Two more task forces for Mullathivu battle

The Sri Lanka Army plans to raise two more task forces to aid in Mullaithivu battle. Task Force 5 and Task Force 6 will be deployed in addition to 53, 55, 57, 58, 59 , TF2, TF3 and TF4 already deployed in the Wanni theater of battle. Meanwhile Task Force 1 has now officially been raised as the 58 division in recognition for its invaluable contribution in the Kilinochchi, Paranthan battles. More than 50000 soldiers from 10 divisions/Task Forces are expected to join the assault on Mullathivu, the last major stronghold of the LTTE. Some of the formations will be tasked with holding onto captured territory while fully offensive divisions will lead the advance. The army does not want to spread too thin and run into a possible Jayasikuru type scenario again.

Meanwhile 48 bodies of LTTE cadres who were killed in battles in Mullathivu and Kilinochchi are still in Vavuniya hospital. The recent army advances on multiple fronts seems to have severely affected the LTTE’s organizational structure. No LTTE officials were to be seen since the removal of LTTE checkpoints in Omanthai and Oddusudan about two weeks ago.

Since you are a critic with lot of good points on, what's your view about http://ellalanforce.blogspot.com/ article related to LTTE funds.

    1) Funds in banks getting wiped out - Looks to me a fact because of ongoing Banking issues.

    2) LTTE oversease players pulling money to get a slice of remainders - Well... if this is true, that means surely those guys knows this would be the end for LTTE.

  10. Did Gota go to Indonesia to stop Velu fleeing abroad???

A highly bribe-able Indonesia is the best place to flee, since India loves Velu a tad too much. Piggy's logistic hub, arms shipments, arms all come via Indonesia!

Prabha will try to flee country-Govt
The government said yesterday that LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran would never face the valiant security forces relentlessly moving forward, and he might attempt to flee the country as the military close in on his jungle hideout.

    Ok, agreed.

On a serious note, about the LTTE funding subject you raised.

    1) Gota going to Indonesia as a connection. Indonesia is notorious as a conduit for Money Laundering operations. Maybe the LTTE is trying siphon off funds from the diaspora countries to Indonesia where it is protected? Gota maybe trying to prevent that by getting the Indonesians on our side.

    2) SunFkr said that fights have broken out in Paris and other LTTE circles on the funding. Apparently they are trying to divide the funding. Mahen also confirmed this. Also I heard that Tamil businesses are sick of LTTE fund collectors and paying them taxes.

    Thoughts welcome.

  24. Greetings Modaya Chena Boys,

Long time no see. You madams actually think that by raising another two task forces you are going to finish off the LTTE? I can see that a few nitwits jumping up and down convinced that the LTTE is finished. You monkeys have another thing coming! Does anyone have a clue why the LTTE has not used artillery attacks recently? You are walking into a well set trap bozos. We are gonna concentrate all the divisions and task forces in a smaller area and hit you hard!!! Just wait and see.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm surprised by the apparent unravelling of the LTTE's overseas finance and support network. I'd believed them to be totally committed and exhibit the blind, unthinking obedience seen of so many revolutionary movements, like the early communists.

It seems that the 'good life' in the wicked West has corrupted them, after all.

I was expecting some kind of mass suicide like that seen Jonestown episode in Guyana, when Jim Jones's followers committed mass suicide (they called it "revolutionary suicide") by drinking poisoned Kool Aid?

    Any Eelamists, please comment. Thanks.

Mahen, everyone's aware that the LTTE have managed to save most of their heavy artillery during their retreat. A creditable performance. No doubt they also have plenty of hidden stocks of artillery and ammo, for just such an eventuality. But this is unlikely to save them, as long as SLA keep their focus and maintain momentum.

  26. Mango,

The dieasspora was loyal to the LTTE as it was their ticket to the West. In the past years, any Tamil in Sri Lanka could go to the West, cry genocide and human rights and get refugee status. Eventually, they would become citizens. The LTTE helped in getting many Tamils abroad and funded their business. In those days, LTTE was their Lord God and Saviour. Over the years, the loyalty wore out and the LTTE and especially their thug collectors became a nuisance. It was a neccessary evil. However, the dieasspora couldn't wait to get rid of these pests. The dieasspora care about no one but themselves, now that the LTTE is falling apart (?), they have just got themselves a get out route, no longer are they scared of the LTTE and they are fighting to get back the money that was extorted from them. These are the fights that are going on. This was their plan all along, they weren't loyal to Eelam, they were loyal to their bank accounts!

  28. Mo,

You wrote what I suspected about the LTTE diaspora in the West.

I think, ironically, they should be the ones praying for an end to the LTTE, as they'll be able to carry on with their lives in the West, without paying the LTTE tax.

If they were really committed to Eelam, why would the LTTE need tax collectors to use threats?

The diaspora should be be beating a path to the tax collector's door, rather than the tax collectors beating down diaspora's doors :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hey Rotten Mango,

Yes, we accept there are fights going among fund collectors. However, our foreign reps are working on it and will resolve it soon. We have proven methods of resolving these things. Your cockiness at your empty victories is short lived chena boys, we are getting ready to launch full scale offensives.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mahen,

I've never been cocky and never underestimated the destructive nature of the LTTE. The military equation still does not favour the LTTE. Name calling won't change that.

I guess your 'proven method' is a bullet in the head to those Eelamists that disagree with you? You should also apply this to Bruce Fein who appears to have walked away with a nice tidy sum from your supporters' savings. I think the GOSL should give him an award for services to Sri Lanka.

very good point mate. Because most of those western based LTTE funders do not have any one in SL any more.
Therefore what you said make lot of sense.

    Hay Mahen,
I should say that we are very happy to see that you are still carrying out lot of posting. Thank you for that and keep those coming.

Therefore is there any chance we can find out about what are LTTE's thought about joining the politicals side? After all TS's sucesser, ex SL policeman uncle Nada need a role soon.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Mango,

Agreed. But let’s not jump to conclusions too soon, its not over till its over. The reason being that there are still quite a few hardcore diaspora LTTE supporters left and these people are the pillars of the Tamil communities abroad and the average Tamil looks up to them. Here in the UK we have City Councillors who also run the LTTE operations. Daya Idalkiyar and Packia Devi Mann are good examples. This hardcore bunch is unwavering in their support for the LTTE and do not flinch. Until we weed them out, the diaspora may willingly fund the LTTE as they look up to these pillars and follow their example. Furthermore UK MPs and politicians are complicit in the affairs of the LTTE, remember politicians only care about votes, therefore they pander to the wishes of the LTTE in the hope of getting votes.

In France, Italy, Germany, Norway etc. the situation is a bit different. The diaspora are made up of generally low or unskilled workers, so the thug and extortion culture works there, and the general diaspora person is sick of the LTTE. They want them out. In the UK, the diaspora tends to be higher skilled with many professionals among them and their support for the LTTE is voluntary.

Meeharak Mahen, please tactically withdraw to your own blog, why do you come here? Is no one reading your posts, loser!

  36. 10 successive air raids targeting LTTE defences, gathering places - Mullaittivu

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) carried out 10 successive air raids targeting observed LTTE gathering places and defence line in Mullaittivu from this morning, 13 January.

Air Force spokesperson, Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, speaking to defence.lk said that SLAF fighter jets and MI-24 helicopters engaged on these targets.

The LTTE defence line in south of Mullaittivu was targeted in four separate occasions to assist the ground troops of 59 Division advancing towards Mullaittivu. SLAF MI-24 helicopters raided the enemy defence line at 9.10AM and 3.35PM while jets raided the same defence line at 9.20Am and 11.30AM.

Meanwhile, fighter jets have raided LTTE gathering places in Mullaittivu five separate occasions, spokesperson added. Based on information gathered through continuous air surveillances, air sorties were launched at 10.15AM, 12.10PM, 1.45PM, 3.15PM and 6.00PM.

Separately, jets have raided LTTE vehicles carrying two heavy artillery guns in general area Chundikulam around 4.00PM. SLAF fighter jets immediately launched air sorties once observed LTTE vehicle movement caring artillery guns from Chundikulam towards Chalai. Two LTTE artillery guns were completely destroyed due to the attack, air force spokesperson confirmed.

  38. Mo,

Totally agree with your comments about the UK LTTE diaspora. As a Londoner, I've seen the indulgence with which they've been treated by both Labour & Tories (with a few exceptions).

The hard core element in the UK is not amenable to discussions and or negotiations. Theirs is a very binary world view, and hopefully one that the SLA will shortly shatter into a million unretrievable pieces.

GOSL should not expect any overt support from the current UK govt, other than bleating about 'no military solution'.

The LTTE diaspora will be allowed to continue their fundraising without too much interference, as the UK's security services are concentrating their efforts on Islamic terrorists.

Ok gys now before we deal with official news breaks lets look at how a defection in this kind would take place.

let us be clear to the fact that people with a profile just don't wave a white flag and run across a FDL in surrendering to the ememy.usually there are a few methods of how ltte leaders have surrendered to the GOSL.

1.the commonest method has been though direct contact of the military intel wing.many including karuna(partly by MI and partly by a external foreign source) and a handful of suicide bombers have defected in this method. one of the high profilers was 'newton' the one time deputy of ltte intel.

2.some have contacted foreign missions involved in lankan affairs and have surrendered though them.in this way they seek security guarantees from the missions for their safy concerns while making available themselves for the sri lankan security apparatus.

3.some have directly contacted foreign agencies and then defected directly though them.SF does not wish to discuss this issue for the time being.

dealing with the ltte moles and informants were traditionally handled by the directorate of iternal intelligence the former NIB.but in the 90's army established its own Intel division the and since then the state and military intel have been dealing with tigers and out of that too as far as the ltte is concerned, it has been the MI which has taken the lead while state Intel taking more of a political and economic intel role.so in the past there have been two major defections on the part of the ltte.the most well known was karuna ammans defections which was almost solely handled by the military intel despite karuna informing and getting some channels working with powerful external agencies for his safety and well being.

a few days ago a top ltte high ranker defected to the GOSL.the man was high in the ltte profile ,a member of the ltte inner circle and was what is known as a prize catch.before he surrendered he wanted security guarantees from the state.which was readily given.so how will the public react to such a move...?

the govt has its focus on ending the war.for that at times we have to contact the enmy 'fish them' and at times even make deals with people we would have otherwise have killed.

the best example of this situation is vp.a powerful nation involved in sri lankan affairs has already offered vp guarantees of safe passage out of sri lanka if he so wishes.he will have to move out with a few other conditions and in exchange he will have safe passage and will have to live in exile.he will not be harmed but will never be able to move out from the place he will be moved to and can live as a comparative free man without much issues.vp has done immense damage to this country concerned which has offered him this position.so if this to leak out the nation concerned will have to deal with immense internal pressure stemming out of public opinion.so these are diplomatic deals made never to be revealed.in such a move the country feels that it can deal with the sentiments in the south effectively with them having a sense of being not defeated fully and at the same time winning its objective of finishing the war of sri lanka.the power concerned must be calculating that preserving vp is much beneficial to deal with the consequences of finishing the sri lankan war with the military might than to have him dead, especially dealing with local political and emotional unrest.

some sections of sri lanka too feels the same.on one hand the last battle will be won without much damages and with the exit of the boss and the remaining cadres too will crumble like rubble with demoralization and a loss of h9ope.less bleeding and the objectives will be realized.but then how will the public of sri lanka react to this...?

the likes of JVP will make a huge cry and try to gain political mileage out of this.while we would be saving the lives of thousands of soldiers and winning the war with politico diplomatic strategy, still there will be people who would like to condition the people into thinking should the 'facts of the deal' leak out, that its been a betrayal etc....for them it would be an opportunity not to be missed to gain loss political ground stirring up the emotions of the layman....

getting back to our main story the guy who surrendered did so with an understanding of corporation and in exchange will escape trial he was in touch with local and international powerful agencies for safety upon surrendering.he will be dealt with in terms of the premeditate arrangement for the vast ocean and plethora of vital information,a treasure trove he made available to the govt of sri lanka and her armed forces fighting the last battle to rid the country battered by 30 years of terror....

so his arrangement will be honored for realizing our final objectives of the war...

  59. From what I hear, the LTTE, VP in particular, is counting heavily on india to get the SL gov to stop its military operations. In return, VP will call the quits and avoid the humiliation of a military defeat. Part of the deal will also be to surrender himself to the RAW.

The scheduled visit of Shivashankar Menan (or whoever is coming from India on thursday) might lay the foundation for this historic deal.

Even VP knows that he cant do anything now in the battle field to reverse the momentum of the SL Forces. His only hope was to cripple the economy or to take on a VVIP, which the LTTE failed, thanks to our hard working MI.
Have you guys ever heard of a 13 year old LTTE suicide bomber? Yeah, they even tried that, but the MI busted it on time!

    It's coming to an end.

  60. Surprisingly it was Mahen who first reported the news of pottu's arrest in the blog-sphere. The news appears to have been manufactured either by SL intel or the LTTE themselves. Either way pottu is not in anyone's custody, and is still being hunted by SLMI. However, his effectiveness is much diminished due to the high level of preparedness in the south and the lack of a popular support base among the tamils in govt areas.

Strangely, Dutugemunu also relied on a commander named Gathabaya in his final war against Elara. In a weird coincidence of events, then Elara was truly the elegant ruler who was ardently followed by Sinhalese. Some of his commanders were sinhalese as well.

  61. Puffy,

"In return, VP will call the quits and avoid the humiliation of a military defeat. Part of the deal will also be to surrender himself to the RAW."

Anything he does at this point is humiliating to Velu. Nevertheless, I am very curios about the true motive of the Indian visit. Perhaps, they are here not to make deals on behalf of Velu but to demand that he be sent to India for the crime of killing Rajiv Gandhi. If not for anything else, the people of India will be furious to find that India let the terrorist Prabakaran go when he was truly cornered.

  68. Sam Perera;
You are right, the indian offical wont be making any deals on behalf of Velu. But rather a deal on behalf of the millions of pro-LTTE elements out there. Dont forget that the LTTE is not just some village gang. They are global and mean millions to some.

India wont ask us to stop the military operatons and go for peace talks or anything like that. It will look stupid on them. Rather, they will ask us to stop the operations and in return, the LTTE will call it the quits. You know, let the SL Forces capture the land and weapons and let the remaining cadres go home, without anymore blood shed for both parties. And this will end the WAR.

But for this, we will have to let Velu go... Though all of us would like to see Velu captured or killed, there are more powerful figures out there who think otherwise. RAW will deal with Velu very secretively. They might do the vanishing act on him.

But have no fear, Velu will not return to haunt us. It will take another 10 years for him to reorganise. I dont think he will live for that long ;-)

RAW will have to create a new Velu!

  69. Soldiers to get involved in politics. This is a bad joke, right?

    http://www.thebottomline.lk/2009/01/14/index%2047.htm
    http://tinyurl.com/83qbcc

Does the GOSL have a knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory? If this report is to be believed, MR wants ..."enable soldiers who today are safeguarding the integrity and sovereignty of the country, also to take part in politics.

The Minister has said .... in every election in the future, senior officers from the armed forces would be considered for nomination and they would be encouraged to play an active role in the Sri Lankan politics."

There's a good reason why the armed forces should be kept away from politics. They have access to armed force! Can you imagine a situation where different senior officers supports competing parties and use their men and officers and and weapons to promote a particular political party?

The armed forces of this country are a unifying force. If it enters overtly enters the political process, it will be a guaranteed disaster for the country.

I cannot imagine a more insane policy than this. If you look at other countries where the armed forces have overtly entered politics, it almost always results in disaster. Do we want SL to end up like Pakistan? I hope this insane idea will quickly be relegated to the dustbin where it belongs.

  71. Mr Gotabaya!
By all decent means win this election but tie up the likes of Mervin perhaps send him abroad for a while.
We would not like to hear on the 14th of Feb that you have done a peace deal with Vp.Anyone from that outfit that can be considered for any type of compromise or consideration is their sea tiger leader Soosi as he is good as any military leader who seems to be on the wrong side but his only blemish is the usage of suicide cadres that may be against the international conventions. He should be spared with a lot of preconditions where he can’t leave the island for at least 10 years, not to take part in any political activities as this leads to separatist politics which might be influenced by the conniving Diaspora. He should be part of the national development where he must allow a sizeable proportion of the other ethnic groups to be settled in those areas thus preventing any future attempts to create separatist or even nationalist enclave.

We must try the Singaporean example of ethnic integration in jobs, housing and education and failing to do this will let in the wrath of Tamil Nadhu politics and the unnecessary interference of the fundraising Diaspora.
There should not be a rush to develop the conflict areas as it would reward the wrong doers as well. People of those areas are as guilty as the terrorists and they will have to wait their turn until the areas in the south that has been neglected by the war that is imposed on the taxpayers in the South. After all these folks in these terrorist areas are part and parcel of the terrorist structure that had brought so much pain and suffering to people in the island and these people are as good or bad as the terrorist that have been supporting Hamas in Gaza.

  75. Small note on the Sirasa and Lasantha attacks. From the looks of it, both seem to be well planned and well cordinated attacks. And there are only 2 groups that are capable of carrying out such attacks;
    1. Security Forces
    2. Underworld

As most have already discussed, the Security Forces and the GoSL has nothing to achieve from such an attack. We already had the Killinochchi victory under us and all the people (except for the UNP and some pro-LTTE elements) were behind the Forces and the government.

So what I strongly beleive is that this was the work of some underworld gang. And the contract would have surely been given by some pro-LTTE person or party that wanted to discredit the government and get the attention of the international community which was turned to the middle east crisis back to SL...

Whatever master plan was behind the Sirasa attack, it seems that it is going to backfire on them. And make no mistake, this time the authorities will build a solid case against Sirasa and bring them down hard. I see a total ban on Sirasa, something like shutting down the channel for good.

Btw, did anyone listen to Gota? That was a damn good interview and surely would have made the pro-LTTE people shit in their pants.

And yes, he openly branded Sirasa as pro-LTTE and issued a strong warning. I guess tomorrow we will see Sirasa airing that part and trying to build a case against Gota like they did before...

Sirasa played a deadly game and they played for the wrong side. They have to be brought down. May be we can start on it once our main objective of defeating the LTTE is achieved.

  78. Cornering the Tigers to a narrow stretch has irts advantages and disadvantages. The navy could easily deny sea access to the tigers and as a result the focus is likely to concentrate in that area.

That could at the same time provide a blind spot opportunity to the LTTE. They could land a consignment of arms and ammo on a southern point and have a group of sleeper agents go active with them in areas at unexpected times.

Murphy's Law - the possibilities are endless on both sides, so the SLDF needs to stay wide awake to all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Return of the pink panther - LTTE to intensify attacks overseas.

This is going to be a nice epilogue to the desease. When the attacks are intensified, it is going to requre the open participation of overseas diaspora. When words fail, as they will, terrorism will rule again, afterall these guys aren't used to dissent or someone treating them with disdain. That will bring them directly into conflict with the international intelligence agencies and police action.

The LTTE may have made tamils of Sri lanka the pariahs of the world. Now they will make those who hid their faces and financed it all come out into the open and face the music.

    Let's move onto Chapter TWO...

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sam

The Indians have a couple of objectives.

They want to make sure that they are 'the boss' in our pond, and SL doesn't become a pawn of China or Pak. The Only way they can do that today is to open the purse strings and get involved in development activity. By commiting to rehab work in the North, they can also silence the TN nattami circus.

They also need face saving where the outside world is concerned. For the benefit of the world powers, they'll need to show that they are in charge here, and the victory somehow had their support as a basis. Perhaps it did, but doesn't really matter. The greatr the number of happy people, the better the world.

SL's stability is also a genuine concern for India. They need a presence here so that any future adventures by Pakistan (ex: islamic militancy in SL) can be effectively countered, and avoid a repeat of the Mumbai fiasco originating from SL.

They also want Velu's skull, to boost their sagging military morale.

It's now become common for embedded reporters to fly on combat missions with MI-24 crews. You can see in above video the actual mission briefing, loading of armaments, transition to target zone, visual identification of the target (two artillery pieces), engagement of the target, and visual confirmation of the target destruction. Very cool indeed. It's fun to hear the gunner asking permission to engage the target.
