged in mass genocide. He abducted anyone he saw as fit to carry a gun. He made more damage to the Tamils over the last 30 years than to Sinhalese. He destroyed the democratic means that Tamils had to develop the North and the East.

If you would look at the East now, you can see that all the ethnicities are coming together without the barbarian. Tamils in the South live in harmony with Sinhalese and the others. The issues are created in the South by only the brain-washed LTTE goons. They should get the white van for the safety of peace loving Tamils, Sinhalese and the others.

Sri Lankan security forces are fighting for everyone's peace. It is not only for Sinhalese.

Every democracy has weaknesses. People have to learn to overcome them peacefully. Killing people is not the answer to solve issues. When there is no LTTE there would be peace.

Yes Asithri, Sri Lanka would be a heaven without the LTTE tribalism.

    I agree!

We have made enough sacrifices and we won't quit now until we reach our target.

Powerful western military could not defeat the Taliban and Alqaida in Afghanistan and Iraq and how could SLDF defeat LTTE? SLN can not secure sea lines while SLAF sprays its resources without any real targets. To hold onto Wanni mainland, SLA needs another 100,000 men which is impossible given the budget they get now. Even if they get another 100k+ new recruits in their forces, the chances of controlling the insurgencies are nil. We will back to square one again. Only wise men can understand the real situation now. You can not defeat LTTE militarily.
