Elephant Pass, A-9 Highway now under SLA control

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) now has the full control of A-9 (Jaffna-Kandy) highway for the first time in several years. The entire Elephantpass area including the former tiger stronghold of Pallei too is now under SLA control. The former EPS base complex which was manned by the 54 division and overrun by the tigers in 2000, too has been recaptured. An official announcement on the capture is yet to be made. Most of LTTE’s 1000-1500 strong force deployed in this area have fled towards their final remaining stronghold in Mullaithivu. The rest has been killed by the army.

There was however one incident reported yesterday in Pallei. Lt. Colonel N.Kumarasinghle of the SLA who was attached to the Air Mobile Brigade, was killed due to an IED explosion during a search and clearing mission.

LTTE fiercely defended the Muhamalai, Nagarkovil and Kilali axis on several previous occasions which resulted in many casualties for the army. However the SLA, with all the disadvantages on their side, were able to capture two of the tiger’s forward defence lines in these battles. With the 58 division’s capture of Paranthan and their entry into southern EPS, the LTTE fighters along the national front found themselves facing the wrath of 3 divisions advancing from three different directions. This is when LTTE’s final defences in the Muhamalai/Nagarkovil/Kilai axis collapsed and their fighters fled to Mullaithivu.

  24. Mahen Saying

Poddu Amman, LTTE intelligence wing leader and former second in command of the LTTE has surrendered to the GoSL. The surrender took place in an undisclosed location when the LTTE veteran handed himself over to a SLA Special Forces unit. This news does not come as shock to loyal followers of the LTTE as our supreme commander had fallen out with Poddu Amman for his failure to effectively target the GoSL military commanders and top politicians. The President of Tamil Eelam banished the intelligence wing leader a few weeks ago, and ever since then Mr Amman had been looking for ways to give himself up to the GoSL as he feared for his life from LTTE loyalists who were unhappy with his performance. Mr Amman has been taken into Special Forces custody and is held in undisclosed location where he is being interrogated by Sri Lankan security apparatus. Our source has relayed to us that the surrender of Mr Amman will not affect LTTE operations in any way as he was gradually relieved of his duties, and is not known to hold any sensitive information regarding the LTTE. A replacement intelligence wing leader has already been found, EFT will not disclose her name for national security reasons.

The achievement was made by the troops of the 591st Brigade of the 57th Division. It was more than 20 feet high. The defence bund had been put up between Alampil and Mullaitivu. The 17th Gemunu Hewa Regiment shattered another part of the earth bund. The achievement was made after intense fighting for three days. One of the main military tactics of the LTTE to prevent the troops from advancing into LTTE dominated areas was to build such massive earth bunds. This bund ends at the coast between Mullaitivu and Alampil. A strong bunker had been built in between every 30 meters."

    Saturday, 20 December 2008Plain truth

    Mahen said

“Knowing it is a no-win situation for the infantry, the GOSL propaganda machine is diverting the observer’s attention to sea and air based activities in the hope of scraping some popular support for continual military aggression. LTTE sources from the front lines confirm that according to information extracted from captured SLA soldiers (including high ranking warrant officers), the GOSL is seriously considering a ceasefire or at least a suspension of hostilities towards the Tamils, the citizens of Thamil Eelaam.”

    Sunday, 21 December 2008

    Army Moves into Nedunkerni

“LTTE battlefield commanders informed this blog owner that they fail to see why the town is of such importance to the SLA, and added that the move only contributes to thinning out of the 59th division and the TF4, which would expose the units stationed their to LTTE commando raids.”

    Monday, 22 December 2008

Demonstration against the LTTE - A farce

“Though the practicalities and logistics of these alliances may appear to be, at best, a compromise, or at worst, a total surrender to the invader, the reality of this particular demonstration is that the Tamil citizens of Yalpanam were forced or misdirected to perform this activity for GOSL propaganda purposes.”

    Tuesday, 23 December 2008

    Latest addition to TAF fleet

“The latest addition to the TAF fleet is the Pilatus PC-7. The Pilatus PC-7 is the trainer version of the military version Pilatus PC-7 MK II in use by the South African air force for border patrols, ground-to-air attacks, intercepting low / slow flying aircrafts (such as attack helicopters), and counter insurgency missions.”

    WEDNESDAY, 24 DECEMBER 2008
    Kilinochchi & the IDP Crisis
“An “unceasing waves” type counter attack is believed to be the only way to regain the lost ground and this is expected soon. According to sources close to LTTE military strategy panel this monumental counter attack is expected to be on land, sea and air.”

    FRIDAY, 26 DECEMBER 2008
As an Year comes to an end...
“Also, the LTTE strategists are maintaining a higher level of secrecy as things hot-up nearing the counter attack – which would be a mother of all counter attacks. I have been struggling to reach some of my closest and most reliable contacts/sources in Kilinochchi and Mulathivu in the past few days. The festive season may have been a contributing factor.”

    TUESDAY, 30 DECEMBER 2008
    Tactical withdrawals and tactical manoeuvres
“Meanwhile, speculation is rife about a schism in the LTTE hierarchy. Rumours are circulating that Poddu Amman and Colonel Soosai have been relieved of duties, and various other Colonels are under house arrest. The blog owner can confirm that these reports are entirely without merit and there is not even a shred of truth in these fabrications. Poddu Amman, Colonel Soosai and the other Colonels are in their respective positions and have the full support of our leader. Also there was news that Colonel Ramesh was seriously injured and in a critical condition, we can confirm that Colonel Ramesh did suffer from shrapnel wounds, however, the injuries are not life threatening in any way and he is expected to recover very soon and lead from the front in the coming few days.”

    WEDNESDAY, 31 DECEMBER 2008
    LTTE vacates from Paranthan
Although Paranthan has fallen, supply lines to EPS and the MKN axis are intact as the LTTE never used the A9 to service defences north of Paranthan. As well as using covert land routes, EPS and MKN are being serviced by the sea tigers.

    THURSDAY, 1 JANUARY 2009
    Iranamadu withdrawal
“The LTTE's cadre strength and armoury is at 95% capacity. The ammo dumps are well stocked with supplies that reached in from the eastern coast last week. The battle hardened and well trained cadres have hardly been used during the current operations, and the modern arti and mortar rounds have not been utilised yet. Thus, the LTTE is expected to launch devastating counter attacks in the coming few weeks. The true might of LTTE's military strength will come to light once the SLA attempts to advance along the A35 towards Mullaitivu

    FRIDAY, 2 JANUARY 2009
    LTTE withdraws from Kilinochchi
These developments are most disheartening to all Thamils and if there should be a counter attack it should happen NOW. As I said in a previous post, it is very difficult to get military information from the LTTE hirarchy at the moment. Our usual sources have fallen silent and we can only speculate with regards to the Tigers' future plans.”

    SATURDAY, 3 JANUARY 2009
    Breaking News
The leader was reported to have sworn at Velavan as he was withdrawing againts the supreme commander's specific orders to defend Kilinochchi at all costs. Mr Prabhakaran was reported to have told Velavan to never come within his sight again. The LTTE intelligence wing has started internal investigations to assess Velavan's future as an operational commander

    SUNDAY, 4 JANUARY 2009
    Heavy fighting continues
Pro GoSL propoganda sites are claiming the occupation of Oddusudan and mentions that they have "entered" the township. The blog owner can confirm that a few SLA commando teams did enter the town in a pre-dawn offensive, however they were driven away by heavy mortar and HMG fire. Following the commando withdrawal, wave after wave of regular SLA infantrymen tried to advance on the town, however, the offensive was successfully repulsed and the LTTE is in full control of the town

    MONDAY, 5 JANUARY 2009
    LTTE withdraws from Oddusudan
Reliable sources have informed this blog owner that the LTTE has completed its tactical withdrawal from the Oddusudan township and the surrounding areas. The tactical withdrawal follows LTTE successful harvest operations against the advancing SLA infantry units.

    MONDAY, 5 JANUARY 2009
    Tiger vacate Elephant Pass
“The LTTE's overall strategy is now very clear. They have decided to forego occupation of symbolic towns and villages to regroup in the Mullaitivu jungles and launch guerilla raids on the SLA.”

    TUESDAY, 6 JANUARY 2009
    LTTE commandos rescue stranded cadres
“A number of LTTE regular cadres were stranded between the Muhamalai / Kilali defence lines and the EPS complex due to the advancing SLA infantry units. A sudden breakdown in communications meant that the cadres were not able to withdraw timely in line with the orders. The tactical withdrawal from the national front was in line with the plan devised by the LTTE military panel.”

    TUESDAY, 6 JANUARY 2009
SLA Infiltration Attempt Thwarted - Puthukkudyiruppu
“News has just reached us that an advanced team of SLA's Commando regiment, operating several miles ahead of their FDLs, tried to breach LTTE defence lines in Puthukkudyiruppu.”

“The SLA spurred on by empty "victories" in Kilinochchi and Jaffna underestimated the strength of the LTTE in its Mullaitivu hinterland and tried to take on the Tigers in their own backyard. The doomed operation has resulted in loss of morale among SLA commandos.”

    TUESDAY, 6 JANUARY 2009
Fresh conflicts among SLDF top brass
“News has just emerged of a major conflict brewing between the top brass of the Sri Lankan defence establishment. The conflict has reached epic proportions so much so that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDF) Air Chief Marshall Donald Perera was not able to defuse the tension.”

    FRIDAY, 9 JANUARY 2009
    Supreme Commander alive and well
“The Commander is safe in the Wanni and is directing his troops from a secret location. I urge all readers not to believe these completely unsubstantiated claims.”

This coming Sunday, we will publish our first weekly defence column

  45. No matter how verse and phrase slice 'em, the facts are clear;

There is no seperate state within the island of Sri lanka and there never will be.

The LTTe is finished. Ittespective of it's pretexes and posturing to statehood, the business suit clad thugs never really made the class. The chena boys effectively beat the crap out of them and turned them back into who they are, monkeys in a stinky jungle.

There is no more major fighting to be observed in high profile by the international community. The people are hostages in a malarial jungle, held by a bunch of narco-terrorists, and the SL state will be conducting military/police operations to relieve them and clear the threat.

    ENDGAME is here.

  49. I really enjoyed Mahen's writings. The guy should really make a career change into becoming a fiction writer. In particular I loved the part abt 'SL commandos being demoralized'. Perhaps mahen didn't know it, but all our commandos are so demoralized by his writings, the majority are contemplating suicide, the remainder wants to surrender to the LTTE. The brigadiers may even surrender to mahen...

Mullaitivu is under attack with a quick sea-denial strategy. As was expected, the SLDf will drive the LTTE deeper into the jungles. If pottu is in our custody, then info would be invaluable not only for targetting, but also for strategic infilteration and intel. Our guys will make him talk and provied us facts.

I expected the intial attacks on Mullaitivu to be probing, harassment strikes, designed to provoke reaction, to allow our guys estimate their primary, seconday (etc) defensive structures and readiness. But in actuality, it looks more like a steamroller, blitzkrieg. That may perhaps be to continue with a relentless barrage to disallow ground defensive preparations.

The successes so far in Mullaitivu have come without even the specialized troops or the mechanized brigade entering the game. Air strikes have not been sustained either. When the juggernaut of 5 divisions home in, it will be adios to Velu. Wish we get to put his scalp for sale on eBay.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Though all predictions are for a protracted guerilla fight, there's a rising possibility of an unexpected collapse, and even aaasination of velu by the second line LTte and then a mass surrender.

There's no need to take either velu or his son alive.

  57. Quote from the Presidents Address to the Nation.

"You would have already realized that the aim of these conspirators is to level unfounded charges against the Army Commander who works with the greatest dedication to achieve these victories, and by this to destroy the morale of our troops, destabilize the country, tarnish the image of the country internationally, and make room for various international forces to interfere to grab our gains away from us.

We are aware that such conspiracies arise when a country moves ahead without giving in to external pressures. It is for no reason other than to embarrass our country internationally that my friend and Member of Parliament Joseph Pararajasingam was assassinated while in church at Christmas service.

What purpose other than tarnishing of the country's image internationally could there be in carrying out a bomb attack on the office of the Udayan newspaper published in Jaffna on World Press Freedom Day?

At a time when Thoppigala was being freed from the hold of terrorists an effort was made to distract from the importance of this victory by the abduction of a journalist from an English language newspaper and assaulting him.

After many years our troops freed Vedithaltivu dealing major defeat to the terrorists. The day after that a camp for the Internally Displaced Persons at Vavuniya was set ablaze.

Who is it that stands to gain from all this? Is not the aim of those who plan these incidents the belittling of the victories of our heroic troops? We have a duty to expose to the country the persons behind these conspiratorial operations. One must not mistake these conspiracies as being against me or my government. This is a conspiracy against the entire country by those who have been driven to fear due to the successes of our security forces."

I think there is no way out for the tigers except through death so what is the alternative or the next option is put their hands up surrender and get a honourable escort and even a red carpet if we are stupid enough. If he is caught I ASSUME that he died bravely as a fighter or is going have a second birth due tour naivety and escape to the international arena to propagate their cause. All the propaganda let out by them is to feed us indicating that there is a split is BS and I would restrain our emotions and show caution. I have being had a festive drink or two and perhaps I dreamt that ‘he died in a battle if you can get the drift’? Act wisely I say as so many lives of our brave hearts have being sacrificed and the end of the tiger operations in Vanni is near and it must be to an absolute END.

If our Hon president is worried about the country’s international image then he must correct his own mates like Mervin Silva who attacked journalists and TV station, getting rid of the chairman of Srilankan and getting rid of some innocent expatriates to satisfy some narrow minded lobby he is moving about with completely ignoring us the party workers and I hope he is not going to miss judge the mood of the people in the country, irrespective of the victories won in the North, perhaps the unpopularity of War time Prime Minister Churchill is a reminder to all politicians and to quote Harold Wilson that ‘two weeks in politics is too long for comfort’ That’s how fortunes change, just as MPs of one party jumping from one party to another in a such a short time.
It is foolish to blame that the MTV is attacked by the opposition as it’s head is one time General Secretary of the UNP one Mr Kapukotuwa and I can’t see the logic there and his Mervin and the likes of him has been caught attacking the media, thus putting us to shame and we are waiting the Hon president to sack him and that’s what we will insist if the President meets us next in UK.Our party is never known to have thugs and as far as we know that this Mr Lasantha Wickramasinghe is in the SLFP party and during CBK’s time when he exposed the corruption then, he had mentioned to one of our concerned member that he supports the party but he will fearlessly report the bad deeds. I remember he too exposed the miss deeds of the other parties that includes about UNPer Choksey and so many others. We should not fear to face criticism and if it is not true there is the courts to take action but not by a bullet.
My deepest sympathies to his family.

  62. Never have I agreed on these sort of killings and thuggery.

The previous post does not say who is to blame. But it says there is no logical reason for the GOV to be involved in this kind of activity, because of its recent ratings (because of the war). And I just posted a comment that was made.

On the other hand certain elements would gain, from this murder at this point (and the resulting pressures caused on the GOV). EX: LTTE

By the way the above is just one possible reason.

We should consider every possible reason behind this killing. Our judgments should be based on reason and not be based on feelings.

Remember things may not be the same as we see. The possibilities are

    1. May be some group involved with the government.

    2. May be some other political party in SL.

    3. May be other rouge elements (armed groups)

    4. May be Personal disputes

Options 3 and 4 are highly likely because you know for sure that certain media groups will account the death on the accounts of 1 and 2. (4 is highly unlikely in the case of MTV, or may be it was Mervin. We don't know for sure do we?)

And the point that one should also consider is that how come these sort of major issues occur at certain crucial points of our history!!

We should wait until all investigations are over before pointing fingers at each other. Having said that I also believe certain investigations are lagging because people involved in the investigations are either

    1. Corrupt
    2. Bound by some sort of restrictions
    3. Incompetent or competent people are not assigned

That's why the media etc should pressurize the investigations. And if the GOV claims they are not involved, they should make every possible action to speed up the investigations.

This will be my last post regarding this matter (Because this is not the blog where we should discuss these sort of matters)

    POTTU AMMAN Surrenders

    Friday, 9 January 2009
    Poddu Amman surrenders to GoSL

A replacement intelligence wing leader has already been found, EFT will not disclose her name for national security reasons

Accordind to ITN news SIRASA has got cctv camaras every inch of the building & they refuse to release the CCTV footage of the incident.

You don't need to know about rocket science to figure out who did it.
Any traitors to our motherland who try to spoil our common vision on terrorism should not be treated any different to LTTE. If we do ,we all have a serous problem in our nation.

  69. STF,

What ITN says does not make any sense. As we speak, police and CID have to be there to investigate the crime. If so, all these tapes are evidence and Sirasa has to surrender them to the police. Otherwise, it is called obstruction of justice. I know that most of these terms don't mean a thing in today's Sri Lanka. Given the powers the police has in Sri Lanka, it should be an easy thing for police to extract these tapes of backup disks. Therefore, ITN story does not make any sense to me.

  70. LTTE's airstrip in Mullaittivu captured

LTTE's another airstrip located in general area Keppapularu, 6.5Km northwest of Mullayavalai town centre in Mulaittivu has been captured by the troops of 59 Division on offensive march towards Mullaittivu today, 10 January.

Soldiers of the 9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Janaka Ariyaratne under 593 Brigade commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Jayantha Goonaratne launched an offensive operation a few days ago and captured the part of the airstrip by Friday evening (9 Jan) amidst stiff resistance given by the terrorists. Following days long fighting, troops have totally captured the airstrip by 9.00 AM today causing heavy damages to the enemy, military sources said.

The captured LTTE airstrip, over 2000m long and 20m wide field, having a tarmac over 1000m loan, military sources in Mullaitivu front said. Two hangers and several partially destroyed huts are also on the airstrip, sources added.

Sri Lanka Army has so far captured 4 airstrips of the LTTE terrorists during the ongoing counter terrorist operations. First airstrip was captured by the 57 Div in Panikkankulam area, the second was captured by the TF 1 in the Nivil area while the third LTTE built airstrip was captured by Task Force 3 in a jungle area south of Iranamadu tank.

  71. Key suspect arrested

    Rafik JALALDEEN

A key suspect behind the attack on the MTV/MBC station was arrested and the Government is requesting the public and media to be patient till investigations are complete.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is a friend of the media has instructed the police to use maximum effort to bring to book culprits responsible for the attack on the Sirasa TV station and assassination of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha.

The Black Defender without a number plate was allegedly hidden at a house belonging to the Kotte Municipal Council Opposition Leader. Picture by Suranjith Perera, Dehiwela- Mount Lavinia group correspondent.

Vehemently denying allegations against the Government for the Sirasa attack, Power and Energy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said key suspects behind the Sirasa TV attack were arrested and with strong evidence the suspects behind the attack will be brought before justice.

Elaborating the series of incidents that happened before the attack on MTV/MBC station on Wednesday morning, Minister Aluthgamage said Ravi Karunanayake, MP and some other key figures including former Minister Karu Jayasuriya had allegedly met at a flat behind Cycle Bazaar in Borella.

“They had invited Jayasuriya to hide the real motive of the meeting and police are investigating into details regarding the meeting,” he said.

Meanwhile, several hours before the attack on Sirasa, an Opposition MMC from Sri Jayawardanapua, Kotte reportedly stormed the Dewuram Vihara in Pannipitiya near the Sirasa TV and allegedly ordered the monk to come to his house to chant pirith.

“Police arrested the suspect and later he apologized to the monk,” he added.

Two hours following the attack on Sirasa, a call had been received on emergency number 118 informing that a white van was exchanging arms with a Black Defender opposite the HSBC Bank in Rajagiriya.

“Police intelligence traced the Black Defender without a number plate and it was hidden at a house belonging to the Kotte Municipal Council Opposition Leader,” added Minister Aluthgamage.

Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle was not registered in the name of the MMC Opposition leader. He also stressed that the Sirasa CCTV was not functioning at the time of the attack and the management was requested to bring the CCTV tape to gather evidence.

The earth bund-as can be made to rebuild all of our water ways, irrigation canals etc, while the air-strip bundas can be used to construct regional air strips.

    2. Speed Boat + Sea Plane combination

    ReplyDelete
  77. amavi,

LTTE cannot have the services of a submarine.

    1. they cannot have a sizable sub to evacuate vp. using homemade subs or small ones in the high seas is suicidal

    2. hiring a sub is not possible as very few got it.

    3. if hired from a collector, etc. it will not have detection systems exposing it to be detected and destroyed.

    4. but IF india wants to save him, it can do so this way

    seaplane...

anton bala flew in a sea plane. but LTTE cannot have the use of sea planes that can travel beyond india. going to maldives too is a big risk for them.

but if tigers can somehow get to maldives by whatever means UNDETECTED, escape is assured. indian and SL authorities should increase awareness in this sector.

  80. The Diaspora fund raisers are said to be jealously guarding the remains of the funds meant to finance LTTE military operations. LTTE funds have suffered losses due to prevailing economic conditions. Diaspora Fund raisers are in a quandary on whether to release the remaining funds to the LTTE finance wing as they have been taken in by rumours of increasing leadership conflicts within LTTE’s high command. They are also said to be fearful of Poddu’s interrogation outcomes as it would blow the cover off LTTE’s overseas fund raising activities and leave them exposed to criminal proceedings and civil litigation from jurisdictions where the LTTE is banned.

"A’pura hospital buries Tiger bodies. The ICRC had informed it was difficult to find LTTE officials to hand over the bodies."

This is very significant. It means that the LTTE's formal organizational structure has collapsed. There can't be any coordination without a command and control structure. Now each terrorist will be on his own. Most likely outcome will be that those who can flee will flee, most likely by boat to India.

All of the dry-zone of Lanka gets enough rainfall for sugar cane cultivation.

In the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo they get about 1200 mm of rainfall annually. They use no irrigation, all rain fed.

The dry zone get about 1250 mm of rainfall annually in Lanka. So water is no problem :)

Last I heard, the government has recognised 40,000 hectares around the Anuradhapura that are suitable for sugar cane. I think they are looking for investors. We can produce about 230 million liters of ethanol per year. About one third of our annual requirement.

Hopefully they will plant the right kind of sugar cane variety that will produce a lot of ethanol. For this we must get Brazil involved. They have about 550 varieties of sugar cane. Some of those varieties are ethanol producing wonders.
