4 LTTE boats sunk, SLN FAC damaged in sea battle

Four LTTE sea tiger craft including an explosive laden suicide boat were destroyed in a sea battle that ensued east of Mullaithivu coastline. A SLN Fast Attack Craft (FAC) also sustained heavy damages in the incident. The exact number of LTTE cadres killed is not known as of yet. SLN units have recovered two LTTE bodies from the area after the battle.

It is believed that the LTTE flotilla was targeting one of the larger SLN vessels deployed in the Mullathivu seas. Luckily the boat movement was detected by FACs patrolling closer to the shore and SLN engaged the sea tigers before they could mount a surprise attack. A suicide boat tried to ram into one of the FACs but it was destroyed before it could reach its target. However, the suicide boat exploded in close proximity of the FAC and it sustained damages due to the blast.

Meanwhile troops laying siege to Mullaithivu recovered 9 more LTTE bodies yesterday (20th). More than 100 LTTE bodies have been sent to Vavuniya and Anuradhapura hospitals in the past two weeks alone. Around 75 of these have already been buried since handing them over to the LTTE via ICRC was is longer possible.

  1. DN, /heavy damages/ means FAC is out of action? So it is not super dovra? What about SLN cassualties if any?

  2. tigers seems to be fighting harder to keep the sea front open than they tried to keep kili.

SLAF is clearly a competitive advantage we have. we should use it to screw the tigers in this area.

  3. mi-24s have also been successful in targeting STs. but MOST big St crafts would have AA guns. so the ability to use MILs is restricted.

that leaves those instances to jets.

As long as it is not sunk, the FACs can be repaired pretty quickly by SLN. Our guys have even repaired boats that were reclaimed from the deep before.

Interestingly, Tamilnut portrays this episode as if the LTTe intercepted a SL naval force and beat it. The gooks still try to pretend as if they are a state and have territorial rights. Must work like majic with tamil aunties who don't get laid enough.

ST crafts have that chinese double barrel HMG that can be either used to take on land/sea based targets or airborne slow moving targets like a hind... But despite these risks hinds have been knowing to target ST crafts thanks to some dare devil pilots within SLAF ranks...

TamilNut claims the FAC was a super dvora... the ones made by CDL...
So if the hull and super structure is not heavily damaged...we should be able to fix it...
If the hull integrity is compromised too much it's not worth the risk to try to bring it back..
Might as well salvage what you can and scrap the rest...
Wish pics of these damaged craft was available for us to take a look at

  8. ranil,

    agree with you.

defence.lk said there are 4 defences in the mulaitivu sea (very roughly FAC,OPV,RABS,SBS). the 5th one should be SLAF.

  19. Guys,

Prabha may still may be holed up in Mullathive area and may be drawing plenty of comfort from the gossip that he has fled the country.

His silence over the airwaves may have led to the assumption of his escape via a sea route.

However, if it was the case, he wouldn't have been able to maintain the command structure as it still seems to exist.

In this context, the attack on the Navy is significant. It may have launched either after noticing the navy dropping its guard with a bit of complaceny or taking a risk to take out a big brute.

As A35 is not fully cut off yet, the Big Beast still can take his final refuge in Mullathive town area in the hope of making an exit via sea.

My hunch is that the Big Beast is still in the country. Saying otherwise is still speculation, not due to any information in that regard, but to lack of any information to the contrary.

  20. If the that aircraft flew at such high altitude over mulaithivu isn't it highly unlikely that it made a landing there???
Besides will lpte risk pVP like that?
maybe it was a trial, a decoy or some other aircraft that strayed into our airspace... can't be the first time something like that happens...

  21. MI-24 Hinds are heavily armor plated and can withstand upto 20mm AA rounds on the sides..indeed they are more suited to take on the Sea Tigers from the air, compared to supersonic jets(exception would be the Mig-27 Flogger), doing a low-run firing with Rockets..:)..this is due to the hi-speed of the craft used by the ST's..45+knots and above speeds..

  25. Eelamists still in 'Denial' mode. Only four more Stages of Grief to get to 'Acceptance'.

In Eelam blogs, only Eelamists can comment. I believe this is called a circle jerk?

Anyway, Peter R's latest fantasy at http://tinyurl.com/8nts6q deserved a short reply. He didn't allow it be submitted, so here it is, especially for any depressed Eelamists.

If I may intrude into Eelmists's private grief, your Sun-God has forgotten to adhere to some key factors for prevailing in an insurgency/terror campaign.

    1. Population: the demographics are against an attainment of 'Eelam'. The tamil segment of SL's population's declining and will continue to decline. In the 'Eelam' areas it is either static or NOT increasing. Result: declining pool of recruits. The SLA has plenty of recruits from a larger demographic pool.

    2. Safe rear-areas:: After the Sun-God's incredibly dumb decision to murder Rajiv Ghandi, Tamil Nadu is no longer safe area for arms, training, research (how many kg of ball bearings per suicide bomber's chest rig to kill five civilians in a blast radius of 10 meters?), Rest & Recreation and all the other things a viable terrorist group needs to operate.

    3. External state sponsor or support:: The Sun-God really blew it there with Rajiv's murder. The Eelam Diaspora can raise money, but won't send its fighting age children to fight. [see Population, above]. Norway's too far away and can't readily re-supply with arms & ammo.

    4. Don't lose the support of the 'people': If the Sun-God has the Vanni people's total and unquestioning support, he'd be turning away recruits who would be begging to be sent to the front to confront the SLA. Any signs of that? Nope, didn't think so...

Other factors conducive to raising the Sun-God's blood pressure:

    – Don't choose an Island for your campaign - unless you can secure your supply route. Most of The Eelam Shipping Company's ships are helping to increase the number of reefs for marine life.

    – A new model SLA, now in 'Terminator' mode. I've only slightly changed the famous quote: "Listen and understand. The Sri Lanka Army is out there. It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead".

    – A retreat to the jungles to continue in 'guerilla warfare' mode. Sorry, that option's no longer available. The SLA will pursue the LTTE into the jungles and will destroy their their main force units.

An URGENT appeal to the LTTE Diaspora:: If you want Eelam so desperately, get on a flight to Madras (MAA), find the nearest LTTE representative and get on a boat to Mullathivu or nearby. Your Sun-God needs you!

Greetings Sri Lankans...How are we today...Hope you folks are enjoying the shrinking real estate in North where Innocent civilians are held by Eelamists...While TF2 has decimated Udayarakattu Kulam from all sides recovering 13 dead Eelamists and capturing 4 badly wounded Eelamists...
Further North TF2 Commandos has given a farewell party to armed Eelamists in Theravilkulam and reports killing 07 armed Eelamists while the others have taken a flight to safety.TF3 Commandos approaching south of Vishvamdu reports killing at least 11 armed Eelamists.55th Division has started their move south towards Chalai while TF1 has speed-ed up it's move East to Vishvamdu towards Chalai...:-)
The Mig27 that was blown off Northern Front by Eelam SAM's had carried 2 pilots and the 3rd one in the under carriage to manually release Cluster Bombs that were malfunctioning. However the publisher informs that the story was published to entertain remaining Eelamists...But SLAF has released that they have lost a Pilot less B52 Stealth Bomber over wanni hit by a flying Indian Duck...lol...

  29. Perhaps the intruder is AN-32 trying to take some people away? Perhaps there’s the 7th airfield? In one of these blogs I mentioned 18 months ago that they have been building over 5 air fields and I was ridiculed by people I met from the gosl. I think their ‘s the 7th and they also use roads to land the small ones. One loud mouth fellow here had been boasting to his mates that mercenaries have been used to ferry things and people in and out, perhaps using Andaman Islands and Burma where we were told that these guys have helped them with their oceangoing ships to ferry stuff all over the world, They also said these ships ferried things for rebels in Arche. So one must expect their leaders to lie low in those places until they plan the next move. Why on earth do they spend so much on many airfields for 3 small cropdusters? They seems to have used these airfields extensively and only their captured top men will know the real truth. Only a foreign forensic team that could examine these airfields to ascertain it’s use by the rebels. These big aircrafts must have come in and out at their will in the past.

  31. kevin,

    i recon it would rather be a AN-12 not a An-32. AN-12 has a MASSIVE range.

sometime back i posted some evidence of someone trying to transport something from a location in russia to kili. this distance can be covered by a AN-12. it is very much possible a trip the other way, not to russia, but somewhere with equal distance.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Why can't we have two more special forces to attack from the sea side without leaving massive sea area to SLN. PRABA'S submarine escape would have been out of the equation.

Still we are disappointed with our air capabilities. The single engine tuk tuk should have been shot down last night.
That could have been prabakaran who was trying to escape.
When our AF commander told that he would take care of praba's escape through air what did he mean? where were his fighter planes last night ? Should our AF have been communicated with SLN to attack the unidentified aircraft. Not having radar system to cover low flying objects is not a excuse anymore.

It is possible that they may have used An-12s but much of the material for war has been brought by their ocean going ships to nearby countries but the heavy artillery pieces couldn't have been transported by small boats from these ships but by these big planes. It seems that our detection facilities at the local levels are not good enough
Because these planes coming in and out would have been ignored by our unsophisticated brave lads manning the outposts. I am surprised that our guys have not accidentally shot down our own air crafts operating in the night. So one can’t honestly blame the Air Force as they should be provided with the information fairly quickly, then how can could the ground observers communicate to the air force the whereabouts of the enemy aircraft sighted?
I think the gosl shouldn't’t spend too much money and effort for sophisticated air defences as they are nearly conquered all the areas of the rebels and I doubt that any top leaders are remaining there in Vanni, either they have fled abroad or cheeky enough to infiltrate South and wait for an opportunity in future. They could easily hide in the south and conduct their operations in the cleared areas. Small hit and run raids in the South will keep the Diaspora’s interest in this Eelam affair going for some time. I have virtually trekked in to their areas in the North as well as in the EP and one thing I noticed was the rundown and ramshackle way the people live and how parsley populated their areas were and one wonders where the people have gone and are they trying to run a nation of no people. To me it looks a farce and the tiger fundraisers were not happy to hear the truth.
I am surprised that Karuna hasn't revealed to the gosl about these airfields and any type of aircraft used as he was the second in command and he should have known this and I still don't trust him to be sincere.

  34. Off of South Africa's east coast, the KwaZulu-Natal sardine run with its hundreds of millions of fish is considered to be one of the marine wonders of the world. If you are lucky enough to go diving there you will find the glorious chaos of a fully developed bait ball. These are created when dolphins work together to shear off a section of the shoal, corral it into a scrum of the size of tennis court, and force it onto the surface. Only then do the other predators appear, making the whole thing go ballistic. The result is an eruption of fin and flesh. Dolphins squeal like sirens as they make strafing runs at the edges. Eight-foot copper sharks thresh their way through the shoal, biting and gulping. Cape fur seals corkscrew up through the middle then flip backward, snapping up fish on the way over. And all the while gannets rain from the sky gobbling up fish.

SLDF has now corralled the terrorist sardines into a scrum of the size of few square miles, and have forced them up to the surface. It’s now time for SLA crack infantry divisions to make strafing runs at the edges. The SLA mechanized armor divisions to smash their way through the terrorist shoal, killing and destroying. The SF crack commando units to corkscrew up through the middle then flip backward, snapping up terrorist head honchos on the way over. And all the while SLAF migs and MI-24s can rain bombs and rockets from sky on the terrorist scrum. Happy hunting predators!

    Cheers!

It looks as if the unidentified aircraft never descended to a low altitude. So it probably was a RAW recce plane, as the Island implies.

Whether Velu dies, gets captured or flees, the game is over at that point.

It’s a risk to equip the navy vessels with MAPADS because they may not be able to identify the friend from foe. Why take a such a valuable risk with our limited air assets specially we are coming to the end of clearing the areas they controlled.?
It’s ok if anyone flying over but must not allow them to land. Spread our personal through the areas guarding the captured air fields any stretch of road that may be used for landing a small craft.
I personally think that the top leaders will infiltrate south and escape from places like Yala or Wilpatthu jungles or even go up to Jaffna where there is a big population of their people to hide for a while, say a month or two where they will perhaps moan the loss of their leaders and we lose intrest to be appear fit and well else where broadcasting to their flock just as Bin Laden.
