Non Sinhala Heroes Of “The Sinhala Army”

Back in the days of the war, there was a popular saying in the south; සිංහලයාට සති දෙකකින් සියල්ල අමතකය (Sinhalese tend to forget in two weeks). While we do not agree with this sentiment 100%, we as a nation do have a knack for forgetting the most important lessons taught to us by history. Velupille Prabhakaran used this to his gain, and judging by the way things are going, a common enemy will soon be able to spot and exploit this weakness in most Sri Lankans.

If you have listened to speeches or read blogs post, Facebook pages or forums maintained by so called patriots, you would have no doubt come across the following logic: “Sinhalese saved this country, therefore this country must be Sinhalese only”. The majority of soldiers in the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) were Sinhalese. Majority of the casualties in the war were Sinhalese soldiers. This is natural as it’s proportional to the total population of Sri Lanka, of which the majority are Sinhalese. However, that is not to say other races did not have a hand in defending Sri Lanka from oppressors. A small reminder to those that have forgotten :

Captain Shahul Hameed Nilam, Commanding Officer, Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) – LRRP, also known as “The Mahasohon Brigade” was a deep penetration unit of SLA that operated behind enemy lines. The unit was classified and the SLA never officially acknowledged its existence. Under the leadership of Captain Nilam, it was responsible for the elimination of several high profile LTTE military leaders including the then air wing lead Colonel Shankar and deputy sea tiger commander Gangai Amaran. LRRP operations were a major factor in SLA victories throughout the Eelam wars as not only did they assassinate top leadership but their surprise attacks miles inside rebel held territory severely degraded the morale of LTTEs’ regular formations as well. Captain S. H. Nilam was the CO of LRRP back when the Millennium City raid happened. Due to classified information being revealed in the raid, Captain Nilam and his family were sent to Indonesia due to threats posed to his life by LTTE intelligence unit. Based in Indonesia, he worked to disrupt LTTE arms smuggling operations under the guidance of Major General Janaka Perera. Captain Nilam and his family once again disappeared following the removal of Janaka Perera as the Sri Lankan ambassador to Indonesia. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

Colonel Tuan Nizam Muthaliff, Commanding Officer, Military Intelligence Corps – Col. Muthaliff served under captain Nilam and was technically the deputy commander of the LRRP. He was a mastermind behind many successful DPU operations including several ops in the eastern province. He was also a major influence in rallying Tamil support for SLA’s cause and had built a strong intelligence network backed by paramilitaries of all races and religions. It was through this network the MIC received plenty of vital information which aided the SLA especially in the eastern theatre of battle. Col Muthaliff was hunted by LTTE intelligence units for three years after the millennium city leak and was assassinated by gunmen on May 2005.

Wing Commander T.D.S. Silvapulle, Sri Lanka Air Force – Wing Command Sivapulle was a SLAF Mi-24 gunship pilot attached to the 9th attack helicopter squadron. He is best known for his heroic attempts engaging a sea tiger flotilla while knowing his chopper could get shot out of the air any moment. Several sea tiger boats were reinforcing an attack on SLA forward defence line south east of Elephant Pass and SLAF had dispatched two Mi-24 ‘Hind’ gunships to assist the army (This was back in 1999 when the tigers were armed with surface to air missiles). Instead of backing out, Wing Commander Silvapulle instructed the other gunship to disengage and unleashed his Mi-24 on sea tigers. LTTE could not withstand the attack and the boats were soon retreating from the area. Unfortunately, Wing Commander Silvapulles’ Mi-24 was hit by what is believed to be a surface to air missile fired from one of the LTTE boats - it crashed into the Kilali lagoon, killing its pilot, co-pilot and two gunners on board.

Colonel A.F Lafir, Commanding Officer, 1st Special Forces Regiment – Colonel Fazly Lafir was a key figure behind the evolution of SLA Special Forces, which played a key role until the very last minutes of the Eelam war. SF evolved from a small combat tracker team formed in 1985 and had grown into a fully fledged battle formation with 4 regiments, several LRRP teams and an urban fighting squadron by 2012. It achieved this feat through the sacrifices made by founding officers such as A.F. Lafir. Colonel Lafir is best known for his heroics in Operation Thrividha Pahara, where he and 275 other special forces units from 1SF volunteered to try and secure a beachhead near SLA’s Mullathivu base which was about to be overrun by an LTTE force numbering 4000. In the first step of the mission, Colonel Lafir and 137 other SF units helidropped amidst heavy enemy fire and continued fighting their way inside LTTE held area. Col Lafir continued leading the attack through the night even after receiving multiple gunshot wounds from small arms fire. He was KIA on 19th July 1996 after being hit by an LTTE mortar. For his heroic actions in the mission Col. Lafir was awarded the Parama Weera Vibhushana medal, the highest award given for gallantry in Sri Lanka Army.

Inspector N.M. Nilabdeen, Sri Lanka Police – Inspector Nilabdeen is probably the best counter terrorism officer Sri Lanka has ever seen. A veteran at extracting intelligence and counter intelligence tactics, he arrested numerous LTTE operatives including black tigers and recovered large quantities of weapons and ammunition the LTTE had smuggled into Colombo. His actions without a doubt saved hundreds of innocent civilian lives and prevented millions of rupees worth of property damage. Inspector Nilabdeen had to leave the country due to threats to his life from LTTE intelligence units. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

These are not the only non Sinhala heroes that made sacrifices to save this country. This is just a small preview of a long list of names that should include the likes of Lakshman Kadiragamar, Brigadier A.W. Thambiraja and hundreds of nameless and faceless Tamil and Muslim informants that supplied critical information to the SLA risking their lives in the process.

The objective of this article was not to glorify or undermine a particular race or religion. This is just a reminder to racist organizations, blogs and social media pages that are trying to promote the flawed theory “Sinhalese saved this country, therefore this country must be Sinhalese only”. Soldiers of all races and religions gave their lives to defend Sri Lanka from oppressors. SLA did not care about the race or religion of its soldiers – why should you? What won us the war was not the army of a single race, it was the army of Sri Lanka.

While you keep up the infighting, a common enemy regroups in Tamil Nadu. Keep this in mind – “United as one, divided by zero”.

  4. Yes, but the non-muslim ration in SL forces are really low compared to their population ratio. See you just found 5 of them. If they are really patriotic, then this ration should be much more higher than this.
And what about the number of muslims & sinhalese who fought on behalf of LTTE? And non-tamil politicians who wowed to fight for eelam cause? and non-sinhalese politicians who signed agreeements with Prabakeran?
And Adela Balasinghem - who had no relation to SL and fought for eelam cause?
And non-tamils who still supports the eelam cause - like Channel4 ppl? Why them? why why why????

Can you please explain these complex thing as well??? please I want to know why???

    1. "non-muslim ration in SL forces are really low compared to their population ratio. See you just found 5 of them."

If you read the article actually there are only 4 Muslim names listed. Wing Commander Tyronne Sivapulle was not a Muslim. Not that it matters anyway.
And we assume you didn't miss this part:
"These are not the only non Sinhala heroes that made sacrifices to save this country. If you try to measure the level of patriotism of a particular race purely with statistics, you are going about it the wrong way.

As for the rest of your questions, every race has their share of traitors. There are no treacherous races or selfish races. But there are treacherous and selfish humans in every race.

  6. Only such a baseless and pathetic blog poster such as defencenet would glorify traitors....these informants that helped in the genocide against the thamil eelam nation were rats that hid in their holes....the time is now for the perpetrators of the genocide to be brought to justice one way or another.

  8. Defencenet, the past is never forgotten or gotten over when there was so much hatred directed towards one....the only way to sooth the wounds are for justice to be served, in time even the sinhala public will come to a realization what kind of tyrants run sri lanka and how much brutality they unleashed on civilians in the North and East....this justice will come in one way or another, if the IC doesn't step up and persecute the war criminals in high positions there is another form of justice that will emerge....the roots of this can already be seen in the student protests in Jaffna and Thamil Nadu....the eelam war was not won by the armed forces, it only kept drew the attention towards the brutality of the SL Regime.

    1. The Eelam war was won back in 2009 and we have since moved on. Anyone who says otherwise is clearly hallucinating. Sinhalese and Tamils live in peace in Sri Lanka and whoever is organizing protests in Tamil Nadu seems to have a dislike for peace.Anyway Tamil Nadu can protest all it wants, but rest assured Sri Lanka won't be separated again.

  9. For those who think tamils are living in peace in sri lanka u are living in a dream world and are just as guilty as ur tyrant leaders running the country not to mention arrogant and uneducated......defencenet please dont tell me ur source still is defence.lk......i am in direct contact with students from.jaffna and trust.me they are not living in peace, they are continuously harassed by the sla where they are detained on suspicion without any evidence, not allowed to protest peacefully, and white van abductions are still rampant so unless you got there and speak to ppl other than the sla dont publish bullshit....as well the war has not been won by the rajapkse regime it has just begun a new phase on an international diplomatic level, the method has changed according to the times but the goal never will......but if u.look at history the violent cycle was started after years of peaceful protests beimg brutally crushed and this new phase will lead to worse violence this time around if diplomacy fails and this time it wont just be 2 million tamils to deal with it will be 70million tamils to deal with.......if you guys are so sure that tamils are living in peace then y are u so afraid.to have a reerendum in the north and east and let the ppl speak

    1. "i am in direct contact with students from.jaffna"

So this means you are not even in Sri Lanka? First of all come down to Sri Lanka and see that the real situation is different that what your politicians or a random eelamist contact would have you believe. Otherwise you will be one of those ignorant assclowns in Tamil Nadu who eventually self immolate for no reason.

"it wont just be 2 million tamils to deal with it will be 70million tamils to deal with"

Even the last time, we never had a problem with 2 million Tamils. We had a problem with around 20000 LTTE fighters and the problem is now solved. You can try that bullshit once again, but the result would be more or less the same. Anyone who takes up arms to split Sri Lanka no matter where they come from or what their race or ethnicity is, will be dealt with by the Sri Lankan Army.

  10. For your information i have come back to jaffna which is my birthplace many times and it is disgraceful to see it's current state.....i have personally witnessed the intrusion, human rights abuses and lands of people being taken over by the army for their purpose so dont try and tell me about my birthplace modaya.....believe me all your govmnt has done is solidify the call for a separate eelam and unify tamils around the world for this cause.....we may have our differences between us but we have one common goal and thats to break the backbone of the culprits of the genocide on eezham tamils....u may think the war is over but it only shows how naive you are and all these political diplomacy taking place now is setting the stage for justice to be served

It is quite obvious u haven't gone to either jaffna or tamil nadu so dont come on this blog and act like u know anything thats going on....typical of a modaya u are so self obsessed that you actually have no connection to reality

    1. Looks like this Thamilian Brother did not like or maybe bit jealous to see his fellow bro's and sisters are enjoying the freedom especially in the North. People like you who aided 30 + years of war in SL. People like you who funded money to arm and kill your own race. You have and still under the illusion that by spreading FALSE propaganda about his race would aid your cause to separation. Unfortunately to you it would not work as long as there are good tamils still live in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is for all races but not for warmongering idiot like YOU

    2. Don,

I wonder which inbreed of a mother you came....a mix of ur portugese forefathers mixed with prostituting araq drinkers, only such a fool would think what i'm saying is propaganda....if you open your eyes a bit and take ur nose out of ur ass maybe u will see the plight of civilians in vanni after the war....to u modayas who are blinded by ur govt take a trip to the vanni and look for urselves if you dont believe my "propaganda".....in terms of war, that is not a threat it is a sad reality that will occur if this govt goes down this path of destruction and suppression, we tamils are not war mongers, we have tried peaceful methods since independence only to be met with brute force by government sponsored groups and it is at this point that the ltte formed. Now we are seeing the same cycle repeat itself and there is a limit to people's patience.

  12. DN,

Good to see you back. We at EFT wholly disagree with BBS methods, stance, posturing and random acts of racism, ethno-religious provocation et al. However, the spread of Salafism and the perceived imposition of Wahabi/Salafist values originating from the East must be stopped. It is no different from the monoethnic, tribal and racist cult of VP that was wiped out in May 2009. This maybe an over generalisation but the Salafist are only patriotic towards Saudi Arabian. Some of these Salafists were even approving of the execution of Rizana Nafeek whereas every other race/religion condemned it in the strongest possible terms. The Salafist are even attactking Muslims of other persuasion namely the Sufis/Shias. Something must be done, otherwise we will soon be fighting Al Qaeda/LeT on our shores, this is a threat to all communities.

    For the record, EFT membership consists of;

    Two Sinhala Catholics
    Two Sinhala Buddhists
    A Sinhala Anglican?
A scientologist of dubious ethnic origin

  13. The day before the government announced the death of V Prabakaran and victory, I wrote the following, at http://srilankan-news.blogspot.com/2009/05/end-of-war-beginning-of-another-journey.html which has significance of a religious magnitude today;

"....This is exactly why it becomes very important that the President, other prominant statesmen, opposition leaders, tamil politicians such as Devananda and Ananda Sangaree etc address the nation, not to give victory speeches, but to deliver cold sober 'Let's talk of where we go from here as a single nation' talks. There must not be any declarations which further alienate the tamil citizens of Sri Lanka, but only verbal attempts and actions that are aimed at healing the wounds. This is not a victory of one community over another, but the defeat of a tribal, racist terrorism no Sri Lankan will ever want to live with. However, all Sri Lankans must necessarilly be aware of how our tamil neighbors may be feeling deep in their hearts. Reaching out to the tamils among us and speaking openly of understanding those feelings and apprehensions will open an opportunity for free and honest dialogue which can lead to greater understanding of not our differences, but how common our future aspirations can be.

The next goal before our nation will be to find the common grounds on which all of our people can feel a sense of belonging, and pride of ownership. Finding the answers will not be an easy task, but as Sri Lankans have already proven that we are capable of accomplishing the impossible when we really want to. The journey may not be easy, but it will be one which rewards everyone on all sides, unlike the end of a war in which there is always the defeated and the dead.

The Buddhist clergy, long associated with sinhala nationalism also have a unique opportunity to change that public perspective and become pillars of a unifying force that embraces tamils and other minorities for their own cultural values. It is imperative that the leading buddhist monks and figureheads of other faiths all deliver a message of hope for a unified future in which the military aspects of our past are down played.

Here's an important message for some of you younger hot heads; Sacrifices made by our soldiers were for the purpose of unifying our nation and restoring dignity as a single nation which includes everybody. We just militarily beat the opposing view. At this critical time, we will remember the sacrifices our soldiers made, but we will not talk of them and their actions in ways that will defeat the purpose for which they died...."

  14. Thamilan,

For many years now since the war, the only volunteers who have helped the destitute Tamils have been Sinhalese. I have been all over the N?E with groups of young Sinhala and Muslim doctors and others who have given generously of their time and effort to help the innocent civillians who are trying to rebuild their lives. We could never get a single Tamil doctor to help. Your kind are a disgrace to man kind. You only growl, and prove your animalistic nature. We are not afraid. We've pulled your teeth before. Now you are toothless, tiger. Bend over and kiss your ass good bye.
