SLAF helicopter gunships attack LTTE bunker line : Periyamadhu

Mi-24 helicopter gunships of SLAF's 9th attack helicopter squadron launched an aerial strike on an LTTE bunker line in Periyamadhu region today morning. The aerial raid was launched in parallel to a ground troops advance of the army's 57 division in the same area.

Meanwhile SLA/ SLN casualty figures of the LTTE assault on Chi'ruththeevu island are now available. According to our information 3 SLN soldiers and 1 SLA soldier perished in the attack.

In other news LTTE has once again accused the Sri Lanka Army's "DPU" of carrying out an attack against civilians. According to pro LTTE media 6 civilians have been killed in the attack. Army's Special Forces and Commando units do penetrate enemy lines to conduct deep battle space operations inside LTTE held territory. The attacks are not carried out at random as pro LTTE media suggests. All targets (which include NO civilian targets as per our information) are verified several times using various intelligence sources before the actual assault is carried out. Carrying out random strikes in enemy territory may not only yield the desired results but will also increase the risk of covert unit blowing its cover.

Despite the credibility of this allegation, there is one more fact that needs attention. Whenever pro LTTE media has carried out a similar story, the LTTE has followed up with a devastating attack on a civilian target in the south. This time may not be an exception.

  1. Thanks for updating defencenet,

Re; DPU action we may never know the full outcome as this would really jeapordise the covert attacks. But the trend is very clear now. LTTE is losing too many leaders too often which mean DPU is in full swing, the unconventional part in Eelam War IV. which the tigers are finding really hard to bear.

  17. AR philosophy of BBC Sandeshaya

Once the bbc correspondent said we report from army and LTTE equally. If not, what is meant by unbiased media? It is up to the reader, to understand the reality.

That is good. Suppose if a girl is raped by a man, the true media should report as follows

Girl’s view “ I was brutally tortured and raped by him….”
Man’s view “ I am very innocent ... This girl come and ask me to do so”

That is how the media show report according to bbc. BBC Sandeshaya never accepts the fact that LTTE is a terrorist organization. They treat government and LTTE equal.

BBC Sandeshaya is a shame to us and for free media.

  18. LTTE exaggerated the SLN dead to 13. that is 4 times higher!!

tigers may carryout what they call "retaliation" attacks. but that will not stop the "DPU".

this is the way to go.

DPU has a lot of potential. instead of restricting to attacks on LTTE (mostly second tier) leaders, it can do the following.

    1. target the LTTE transportation system
    2. target weapons stores, dumps and even small stockpiles whenever possible
    3. use remore controlled vehicles to bomb unreachable LTTE locations
    4. plant hidden cameras around strategically important LTTE fortifications that can be retrieved later. any possibility of live relaying pic.s?

however, the more the DPU is active the lesser becomes their secrecy.

getting people to do things for money is a good way forward. when inflation in the south is 25%, inflation in vanni is 50%. so there is a small bribe can go a LONG way.

I highly recommend the ashes-to-ashes approach. Too many of these buggers are jailed (even after they “sing the blues”) costing hardworking SL taxpayers a colossal sum every year. If ashes-to-ashes is not the way, then how about “live-drops” from SLAF Bell212-birds over the shark infested deep-sea, Indian Ocean?

I personally think the limb-less, head-less heli-drops over Vanni is the way to go (for economic as well as psy-ops reason) but I know the GOSL will never even hear of it...belive me I suggested it once to a "key figure" and he thought I was joking! LMSSAO!!!

Has anyone yet told this joker to go and F*CK a GOAT in real English?

This kind of jokers who knows nothing about Sri Lanka comes time to time and make requests or statements on behalf of LTTE, because of the intense lobbying that LTTE do.

These jokers seek job security in UN by making such statements. Most of these jokers do not have any real job - just waste billions of Dollars that could be put into good use. Their survival depends on making a statement or two. But they are totally ignorant of the real facts of the ground where the government is successfully fighting a war against the world's most ruthless terrorist organisation.

the usual thing. terror has a military solution. we knew it long ago.

    so the world is changing!

when LTTE says that no solution can be found by killing civilians and leaders, what it means is that it is going to kill more civilians and leaders in the future. good timing by the LTTE. the prorogation of the parliament ends tomorrow making it easier to target MPs by LTTE barbarians. but they cannot win the killing race. we will make them history pretty soon. good luck to the DPU's (LTTE) arses to ashes campaign!!

  44. The LTTE yesterday ruled out the possibility of having peace talks with the government without the participation of Norwegian facilitators.

LTTE Peace Secretariat Head, S. Pulidevan said while the organization had been in close contact with key Norwegian figures such as Erik Solheim and the Norwegian Ambassador, it would wait for the facilitators to be granted access to Kilinochchi to further discuss issues relating to future peace talks with the government.

“There are several issues we want to discuss with the Norwegian facilitators before discussing peace with the Sri Lankan government. We want to hold a meeting with the Norwegians. However the facilitators are not being granted access to enter Kilinochchi by the Sri Lankan government,” Mr. Pulidevan told the Daily Mirror in a telephone interview from Kilinochchi.

Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona had told the media in Singapore, where he is on a visit with the Foreign Minister, the government was looking for a

negotiated end to the conflict but stressed that so far the LTTE had not shown an interest to enter into such constructive dialogue.

“The LTTE is free to come back to the negotiating table but it must do so genuinely with a commitment to negotiating a sustainable peace and for that it must also leave aside its weaponry,” he said.

Dr. Kohona said the LTTE re-armed itself to hit back after the truce began in 2002, and vowed the present government was no longer willing to simply agree to a ceasefire agreement without a commitment on the part of the LTTE to achieve a final solution to this problem.

The LTTE Peace Secretariat Head meanwhile assured the safety of the Norwegians if they were to visit Kilinochchi adding that there were no security constraints in visiting the LTTE controlled areas.

“There are no security constraints in coming to Kilinochchi. We have people from the UN and other international organizations coming into our areas every day. This once again is only a false story just like my arrest,” Mr. Pulidevan said.

The government however ruled out the possibility of granting access to the facilitators into LTTE territory. A high ranking government official said while the government was fully aware of the contacts between the LTTE and the Norwegian facilitators, the Norwegians however would not be granted access into Kilinochchi anytime soon.

“Before entering Kilinochchi, the Norwegians will have to provide a clear programme to the government as to how they hope to achieve peace through their meeting with the LTTE. We have always been very grateful to the Norwegians for their facilitation but a visit by them into Kilinochci anytime soon has not been discussed,” the government official said on the condition of anonymity.Meanwhile dismissing reports that he had been arrested by the LTTE Intelligence services on the direct orders of LTTE Leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, Pulidevan said the news items were all false as there was never a move to arrest anyone within the organization.

He also dismissed reports of an internal dispute within the LTTE, insisting that the organization continued to function as usual. “The LTTE has no problems. Our only intention is to receive the Norwegians in Kilinochchi as they are the official facilitators. Till then we will not discuss anything,” he said.

  73. SLA mortar base neutralised in artillery fire - LTTE
    [TamilNet, Wednesday, 04 June 2008, 10:41 GMT]
A key Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp with its mortar launchpad at Ezhuthumadduvaa'l in the Northern Front was targeted by Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) artillery guns Wednesday morning from 10:00 a.m., LTTE officials in Vanni told media. Claiming that the mortar launchpad was neutralised in the attack, the Tigers said that the SLA had suffered heavy casualties in the artillery barrage.

Ezhuthumadduvaa'l camp of the SLA is located 3 km northwest of Mukamaalai Forward Defence Line.

Heavy explosions continued for two hours inside the SLA installation, according to the LTTE officials.

  79. Many many army trucks have been seen rushing from Ezhuthumadduval towards Palali a sure sign of many SLA casualties. Apparently the SLA was preparing for a huge push from Nagarkoil and the LTTE's pre-emptive arti barrage has now blasted the plan to smithereens.
The LTTE have attacked when soldiers from two divisions were rehearsing an orchestrated attack.
The number of dead SLA soldiers is not known but thought to be closer to a hundred which will be of course, not revealed to the innocent, GOSL revering, wishful thinking Sinhala people.

The quality of the LTTE's reconnaissance seems to be phenomenal. This proves that the LTTE has real-time intelligence on SLA movements most of the time.

There Is a Military Solution to Terror
    June 3, 2008; Page A19
    By BRET STEPHENS

Sadr City in Baghdad, the northeastern districts of Sri Lanka and the Guaviare province of Colombia have little in common culturally, historically or politically. But they are crucial reference points on a global map in which long-running insurgencies suddenly find themselves on the verge of defeat.

For the week of May 16-23, there were 300 "violent incidents" in Iraq. That's down from 1,600 last June and the lowest recorded since March 2004. Al Qaeda has been crushed by a combination of U.S. arms and Sunni tribal resistance. On the Shiite side, Moqtada al Sadr's Mahdi Army was routed by Iraqi troops in Basra and later crumbled in its Sadr City stronghold.

In Colombia, the 44-year-old FARC guerrilla movement is now at its lowest ebb. Three of its top commanders died in March, and the number of FARC attacks is down by more than two-thirds since 2002. In the face of a stepped-up campaign by the Colombian military (funded, equipped and trained by the U.S.), the group is now experiencing mass desertions. Former FARC leaders describe a movement that is losing any semblance of ideological coherence and operational effectiveness.

In Sri Lanka, a military offensive by the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has wrested control of seven of the nine districts previously held by the rebel group LTTE, better known as the Tamil Tigers. Mr. Rajapaksa now promises victory by the end of the year, even as the Tigers continue to launch high-profile terrorist attacks.

All this is good news in its own right. Better yet, it explodes the mindless shibboleth that there is "no military solution" when it comes to dealing with insurgencies. On the contrary, it turns out that the best way to end an insurgency is, quite simply, to beat it.

Why was this not obvious before? When military strategies fail – as they did in Vietnam while the U.S. pursued the tactics of attrition, or in Iraq prior to the surge – the idea that there can be no military solution has a way of taking hold with civilians and generals eager to deflect blame. This is how we arrived at the notion that "political reconciliation" is a precondition of military success, not a result of it.

There's also a tendency to misjudge the aims and ambitions of the insurgents: To think they can be mollified via one political concession or another. Former Colombian president Andres Pastrana sought to appease the FARC by ceding to them a territory the size of Switzerland. The predictable result was to embolden the guerrillas, who were adept at sensing and exploiting weakness.

The deeper problem here is the belief that the best way to deal with insurgents is to address the "root causes" of the grievance that purportedly prompted them to take up arms. But what most of these insurgencies seek isn't social or moral redress: It's absolute power. Like other "liberation movements" (the PLO comes to mind), the Tigers are notorious for killing other Tamils seen as less than hard line in their views of the conflict. The failure to defeat these insurgencies thus becomes the primary obstacle to achieving a reasonable political settlement acceptable to both sides.

This isn't to say that political strategies shouldn't be pursued in tandem with military ones. Gen. David Petraeus was shrewd to exploit the growing enmity between al Qaeda and their Sunni hosts by offering former insurgents a place in the country's security forces as "Sons of Iraq." (The liberal use of "emergency funds," aka political bribes, also helped.) Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has more than just extended amnesty for "demobilized" guerrillas; he's also given them jobs in the army.

But these political approaches only work when the intended beneficiaries can be reasonably confident that they are joining the winning side. Nobody was abandoning the FARC when Mr. Pastrana lay prostrate before it. It was only after Mr. Uribe turned the guerrilla lifestyle into a day-and-night nightmare that the movement's luster finally started to fade.

Defeating an insurgency is never easy even with the best strategies and circumstances. Insurgents rarely declare surrender, and breakaway factions can create a perception of menace even when their actual strength is minuscule. It helps when the top insurgent leaders are killed or captured: Peru's Shining Path, for instance, mostly collapsed with the capture of Abimael Guzmán. Yet the Kurdish PKK is now resurgent nine years after the imprisonment of Abdullah Ocalan, thanks to the sanctuary it enjoys in Northern Iraq.

Still, it's no small thing that neither the PKK nor the Shining Path are capable of killing tens of thousands of people and terrorizing whole societies, as they were in the 1980s. Among other things, beating an insurgency allows a genuine process of reconciliation and redress to take place, and in a spirit of malice toward none. But those are words best spoken after the terrible swift sword has done its work.

Stupid Politics is why we are in this fcuking mess.

From 1977 onwards we saw the LTTE going from strength to strength and the pinnacle of it was the 2002 CFA that Ranil the Pink-Pansy signed with the LTTE chief motherfcuker…that saw the LTTE freely haul in 19 shiploads of weapons and not only that, get international community recognition as this ponna bastard assured that the LTTE were carted off to various western cities (by the SLAF first bringing them to KIA in our own combat helicopters!) for “peace conferences” with the filthy Norwegians’ prodding…AND...

in this case, the LTTE maggots went along with the “peace ride” to get all what they wanted (e.g. dismantling of over 150 SLA camps/outposts) and simply walked out of “peace talks” when he was still the PM! Yes, this ponna bastard was really taken for a ride, but the sad thing is all of Sri Lanka paid the price ever since then!

So, who is the bloody moron saying “don’t post comments about politicians”…??? Got to be a RW arse licking, an equal caliber of a ponnaya!

"does it mesan the airstrikes today are reactions to the artillery attack?

why are the airstrikes mostly reactive and not proactive"

you got a point there, mate.

tamilnut reports a terror attack on SLA positions at 10:00 am and defence.lk reports attacking LTTE positions at 1:30 pm. the difference roughly equal the "fastest observed reaction time" of the SLAF. therefore it MAY be inferred that the SLAF, SLA attacks on tigers were REACTIONARY.

while retaliation is good, proactive attacks are the best.

    1. why weren't these LTTE positions attacked before 10 am? had the SLAF/SLA attacked these LTTE positions before 10 am, the alleged attack on SLA positions could have been avoided too. a double bonus!

    2. if you carefully analyse the jaffna front for the past three weeks, the average LTTE DEATHS in SLA offensive attacks (therefore it excludes the navy post attack incident) have fallen to a tickle. this is unacceptable. may be this allows terrorists to intensify their activities. Mi-24s have a lot to do in the jaffna front

I decided to write this after close observation of a new pattern of attack emerging by LTTE terrorist group against Sri Lanka

LTTE approach to the conflict in Sri Lanka is two fold
    1. Diplomatic
    2. Militaristic

The diplomatic approach includes using the diaspora that left the country in the 1980s to influence various foreign organizations to build a negative opinion of sri lanka. Since there are so many articles already written on this issue there is no need to elaborate.

The military approach is very cunning and deceptive

we should learn from our mistakes back in 1998-2001 during which LTTE slowly but gradually made key moves that lead to the collapse of Rivirasa operation as well as elephant pass military camp complex.

The experts already know the nitty gritty details. For those who were not familiar with some operations, it began with LTTE operations to thwart SL Navy and Air Force. First LTTE acquired shoulder fired SAMs (missiles), then expanded their Sea tiger outfit.
LTTE built the first advanced suicide craft (the low profile boat that essentially uses 4 claymore explosives positioned strategically) to blow up Sri lanka Dvoras. By these attacks LTTE managed to destroy quite a lot of SL crafts and limited the range of protection and resourced Sri Lanka navy had against LTTE.

When Navy did not have enough protection, Mi24 were used against Sea tigers, who promptly used SAMs to destroy those helicopters. (see articles in Sunday times 1998-1999). Once the range of protection was eliminated LTTE had free reign with in their safe heaven in Mulative and Nayaaru regions to transport more weapons and acquire GUIDED missiles against SL battle tanks and APC.

In the meantime SL navy could only watch through their radar installations close to tiger territory in horror what LTTE was doing.

In the meantime Sea tigers were smart enough to begin individual operations again SL navy radar installations. Now why would they do this, it never crossed the minds of dumb idiots in the Navy (who would rather kick it up and drink a glass of scotch).

the radar installations were close to EP base, were the eyes and ears to detect large groups of boats/ships. This prevented effective landing of large number of troops by LTTE. A successful attack against EP required outflanking EP from the south along kilali and east along VETTILEIKERNI (please see http://sf-3.blogsp0t.com/2008/04/mother-of-all-debacles-8-years-since.html)

Destroying radar surveillance locations lead to the fall of EP because Navy did not interpret the attack as a very grave sign and take action in time to counter LTTE trust that followed. And instead left the Army to take the brunt of attack and debacle followed.

The three forces were at full 100% fault for the fall of EP and Jayasikuru operations!

Come 2008, LTTE destroys SL Navy long range supply vessel. SL navy was in the prepatory phase to launch a long range attack against a LTTE pirate ship flotilla. US is keeping a close watch these days as they have boats in Indian ocean after a military exercise with Thai defenses. LTTE is in the process of moving another large cargo haul. This was based on intelligence that LTTE has now acquired a new batch of ships costing the organization over US $ 100 million and a weapon cargo haul of US $80 million based on Western intelligence reports originating in the South Asia and eastern Africa (Eritrea).

So LTTE`s goal now is to eliminate SL Navy operations in Mulative sea through scare tactics such as suicide bombing of vessels and . But we cant be afraid. In war you lose assets it is a fact of life, heck if you didn`t it would be peace time. but the importance of patrolling those waters and preventing the enemy an operational base is very important.

The Navy leadership in Trinco is very weak, I know he is a friend of Mahinda Rajapaksa...but he better get his act together and grow some balls to face LTTE or we put 45,000 of our boys at more danger!

The other approach in muhamali seems to be to concentrate mortar on the narrow strip leading to EP. LTTE has close to 200 + motor pads all focused on that narrow strip. It would be futile to move in and STAY IN that area while LTTE brings hell down on our boys.

The approach should concentrate on making a massive move fast towards EP while establishing an operating base on Poonaryn to resupply troops and link up south.

LTTE in the meantime is establishing new tactics to destroy SL capacity to launch long range attacks. this includes targeting the supply vessels (remember need about 10 tons of fuel to run 1000 miles each ship)

The other approach LTTE is now meticulously planning on is a prolific suicide attack against Sri Lanka Air force once the new MIG 29s arrive. What they usually do is, note shift times, who works during those shifts, individual defective characters of each guard and commander, where the air craft are parked, where the weapons are stored, where the entrances are, what type of explosive works best for each detonation and where to film the attack while it happens.

we should remember this LTTE is also war machine and they need supplies such as fuel and war items (fuel is much more important!)

restrict the enemy these in combination with other items and you will see a reduce capability to attack our military.

    more to follow

    ReplyDelete
  163. "all the SLA arti smashed"

Yes, and not only that, but also all the tanks and APC's have been destroyed, all the SLN ships in Trinco harbour destroyed and all the SLAF aircraft have been destroyed on the ground itself. Debacles happen at muhamalai every two days, in which SLA loses about 20 tanks and 300 men, not to mention the SLAF fighters and gunships that are being shot down on a daily basis. Sri Lanka is forced to buy new tanks and guns from Pakistan weekly. I hear that even our commandos and SF are unable to face the devastating attacks of the LTTE grandma brigade and tank divisions who are also aided by the extremely strong LTTE airforce. Our regular units are even now being pulled back from the lines, while our elite units are expected to hold on for a few more hours and give them time to get back safely.

  165. Tangara,

Interesting post. Yes, no doubt LTTE are trying to do something big, even though it would probably not be something like what happened back then because they now do not have the manpower they had then. They always expect to suffer much heavier damages than they inflict (which is natural when you are facing a superior force, and what has happened to them before even in the battles that they won). So if they try something like that they will expect to force the SL government to stop the war with the effectiveness of their attack and pressure from the public, rather than make the SL forces to surrender. If they go wrong it will probably be the end of them so they will not do it recklessly either. My guess is they'll try to attack civilian targets, maybe a large no. of targets at once rather than attack well defended military installations and suffer heavy casualties. (just imagine what it would be like if 25 bombs went off in Colombo in a single day. the public will panic and the government will be forced to make a decision on how to go ahead - whether to attack more and risk suffering more damage or go for negotiations. an attack on a military installation might not have the same effect, even if it is effective) But of course it could be as you said too, or maybe just now they are doing it just to get some news going in their favour. Either way, our forces shouldn't let their guard down.

    ReplyDelete
  166. tangara,

thanks mate. i read it in one breath!

yes, you got a point there. tigers are trying something big. the article clarified some doubts for which i wanted answers. makes sense.

SLN has been like the SL cricket team after the WC2007. i'm sure tigers would have aquired a new batch of ships.

this is another example of why we should go after LTTE capabilities and cadres primiarily than follow the present strategy of SLOWLY closing down LTTE's access to the seafront. also tiger BIG shipments come from the EAST and NOT from the west. i explained this in DW but my friend longranger discounted the importance of the eastern seafront comparative to the mannar front.

no attempt on KIA for more than a month and chances are indeed likely that something BIG is on the way.

but i don't agree that tigers can use SAMs against Mi-24s EASILY unless they are flying dangerously (and unnecessarily) low.

we should have the ability to destroy tiger ports preferebly when there is high activity using vessel mounted multi-rocket system. (a workable method).

"but i don't agree that tigers can use SAMs against Mi-24s EASILY unless they are flying dangerously (and unnecessarily) low."

I think the LTTE have the same problem that we have dealing with the zlins. MI-24's can fly faster than a normal transport helicopter and would be much harder to target. The instances where MI-24's were shot down were in open areas where there isn't a lot of cover and there would be enough time to get the SAM targeted on to it (such as over the sea close to the coast). But if it just appears over the trees, attacks and quickly goes back it will probably be hard to target it unless from a high place.

  188. Guys,

The bloody bastard who was responsible for the two bombs that exploded both on the train and the track in Dehiwala, has finally been caught.

The bombs have been assembled in a computer training institute in Wellawatte and explosives and other terror materials have also been found, at the place.

The other rascal was caught in Matale and the killing of a Tamil buisnessman today in Dambulla, does ring coincidental, in this context, when you take into account the geographical closeness of the two towns.

We can't shed tears for these people who encourage killing by proxy - providing safe haven for terrorists by closing their tracks. They have to pay the price.

I was surprised at the death of the lodge owner last week, after the Dehiwala train bombing; but not any more.

I think the defense authorities make no distinction between the terrorist and those who help them by stealth. It should be so and those who are engaged in these heinous acts - directly or indirectly - must think twice now.

Supporting the terroists one day and taking refuge in Mano Ganeshan's compassion, when things go wrong, are not feasible any more. That era is gone - and for ever.

Those who ruled out military solutions for terrorism, have, at last realized that it works. I think we are setting a global example in this regard.

  191. The Government finally seems to have settled on a centralized command structure to be headed by a Joint Chief of Staff. The ultimate success of this structure will depend on how much power is granted to that individual. The current structure of three independent service arms operating independently of each other and headed by the Chief of Defence Staff who has very little power has been a major weakness in the Sri Lanka defence forces. I hope the Govt will nominate General Fonseka or someone like him to that post.

    Daily Mirror Friday June 6

Cabinet approves changes to defence structure

The Cabinet has approved changes to the defence ministry structure including the setting up of a Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee under new legislation to be presented to Parliament soon, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said yesterday.
The cabinet memorandum presented by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Defence Minister stated the primary objective of the proposed legislation would be to provide for stable, efficient, transparent and accountable Higher Defence Management and Public Security Management; the effective strategic direction of the armed forces; and the joint operation of the armed forces.

In order to achieve this primary objective, the proposed legislation provides for the establishment of the following bodies within the defence and public security establishment:

    i. Defence Council under the Minister in charge of the subject of Defence.

ii. Strategic Planning Board chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of the Minister in charge of the subject of Defence.

iii. Public Security Planning Board chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of the Minister in charge of the subject of Public Security.

iv. Defence Selection and Oversight Board chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of the Minister in charge of the subject of Defence.

    v. Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee chaired by a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

vi. Integrated Defence Staff within the Ministry of the Minister in charge of the subject of Defence, in order to improve civil co-operation and co-ordination in the joint management and planning of Defence.

vii. Office of Strategic Affairs within the Ministry of the Minister in charge of the subject of Defence, in order to conduct defence and security related research, analysis and development programmes.

The proposed draft legislation would be sent to the Legal Draftsman to expeditiously prepare Draft Legislation for Higher Defence Management.

  192. chamal,

    agree.

have you seen the youtube vid of a terror attack on a mi-17 or mi-24 (its not clear)?

that was flying unusually LOW and as you said in OPEN area. tiger SAMs have a MAX range of 2.5 km altitude. practically this is lower. Mi-24s can attack from higher subject to a slight loss of accuracy.

they are EXTENSIVELY attacking tigers in a very limited area in the mannar front. i'm sure tigers have SERIOUSLY considered the use of SAMs against them. they would have even 'baited' these birds for an attack to target them. but it is impossible to shoot them down if they keep the speed and altitude. but i'm sure tigers are
waiting for that 'lose delivery' to punish.

on the other hand most Mi-24s were lost either on ground or when landing/taking-off or when engaged in non-offensive work. the 'shelf life' of a SLAF plane/copter based on historical data is very low compared to other countries that uses them (for whatever reasons). therefore, we might as well use them to the max before 'something happens'.

anyhow to repeat, tigers cannot shoot down Mi-24s due to a number of practical reasons. only complacency can destroy them.

  193. casc,

that is good news. but hopefully all these 'committees' will have a higher benefit than cost.

if they EVENTUALLY add more redtape and more layers (the whole purpose is to reduce these), we will be worse-off.

i will be checking out for the SLAF 'reaction time' to see any tangible improvement. i know it is not the proper yardstick, but i recon it is somewhat OK.

  194. so long ranger was right again!

a socalled 'DPU' attack has been carried out yesterday that is only a day after the wellawatta terror attack.

i'm sure many more such attacks have happened killing MANY LTTE leaders. it is either the one that has gone wrong (the exception) or it is LTTE's own action of killing their own civilians to bomb colombo the following day.

tigers will have to understand that every reaction has a re-reaction! WE MUST HAVE THE LAST LAUGH.
