Situation as of 08.03.2009

There is no truth to the rumors that are floating around which suggest the LTTE has pushed the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) back to Vishwamadu junction. Some pro LTTE media and gossip sites also reported that the LTTE had managed to overrun the Puthukuirippu junction. These reports are largely exaggerated.

Several small LTTE attack teams however have managed to infiltrate into SLA held territory and have launched several hit and run attacks. It is these isolated attacks that the pro LTTE media exaggerate with attractive phrases like overrun’ ‘breached’, ‘pushed back’, etc. The truth is that the LTTE has not been able to breach any of SLA’s forward defence lines and they are still boxed into an area of around 40sq.km.

Units from SLA’s 55, 57 and 58 divisions are positioned/advancing as below:

Division Location
55 South of Challai
57 North, North East and East of Vishwamadu
58 North, North East and East of PTK

  1. Before anyone makes smartass comments:

Rest of the divisions were not included because their positions are self explanatory on the defence map. Don't assume they were 'wiped out'.

North, North East and East of Vishwamadu does not mean Vishwamadu junction.

  3. Thank you DN for the clarifications.

Given the length of FDL very short compared to several month before how do SLA miss terrorists infilterators?

  6. hi defencenet
hope this would not be termed a smartass question.. LTTE could have infiltrated our defenses ! that is fine as that sort of things could have happened and will happen....theoretically as you mentioned these teams could only do a "hit and Run " type of attack unless otherwise they were on a "specific" suicide mission ....

but then how come defense.lk says fighting was going on from 6.30 Am to 4.30 Pm ?? that does not sound like a hit and run !!

    just concerned !!
pls tell if PTK junc has fallen to the enemy or not just a simple YES or NO or Not anymore would be fine

    thanks

  7. defencenet you are complete fing liar.

your sla is dieng at a number of 50/60 a day.....

as frackster points out how come a hit and run lasts for 10 hours you modaya ?

  8. Interesting that all the recent LTTE attacks have failed so miserably and with so high casualties. One could suspect that one or several highly placed LTTE leaders find that cyanide capsule is more appropriate for the low level cadres than themselves and have contacted military intelligence. If the army was waiting in ambush then this would explain so high casualties for the LTTE's best cadres.

Why should the army stop their forward operations? Many reserve troops that can take care of some infiltrators while continuing the offensive all day long.

  11. Good show defence forces. Terrorists will be terrorists as last night’s attack in Northern Ireland shows as they are never used to peace or politics. There only one way to deal with them….

  13. Infinity,
no mate the article is on the 57th ..and as far as we are told the 57th is a reserve force therefore they can not be a forward operation....

BUT what they meant could be the search and destroy operation that may have taken that much long ....
just want to clarify ..anyhow...what is happening is vishwamdu is manageable i suppose...

what i am more interested is the situ in PTK just want a straight up yes or no answer from DN or DW !!!

we should also be mindful of infiltrations in to the south such as yala, just imagine if LTTE manage to relocate 1/2 of thier fighting force to some other part of the island ..would prolong this war( on a military term i guess they wont do that as long as they can hold on to the civilians...i stress on the point as long as )

  18. There was an interesting map in the Nation yesterday:

    http://www.nation.lk/2009/03/08/militarym.htm

The road from Pudukudyiruppu to Palamattalan looks important for the LTTE. When the army captures it they can bring food supplies right up to the civilians in the no fire zone without passing the frontline. If the LTTE then refuses to accept such convoys then there is no escaping their responsibility for any shortages. Also, at this point some civilians may be able to reach more easily reach the cleared areas by crossing the lagoon.

"In another intercepted Tiger radio communication, LTTE military leader Lawrence was heard shouting at his juniors in abusive language, ordering them to go after civilians fleeing by sea and kill them."

Amazing that the diaspora looks up to such men.

  19. Next 2-3 days should wrap things up, if the news here is correct.

In other news, lankaEnews has published a complete list of depositors' names from the Ceylinco scandal. Isn't such information priviledged and held confidential in SL any longer?

Interstingly priests of all creeds appear to be the real fat cats who got screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Frackster

    The answer is 'neither'.

No territory has been gained by the LTTE though they are very active, trying to get behind SLA lines, according to a SL source.

At the same time, the SLA forward domination elements are moving in with small teams. But the major SLA force also has not moved forward more than 500yds in the last few days, it appears.

This is attritional warfare. We can afford to take casualties, since we have plenty of replenishments both in men, materials and med facilities for the walking wounded. The LTTE cannot.

  24. Looks like the US wants a piece of the action not just to bail out some smelly civillians, but to get an insider's look at the spoils of war, the information that will lead to identifying domestic threats, persons who need watching etc.

That's good thinking, as the LTTE's demise and/or potential transformation into a different type of organization can spell danger to a lot of western nations. This is where knowledge and data on people will be invaluable and the Americans now know that there's nothing better than getting it first hand.

In the US we call it 'debriefing'. As you may have heard it, brotha Omama doesn't believe in 'interrogation'.

  28. Jayalalitha's Fast

Jayalalitha brought forward her fast by one day, leaving us, the bewildered, to guess the exact cause.

Her mestrual cycle may, perhaps, be the cause, if she hasn't reached her menopause yet or she has undergone HRT - Hormone Replacement Therapy - to rekindle her lesbian inclinations.

The Old Fox, Karunanidhi, with whom she had slept in her early days of the movie career, is wathching the new development, with caution behind his dark glasses. More fireworks on the way, folks.

Jayalalitha, the lover of MGR - who offered Prabha a colossal amount of money to buy weapons - is a phenomenon in her own right. Like all Tamil Nadu politicians, she doesn't have any coherent political principles or strategy, because most of them just play emotive politics to the audiences of ignorants and hot heads.

Tamil men, women and children who struggle to find a little place to lie down and then beg pedestrians of food near Chennai Railway Station, are puzzled the caring offered to their brethren across the Palk Straits while completely ignoring their plight, which has been the same for decades.Tamil Nadu politicians prove that sentiments can have duplicates - one for locals and the other for neighboures.

Jayalalitha's calculated move certainly put the Old Fox in a difficult position. Both doing the same is unthinkable; they never see eye to eye now. The days they did so are long gone - behind movie studios!

Karunanidhi can kick start a wave of protests; but stakes are high. The economic troubles are knocking on his door at last and enough damage is already done by range of folks - from lawyers to guys who indulge in self-immolation.

I imagine Jayalalitha sitting in the lotus postion, while keeping the centre of gravity, the place where older males found their destruction - her own lotus - in a very secure position during today's fast. She marks this dangerous place by keeping her palms over it, implying its exact position.

Her audience may consist of weeping women who throw out their hair in despair. This dance by women with gaps in their gums, remind me of the dances performed by those who have been possesed by demons. So, the demonstrations of this kind show the true mettle of politicians of Jayalalitha's calibre. They are demonic spirit distributors.

I am sure her own TV channel - Jaya TV - is busy in broadcasting the episode.

The end of this drama is a foregone conclusion: someone from the audience will make an appeal to her to stop the fast; she reluctantly agrees; then comes the glass of lemon juice and the fast is over on a very sour note, indeed.

We know Jayalalitha can both fast and fart in the same breath, when the elections are around the corner.

The difference between the two is the extra burden that it adds to the unbearable stench of cosmopolitan cities of Tamil Nadu.

Right now the LTTE head count must be down to abt 200 at most.

  35. TropicalStorm,

As Karuna also has commented, before Karuna's spilt LTTE had about 10,000 cadres. Karuna had provided 6000 and most of them were hard-core cadres.

When Karuna split, 4000 cadres went with him. Another 1000 were killed by LTTE through deception. A local Christian Father has motivated 1000 cadres from East to surrender to LTTE saying that they would be spared. However, as soon as they surrendered, they massacred the 1000. Another 1000 was with Ramesh etc and absorbed into LTTE full-time. Effectively, LTTE ended-up with roughly 5000 carders.

However, during the ceasefire period and just at the start of this round of fighting, LTTE has managed to recruit another 2000 - 3000.

So, we should expect to have a floating count of 7,000 - 8,000 with LTTE in its peak time in this latest fighting.

Since Mavil Aru, as I understand, we have harvested about 6000 -7000. As there is always replenishments (new inexperienced recruits) to send to the fronts, perhaps LTTE still have about 1000 -1500 hardcore cadres and another same number of cannon fodder (can we say softcore?).

My guestimate is 1000 hardcore and another 1000 softcore is still left until last week.
