SLA starts recruitments for Mechanized Infantry Division and Air Defence Force

Sri Lanka Army has started recruiting personnel for two newly formed special infantry formations. Recruitments will be open from today for Mechanized Infantry Division (MID- Sinhalese: Yanthrika Pabala Regimenthuwa) and Air Defence Force (ADF- Sinhalese: Sangramika Guwan Bala Senawa).

Both MID and ADF are newly formed special infantry formations with MID specializing in mechanized warfare while ADF acts as an Air Force's special fighting formation specializing in Air and Ground combat. ADF will be SLAF's second special infantry formation next to the 'Regiment Special Forces (RSF)'.

  1. Interesting reading the quote from Donald Perera's 2005 report that was published in todays Daily News.

"Whilst appreciating the assistance offered by a Government of a friendly nation to establish an Air Defence System for Sri Lanka it is strongly warned that National Air Defence Plan for Sri Lanka should not be compromised due to any external influence or pressures."

No guesses as to who the "friendly nation" is. And the article mentioning that

"...a 3-D radar system is a must since it enables them to intercept the exact location, from which the aircraft had taken off, the speed of the aircraft and the altitude."

appears to back the fact that we'll have being a lot better off going for the Chinese radar than being bullied into getting the Indian one.

  2. Damn these indians... been a pain in the butt ever since successive governments have started active campaigns to wipe out the LTTE. They will regret this when the LTTE turns back and bites the hand that is feeding them... ;-)

So how late is it for us to install this 3D radar system now?

Anyway, I'm pretty confident that our guys are doing all they can to put an end to this menace... so lets give them some time and be patient!

  3. I think its high time the Air force relocates their Kantunayake base to somewhere else. The economic repercussions of these attacks and false alarms will be far greater that building a new base for Air force in Weerawilla or some place. Not sure if it’s true or not but apparently the Air force had all guns blazing into the night sky. I would be interested to know if there were any casualties from the fallout because what goes up must come down.

  4. Hi DefenceNet. I was going through the Tamilnet website and there is a report there about a SLAF Mi-24 that crashed in Anuradapura as it was scrambled to intercept the 2 aircraft that attacked Palaly airbase.

Seems both the pilot and gunner as well as the waist gunners escaped unhurt. Is there any truth to this? I spoke to my friends in the SLAF, both pilots, but they could not confirm.

  5. Indunil…

I heard the same story but that this crash had taken place last night. The date maybe wrong but the story the same… that is that a MI24 from Anuradapura had crashed and the pilots and crew are safe.

  6. Its sad not note that with the level of communication these days the government is still trying to hide their failures and losing all credibility.

  7. It websites like Defencenet where people turn too for information. However recently they seem to be churning out the government propganda in the way they report.

We want the truth. The comment section by fellow internet users seem to be more informative then the defencenet postings itself.

  8. Navindran you’ve hit the nail on the head. This morning when I logged on I was hoping to read all about what happened last night and was amazed to find that this site has no reference to what occurred last night.

One of the things I wanted to discuss with the rest of the Bloggers was the black out in Colombo last night. What was on with that??? We seem to be going back in time to an era like in WWII with black outs because of air raids. Why would the LTTE pass their primary target which I assume is the air force hangers and come into Colombo? Maybe they have filled a flight plan before take off.

The reasoning according to our Sec of Def is that with the black out the ltte aircraft would not be able to identify targets in Colombo. I beg to differ with this because most of the prominent land marks in Colombo like the hotels and high rise apartment complexes all had there generators going and would have been standing out for miles aiding the LTTE aircraft to their final destination rather that making it harder.

    Any thoughts on this???

  9. Yankeezulu! Agree with U on that mate... The blackout would not have been effective since most places would have had their generators running. But I read somewhere today that they are going to inform all people about this procedure (CEB blackout) and ask them not to switch on their generators until the threat is over. Makes sense but how practical this would be is my biggest question?

Navindran! May be our dear DefenceNet is also under pressure from the authorities not to disclose vital info. that will be advantageous to the enemy. So I think we should give the guy a break. However, I agree with you that our fellow bloggers have been providing more detailed info. on certain topics.

Anyway, I hope we get the correct Radar systems pretty soon so that we can see from where these stupid LTTE planes take-off...

  10. World War 2 helped those countries for the industrial revolution which made them rich after the war.
We have a war more than 25 years old. If we started to make our own weapons, gun ships, body armours, military vehicles, aircrafts we could see a silver line even in the war. It could help to improve our own technology while generating employments for the skilled. Have we started to make any bullet yet? Why we don’t start it at least now. We are not too late.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yea definitely man. Its high time that we did.

I know that we manufacture our own body armor. We also manufacture some APC's (Unibuffels), light vehicles like jeeps, and some naval fast attack-crafts (colombo ship yards).

But what we need is offensive weaponry. If we can manufacture our own ammunition and small-arms we can surely cut our defense costs by a significant amount. If we can make advanced buffel APC's we can surely put together a simple bullet or a kalashnikov. By the way the AK-47 is the simplest assault rifle design to manufacture. This would definitely be a very good start. I don't know what we are waiting for. However, i have heard that the president has authorized the creation of a defense company called Lanka Logistics.......thats all i know, I don't know if it is in operation yet.

  12. Navindran,
""It websites like Defencenet where people turn too for information. However recently they seem to be churning out the government propaganda in the way they report.""

We gain nothing by promoting the government. DefenceNet is not another Defence.lk or a Tamilnet.com. This blog is not our first priority. There are things worth dying for and we cannot sit in front of a computer whole day and update a blog every minute. Please try to understand.

    Yankeezulu,
"This morning when I logged on I was hoping to read all about what happened last night and was amazed to find that this site has no reference to what occurred last night."

We couldn't report it due to internet access limitations. Please understand the fact that there are some days in which all DefenceNet moderators and contributors are assigned for outstation work. On such days it's really difficult to gain access to computers. But make no mistake about it, this site will never be a government or a LTTE propaganda machine.

    Puffy,
"May be our dear DefenceNet is also under pressure from the authorities not to disclose vital info. that will be advantageous to the enemy."

No, we've never been under any pressure. We will never release information helpful to the enemy in any case. Once again the reason for lack of updates is not having access to internet.

  13. Defencenet-
You guys are doing a extremely good work. Unfortunatly does not matter how much info any one give it's human nature to look for more and more.
Therefore as you mentioned, this is not your first priority.
Therefore keep up the good work and as mentioned keep the first priority as always as the first priority "Save our Country". Bless you all.

  14. I'm not defending all the government cover ups, but I don't think the government should let the people know about *everything* that's going on.

For example if mines were found attached to a ship in Trinco, and it had made front pages, what would have happened? Raised insurance rates, no one wants to invest anymore yada yada, you get my point. It wasn't made public and is there any detriment to us from that? I wouldn't think so. Apart from not satisfying our inquisitively, which perein just mentioned, which really shouldn't be high on the National Security Agenda.

It's not that the investors don't now about it anyway, but it makes that much difference if it's given wide coverage in the media.

And Navindran, instead of complaining, next time LTTE agents come to collect "donations" from you, maybe you should suggest to them that they start their own blog to keep you updated.

  15. Illegal.existence-
Since when any defence system started to give all the info away. Take any country in the world. I truly think we should just sit back and let the guys do the day job before getting them to be a news casters.
Do n't you think generally our forces doing a extremely good job specially since Jaya Sikuru ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I heard comments against me. First because I am tamil(I did not hide under another name) why does illegal existence assume that the LTTE will come to me. Attidutes like this will never help solve the war.

Defencenet has been giving alot of good information. I assume some things need to be classified. However with the extent of information the LTTE has acess too, its a joke for the goverment to say some information is better hidden or it will be useful to the LTTE. Remember the LTTE executes all its operations with inside information. I presume its their need to hide information from the people to fulfill their political needs.

I am not asking Defencenet to work tiredlessly for this website. However when you have an ardent and involved readership, you should reciprocate in kind by trying your best to keep us updated.

So far you guys have done a good job. If you continue to report without bias as you have mentioned, I believe readership to this website will grow substantially.

  17. I could think of a lot of things I'd rather do that argue with a Tamil on a online forum, so I'm really not getting into anything here. But I will say this: the only thing Tamils have ever done is complain, complain, complain. That's why most Sinhalese hate you, that's why most other Indian's hate you (and trust me, they all do).

  19. Have been reading this blog with interest for a little while, I do find it interesting but the claims of neutrality, well not so sure about that yet...

For instance on the one hand the moderator claims...

"But make no mistake about it, this site will never be a government or a LTTE propaganda machine. "

    but right after, s/he posts:

"We will never release information helpful to the enemy in any case."

Who is the enemy you speak off? If you are calling one side an enemy, then you have already lost all pretence of neutrality.

    my 2c...

  20. ""Who is the enemy you speak off? If you are calling one side an enemy, then you have already lost all pretence of neutrality.""

The enemy is clearly the LTTE. LTTE is a terrorist organization. Under no circumstance will we support terrorism.

What makes DefenceNet different from propaganda machines such as Defence.lk and Tamilnet.com is that DefenceNet will always (and already have) publish the truth regardless of who won.

Let it be an SLA victory or an LTTE victory, we'll just not post some eye candy to please SLA supporters, instead we'll post what actually happened in the battlefield and reveal who actually used their sites to spread false propaganda.

Well if that is indeed the case, looking forward to reading more on your site in days to come. Cheers.

  22. Defencenet, I hope you will remove illegal existence comment on tamils. This blog should be to discuss defence issues and not be grounds for someone to vent their personnel frustrations. There are many other places for that.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think you just proved my point there.

And David, I'm not going to bother. Just ask any Indian what they think about people from below the state of Maharashtra, and you'll get my point.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well ask any Sri Lankan what they think of Indians and you'll get an answer too. But those views are best kept where they belong (and I've already mentioned that place). Why don't we stick to the military aspect of this war, which is what this site's about? There are lots of blogs on Kottu you could visit if you wanna air your xenophobia.
