Civilian casualties in suicide blast - Dharmapuram

Heavy civilian casualties have been reported when a LTTE female suicide bomber detonated herself near an IDP center Vishwamadu area. Several soldiers of the 58 division have also been injured. As of this moment, exact casualty details are not available. The blast may have been planned to discourage any more civilians from crossing over the the government controlled territory. For the past two days alone more than 8000 civilians have managed to flee LTTE control.

LTTE now seems to be heavily deploying their suicide cadres to attack the army. During the past two weeks more than 6 suicide attacks have targeted SLA FDL both at PTK as well as at Challai. Some of these attacks did inflict casualties on the army’s side. LTTE’s last ‘innovative attack’ to breach the army FDL south of PTK too turned into an unintentional suicide mission. Another 30 man ‘LTTE commando"’ unit was sent in an armor plated lorry to execute an attack similar to the one launched by the tigers on the 1st of February. The lorry along with around 30 tigers on board was pulverized by 53 division units before ‘LTTE commandos’ could fire a single shot.

is a recycled article. This was posted days after the actual battle had taken place. Chances are high that 'Commandos' being shown in pictures are now dead - half of the LTTE offensive force was wiped out in that attack.

We too have suffered casualties - several hundred soldiers killed or injured at Challai and PTK south. LTTE used tanks, APC (armored lorries) and several suicide bombers yet they could not breach the lines. Back in 2007 and 2008, several LTTE supporters stated "this is Jayasikuru all over again". Well now you have your answer - this time around you simply cannot break the line.

  6. I suppose, VP is inside the seiged area. Or else the remaining caders are being forced to belive VP is alive. I sense some remaining motivation among LTTE caders. This can be a result of VP alive, and motivate or forced to give a last ditch fight.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes, LTTE did not break any line and will not break this time. Anyway too many lines to break.
What LTTE supporters should understand is LTTE has lost a vital fact in any warfare. They have no supply route (Air, Sea or Ground). No supply route means eventual collapse and devastation. This is what exactly happened to SLA many years back.

All SLA supporters should understand another vital fact. The LTTE is surrounded, and surrounded without any hopes. No escape route, no supply and no hopes drives any one crazy. If leaders know how to motivate the caders (I belive LTTE is very good in brain washing) which are now without any hope, this no hope situation can be used as a good platform for massive and very effective counter attacks. This is also a truth which stands over the test of time.

SLA will face many fierce attacks as and when the teritory get shrinked. I also belive the SLA strategists know these two facts. They opted to take their chances by cutting the supply routes, escape routes and to get beaten a little from the encircled wild animal mentality. SLA forces are now equipped with man and material numbers to get a little bit of beating if it is part of the strategy.

The only hope LTTE now has is the Human shiel and Pro LTTE media.

How many SLA died duringb the Tigers failed counter-offensive? hope its not too sensitive to discuss??

And how on earth are the Tigers still able to operate Tanks with such impunity?..why cant the SLAF take them out?..do they even have any ammo for these tanks? or are they just serving as an armored assault force?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sam,
59 is in tact. Deployment of 53 has lead to people believing 59 has met with destruction. 53 is deployed as a preventative measure, not as a replacement to 59.

    Renegade,
When we said they used tanks, we didnt mean anything like an armored assault force. What they use mostly are lorries fitted with armor. Tanks are not frequently used and one T55 was probably taken out last week.

It not easy to pinpoint the location of one using aerial recon as tigers are good at hiding these. There are plenty of places with good cover even in the small territory they have now.

  36. we have a problem.

ananda sangari has bipolar disorder. some days he is very good, some days very bad.

he had a bad day. he has made 3 requests to the govt. which are HIGHLY dangerous.

    from lankaguardian...

    #1
"Mr Anandasangaree has made a timely request to President Mahinda Rajapakse to give ear to them and convert them into action without any delay. He wants a list of people who have escaped from the clutches of the LTTE to be published regularly and where exactly they are now."

this DIRECTLY contradicts with our counter terror and counter-infiltration methods. this should NOT be done. we know as a fcuking fact that tigers also cross over and sometimes with weapons. we cannot reveal that we handled them. if we do, civilians get scared and stop coming.

ASS has again very CUNNINGLY plan to save tigers. if he is genuinely concerned about civilians, there is no fcuking need to make such a request. ALL CVILIANS who cross over to our areas are 100% safe. but not ALL tigers posing as civilians!!

    govt should reject this.

    #2
"Mr Anandasangaree's second request is to allow the elders, the sick and the children to join their relatives who are prepared to accommodate them at their homes in Vavuniya, even elsewhere."

this is completely against what i said in DW previously. this is even more dangerous. allowing "the sick"!! to go to vavuniya, colombo, etc. is a VERY VERY dangerous thing to do. this is free passage for suicide bombers to do what they so far failed to do. any idiot can pretend to be sick and any child can be made to a suicide bomber.

e.g. only last weeek a 13 year old suicide bomber was detected by SLA at a FDL!!!

how can this idiot say children can go to their "reatives" without "parents"????

i hope the govt is not so FOOLISH.

    #3
"His third request is quite just. The health of a democratic state lies in its transparency and Mr Anandasangaree wants the local NGOs, political parties and social organizations such as the Rural Development Societies and the community centers to be involved in refugee work."

fantastic!! the govt blocked them for VERY good reasons. we will be back to square one if we again fall in the same NGO trap. i'm sure NGOs had bribed ASS.

govt should reject this request with contempt.

    cc: MoD

  37. Guys,

I felt a sense of very uneasiness, when I saw Brigdier Shavindra Silva was mingling with people.

It looks like his guardian angels didn't desert him today.

The army top brass must not mingle with civilians until things are sorted out fully.

I saw in New Delhi that there are impoverished metal detectors installed in the form of a doorway, at the main entrance to the hotels. If something like that is installed we may get round this menace to some extent.

Using very sophisticated ones will not solve the problem; if terras blow that up, it is all over.

The top brass must bang their heads together to come up with a strategy for this. We must save our excellent officers at any cost.

    Political Advantages tactically or strategically.

  49. LTTE is losing the depths and strengths in their Military strategy. All recent attacks and maneuvers has tell tale signs of lack of Wisdom.
In other hands, it is un-justifying to expect Wisdom and Strategic thinking from LTTE leaders whom has been running for some good time as well as bogged down without supplies and ground.
The recent attack on 59 looks brilliant from the face value. But the reality is it is also a another show off attempt. True they achieved some target by damaging few vehicles and creating a de route from 59th intentions, but it has no long standing effect. Long Ranger has detailed the mission and the false thinking behind that.
All other attacks are suicidal type or like Uncorking a Soda Bottle. The point is there will not be any effect on the SLA machine from these Soda Bottle attacks. There will be minor disruptions, loss of life and material. But the effect on the equation or scale is negligible.
But behold, LTTE posses a Non Secret, but a lethal weapon which can be a decider at least for a small time period. This is a defensive weapon, but can be use as an offensive if mixed with some elements. This weapon was extensively used in many occasions and SLA has no answer for it so far.
This is called “Human Shield”. The power it brings to LTTE armory is in colossal magnitudes. LTTE leaders very well know hoe to handle this weapon and they have done so far.
Once this shield is off or if breached and recued, LTTE will face a hard time without supplies, territory and morale.
This weapon can be rescued, but good point for LTTE is neither SLA or any Army can reuse it. At the current time only LTTE leaders know how to handle this weapon.

I too agree with you but when there’s genuine concern about Soosai here then we must assume that he has gone for ever or the tigers are giving a lot of miss information about this leader killed or that leader killed so that the gosl or the people will not expect them to live but in fact they have escaped elsewhere to keep this eelam affair going.

It is very interesting that they managed to get a 14 year old child to come close to those people where Major Gen. S.de Silva is suppose to be there. So this goes to show that their command structure is still a bit intact to get this information and this goes to indicate their command as moved and we have collaborates among us giving all the help.
I am really angry with these terrorists and our own band of terrorists for bringing our land to so such levels where the criminal minded people, rouges has become heroes thanks to this war thrust upon us. We the true heroes who has given our life savings are trampled and ignored by the state and suffering immensely. This why I care two hoots for history as it makes criminals and thugs like Puran Appu heroes.
A true example is this Major General Pannipitya is being locked up for wrong doing so was another two bit General and his sons were locked up for murder and escaped justice.
Winning war does not make people heroes until they have given their lives for a good cause and live by good example for the rest of their lives serving man kind. A war will not only make heroes but rouges as well. We will never forget the heroic deeds of our braves but not forgive those exploited it for their personal gain.

  57. BBC in the process of being kicked out of Sri Lanka. The Govt should also use short wave jamming devices. the Sri Lanka Army Signal Corps has a lot of expertise in this type of thing.

    BBC suspends programming on SLBC

LONDON (AFP) – The BBC has suspended its FM programming to Sri Lanka's national broadcaster because of what it claimed was "deliberate interference", it said Monday.

In a statement, the BBC said its programmes and news reports in English, Sinhala and Tamil had been blocked by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), and had not been broadcast to listeners in the island nation.

The broadcaster said it had expressed its concerns over the interference directly to SLBC chairman Hudson Samarsinghe in letters and meetings through December and January.

"We are dismayed that the BBC?s programmes in the English, Sinhala and Tamil languages have been interrupted on the SLBC network," said Nigel Chapman, director of the BBC World Service, the BBC's international radio arm.

"We have no choice but to suspend broadcasts until such time as SLBC can guarantee our programming is transmitted without interference."

The BBC's programming will still be available to Sri Lankan listeners, however, via short-wave radio, over the Internet and on Sri Lanka's commercial broadcaster MBC.

  61. Time for Sri Lanka to unleash their own 'Munich'?

The USA does it. The UK does it. France does it. Russia definitely does it. Israel does it on a tediously regular basis.

"It" may not be strictly legally correct. What is 'it'? Hunting and killing the state's enemies who operate with impunity in foreign territory.

For Sri Lanka, Selvarasa Pathmanathan known as 'KP' is a priority target. As the LTTE's chief arms procurer, he has enabled VP and the LTTE to indulge in a 30-year orgy of unremitting murder, from innocent villagers of all ethnicities to democratically elected politicians including two Heads of State.

KP has now been named as the LTTE's Head of (newly established) Department of International Relations. If VP is killed, or prevented pushing for Eelam, KP will be hugely important for the LTTE's survival.

He has an unrivalled network of arms procurers including a still-functioning shipping network. He's alleged to be in Thailand or similar state, living under some sort of quasi-official protection.

His disappearance (preferably through a deniable 'Munich' type operation) will leave the LTTE in doubt that their senior operative will never live in peace. Senior politicians (and their families) in Sri Lanka already live under permanent death threats from the LTTE. What more fearful threats can the LTTE bring to bear as the result of a 'Munich' operation?

When the inevitable Human-rights retards start bemoaning this policy of targeted assassination, the GOSL should politely direct them to begin their inquiries and protests starting with the US.

Terrorists and ex terrorists can’t be rewarded over the others. Once the gosl get’s it priorities right then every one will respect us. Also they must follow Karuna and join the main line politics and political parties. There’s no room for religious or ethnic politics in the island as it is very divisive.

  71. The Maniacal Coward

I happened to be in London at the weekend and had the opportunity to attend a Tamil wedding in a hotel along with a few Sinhalese friends. The bride was a daughter of a Jaffna Tamil and the groom was of their Colombo equivalent.

We all enjoyed it thoroughly and there were about 10 Sinhalese among 250 guests.

None in the crowd did point a finger at us and accused us of being a part of a clan who commit a genocide in their ancestral lands. On the contrary, the came to us, chatted with us as if we knew each other for ages, exchanged about where we hail from etc in genuinely warm atmosphere. There were some who work with the Sinhalese in the UK: Tamils under Sinhalese bosses or vice versa.

There were a few who were victims of '83 riots and at the mercy of some of our stupid hot heads who shared some of dreadful moments on a hilarious note. I didn't notice a trace of malice among them; they have indeed forgiven us - and collectively. If Mano Ganeshan was there, things would have been different!

When the spirits changing glasses, I started a chat with a gentleman who was a close relative of a former big fish of original LTTE when Prabha was not the leader at the time.

He was in no mood to give credit to anything the so-called Sun god claims to have achieved. He summed up who he is in two words: bloody coward.

He recalled an incident that took place in late seventies or early eighties when a group of police personnel was killed in Murunkkan. Prabha has taken part in the crime, but afterwards started shivering and shaking uncontrollably in the thickets, according to the former Tamil militant. According to him, Prabha killed so many Tamils but not in a daring way as he later claimed. He even disputed the killing of Alfred Doraiappa by Prabhakaran. He is of the view that it was carried out by the son of a prominent Tamil politician at that time who now lives in exile as a decent individual.

This is not the first time the fragile nature of Prabha was laid bare. Karuna Amman said that he witnessed the shaking phenomenon of the great liberator when fear makes in roads to his rotting psyche. It was during the jayasikuri operation that he planned to escape to South Africa while shivering like a fish on the shore.

My man at the wedding said to me clearly that Prabha has never took part in a battle, while keeping himself safe in a bunker.

He created the mythical existence by deliberately confine himself to dark corners. By creating invisibility this way, he paved the way for divine manifestation.

We may be able to see how divine he is in the next couple of days. His worshippers will have to hide their heads in shame for worshipping a demon of the worst order due to a spiritual short-circuitting.

  72. Bandara, you are now officially designated Grade A Eelamtard. (Eelamist+Retard = Eelamtard).

Selvarasa Pathmanathan is called KP is called that because his nickname is 'Kutty'.

The original story of his new position was broken by Tamilnet.

Quote: "The leadership of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) has recently named Selvarasa Pathmanathan, a high profile representative of the movement, as the Head of a newly established Department of International Relations, sources close to the LTTE said on Saturday."
    http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=28224

You've proved the old adage about "better to remain silent and be thought an idiot than open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Threatening the Sri Lankan public with more suicide bombings won't achieve Eelam. We've endured more than 30 years of that and still have not given in.

I suggest you move the Eelam struggle to Spain. The Spanish public easily capitulate to terrorist bombers - look what happened after the Madrid train bombs.

Now, run off back to your room and continue with your interrupted education.

    Patriots,

I am amazed by the response I got within few days of opening up our blog. Let me highlight my intentions on the Blog and explain few things that we should do together.

    * What are the opportunities available for us to take the country to economic prosperity (What we are good at).
    * What is missing in the equation
    * Help each other in filling the missing parts of the equation.

But what I don't expect is,

    * Government machinery will come and Help, unless we could show some significant changes.

Why I believe we can do it,

    * Because there is a large expatriate community who are knowledgeable, economically better but without being able to help
    * There are good entrepreneurs living in Sri Lanka with something missing in equation

Why I think Government cannot help at this stage,

    * Government has bigger problems to solve (at least they think)
    * Government cannot address verticals easily. But we can be only successful by working on verticals (like many European countries)
    * System has not produced enough Think Tanks -(Politics :-))

What are the pitfalls when we get together and drive this,

    * Remember what is missing in most cases for entrepreneur expansion (5- 25 people companies doing specialized projects - like luxury boats, or special crop etc) is the Capital and Marketing
    * So even if we connect the capital with entrepreneur who will grantee the investment (traditionally I have seen our people have less financial management skills and end up cheating the investors)
    * Benefits for taking the risk is = patriotism only (moreover less)

    What can we do?

    * We should take the risk people who live here and people who live outside and also should take the lead to fill the missing gaps
    * Encourage government to participate on this process to learn the dynamics and help secure the environment.
    * Find new opportunities
    * Help in Marketing ( we are too bad at this )

So the list can go on!!

I think the first thing we could do is

    * Identify some industry verticals
    * Collect expertise
    * Create a blog
    * Bring in possible missing parts of the equation
    * create an echo system so that vertical will survive - bringing in gov to keep transparency and investment security

So patriots, can you please add your two cents to this as well.

    Jayawewa!!

    Can't you read?

Tamilnet confirms that his name is Selvarasa Pathmanathan. DBS Jeyraj confirms that KP is Selvarasa Pathmanathan.

Quote: "Selvarasa Pathmanathan was the real name of the man known as “KP” in Tiger circles. He was at one time the chief arms procurer of the Tigers. Now he had been made the global Tiger chief. “international relations department” was simply an euphemism for the LTTE’s global infrastructure."

However, most of the Tamils have interactions with the Sinhalese and know that Sinhalese have no qualms with the Tamils. Only some brain-washed idiots of Tamil origin believes all what LTTE put through their throats.

LTTE wants to assure their survival through creating hatred in Tamils towards Sinhalese. But the truth speaks if you visit Sri Lanka and live in a city.

In any city, Tamils and Sinhalese live peacefully together looking after each other.

Total elimination of LTTE will bring long lasting peace to Sri Lanka. NOLTTE = Peace!

There is no formula you can write for human behavior. After all, that is what you are dealing with, here.

Howeevr, there are proven consistencies in human behavior you can use to make sound assumptions. There is always altruism and meeting of basic needs plus reward that would motivate positive behavior.

Note how evasive this so called intellectual becomes when asked a direct question that is relevant to some of the claims he is making. Sisira knows that if he answered the question truthfully that would be the end of his career as an LTTE propagandist.

    Dear Mr Mahindapala,

Regarding the question you pose, all I can say is that - not being exactly a spring chicken - if you have not manged to answer that question after all these years, I am afraid I am not able to help you. I must have dreamt, for example, that all sinhalese public servants had to pass an examination in Tamil proficiency....

I am afraid I do discriminate; not on ethnic or religious grounds but on other grounds. I have enormous respect for many Sinhalese journalists; Lasantha W of course springs to mind. I recall some who were murdered during an earlier period because they maintained integriity, impartiality and a committment to truth and refused to bow down before terrorists, whether, Tamil or Sinhalese. I am sure you have written and writing at length and campaigning hard to defend the freedom of the press and the right of journalists to cover contentious issues freely and fearlessly and to bring the culprits to justice in the case of recent murders of journalists. Your time, I feel, is better spent defending the rights of journalists in sri lanka and ensuring that their killers are put behind bars You are far too distinguished a journalist - I am sure, of the same calibre as Lasantha in terms of bravery and integrity, the absolute refusal to bow down before the powefrul - for a humble academic like me to be graced with an interview. I am honoured - at Least I should feel honoured I guess – but my humility prevents me from accepting such high honour and distracting you from the noble task of defending democracy, freedom and the rights and lives of journalists under threat in sri lanka..

    Dear Prof,

Leaving the irrelevancies out, may I get back to the simple question I asked: WHAT IS THE DISCRIMINATION FACED BY THE TAMILS SINCE 1956 WHICH THE
    SINHALESE HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED?

Journalists do not ask questions because they don't have their own answers. Nor are journalists "spring chicken", as you state, not to know the answers. They ask questions to find new answers or new perspectives to the old questions. Besides, the point of asking questions is to get answers other than the answers that journalists have. Readers are interested in all shades of opinions and answers. If, for instance, Prof. SJ goes on air and says as a Sinhalese he knows the discrimination faced by the Tamils since 1956 I would immediately assume that you are the kind of person that I must interview to know more about discrimination -- at least more than what I know.

Also, I want to know your answers since you posed as the authority on the subject. So my answers are irrelevant. It is your answers that are important to my interview.

I am also at a loss to know the point you are making about Sinhalese having to sit for an examination in Tamil proficiency. Are you saying, therefore, that there was no discrimination against the Tamils because all public servants from every community had to learn the language of the other communities? So where is the discrimination? Can you kindly state how this fits into your accusation that there was discrimination against the Tamils since 1956?

May I also mention that the best of journalist interview personalities from heads of state to pimps and prostitutes. Journalists do not bestow any glory or humility to the interviewees. It's just another routine job in trying to get to the bottom of issues. Besides, seasoned journalists also know when someone is trying to dodge the issues with evasive answers.

Please note, that I am always ready to learn new things. I would like to learn from an academic holding a professorial chair about the discrimination that the Tamils had experienced since 1956 because my Tamils friends who came out of post-56 era have denied facing discrimination that impeded their progress. As opposed to my experience I am sure you have enough evidence to back up your case. As an academic I trust you would not want to bring disrepute to your University by making wild accusation on any given subject. So please share your exclusive knowledge with me and I will thank you for that.

    Yours sincerely,

You would be at a loss to know whta was wrrong about sinhalese having to be proficient in tamil - the point is Tamils had to pass exams to show proficiency in sinhala but not the other way around. and, you can do your very 'scholarly journalist act' and ask what is the evidence there was discrimination after 1956; of course the fact thae sinhala was made the 'only official language' in 1956 does not rank as discriminatory in your book. When we give very different meanings to identical words discussion is meaningless. this closes this correspondence on my part.

    Subject:* RE: Interview

    Dear Prof,

You reveal your total inability to comprehend the known facts (or is it ignorance?) when you wrote: "the point is Tamils had to pass exams to show proficiency in sinhala but not the other way around."

Error 1: All public servants – Sinhalese, Burghers and Tamils – had to learn the languages of the public. Burghers had to learn both Sinhala and Tamil and Sinhalese had to learn Tamil and Tamils had to learn Sinhalese. The logic is simple: If you are a public servant you should know the language of the public. I will give you evidence. Please ring Dr. Donald Weerasiri (now a retired GP in Burwood) who was a government doctor in Sri Lanka before he came to Australia. He had to pass his exam in Tamil because he was practicing in a multi-cultural society where he had to serve Muslim and Tamil patients. Please ring Dr. G. G.Anderson (another retired ENT specialist) who had to learn both Tamil and Sinhalese to be in government service. So what is wrong in asking Tamil doctors to learn Sinhala when they had to serve mostly in Sinhala areas? They are public servants and by definition they should learn the language of the public as the migrated Tamils do in Germany, Norway, etc. The alternative was for the public to learn Tamil or English. Is that what you wanted? Why should only the Tamils object to learn Sinhala? The private sector did not impose this regulation. It was only in the public sector. Besides, to this day the main branches of the government and the private sector are run in English. So where is your argument for discrimination?

All public servants were treated alike and it was their duty to learn the language of the public. Only those with a colonial mentality would argue that public must learn the language of the bureaucracy.

Error 2: Is England administered in French? Is France governed in Russian? Is Australia ruled in Greek though it has a large Greek population? There are nearly 152 communities in Australia. Which of their languages (including the Aboriginals) have even the status of an official language let alone national language? Why do you have to wear blinkers when you look at Sri Lanka? Do you know that Tamil is not treated as a national language in India where Hindi is the official language? India, after all, the original homeland of Tamils. Unlike the Sinhalese who severed its links with India the Tamils are still linked to Tamil Nadu, culturally, linguistically, politically and even religiously. In Sri Lanka Tamil language has a place higher than in India. So where is the discrimination?

Error 3: All public servants who did not want to learn and function in either language were given the rights to (1) retire with full pension and (2) free tuition on government time to learn the language. What more justice can there be in relation to the language issue confined only to the public servants?. My Tamil wife was a public servant and she made full use of the government time and government paid tutors to learn Sinhala and function effectively in the government service. Where is the discrimination? Are you getting the message?

Error 4: Sinhala only was introduced to overthrow English not Tamil. Besides, the Tamil language was also given its due place when Bandaranaike introduced the Special Languages Provision in 1958. So where is the discrimination? The Tamils were prepared to function in English – a language not even known to the majority of the Tamils – but not in Sinhala and Tamil. When the British left in 1948 only 6% of the population knew English. Do you think the 96% should have been treated as second class citizens and ruled in an alien language? Are you getting the message?

Error 5: This is not a question of giving different meanings to identical words, as you claim. This is an instance of you deliberately distorting the known facts and realities to propagate your political myths.

It is up to you to reply and prove your case. Obviously, you will not reply because you do not have the arguments to prove your myths.

Our peoples have suffered enough because so-called intellectuals like you appear in public to promote your image by propagating myths without fronting up for scrutiny. My humble requests to you is to stick to the facts and please don’t bring disrepute to your University which, I am sure, will take a dim view of your fictions.

Take care – particularly of your faculties.

    Best

At this point it is no longer a territory grabbing exercise. Now it is attritional warfare, to carryout selective targetting to avoid civillian casualties. It'll be slow going in dangerous terrain, boyo.

No other army in this world is capable of what our guys are doing. Any other trying what our guys are doing, would be bleeding heavy casualties by now. This tells the story.

Britain rejects Sri Lanka's envoy: Foreign Minister

COLOMBO (AFP) — Britain on Thursday rejected the appointment of Sri Lankan Defence Secretary, Gothabaya Rajapakse as a special envoy to the island, accusing Colombo of interfering in its internal affairs.

Sri Lanka offered Rajapakse's services in helping the British government to quell a huge rise in teenage knife-related murders in London and in extricating Britain's armed forces from their current quagmire in Afghanistan. Rajapakse was particularly alarmed at the British and US-led NATO coalition's indiscriminate use of airpower in Afghanistan and the consequent rise civilian deaths, now standing at over 5,000 since the invasion.

Foreign Secretary David Milliband said the British government saw Rajapakse's appointment as a unilateral move by Colombo and decided not to accept him.

"It is tantamount to an intrusion into Great Britain's internal affairs and is disrespectful to the country's statehood," the Secretary told AFP, warning "there could be major repercussions" for relations with Sri Lanka.

He dubbed Sri Lanka's move "extremely unhelpful" but did not specify if any measures would be taken in retaliation.

"There is no further discussions with Colombo on the matter," Miliband said, after the British Foreign Office has said talks were ongoing to resolve the dispute.

Earlier in Colombo, President Mahinda Rajapakse's office said Gothabaya Rajapakse, who is the President's brother, would work with all sides including the Knife Crime Reduction Taskforce, the British Ministry of Defence and other stakeholders including civil society NGOs in finding sustainable solutions to the problems.

"In this new role, Gothabaya Rajapakse will focus on the immediate humanitarian situation in London and Afghanistan and assess the British's government work to set out humanitarian and political solutions to bring about a lasting end to the conflicts.

"As special envoy, he will work closely with the British government, leaders from all communities in London, Afghanistan, international agencies and the wider international community," it said in a statement.

The statement, also issued by the Sri Lankan High Commission in London, quoted Rajapakse's as saying he was "looking forward to contributing to Britain's efforts to improve the serious humanitarian situation and liaising with all parties."

Britain has resisted calls for a "no-fire period" and "knife amnesty", amid claims from relief agencies that a "humanitarian catastrophe" was unfolding in the island's war zone in London, where tens of thousands of civilians live in fear of knife wielding criminals and also in Afghanistan where where tens of thousands of civilians live in fear of NATO air-strikes.

Colombo had no comment on Downing Street's rejection of Rajapakse.

Senior British government officials said here that Colombo had not consulted with London before making the appointment.

The appointment came two days after British National Party nationalists protested outside the Sri Lankan High Commission, demanding that international officials keep out of Great Britain's internal affairs.

A Press Release you're not going to see - Good one brother!

Don’t know whether you are aware of events on the 2nd of February. We had a few inches of snow in London and the whole city came to a grinding halt. No trains, no buses and just a few tube lines were operational. Millions of commuters were stranded, billions of £s worth of damage to the economy. But by midday the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, his Excellency Justice Nihal Jayasinghe was already at Millbank, the conservative party HQ in discussions with David Cameron and Theresa Villiers on how Sri Lanka can get London moving by the next working day. Later he called a press conference at SLHC where the Anglo Lankan gritting plan was announced.

Most of his people have escaped to these countries as bogus refugees and now they are using SL as an excuse to smuggle out Tamil nadhu citizens as bogus Srilankan citizens. I met two such young fellows getting in to a bus after work wearing a tee shirt with a Sri Lankan flag, pretending to be a SL refugee. The other factors implicated to our conflict is being exploited by others which makes it a long winded problem to us.
It seems the government here seems fit to send an emissary here to solve the problems in the island because over two hundred thousand Diaspora votes are essential to re elect the MPs who have a sizable Tamil population in those constituencies .What do one expect from the politicians and their insincerity is common to most of the politicians in the world?

    By Gayan Kumara Weerasingha

A separate unit of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) has been set up at the Bandaranaike International Airport to apprehend LTTE cadres and their leaders who were trying to flee the country in the face of military operations against the LTTE, sources said.
The unit, under the command of an ASP, keeps a 24 -hour watch at the airport on all passengers traveling out of the country.
Sources reveal that this unit has already apprehended around 20 suspected LTTE cadres who had tried to flee the country in disguise. A senior police officer told Lakbimanews that an LTTE cadre who posed as a journalist was also among those arrested, and that steps have been taken to hand all those apprehended over to the Terrorist Investigation Division for further investigations. Speaking further, the police officer said that this special division of the SIS was also tracking LTTE cadres entering the country from overseas and that this was being done with the collaboration of foreign intelligence agencies.

  122. The move by the SLA to establish the "No Fire Zone" is smart. 1st NFZ had 2 main objectives among the others;
    1. Move the civillians away from the SLA's main target PTK
    2. Ensure that civillinas have more than one escape route

Although many civillians managed to escape in to governmnt controlled areas within the past few weeks, the numbers dropped drastically with the LTTE taking a more violent approach to stop them.
Battles for PTK also got bloody with the LTTE throwing everything they had at the Troops and SLA progress was slow.

Short sighted LTTE, with the hope of stopping the civillians from escaping, pushed them furhter eastwards.
This however paved the way for the SLA to take advantage of the situation and make their next strategic move by establising the 2nd NFZ on the eastern coast.

The main objective is not to rescue the civillians by sea, but to capture the remaining land areas under the LTTE. The General now has enough access routes to launch attacks on remaining LTTE strong points, with a free hand.

LTTE managed to use the civillian factor to its advantage for too long by delaying the forward march of the troops. Finally, the battle planners thought, enough is enough and the LTTE should not be allowed to exploit the civillian factor anymore.

Any civillians still in the previous NFZ, better be moved to the new NFZ...
because SLA is not going to stop at any cost now!!! It's dirty game, LTTE started it...

  129. SLG war strategy = 100%
SLG Media War strategy = could do better ….

    Let me explain:
    a) We have reporting restriction:
I have no problem with the SLG policy on reporting from the war zone. After all, during the Falklands and the Iraq wars, the British Army took only embedded reporters to the war front. And we all know what happened to the (UK) ITN team, who tried to report the war independently of the military.

    b) We do not provide war related footage/ interviews.
The state broadcaster Rupavahini / ITN does not provide any output which could be useful to foreign media.
Note- Defence.lk is doing a great job with limited resources. For example it carried the IDP suicide bomber story with embedded video, within a couple of hours of the incident. The link was ideal to publicise the event, but for broadcast media, we need the whole package - English subtitles / narration / editing and HQ pictures.

    c) Then we complain about the international media not reporting the war properly, e.g.: 'Tell the whole truth' says Secretary Defence.

Some of you will say who cares; the war will be over soon. Well, just remember we need a well-organised media unit for the next stage of the battle: to expose what the LTTE was all about and to out those who worked for it. At the same time we need to counteract the LTTE propaganda against the SLG, which is now gathering pace.
To give you an example, this Sunday morning, GTV the London based terrorist TV channel, had Fr S.J. Emmanuel, president of the International Tamil Federation presenting a programme in English. It was all about the IDPs with news footage from the jungle. All the interviews with the civilians were subtitled, with sombre music in the background and broadcast quality pictures and editing.
This programme was free to air and could be seen all over Europe and the Middle East.

One way to get the civilians out is to pray for heavy rains that might induce the people living in jungles to break out. Each time I have visited areas north of Trinco it rained miserably without shelter it's impossible to stay long outside.

    ReplyDelete
  141. US military intelligence is hiring tamil speaking 'intelligence analysts' in a hurry. There seems to be a growing unease among most western nations that the defeated tigers will slink in and cause havoc in their countries, and/or those who have been dormant for a while as 'sleeper agents' would go active in an effort to draw attention to their lost cause.

Any way, looks like it is time for those who slept with mogrels to wake up and find themselves infested with fleas. These nations thought this day would never come, not even when the fighting restarted in 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  142. My 70 years old mother returned from a medical camp attending to the villagers in the liberated areas north of Trinco. Usually an acidy critic of any government, this time the old lady is impressed by how well the area has become stable and how economic activity is picking up.

Her fervant hope was that the politicians would not try to mess things up, but should allow individual entreprenuership change the landscape. Some of the discussions her group of docs had had with the GA's and military commaders in those areas are eye openers for how well teh government has planned to bring in direct investment into these areas.
If that happenes, the tigers and other racist tribalists would have nothing to show the masses as discrimination.
And that explains the desperation even some of the key-board warriors in these forums, anti-governmental groups and other anti-Sri Lankans feel to undermine what is happening. Similarly LTTE supporting various NGOs and media attempt to deny the existance of these efforts, and istead attempt to draw attention to anti-terrorist activities going on in some of these areas to flush out infilterators.

The truth and the developmental opportunities, once seen by the local area civillians with their own eyes, will end all 'cause' for war.

This is endgame, exactly how it should be. All Sri Lankans must put aside political and other divisions and unite in this single cause for the sake of all Sri Lankans.

Take it from me, once a staunch UNP'r and now global citizen.

  145. Winning the shooting war and losing the PR war

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its trousers on", Churchill.

Despite the costly gains on the battlefield, paid for with the lives of our soldiers, the GOSL is losing to the LTTE in the international public relations arena.

The LTTE's most effective weapon is no longer the Black Tiger suicide bomber. Instead, it has deployed, with devastating impact, a legion of lies, half-truths and unverifiable claims, which the world's media has repeated verbatim, often with readers and viewers unaware of the source of these questionable assertions.

The LTTE is ably assisted by its media and political sympathisers, including such well known LTTE stooges like Keith Vaz MP, Simon Hughes MP, Robert Evans MP etc.

Why is the GOSL so slow to react and understand the damage being done to its' cause by the lack of counter action to the LTTE's propaganda?

Where is the GOSL's co-ordinated counter-attack using skilled speakers and advocates available to it. In my opinion, some of the most effective spokespeople are Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke, Dr Palitha Kohona and Prof Rajiva Wijesinghe. At least one of them should be on permanent standby to react and rebut various LTTE inspired allegations. They are combative, articulate, speak and write excellent English and will not bow down in front Western media interviewers.

Example 1: The BBC interviewed an Amnesty International spokesman about the situation in SL, during the early days of LTTE deploying civilians as human shields. He trotted out the usual allegations that the shelling was by the SLA, made no real mention of the LTTE having taken the civilians along as hostages/bullet catchers etc. Typically, the BBC did not seek any comments or rebuttals from a GOSL spokesman. Why? The BBC and other important media must be informed in no uncertain terms that balance demands that the GOSL's spokespeople must be allowed to counter LTTE propaganda.

Example 2: The 'concentration camp' story. The Times article did the damage. Where was the rebuttal by GOSL spokesmen? Newspapers can and have been sued for printing lies. The GOSL must demand that a retraction be published, as long as it can prove that the 'concentration camp' story is a pure fabrication.

In the UK, the High Commission is conspicuous by its absence in print and on TV. The HC's press people should be on continuous alert, ready to insist on speaking with the main local and international news channels, ready to discredit the LTTE inspired propaganda. If this is done often enough and the LTTE stories are shown to be the fabrications that they are, the Western media outlets will be more hesitant to blindly print and transmit LTTE-instigated propaganda.

The GOSL cannot afford to lose any more time in resolving this matter. I'd argue that the PR offensive is now at least as important as the military offensive in shaping the perceptions of what Sri Lanka has achieved and what it intends to achieve after the final annihilation of the LTTE's main force units.

As part of this PR offensive, reporters should be taken to the IDP camps and the front lines to be shown undisputed evidence of the LTTE using civilians as human shields. If they subsequently fail to report the facts, their credibility will be shattered.

  157. This comment is about “Genocide” accusation of Brue Fein.

People are blinded by many things. Some times it is patriotism that blinds them. May be it is religion. It could be power or search of glory. Then it could be some ideal they hold on. Also it could be money. I cannot say what has exactly blinded Mr. Bruce Fein. What ever blinds him it creates disastrous inhumane bias against innocent civilians and instigates a culture of worship of suicide bombing, using civilians as defense body armor, drug trafficking, human smuggling, kidnapping children and sending them to war front as canon fodder, credit card frauds and various other crimes. I as a humanist appreciate and admire any human being who speaks up against oppression but when people patronize terrorism in the name of humanity that is a worse crime than terrorism itself. If one wants to stand against oppression in true sense then they must oppose all forms of oppression. Only then we can stand as true humanist and help oppressed people. An example which satisfies this condition is University Teachers for Human Rights, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

    Added to this comment:

I do not wish to whitewash or talk down horribleness of 1983 riots. Leaders of then Government were responsible for that crime. This is obvious. As Ananda Sangari once pointed our, what is not obvious is that what happened was what LTTE exactly wanted to happen. Then Government played into the hands of LTTE. Though this does not alleviate the role of Sinhalese mob or that of the Government, 1983 riots speaks up volumes for cruelty, barbarianism, unscrupulousness of LTTE. If the LTTE can use so called their own people, whom they say that they are the sole representative of, as bait and if the LTTE can kill their own people whom they say they are liberating without any mercy and if the LTTE can use the people whom they are going to liberate as cheap defense armour that has less less value than a bag of dirt that itself stands as evidence of their inhumane nature of unspeakable magnitude. If so called humanists cannot see this, then if this is not natural blindness of perceiving reality, then it should be a blindness caused by wishful search of wealth. This kind of blindness is as bad as LTTE terrorism.

    Thanks!

  159. This is a comment I left in Rover's Terrain blog. This is about Nadasen's surprising surprise, shock and sadness.

    Dear Rover:

Thank you very much for your suggestion. To right a scholarly article you need to use citations. This facility and time that is needed are items of luxury for me at the moment. Still I would like to contribute in a more casual manner to your blog in a meaningful way as time permits. I am a great friend of science. Still I am critical of how they are taught and learned. Though I believe in form of objectivism I also believe that subjectivism is involved in all aspects of our lives, even in science (for lesser extent in Mathematics). That is one reason that I believe Buddha was wise enough to ask not to believe even him. History is a very important part of any subject. One cannot really understand mathematics or Science without some understanding of History of Mathematics and Science. When you lean into the realm of History one needs to be very careful. I am not talking about truth here. Truth or not, one needs to be sincere. The aspect of sincerity is the only aspect I have the most control of. I need to be essentially confident that I have taken all the care possible to utter the most sincere thing I can utter. To do that you need to go through many sources. It requires time. History is important if we understand and are guided by its limitations. Buddha once said “Do not worry about the history of the arrow that has wounded you, just take it out.” Once again given that we understand these limitations, then History needs to be studied to seek guidance and better grasp of problems and concepts.

    For the post now:

If there is single reason why crime prevails, what is it? It is the fact that we own one of most dangerous weapon. In appearance it is soft, delicate and pinky. The vicious aspect of this does not come from its appearance. It comes from its flexibility. This flexibility is needed for its original purpose. Being very clever we have used this most resourceful aspect as a tool of dehumanization. It can bend up and down and left and right. It can even be rolled.

    The tongue.

It is one of the most vicious weapons of dehumanization. Do you need proof? Consider this.

"We are deeply sad and puzzled at the attitude of the apex institution of humanity, the United Nations, in not taking effective measures to protect the life, security and interests of innocent Tamil civilians," said LTTE's Political Head B. Nadesan on Tuesday. "

If it is not the fault of tongue what is it?

Nadasan complains that UN has not taken any effective measures to protect innocent Tamil civilian lives. How true is this? Is not this true if we assume that tongue has different meanings to the words according what slant it takes. Is it not true that UN has demanded LTTE release civilians. It surprises Nadasen that UN does not seem to stand for saving the life of LTTE. This particular Nadasen-tongue also says more than that.

It is god given right that they can maim and kill people at will. It is god given right that LTTE can do drug trafficking, prostituting, human smuggling, credit card frauds. It can wear so called its own people as defensive body armour. It can use the people that they are saying they are liberating as pawns who would face agonised death so that it can be used for propagandistic and/or military value. They can submerge “their own people” if they can just reverse their military debacles. The LTTE is asking who can interfere with these God given rights. Who will dare to question these rights given by Son God? That is what he is claiming.

Is this not the fault of tongue? To complete this note it is necessary that I mention another tongue-crime. That happened in Parliament in mid sixties. One Member of Parliament said in the parliament that he could not sleep until each Tamil is killed and he wears slippers made out of the skin of the last Tamil killed.

How can we tame the tongue? To tame the tongue we need to tame our thoughts. How do we tame the thoughts? Thoughts have materialistic base most of the time. As we believe we are evolved from apes. Apes are territorial. This had to be other wise they could not have been able to survive. We inherited this tribalistic and territorial nature form our forefathers. This is also not bad in itself if we understand that was necessary for our survival. Maybe still this behaviour has some positive role to play in our lives. The problem arises when we raise these natural instincts to level of super ideals that have no material basis and have their own existence.

The ideal become even bigger than the Universe itself. Then we develop xenophobia. If we understand that all these natural instincts are common for all of us and if we also know that we all share the same tears and laughs, dreams and hopes, life and death perhaps may be we will be able to tame our thoughts and develop a form of patriotism based on universality of justice and equality. This may help us to tame our tongues.

Nadasan’s tongue is further evidence of the viciousness of intrinsic nature of LTTE. LTTE and its supporters are basically unable to feel its viciousness. How can any one question God given right to be inhumane? Unbelievable is this for them, as it seems.

(Forgive my typos if I haven’t caught them.)

  160. Hear, hear - a revelation!

President Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunge, the whisky-loving our ex, laid bare a truth that we didn't know about!

"Only dialogue does bring in peace," says she, not in her own country, but in India.

Some bloggers, quite understandably, query which lips generated this revelation - the usual ones or the spare one at the other end!

This is the woman who was instrumental in launching an attack on Jaffna - which was won - and became very ambitious to model it in other areas with the blessing of a corrupt uncle, only to lose everything in the end, while bringing irreparable humiliation upon our armed forces.

She lost an eye during her appeasement period and sacked the government that were inclined for peace overtures.

During her tenure in office, even nature punished us with a tsunami. She didn't have the courage of a Nightingale, let alone Viharamahadevi.

Audience appeasing verbal diarrea must be dipsosed of using filthy counter-attacks. She must be condemned for her duplicity at the earliest opportunity.

You are absolutely right and her uncle’s notorious son Lohan, another thug made to the 3rd place in the recent Kandy’s election to the fury of the decent people of Kandy and to the fury of the party workers. He is another thug in the future Parliament in the making. Heaven help our land!

  162. And then they came for UN staff

-the captains of the Victim Industry (read INGOs in the business of humanitarian work) should thank Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who ordered them out of the Vanni a few moons ago. They made a big hue and cry about the Defence Ministry order, but if they had remained in that part of the country, they would have been in the same predicament as the UN staff and their families as well as other civilians Prabhakaran is holding at gunpoint as a human shield.

  164. Guys,

I watched a clip of Dr Palitha Kohona participating in a discussion in response to MIA . He handled it well; much much better than our ambassadors do.

Dr Kohona and Rambukwella are the people who should be allowed to talk to international media before the mess we on the PR front, messier.

kevin thanks for the comment in my previous post.

All attempts by the LTTE to protect the Puthukuddiyiruppu final stronghold have become futile in the face of attacks unleashed by the war heroes..

Our Representative Anura Dorakumbura in a report from the Puthukuddiyiruppu Forward Defence Line observed that troops of the 58th Division have consolidated their positions in the entire Puthukuddiyiruppu West area. It had been possible following intense fighting which lasted for three days from last Tuesday. Puthukuddiyiruppu is the last bastion of the LTTE and now they are confined to the East of Puthukudiyiruppu and some other areas. 40 terrorists had been killed in the last four days and the Security Forces had recovered several bodies.
