55 division units move into Challai

Troops from the Sri Lanka Army’s 55 division moved into Challai yesterday (27th) evening. Challai LTTE defences (located south of Chundikulam) were breached in several places in the advance. SLA have not officially declared this area captured yet as search operations are still continuing. The large number of land mines and booby traps placed by the tigers have considerably slowed down clearing ops. Capture of Challai is significant to the army as it’s home to one of the last remaining naval bases of the LTTE. 55 division is commanded by Brigadier Prasanna Silva, a former Special Forces commander who chased LTTE out of Vakarai back in 2007.

Military intelligence (MI) earlier received information that LTTE had hidden its light aircraft in Challai region. So far however, no traces of such aircraft have been found.

Meanwhile a large group of civilians fleeing into government controlled territory were attacked by LTTE yesterday morning. MI estimates the number of deaths to exceed 20 in this incident alone.

  5. We all very well know that Prabhakaran is done and dusted. I am amused at the Tamil Diaspora's disappointment!
The LTTE yes will now have to operate as a deep undercover guerilla unit but their backs broken.
It was actually broken long time ago, when Anton Balasingham died. He was always the brains and strategist. Never Prabha.
After Anton's death, it has been a downward slide.
    He he he...

  6. Dhammika,
The LTTE is not broken even if we win the war.The main reason the LTTE lasted this long was the support they had from these di-ass-phora fellows.Supposedly these LTTE di-ass-phora fellows are "banned" in europe. This "banning" is simply by word.Their actions are not banned and they continue. The only real defence we have is to educate ALL our people so that they can compete for jobs overseas. There is nothing like a large sinhala community overseas..afterall what counts are votes.

  8. Rajarata..

Did you think this massive war effort came this far without due consideration for all possible outcomes, opportunities and threat preparedness?

There are many options available to the SLG and most of them have not even been used yet. In fact, the scale of military ops will be narrowed down, to rest and regroup the assault forces who conducted ops so far and induct specialized crack units to do specific targetting such as decapitation strikes.

  9. Guys.. Watch this video and listen to this carefully, it exposes LTTE.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzvmqoAR0zE

An Artillery Guns fires from very close by.

That means, LTTE has located artillery into the Safe Zone as the GOSL claimed.

  15. Demonising a Neighbour

It has been the habit of some of our media to make a mountain out of molehill whenever an Indian politician or a top bureaucrat vistis the country.

Some who voice concern are famously anti-Indian and therefore, understandable. Some just want to make a drama, in the absence of that stuff on war theatre as a continous flow.

Last year, when the top defence delegation came - as a part of Prime Minsiter's visit for the SAARC summit - the media circle went into a hyper-mode - the warning of an invasion by India, if military oslaught was not halted.

The last was the visity by the Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjie. The elder gentleman, time and again, said explicitely about the Lanka's right to deal with terrorists. He emphasized the same just before he left for Sri Lanka on Indian Soil. So, it is not Lanka-appeasement. Prior to his visit, some of our media wanted us to believe that he came to read the riot act - utter non-sense.

The world has changed since 80's. Our politicians who ruled during that time were behaving in such a way that the neighbour got alarmed at it; adding insult to injury, Premadasa and the likes openly ridiculed Gandhi family just because they were closer to Bandaranayake. So, India did the obvious - messed up our North. Of course, they we both ultimately paid a heavy price, in the end.

We have come a long way since then. India enjoys a very close relationship with the country - most probably warmest in the region as far as India is concerned. India has heavily invested in the country, something they can't even think of in its Muslim neighbours. We have the privilege to visit each other with the least form hindrance getting in the way, unless Tamil Tigers spoil that with some form of racketeering or threat to its internal security.m

A vast majority of Indians don't have a problem with us. Only a certain section in Tamil Nadu are up in arms. That will also die down in due course, as it is just impulsive in nature. The cocktail of misplaced sentiment is not known for leaving a lasting impact on the user.

The alleged involvement of RAW in rescuing Prabha must be looked at in this context.

The Prime Minister, Dr Singh said clearly in the parliament in the wake of Mumbai attack that India does not want to be accused of adopting double-standards while dealing with terrorism.

It is beggars belief their involvement defying the central government, international covenants, interpol and above all the one of the most hated figures in the country - who materminded in humiliating its armed forces and killing a prime minister - in this plot.

It is said that truth is first casualty of war. Spreading falshehood may be an intermediate fantasy, then.

Let's stop this India bashing right now. We paid a heavy price for barking up the wrong tree in the past.

We can draw consolation from the fact our leader, Hon MR, did not get carry away with this euphoria.

He is dealing with the neighbour in the right way; history may prove it was the best way.
