Kumunamalai falls to the army, troops advance towards Mankulam

Troops from the army’s 59 division today captured the formerly LTTE held fishing village of Kumunamalai. Small attack teams of the army have been operating in this area for about 4 days but it was only today the army moved in to take complete control of the village. The tigers resisted the army advance for 7-8 hours before they retreated further north into LTTE held territory. 3 LTTE bodies were recovered while a vehicle belonged to the tigers was destroyed in an ambush.

Meanwhile Task Force 3 have made significant gains in the Mankulam region. TF3 units have been advancing towards Mankulam since yesterday dawn and by 17th (today) noon have advanced up to the Mankulam junction which connects A9 and A34 roads.

Map picture

Meanwhile it seems that the recent fall of Pooneryn has severely affected the morale of LTTE fighters. SLA units intercepting radio transmissions could hear groups of LTTE cadres blaming each other for not being able to save their former stronghold from the advancing army. SLA advance on the town was so swift that several groups of LTTE fighters deserted their ranks as Pooneryn fell. SLA’s morale on the other hand now seem to be at an all time high. Over 2500 army deserters have rejoined the ranks in the two days since the fall of Pooneryn.

The LTTE however had previously moved their heavy guns towards Kilinochchi and Elephant pass before the army reached Pooneryn. Army’s 53 and 55 divisions have started limited operations on LTTE’s frontlines at Muhamalai to advanced further south to choke the tigers even more. 58 division on the other hand is now in complete control of Pooneryn, Nallur and are poised to advance towards Paranthan. And 11kms south east of their current position lies Kilinochchi, another major stronghold of the tigers which is already being besieged by the 57 division. It must be said that recent military gains did not come easy. There have been casualties for the army in both Muhamalai and Pooneryn. Casualty evacuation is not easy and most of the time injured soldiers need to be transported by tractors before they are airlifted.

Meanwhile the Air Force has been playing an active role in the army offensives in the past week. Their bombers and MI-24 gunships have been frequently raiding LTTE armories, gathering points and military bases in Muhamalai, Pallai, Pooneryn and Paranthan.

  2. Reports are coming that SLA has sufferred heavy casulaties (over 150) on the National Fronts and have withdrawn behind the original FDLs leaving behind burned out corpses. Tiger commandos were in operation and have taken control of the SLA FDL, forcing the SLA to relocate the FDL 500m inland. Once again, chena boys attempts to advance on the National Fronts have been effectively crushed.

Also rumours are that an Mi-24 has been put out of action due to bullet holes.

They didn't die in vain. They sacrificed their day for our tommorow.

As people we should not allow the government to go for a ceasefire now.

There was the news 30 refugees reaching Tamil Nadu. If they can go that way, terrorists can some this way also. SLN should track down movements and shoot those boats that violate SL area.

Actually this was true (partially). It wasnt a mistake but a wounded female cadre was treated all the same. Doctors did not know it was a tiger till they saw her but the army knew they were transporting an injured tiger. Yes there was an error in our article.

mankulam is captured...the double blow to the tigers in a matter of days...53 and 55 makes further progress and advances...

TF3 and 59 link up is sped up...tigers are resisting badly at the moment...
Tiger leaders were heard in frenetic calls for help...severeal dead bodies of ltte cadres were captured...

Forces are expecting major defections from the ltte...sections have already contacted MI and are working from within to make a defection in due course...

these are signs of a failling force and a loss of confidence...

.forces have no issues dealing with the terrain...karuna knows this as the top of his palm and soe does gen SF...also many are working from within the ltte now with the hope of saving their lives...

signs of a dis integrating unit(LTTE)...
Beware it wont be easy to take mullaithivu...for various reasons the chief of which is civilians...

I have posted the plan couple of weak ago in myspace...

TAF is expected to attack...we know this...infact the ride kelanithissa was a farce...

or a trojan hourse we have uncovered now...

the real aim of the attack was to explore the feasibility of a master attack suicidal in nature...

we have not taken anything for granted...

Sri Lanka's air force pounded the Tamil Tiger rebels' main northern defence line yesterday, a day after government forces dismantled the last rebel stronghold on the island's west coast, the military said.

Fighter jets bombed the Tamil separatists' defense line in the Muhamalai area of Jaffna peninsula, north of the rebels' de facto state, twice on Sunday, said air force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara.

Nanayakkara said the jets also hit rebel artillery and mortar positions in the same area in retaliation for rebel shelling of soldiers on Saturday. He said details of damage and casualties were not immediately available.

On Saturday, the military announced it had dismantled the last rebel defense on the island's west coast and secured a land route to government-held Jaffna.

It was a key victory for the military, which has vowed to finally defeat the guerrillas by year's end.

To mark the triumph, the government declared a week of celebrations starting Monday to pay tribute to the armed forces.

The military has had no land link to the northern peninsula for more than a decade, forcing the government to depend on boats and aircraft for access. The main highway to the peninsula remains under rebel control.

Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said the peninsula's main military base no longer falls within the rebels' artillery range because of Saturday's gains. Nearly 40,000 soldiers are believed to be housed on the base.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa hailed the military's success in a televised speech Saturday and urged the rebels to lay down their arms and surrender.

Separately on Saturday, army troops destroyed 16 rebel bunkers in the Mullaitivu district and fought a series of battles in the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi, inflicting "heavy casualties" on the guerrillas, a military statement said Sunday.

It said soldiers also suffered "minor damage," but did not provide specific casualty details.

It was not possible to contact rebel officials for comment because most communication lines have been severed. Independent accounts are difficult to obtain from the battlefield because most journalists are barred from the war zone.

The Tamil Tigers have fought since 1983 to create an independent state for the country's ethnic minority Tamils, who have suffered marginalization by ethnic Sinhalese-controlled governments.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence

    1) Poonakari battle: 2 KIA, 1 MIA, 3 captured and inhumanely displayed in TV in violation of Geneva Convention on POWs. LTTE strategically withdrew from Poonakari and are regrouping in Paranthan area ready for a counter offensive, awaiting orders from Brigade leader to launch counter attack.

    SLA casualties: Over 50 dead.

    2) National fronts: No LTTE KIAs, 2 with minor injuries.

SLA caualties: Over 50 dead. Some corpses are badly burned.

    3) Mankulam:

No LTTE KIAs or injuries. LTTE regrouping in Oddusudan area awaiting orders for counter offensive.

    SLA caualties: Over 20 dead.

    4) Kumunamalai: No casualties whatsoever and LTTE were never there in this village. This location has no strategic importance to us whatsover, SLA effectively walked into a ghost town.

We have entered an ugly phase of war. Casualties from both sides are very high and our youth are dying and getting maimed in the battlefields everyday. Now is the time for a ceasefire. We need to start talking about a framework that will result in peaceful seperation as seen in Kosovo. Tamil Eelam is the aspiration of all Tamils. Please I implore you to press leaders from both sides to stop fighting and come to the negotiating tables.

Nice try Mr. Selva, nice try. Time to time people like you come here to talk about "start talking" and start talking about creating Eelam. For your future record, this country belongs to all Sri Lankans. No part of it will ever be given to an ethnic minority for exclusive ownership. You ask for half of the power, you are not going to get it. You ask for a federal system yo are not going to get it. You start committing acts of terror, you are not going to get it. Then you act like a pussy cat asking for "talks" to get the separation, still you are not going to get it.

We did lots of talking in the past only to be caught off guard and get blown off by LTTE terrorists. The only way you will get something is within a united Sri Lanka and if you are willing to be a part of common Sri Lanka. Your subtle racial lines to get an Eelam in Sri Lanka will never materialize. Since this is an impasse, I suggest you to join your LTTE terrorist brethren soon going to be in Eelam along with Chelvam, Bala , and Velu. In that way world has one less terrorist who asks for things he doesn't own, to deal with.

Mahen, probably it was not a good strategy to wihtdraw from Poonakari, because amongst many other disadvantages it enables the SLA to open a short land based route to the Jaffna peninsula and also made Paranthan vunerable.

  63. Guys,

To beat off the boredom, I managed to contact Rare Admiral Soosai on a crackling phone line. I dedicate the interview to Mahen and his gay partner Peeter. Here are the excerpts:

Q Rious: Good morning, Mr Soosai.

Soosai: Good morning to you, Q Rious.

Q Rious: Some, in the South think, you are dead.

Soosai: They wish I were dead; does that what you mean?

Q Rious: I think a bit of both.

Soosai: I don't understand the hatred; I am fighting for my people.

Q Rious: I don't understand it either; you fight for your people, when the people you fight for are fed up with violoence.

Soosai: I don't agree with it at all.

Q Rious: Do you mean that Tamils like violence?

Soosai: What I say is this, mate: this is not violence; this is freedome fighting.

Q Rious: But it produces violence; how about blowing up women and children? Is it art-work?

Soosai: I know that; our leader says it is inevitable.

Q Rious: You are trained to quote him.

    Soosai: We follow him.

Q Rious: And that is allegiance.

    Soosai: Very much so.

Q Rious: Mr Soosai, talking about you without sea is like talking about the Christ without Bible. You are in fresh water now, I guess.

Soosai: It is a good guess. Hak hak haa.

    Q Rious: Iranamadu Tank?

    Soosai: Top secret!

    Q Rious: And your fleet?

Soosai: Hidden deep down the blue sea.

Q Rious: Indian ocean or Arabian sea?

    Soosai: Top secret

Q Rious: How do your sailor adapt themselves to freshwater manouvering

Soosai: It is much easier than in sea

Q Rious: So, you used to sail against the tide and now go against the flow!

Soosai: Unfortunately, it is the case.

Q Rious: Two short-cuts to exhaustion.

Soosai: We are already reached that point.

Q Rious: What comes to your mind at difficult times?

    Soosai: Selvam; the lucky fellow.

    Q Rious: Departed!

Soosai: At least, his departure was instant; ours is going to be prolonged.

    Q Rious: Your leader?

Soosai: I don't talk to him any more.

    Q Rious: Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Soosai: I don't talk to any of them now. I just go from bunker to bunker. That's it.

Q Rious: They may call you a traitor.

Soosai: They can't. I haven't betrayed them. Changing bunkers comes nowhere closer to betrayal.

Q Rious: How long are you going to do this?

    Soosai: Until I evaporate!

    Q Rious: And your legacy?

Soosai: Will be strewn across the Iranmadu tank at the right time.

Q Rious: It sounds like a sad end!

Soosai: sand end, my friend. I started on sand and will end up on sand.

Q Rious: No reason, to be that gloomy. There are still plenty of opprtunities for your skill set.

    Soosai: Such as?

Q Rious: Sea Piracy is a topical option.

Soosai: Somalis are engaged in it.

Q Rious: That's in Arabian sea, off Kenya. No one to take over the Indian Ocean.

Soosai: That's a good idea; I will talk to my leader again, then. Thank you for the good point.

    Q Rious: Bon Voyage!

    Soosai:

  64. Qrious,

Your jokes are very funny, as funny as Andy Kaufman.

PS, Kaufman was not funny, he was thrown off stage for not being funny.

  65. Mahen,

Being gay is not a joke; it is a right and a choice. Enjoy it with Peeter, but never set foot in Zimbabwe on holiday. Robert Mugabe hates it, mate!

We don't want you two to return with minus P

About those pictures and they are from the same structure and it’s obvious. May I what point are you making and forgive my ignorance as I haven’t got the time to browse all the web pages, usually go into links given by DC.As a heavy tax payer and a responsible patriotic person would like to be taken for a ride by any quarter. I was reading your posts with some interest some may be true and some may be false. I am concerned for our brave troops at the front line when we constantly get reports of security forces gaining territory without gaining numbers KIA of the rebels nether do we see any captured weapons of the enemy and to me it seems that the hard core rebels seems to melt away nor sooner the forces move in. It seems to me the rebels may have escaped with the weapons to the east of A9 some escaped to TN some living among us in the South, some infiltrated back to the eastern province and the rest are in the Yala jungles protected by the ganja dealers and cultivators. I saw to my self that during the battles in toppigala some of your cadres came south unchallenged on the Mannampitya to Katharagama road some went in to the jungles just in front of the Air force special forces training camp near the Myanganne and the other lot avoided going to Badulla and turned off east to the Lahugala jungles. We know a well stocked shop in Siambalnduwa is supplying food items using our poor farmers to ferry supplies to rebels in those areas.Recently those poor transporters were killed over some dispute of some kind.People in Tanmawilla told me that there are big ganja plantations in that areas run by the rebels with supporters of some underworld gangs who have connections with powerful night club owners in Colombo. None of the serious MI offices have ever questioned or inquired from these folks. just only a few miles away on the main road to katharagama we saw a whole lot of STF or SF young lads were on a jogging exercise and I just prayed that they would complete their day without harm as I didn’t see any type of pre arrange protection, since areas like Kuda Oya and Tanamavilla has not been properly scrutinized for any infiltrations. yes sadly we have modayas only time will prove that.
I hope and pray that our brave and innocent members of the security forcers will face the future battles with courage and determination and I will never praise any politicians who are just trying to make capital out of this unfortunate situation where the world’s most ruthless terrorist bunch had established themselves for the fault of our politicians. Cleared areas need more security forces and police, just in case if the rebels have a surprise. Politicians should not tie up huge numbers of forces and police personal in protecting themselves where they indulge themselves in worthless poojas and ceromonies. This not the time for that and send those troopers to safeguard our vital installations and consolidate the areas newly liberated and don’t underestimate the enemy and what he has in store for us around the corner.MR should take a leaf out Churchill and Mrs Thatcher and evenVP,where during the crucial time of the battles that are going own the C-I-C of the country is at the ear shot of the military high command not pre empty the victory by putting flags all over the country and having poojas in Kandy, thus restricting the movement of people with roadblocks and tying up much needed security personal is a worthless exercise.

  69. Mahen,

At last, we are engaged in the most pressing constructive discussion at the moment, mate.

Most of the folks here drew the conclusion about your gay inclinations simply by the similarities of your posts and those of Peeter. Gays pee alike and think alike too.

I did refer to Shayam's single ball simply because he enjoyed it coming under the spotlight - his only properly-functioning body part: nothing sinister or malicious about it.

If you find the gay thing is offensive - which you shoudn't do - just provide us with a photograph of you and your wife / girlfriend in a compromising position; it is all over.

I promise you that I will be the first Modaya to campaign agaist the slur, on your behalf.

Forget about the Tamil-Sinhala divide that Peeter tries to artificailly create; I will be your mate for a worthy cause.

  76. Hi
People of the Diaspora in UK.I sincerely hope you Folks will attend your function on the 27th in london because perhaps this may be your leader’s last message. I do hope that he will change his mind and declare that he is ready for a negotiated settlement take the invitation of our Hon President and then we are very sure that your great leader will speak to the world from our Parliament on the 27th next year. His cause has been abandoned by the governments in the west while he is fighting for his dear life the conniving politicians in the west is fighting for your votes.MR will be his friend and his saviour at this moment and what a change of events and what a change of fortunes for him coming from the most unexpected quarter? Our President whose forces have surrounded him yet so magnanimous about it. I hope VP have the good sense to take that offer and be the chief minster of Vanni then help us to go after the thieves in your Diaspora who have swindled the monies collected by your hardworking people. We are appalled to see your roads like A32 and A9 poorly maintained and your admistrative centres that have captured sofar has been neglected, not a bit of tar on those roads and buildings are just ramshackle not worth keeping. Your thieving Diaspora money collectors have betrayed your leaders in Vanni by not giving any type of financial aid to elevate their poverty. I have being to their areas and it is a shame that your monies have gone to buy arms to stoke the fires of war while your heroes had to live on the hand outs given as food aid to the IDP while diaspora money colletors live in luxuary with a yearly income of nearly $350 million a year. This must be wrong and there must be a day of reckoning for those rouges who have hoodwinked your liberators and the hardworking Diaspora. If VP does not see the reality of his situation then he may make his next speech sadly from the now found world of Tamilchelvam.Sri lanka is not for division by any one, not even by the majority but it belongs to all peace loving citizens of Sri Lanka. We hope you will flock to that centre to hear your leader. Good luck I say. You see ours is a different country where we accept and forgive anyone, irrespective of ones grave acts of terror and I suppose that it’s our country’s benevolent culture. So we must see you all there,
