An explosion was reported in a Muslim religious ceremony in Godapitiya in Matara area. The explosion occurred when a Liberation Tigers suicide bomber detonated inside a mosque attended by a large number of civilians.
Several people have been injured in the blast. According to our sources, government minister Mahinda Wijesekara who was attending the event is also among the injured.

A Sinhalese 75 year old mother speaking to TNS reporter in a village in the South of Sri Lanka said, his son joined the Sri Lankan Army 3 months ago and he is missing in action in the Vanni war front for past many weeks, and she believe her son is still alive.
"My heart is saying he's still alive," said the mother of four.
For every week he's been missing, she has donated a cow to her temple; donate cooking stuff to temple for breakfast and lunch for disabled children.
She hopes her good deeds will bring him home. "I pray every morning and every night," she said. "I don't do anything to hurt others. I believe he will come home."
Another lady from the same village who spoke with TNS reporter said that her son was killed on February 7th in Mulaitivu area.
"I lost my son because of this senseless war with LTTE. One soldier who came to his funeral promised me to visit us often. But after a week he lost his leg. We do not know what to do, except pray for them," she said.
Tens of thousands of Sri Lankan soldiers from mostly poverty-stricken rural youth from Southern Sri Lanka joined the forces due to mostly lack of jobs in other sectors in the country. They were sent to fight with the LTTE in tens of thousands but thousands of them have been killed many thousands of the soldiers badly wounded on the front lines in the Vanni area despite the Sri Lanka claiming decisive victory over the LTTE nearing.
The Current President Mahinda Rajapakse, his brother, Defence Secretary hardliner, Gotabaya Rajapakse and hardliner and Army Commander Sarath Fonseke have sought to hide the civilian casualties in the Vanni area, it has also covered up the soldiers' death toll by eliminating independent journalist in the country, a political observer on Colombo told TNS.
Government minister was on the record saying that over 3000 Sri Lankan SF troopers were killed from October 2008 to December 2008. But, the bloody phases of the war is continuing in the Mulaitivu since January 2009, where government continue to claim the war is ending in days while the casualties among the SF forces are mounting at unprecedented level, according to some sources at the rate of 100s per day.
The unexceptionally high casualty among the SF troopers shows the Sri Lankan government's utter disregard for human life in the country. While the government and its pro media in the South of Sri Lanka routinely describes the dead soldiers as "war heroes," their parents, wives, daughters, sons and loved ones are suffering deeply as they are loosing their bread winners. Theses people strongly believe that their government is hiding the truth from them about the real casualties among the SF troopers in the war in Mulaitivu.

'If there is any genocide in Sri Lanka it is by the LTTE' says Lord Naseby

Lord Naseby, Conservative Peer and Chair of All Party Parliamentary Group on Sri Lanka said on Wednesday(March 11), if there is any genocide in Sri Lanka it is by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who hold civilian Tamils by force as a human shield in the war.
"This talk about genocide is rubbish. The only people who are causing genocide are the LTTE who are holding the civilians as a human shield," he said when a LTTE propagandist in the audience charged the Sri Lanka government of genocide. Lord Naseby was referring to the Tamil civilians who are being held against their will as a human shield in the current war by the LTTE and who are being shot at by the LTTE when they attempt to escape on foot and by boat.
The British House of Lords member made this public statement, at a Forum discussion recorded in front of an audience , mostly consisting of British Tamil Forum members , at a studio in the Media House in Central London and broadcast by Press TV of Iran. A sympathetic labour member of Parliament to the Tamil movement in London, Jeremy Corbyn was the moderator of the show.
Labour Party Member of European Parliament Robert Evans, Suren Surendiran a spokesman of the LTTE front organization, the British Tamil Forum and Douglas Wickramaratne , President of the Sinhala Association of London were the other members of the discussion panel.
Lord Naseby further said, during the course of the discussion, international pressure should be brought on the LTTE to release all those civilians. He said no international pressure is necessary, as Robert Evans suggested, to declare a ceasefire , by the government. He said the Sri Lanka government is an elected government and it is the LTTE who must down its arms and surrender to bring the military conflict to an end.
The show had an ominous start when British Tamil Forum's Suren Suthanthiran, said that a main grievance of the Tamils is that Sinhalese being the only official language . One of the Sri Lankan members of the audience pointed out Suren Surenthiran was making factually incorrect statements. He said in Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese Language and Tamil language with English are being used as official languages. Immediately responding Lord Naseby said the cry about Sinhalese language is very much dated as both Sinhalese and Tamil are used as official languages. Then Suren Suthanthiran said he was speaking about 1956.

The British Tamil Forum member Suren Suthanthiran faced an embarrassing situation when an English woman in the audience questioned about Child soldiers by the LTTE. The British Tamil Forum spokesman, in reply, kept on repeating "to whichever religion one belongs to it is wrong for one to kill another person" unskilfully evading the question. When the embarrassed moderator of the show Jeremy Corbyn, whose sympathies have been with the LTTE in the past, asked him for a specific reply for a straight question he was coming out with the same repetition turning the show into a comic show, participants commented. When a pro-LTTE woman from the audience said why question about child soldiers when so many thousands of Tamil children have been killed the reply was broadcast. She was not substantiating the statement.
It was very significant that the labour party MEP , Robert Evans was suggesting a Kosovo- Montenegro like solution for Sri Lanka at a brief moment of the discussion. But the pro-LTTE MP who has been repeating LTTE slogans in the past did not say how the LTTE is going to form a state from a 50 square kilometre size area from which they fight now nor did anybody asked him that question. Its population , kept under the threat of gun, are constantly running away from the area at the risk of life, according to reports.
But Lord Naseby immediately reacted to Robert Evans by telling that the vast majority of Tamils living in Sri Lanka do not want a two state solution. And he said when the British were seeking a solution for Northern Ireland they did not consider a two state solution.
The British Tamil Forum spokesman said they wanted a two state solution for Sri Lanka's problem.
Sinhala Association President Douglas Wickramaratne said that it is ridiculous people talk about a Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka since 60 percent of the Tamils live outside the Northern and Eastern provinces of the country. He said over two thousand years, Sri Lanka has been one unitary country governed under one king. He further said since1985 Sri Lanka has been negotiating with the Tamil Tigers. He said during this time the LTTE have used every ceasefire to rearm themselves and prolong the war . Wickramaratne said a duely elected government under a democratic system has every right to suppress terrorism hurting the people. A paediatrician who did not announce her name and spoke from the audience said she has had personal experience of dealing with the parents of child soldiers who have left Northern and Eastern provinces just because they feared that their children would be kidnapped by the LTTE. She said children are being kidnapped for war by the LTTE as UNESCO reports very clearly show.
More than 50 Sri Lankans who expressed that they wanted to participate in the discussions by email did not even had the courtesy of receiving a reply. An organizer at the studio said there had been too many emails to be replied to. But all prominent British Tamil Forum members were there to be seated and allowed to ask their propagandist type questions. Ultimately, they did not make any results since neither the questions nor their representative's replies failed to make any impressions.

ReplyDeleteFerociously heavy battles ensued between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan Security Forces (SF) in many areas in Vanni including Chalai and Thevipuram area.
A group of troopers from the 53 division, special force troopers entered in the LTTE controlled Puthukudiyirupu area has been encircled by the defending LTTE fighters and they were completely cutoff from the main 53 Division suffered close to one hundred SF troopers.
Meanwhile, SF troopers fired heavy volume of artillery shells towards the civilian 'safe zone' and tried to move close the zone.
Heavy fighting also reported in Visuvamadu area, where LTTE fighters infiltrated into the area controlled by the 57 division behind the 58 division and reports indicates mounting casualties among the SF troopers in the area too.
Past few weeks, the sources in Vanni said, LTTE counter attacked the Sri Lankan Security forces in many fronts and killed large numbers of SF troopers and while inflicted injuries to unprecedented level of SF troopers, and fighting continue to rage between LTTE and SF, sources added.

Civilian plight and Pillai's misplaced Sentiments

The chief of human rights / wrongs at the UN has warned about the war crimes, but deliberately avoided to identify the real culprits.
She has been alarmed not by facts, but by a large number of emails. This is indeed a revelation!
We see car stickers coming up in various shapes and forms in Europe asking to stop genocide. Whether the Europeans care about these things is another matter. The lukewarm reaction shows that the Europeans are tired of these conflicts that evryone loves to splash out in their streets. They show sentimental fatigue after hearing so many stories of this kind for years. When they realize terrorist try to blow them up at the first available opportunity, they don't have even crocodile tears to shed any more.
So, we know who had been sending such a large number of emails to Pillai. It is Tigers and their sympathaisers. If she goes by them and makes a policy decision, her decision making is based on sentiments and not substance.
This is counter-productive and her compettitors for the post may grab the opportunity to tarnish what is left of her image for being racially-biased. Being a Tamil herself, she should have exercised caution before jumping to conclusions.
The government led by MR deserves the credit for wiping the brutes out from the earth.
However, its handling of the propaganda front is a failure. That is why we have to go through nail-biting episodes like this during this conflict. Relying on upleasant, incompetant diplomats to handle diplomatic front is the root cause of the problem. There are plenty of competant folks who can deliver a good service on this front, but are not brought to the fore.
The only people who can talk in a sensible manner are Dr Kohona, Dr Dayan Jayatillake and to some extent Bogollagama. The rest are boring speakers and can never get a message across to a gloabal audience. Some may heroes to a local Sinhala-speaking audience; but they are useless for a global audience.
If the government has been assured by the big powers that they will deal with the war crime issue, that is one thing. If not, they are going to spoil the party after scoring such a wonderful victory by their sheer carelessness on handling the global media.
No one listens to lengthy statesments by our diplomats defending the operations. What do the tricks are short impressive sound bites that catch the attention.
George Bush's axis of evil speech still resonates with people althouth he got the whole thing wrong.
The army is right to speed up the operations. It is very unfortunate the death of Tamil civilians due to the ruthlessness of the brutes. It is heart-breaking the scenario of little kids in the middle of gun fights. Everyone want this to be over - and over soon. We have more caring feelings than Pillay has, because they are our own citizens, after all.
