Sea clash off the coast of Nagarkovil

A major clash erupted between the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and Sea Tigers off Nagarkovil coastline early morning today. A large number of sea tiger boats including suicide craft were detected moving north in the seas east of Vadamarachchi by SLN Attack Craft at around 5.20AM today (1st). A firefight erupted between naval craft and LTTE boats and soon several Arrow gunboats from the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) joined in. 4 suicide boats were destroyed and the LTTE has officially admitted the loss of 7 black tigers. SLA believes at least 10 more regular sea tigers were killed in the confrontation but this has not been confirmed yet. 5 sailors of the SLN were injured and a naval craft was slightly damaged in the incident. Additionally, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) conducted a bombing raid on a sea tiger launch pad in Championpaththu at around 8.30AM today. Pilots have confirmed the destruction of two LTTE craft and LTTE casualty details (if any) in the aerial attack is not known yet.

Meanwhile two friendly countries have offered their support to Sri Lanka to provide solutions for the threat from Air Tigers. This move comes after the tigers managed to bomb Colombo and fly back to Wanni while ground based air defences failed yet again to shoot them down. One of the countries that extended support for Sri Lanka is home to the company that makes Z-143 aircraft which the tigers have modified with locally built bomb racks.

  1. Dvora and Hovercraft completely destroyed. A jet vessel was damaged. What's funny is, DN claiming that black tiger boats were 'destroyed'! As if the SLN sunk them ALL BY THEM SELF! Of course when the black tiger boats hit the SLN vessels, they do get destroyed and they take the SLN vessels along with them. DN, like the present government, is pulling a thick wool over the poor sinhaleyas' eyes.

  2. well done SLN and SLAF.

    tiger desperation at its height.

the stupidity of toiletnet reporting is now evident. if ships were sunk as they claimed on october 22, there is no need for today's attack!

we should monitor ANYTHING leaving vanni sea/land or air.

  3. Peccko,

Tamilnet also said Nimalawa ship was sunk and another vessel, MV Ruhunuwa, sustained heavy damage on 22 Oct. But that is not true. So how can we believe this Tamilnet story??

I think your reasoning skills have left you for good.
If tigers attack, that means they are desperate??
If the Tigers had huge success in the sea about 10 days ago that would mean there will be no need for another attack??
What kind of logic is this?
I think the portrait that has been painted in front of your eyes has completely tainted your view.

eg: the day before TAF attack colombo, ITN news showed few tamils who surrunded/reached to navy on an island. and the tamils talking about their deficulties in vanni and prices of food carocene iol ect in tamil which is very clear, and the sinhala translation was "the ITN news reporter saying LTTE was not allowing to go out of kili, they hit us that and this bull shit"

its clearly showing that the ppl in this country are "Modayas" cos what ever ITN rupavahini says these ppl believe without a second thought. same at our home cannot argue..

pointless and u do believe everything..

  9. Peccko,

Man tamilnet story of sinking of the hover craft is in my opinion is BS. The HC is not used for any kind of operations.

Ask tamilnet webmaster lier to come up with something believable.

LTTE is loosing all the battles it used to win 5-10 years ago with devastating success..

Those days for VELU is over when the barbarian rined supreme in Wanni.

Man SLA is in Velu's back yard.

You guys told us an year ago that SLA will never enter Wanni..

See what happens to the day dreamers like you.

Ask Velu to go back to his drawing boards(if there is any left in Wanni).

LTTE super humans does one thing when they are loosing the battles.

Meanwhile, pro-Tiger media said that the Sea Tigers engaged in a major clash with the Sri Lanka Navy gunships in the seas off Nagarkovil Saturday morning from 5:15 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., sinking an SLN Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FAC) and a hovercraft. Sea Tiger spokesman told that 20 of their attack crafts took part in the mission and seven Black Sea Tigers were killed in action.

Those reports said that a jet vessel of the SLN sustained damage in the sea battle and it was being towed by Navy.

When Lanka-e-News queried about the report from the Navy spokesman Dasanayaka, he said that Dvora was not involved in this attack and Navy's only hovercraft is now in Colombo.

  14. Is this evidence that Soosai has been killed? The tigers are running out of boats, so when using them they should aim for maximum impact. Using so many boats and black tigers would make most sense if they tried to attack a major target like a troop carrier.

This looks more like it could be an impulsive, ill-planned attempt to revenge Soosai's death.

"The LTTE still hasn’t publicly admitted the loss of Soosai, which leaves a slight trace of doubt over his fate. But many in the armed forces are now certain that Soosai is indeed dead."

  23. I'll just cut & paste parts of what I wrote in DW earlier.

difference between a raid and an ambush.

Raid is when two or three Black Tiger crafts, with low radar signature, sneak into a harbour and crash into a stationary vessel.

Ambush is when multiple Sea Tiger crafts engage a convoy of SLN vessels travelling between Trinco and KKS. Gunboats distract while Black Tiger crafts smash.

22 Oct was a raid. This morning's one was an ambush.

A similar ambush took place on 22 Feb 98; same place, similar scenario. Four Black Tiger crafts exploded, 11 Black Tigers died, and two SLN vessels were sunk while another was damaged.

  25. Offering Trophies amidst Notable Absentees

In the latest - may be the last as well - award ceremony for bravery aka butchery, Velupillai seemed to be handing out something that resembles the little containter that our peasand folks keep to store an essential ingredient of of chew of beetle; the item is question has lost both its glamour and significance.

Adding a funny dimesion to the comic saga, Velupillai looks so scary and frightened. His appearance implies that he is in fact the devil incarnate. I wish he acted in a Halloween drama to collect some money for his dwindling finances.

In the photographs there are a lot of notable absentees: the Ukranian pilot who lost his life is not represented even by a pupa of a cockroach, the closest match for at least for his skin colour.

Pottu, Soosai, Bhanu, and Theepan were not to be seen. Have they all gone? The speculation must be left to the conspirators.

Conspiracy theorists may also try hard to make a connection between the botched attack on naval crafts and yesterday's attack on Soosai's hideout.

Prabha's desperate looks sums up all; they are trying there best to show the world that the total annihalation has not taken place; the world know it is only until now.

  30. The hovercraft was up for sale a few years ago, and the highest offer was for USD 25mil, when its market value wasa lot higher. I beleive this craft was mothballed at that ttime, even though it was suitable for shallow water and covert operations such as induction of SF troops behind enemy lines.
It is not designed for naval war fare, since the vessel carries very little armour and weapons capability. It's fire power is limited to a few machine guns, and is easily out gunned by any sea-Tiger craft. Unless there have been some extensive modifications done to the vessel, it is an unlikely participant in a sea battle.

  33. To the SLG supporters in this forum;

It is important that we seek the truth, which gets white washed by both sides.

The attack on the two ships was discounted by the govt, by showing carefully selected frames, yet nothing conclusive. If you watch the video carefully, they only show the stern of one ship and blackened super structure of the other. Obviously they are both above water and not sunk, but perhaps are damaged more than they want us to know.Do take a second look at the video with an open mind.

These things happen in war. As long as more damage is done to the enemy and you live to fight another day, the game is won.

The SLN definitely won the clash, but perhaps they aren't telling us the complete truth.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Didn't know that they were still using those water jet boats from over a decade ago.

They are definitely not the best suited for this type of high speed engagement, and have historically had a higher casualty rate.

SLN needs to continue the arrow boat concept and upgrade as necessary. They seem to be a fantastic alternative even to the FACs in close quarters and shallow water combat.

  36. "The other question is how will the LTTE respond now as its domain is shrinking? In the past the LTTE had leveraged the criticalities of India-Sri Lanka relations to its advantage to survive and rise up once again to carry the battle another day. Can the LTTE, with its hands tainted with the blood of Rajiv Gandhi, go back to the same ploy? It is true there is loud public outcry in Tamil Nadu against the sufferings of Tamils in the war zones. But at the same time it is equally true that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has made it clear that this sympathy should not be equated with sympathy for the LTTE."

(October 21, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) There is a lot of excitement as the Sri Lanka security forces are inching towards Kilinochchi from the southwest on multiple axes. The political tensions in Tamil Nadu over the plight of Tamil civilians in the war zone have added a bit of nervous expectation in Sri Lanka to the war scene. Broadly the security forces have enlarged the forward line roughly by eight km on the west of Kilinochi, isolating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) stronghold of Nachikuda on the western coast. Task Force 1 which had bypassed Nachikuda, captured Manniyankulam and Vannrikulamon its advance along the A32 route to Pooneryn. Thus the LTTE access to sea routes to Tamil Nadu from the northern Mannar coast will probably come to an end shortly with these developments.

The57 Division, earlier locked in battle at the key road junction of Akkarayankulam (which leads to Kilinochchi in the north and the A9 highway in the east), has "pierced" its defences. According to the security forces this was the last of the LTTE strong points defending Kilinochchi. It has not been a cakewalk to the security forces as the LTTE had put up some resistance at selected places. The breakthrough in Akkarayankulam, in particular, has come after a lot of blood shedding. The defence spokesman has admitted losing '33 soldiers during the clashes in the weekending Sunday Oct 19th; 48 were injured and three were missing. This was perhaps one of the biggest losses suffered by the security forces. On the other hand the LTTE appear to have lost 12 cadres.

However, overall the LTTE had not been able to inflict such losses more often as the security forces advanced. While this could be for reasons of tactical withdrawal, it is clear that the LTTE efforts so far have lacked strength and firepower required to blunt the offensive. Though the fall of Kilinochchi looks imminent, in tactical terms its capture might not be essential. In any case, it would probably come within the security forces' heavy machine gun range in the coming week, making it untenable for the LTTE to hold. Capture of Kilinochchi, the LTTE's administrative capital till recently would certainly be a big loss of face to it. For President Rajapaksa it would add yet another feather in the cap after the 'victory' in the east. And that could make him politically stronger than ever before.

As the Task Force-1 advances to Pooneryn, it would be possible for the security forces to create an anvil extending from the western coast to Kilinochchi so that the hammer of 53 and 55 divisions operating along northern frontlines could be brought down upon the LTTE strong points in the crucial Elephant Pass/Nagarkovil bottleneck. The skirmishes reported in Muhamalai on Oct 16th were probably a probing attempt of the security forces for such an offensive. This option would also provide relief to 57 Division troops which had been on the offensive for three months now. A northern offensive could make the LTTE fight within a narrow strip with only one exit route open on the east to LTTE's Puthukkudiyiruppu defence complex.

If and when that happens, the LTTE domination of the A9 highway would probably end. It would also render both Nachikuda and Pooneryn defences meaningless unless the LTTE can quickly launch a counter stroke. But the moot point is does the LTTE want to launch such an offensive west of A9 highway at all? Their defensive pattern so far would indicate such an intention might not be there at all.

This is only one of the many ways in which this operation can be progressed. With the imminent fall of Kilinochchi, the Army Commander Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka has more options now than ever before. The monsoon is on and close air support could become tricky and mobility and visibility would also be affected. But weather gods are neutral and affect both sides. As the war in Wanni would involve jungle bashing, at best monsoon would slow down the operation on both sides and not stop it.

    Understanding the LTTE strategy

So far in the areas west of A9 highway, the LTTE's conventional defence strategy appears to be based upon a series of strong points with bunds and ditches stretching for miles between them. The bunds along the expected axes of advance have been constructed to slow down the advancing troops and attack them at selected points when they try to break through the obstacle.

This is a strategy of the First World War vintage that became obsolete with the advent of increased battlefield mobility, greater depth and density of fire power, and enhanced battlefield reconnaissance capabilities. Unless the bund is protected by fire power and layers of obstacles, modern armies can reduce their effectiveness with no great difficulty.

In modern conventional warfare the technique has morphed into mobile defence based upon strong points that dominate the gaps between them with hard hitting armour based mobile teams. This technique is useful when a large area is to be defended by smaller number of troops as in the case of the LTTE. This strategy if successfully applied would lead to a lot of bloodletting and discourage advancing forces from launching the main offensive.

The LTTE had perhaps adopted defences based on strong points for this very reason. It was fighting against an opponent who outnumbered it by at least ten to one. On hindsight, last year the LTTE probably allowed a comparatively free run to the security forces to occupy areas south of road Vavuniya-Mannar along the Mannar coast so that the troops would be drawn into fighting the strong points further north. After that starting with Adampan in May 20008 there had been a series of LTTE strong points - big and small - forming layers of defences –Adampan-Nedunkandal-Andankulam, Madhu-Palamipiddi-Periyamadu, and so on.

But the LTTE had neither the required mobility nor fire power to dominate the gaps between the strong points to stop the security forces that had superior mobility, fire power and numbers. So probably it took recourse to constructing miles of bunds between strong points. And the security forces have been breaking the inadequately defended bunds regularly. Moreover, the LTTE strategy had seeds of failure as the axes of advance from south to north fanned out over increasingly larger gaps between strong points as the war progressed without a matching increase in troop strength. This is borne out by the LTTE inflicting heavier casualties on the security forces only when their axes converged on Kilinochchi.

The LTTE's performance so far has demonstrated the limitations of insurgency forces in carrying out conventional operations. Being light outfits with limited artillery support they were better suited to tackle company level tactical operations. In order to maximise the impact of conventional operations of insurgents, guerrillas have to be employed in tandem to hit rear areas and gun positions to destabilise the conventional opponent. The LTTE had not been able to carry out such commando strikes effectively so far in Eelam War-4.

During the war in Elephant Pass in 2000 the LTTE was able to overcome its weakness in conventional capability through superior battlefield leadership, high morale, and psychological advantage against the opponent who lacked them. The security forces then lacked the single mindedness of purpose they are showing now. In the Eelam War- 4, clear convergence of political and military focus on military objectives untroubled by other issues has resulted in the relentless pursuit of the LTTE.

The overconfident LTTE leadership is probably paying the price now for ignoring the two important developments in the security environment since the last Eelam War. These were the impact of Karuna's defection and the subsequent loss of east, and the qualitative and quantitative improvements in the Sri Lanka armed forces. This overconfidence of the LTTE gave the security forces a head start when they launched the offensive. The self defeating technique of suicide bombings has also deprived the LTTE of potential junior leaders, though they brought short lived glory.

    Future portends

The tactical conjectures discussed so far might be of interest only to military minds. The question in everyone's mind is probably 'when' – in what time frame –Kilinochchi would fall and the A9 highway would open. It is not easy to answer this question. And there are always the imponderables of battlefield that affect the best laid plans.

The security forces had entered Kilinochchi district on July 31, 2008. They appear to be in no hurry to rush forward to overcome the LTTE strong points as they advance. Instead they have focused on inflicting maximum casualty on the LTTE. They have neutralised only those LTTE strong points that mattered on the way and by passed others. This perhaps tied down the LTTE to hold on to all its defences in anticipation.

But now as fall of Kilinochchi looks imminent, political and humanitarian crises are building up in the horizon. These could take the time plan for conduct of war out of the hands of the military. So far President Mahinda Rajapaksa appears to have given full freedom to Gen Fonseka to progress the operation in his own fashion. President Rajapaksa is coming under increasing pressure from India, where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is facing flak from his Tamil Nadu coalition partners. So both the President and Gen Fonseka might decide to speed up the operations to get the A9 highway opened up and bottle up the LTTE within the Mullaitivu district. This could result in the security forces suffering more casualties than they had bargained for. On the other hand it would give a semblance of normalcy and relieve some of the pressures on the President. Of course it would reduce the plight of displaced civilians caught between the warring sides in the area.

The other question is how will the LTTE respond now as its domain is shrinking? In the past the LTTE had leveraged the criticalities of India-Sri Lanka relations to its advantage to survive and rise up once again to carry the battle another day. Can the LTTE, with its hands tainted with the blood of Rajiv Gandhi, go back to the same ploy? It is true there is loud public outcry in Tamil Nadu against the sufferings of Tamils in the war zones. But at the same time it is equally true that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has made it clear that this sympathy should not be equated with sympathy for the LTTE.

Of course the easiest option for the LTTE is to inflict maximum possible casualties, cut loose, and pull back its assets deep into the Wanni jungles. Then lie low for a while, shed the conventional uniform and go back to the guerrilla mode. That would mean further suffering and agony for everyone with more suicide bombings, blasts and mayhem everywhere including areas outside the war zone. A more logical thing to achieve a win-win situation would be to sit with Tamil politicians, evolve a face saving political formula to find a democratic solution. But can Prabhakaran, whose strong point had never been logical reasoning, pull such a surprise? I doubt it. And I like millions of others would be happy if he proves me wrong.

  40. Even your Defence Ministry said: "However, one of the suicide boats exploded in proximity to Nimalawa causing considerable damage to the ship’s hull."

You can call it "minor", "failed", or even an "almost" attack. The bottom line is that the Black Tiger craft wanted to blow a hole in the hull which would lead to the sinking of the vessel.

Even AFP reported: “One of the merchant vessels — MV Nimalawa — is sinking and the other vessel was damaged,” a defence official who declined to be named said.

Fair enough, the vessel was prevented from sinking but the damage done is still worthwhile.

  43. The fall of the LTTE west coast will be the most important milestone in this war.

No more smuggling from India. Unlike the east coast, the west coast with its shallow water and proximity to Indian fishermen, is very difficult to blockade.

No more need for extensive troop deployment along the west coast from Mannar Island to Delft and Jaffna to prevent sea tiger landings.

No more need for extensive naval deployment. Many boats can be moved to the east coast.

No more easy infiltration of Jaffna from Pooneryn. Again, troops can be moved elsewhere.

No more artillery attacks from Pooneryn.

No more easy escape route for LTTE leaders. Big moral impact, tigers surrounded and cut-off.

Now the two offensive division in Jaffna can easily join either by attacking from across land or moving first to Pooneryn.

With so many troops now free to go on the offensive and LTTE logistics stopped, I think the end will come more quickly than many suspect.

  44. It's not surprising that the LTTE was on the offensive this week. They are remembering the death of Brigadier. Thamizhchelvan. This was also expected by the SLDF and they were all kept at full alert. Still the LTTE managed to go about their work unhindered. This clearly shows the confidence of the LTTE and their ability to be calm and composed in the face of immense pressure. Whilst the majority people in this blog would like to think it as a sign of desperation (The attacks), the clever ones know how ominous it is to the SLDF. But of course the clever ones in this blog are the LTTE supporters and rest are a big bunch of modayas!
    Heroic salutes to Thamizhchelvan anna!

Those who failed to prosper or learn to live in harmony with others for over a few thousand years call others stupid, even while facing annihilation due to their own stupid ways.

In order to start the learning process, the first step is to understand that your ways are not getting you anywhere..in you guys case, that first step will never be taken.

In history, your kind ends up holding hands with the dynosaurs and similar others. History will perhaps categorize the tamil tigers along with the sabre-toothed tigers.

You are correct. Once the western coast is de-contaminated, the LTTE will be facing bleak prospects. There really would be little need to continue to persue a military approach, since any improvements to living standards in the liberated areas will define the civillian realities.

That will pressurise the LTTE to continue with a conflict, since their intrinsic inability to manage anything will cause the population to start running away. Keeping a reluctant population under the gun has never succeeded, and our forces' capability to infilterate and decapitate leaders will be put to good use at that time.

    - LOL YES you dumb sinhala racist scumbag, they use film rolls and are limited to only 24, therefore they take one picture, develop it, scan it, and then use adobe photoshop to create the other 5 since it saves them extra film!

It is amazing how much attention the Tamil Nation's leader and the miltary get compared to Maihna pimping herself to the world to get money to fight her own people in the island! LOL.

Not even the dead innocent sinhala sons get this much attention! LOL. Only the poor parents of the sinhala fuc fuc huks triple broken gem blessed sorry racist mthrfkrs care about the well being of their sons in a war that is not theirs, but driven by extremist sinhala buddhist scum... Save yourselves and realize the futility of your war against human rights of another race.

Sooner or later you will have to only call the land you inherited excluding the Tamil Nations's land as Sri Lanka.

Don't be greedy, knaive, and please educate yourself. Those who educate themselves will see the irrationality of the Sinhala racist leaders blindfolding the entire Sinhla race.

If there was any legitimacy and truth to the extremist racist Sinhala leaders, then you would have crushed the Tamil asipirations.

However, the fact it never ends is because a race will not bow its heads to extreme racists hell bent on GENOCIDE.

Please go to your Sinhala libraries and read if not in English, atleast in your mohter tongue of Sinhala and try to understand the history. Then you wil realise something that your leaders have been avoiding to mention to you, or what you have failed to educate yourself on.

  78. So, yes...let's call a spade a spade...

Since lately, SLAF performance has been somewhat sub-par in my view.

Either RoshanG pulls up his socks and be smart or he should step down and let someone else (younger and smarter) take the "cockpit" I say!

The fact that SLAF could not pursue and shoot down the puny tincans recently (sorry, I was in Hawaii on business and simply didn't get a chance to join in on the lively debate herein, so here I am belatedly! lol ) was an abysmal disappointment!

I would have thought after the AAFB attack, RoshanG would have smartened up...but not sure if that has been the case judging by the recent record...anyway, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and hope no further tincan menace will be tolerated…after all, his primary job is to protect our skies and if he cannot do that, then I think he should step down!

  79. I think we should encourage our people to look for better entertainment and suppliers than those in TN. In particular we should 'encourage' our cinema industry to avoid movies which make money for our enemies.

    Let's take this message wide, loud and far, patriots. It is as easy as cut and paste;
    --------------------------------
TAMILNADU NATTAMI CIRCUS STARVES TO FORCE TERROR ON US..

..AND WE KEEP BUYING THEIR MORONIC MOVIES, WHICH SUPPORTS THEM...

WTF?...is the question I really have to ask.

Sri Lanka has been bleeding to death and the hostiles on the other side of the sea have always cheered at the prospects of our demise. And yet our economy and business keep on buying from them, and provide a ready cash flow for their cheap, lunatic entertainment which never really reaches appreciable quality standards.

Just last week we saw one group of monkeys clamour for their banana and gradually subside. Now another couple of celluloid heros of monkey cinema are on a gastronomical misadventure calling for intervention in Sri Lanka in support of terrorism.

Sri Lanka should make a conscious effort to teach these bastards a lesson. If the government cannot take an overt stance in this regard, at least the Sri Lankan entreprenuers and movie goers can. All that needs to be done is to refuse to patronize movies in which any of these terrorist supporters and our enemies make money out of, or play a role in. That should not be too hard, these monkeys are just too ridiculous to be missed.

Watch or play a game, patronize local theatre, watch TV, or your neighbor's wife. Stop patronizing TamilNadu movies, please people. And tell the movie theatres that we will boycott any Tamilnadu movies if they decide to screen them. There is a need to establish our independence from the thalathel sakkiliyas across the border, and there's more than one way to do that. And if you still continue to miss them too much, go to the zoo. We've got better looking monkeys there.

To a certain extent I would support the SLAF's views. The fact is that we have limited resources and do not have the luxury of creating and maintaining organic air arms parallel to the SLAF. Qrious mentioned in this blog that the foreign reserves are drying up. When they are gone it will be very difficult to import the sort of weapons and equipment needed to do what the SLN & SLA want.

Since Sri Lanka is an island, the SLAF should be able to carry out the same functions of air arms of other countries' navies. The SLAF should take every opportunity to interact not only with other air forces but also with other navies and gain proficiency in certain skills: flying over water, identifying ships, air-sea interdiction and so forth.

Although it would be great for the SLA to have tactical UAVs and MANPADS, they just cannot be afforded. The SLAF barely has recon aircraft and air defense weapons of its own.

You seem to be the mother of all sinhala modayas. Tamil films in sri lanka are seen by Tamils, who want to live in free Thamizh Eezham very soon. They will keep watching more movies IF the Tamil Cinema would continue to support their cause in this fashion. In any event, the Tamil cinema business in Sri Lanka isn't exactly a gold mine and the cinema owners are having to work very hard to make a little profit. On the other hand the modayas do not have neither the linguistic skills nor the intellect to comprehend even the stupid commercial Tamil movies, let alone the clever, classy ones. The deep rooted hatred towards the Thamizh language has always got the better of the modayas' curiosities and they always chose to watch a different genre of Indian films which fitted perfectly to their pea-sized brains, the Bollywood blockbusters. Sri Lankan issue a diversionary tactic: Jayalalithaa

    The Hindu

Chennai (PTI): AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa on Tuesday charged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi with using the Sri Lankan Tamils issue to "divert" public attention from various problems including the spectrum allocation issue "rocking" the Union IT Ministry headed by A Raja of DMK.

In a release here, Jayalalithaa said "at a time when the people were disgruntled over the DMK government's handling of price rise and unprecedented power crisis, the Sri Lankan Tamils issue came as a Godsend for him (Karunanidhi) to divert public attention to a relatively distant issue."

She also alleged that the issue came in handy for the DMK leader to "divert attention" from the spectrum allocation issue which was "exposed" by the media.

She criticised Karunanidhi for his latest pro-Sri Lankan Tamils measures including creating a fund for them, and asked why was the DMK "silent" when the Centre was reportedly supplying military equipment to Colombo, shared defence expertise and imparted training to Lankan army personnel, and demanded his resignation.

She also claimed credit for "first raising the issue of the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils."

  153. scrap,

i have screwwed soooo many northern kundis. 13 to be precise. was your mother among them??????

you cannot face the truth insn't it? check my calculation.

    average oxygen requirement of a human = 250 cc/min

average time of an oepration on a wounded terrorist = 60 minutes

    oxygen requirement for one operation = 250 x 60 = 15,000 cc

    capacity of 1 medical oxygen cylinder = 3,455 ltrs = 3,455,000 cc

    52 cylinders = 179,660,000 cc

TF the expected TOTAL number of tigers needing operations until the next batch arrives = 3,455,000/15,000 = 11,973

so on average 11,973 tigers are critically injured within a oxygen cylinder supply cycle.

i am begging from the GOSL please please don't give oxygen to terrorists. LET THEM DIE, DIE, DIE IN TENS OF THOUSANDS

  158. A Great Nation - the USA

Once again, the flamboyant nation has defied the contemporary politics. The first black president has just been elected, something we couldn't even dream of, a year ago. In that sense, Obama's campaign that spanned for well over 21 months sounds like eternity.

Despite the obvious and sometimes over-the-top display of arrogance and the short-comings of the elected presidents, the influence of America on the rest of the world has been a positive one: it is the nation which abolished the slavery against all odds at that time; it is the most generous nation on earth, that often goes unnoticed, especially in the presence of naughty things it commits from time to time; it is the nation that appointed a black man as the first commander-in-chief of the army; it is the nation that appointed the first black woman Secretary-of-State; and as far as our destiny is concerned, it is the first nation that outlawed Tamil Tigers as a terrorist outfit, when Europeans were scratching their heads while dragging their feet to do the same.

By electing the first Black president, the nation shows its steely mettle once again to do the right thing, not necessarily when the time seems to be right. What the US stand for, is an inspiration for all of us.

George Bush is the most unpopular president in recent times. No Republican candidate wanted to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him during the campaign for the fear of loss. He may have felt abandoned by the friends and allies.

Bush's unpopularity does not stem from his persona or famous gaffes or funny gestures, but from his association with the neo-conservative hardliners like Dick Cheney and Donal Rumsfeld.

Without his own political vision, he relied on these characters to shape up his administration and it was a disaster; he even kept his own father, a veteran politican and administrator, at arm’s length, of course at his peril.

The association with extremists, racial or otherwise, always brings bad news in the long run. The old fox Karunanidhi, next door, is in similar circumstances due to his on-and-off relationship with Tamil Tigers. He is just half-way through in swallowing the bitter pill.

Despite the bad headlines, Bush is a compassionate human being whose image has been unfairly tarnished by failed policies that he was trapped in, by following the wrong advice. With his administration behind us, we are going to miss the funny gestures, the famous sayings now collectively termed as Bushism: Bush used to wink at inappropriate time at inappropriate people – for instance, the Queen of England, a protocol-disaster; he famously said that all America’s imports come from abroad, during his first election campaign!!!

I am sure, as usual, a delegation from Tamil Diaspora will make some contact with the president-elect, just to grab some headlines. We have to brace ourselves for it. However, Obama's policy on Afghanistan - harder than that of Bush - reflects how he feels about terrorists. So, the Tamil Diaspora has everything on the table to feel disappointed by him. A president elected on a very popular wave of support, does not want to contradict himself for the sake of brutal group which is in its dying days.

With the White House welcoming the new First Family, it is normal and natural, the occupants in its embassy in Colombo may change as well. The folk who blatantly interfered with our national affairs may see the end of his term too, which may be a great relief for many. The speech he delivered in Madras University just shows he has nothing to lose at last, as he may have sailed close to diplomatic winds. He may be posted elsewhre, but that may not be a match for a tropcial island with breathtakingly beautiful beaches.

Let's hope this nation prospers for the good of the rest of the world while being the beacon of hope for fairness and freedom – that it stood for centuries.

GDP will collapse by 25-40% or more within the next year since TEA,Rubber,Coconut and garments prices have collapsed. Pakistan is bankrupt and on life support and China is about to enter a recession. In addition, GSP+ will taken off very soon. India's Congress will have no hope in hell returning and offering 100 million credit lines.

28 countries are on the close to bankrupt list including Sri Lanka. The latest being Seychelles.. Seychelles was one of the best managed countries in the Indian Ocean, had one of the highest gdps in the area, yet it went belly up in a couple months after the financial crisis.

You think sri lanka can hold on much longer with massive corruption going on ?

All of which means, there is no financial bail out possible. Sri Lanka has no chance whatsoever to withstand this. Even first world countries won't be able to handle the torrent (Iceland is prime example. It went bankrupt in October, 2008).

No matter how much Rajapakse pours in borrowed money, the army is exhausted and morale is pit bottom. Its a matter of time before the house of cards collapses.

Obama victory will mean complete financial collapse of the regime. The regime is reacting the only way it can, impose repression measures, set up a secrete police network, crack down on radio, television and newspapers.

VP has no need to expend his valiant forces on a wasted effort to push back a regime on the verge of collapse... He needs to save his troops to secure the territory after the Sri Lanka's collapse...

  169. Troops overrun Akkarayankulam built-up in Kilinochchi
The advancing infantry battalions of the 57 Division, led by Major General Jagath Dias have overrun the Akkarankulam built-up area, Wednesday (Nov 5), after days of heightened fighting with LTTE, leaving scores of terrorists killed and as many injured.

According to latest military reports, troops flanking the western edge of the built-up have entered the area initially, followed by a swift incursion by the troops from south of the battlefront. The military forward dominations are still continuing in the eastern edge of the Akkarayankulam built-up at the time of reporting as terrorists were reported mounting intermittent resistances from distance positions, further north.

During subsequent search operations conducted in the area, troops have recovered two terror dead bodies,2 T-56 assault riffles and a I-com set, military sources said.

The Akkarayankulam built-up area is considered to be the main LTTE concentration point located 9 kms Southwest of Kilinochchi town area. The latest triumph is expected to add momentum to the military surge towards the LTTE heartland, defence observers state.

Troops are further consolidating defences in the area, Wanni military sources further said.

  170. strategy page

    Bold And Desperate
November 3, 2008: The LTTE is putting its last reserves of trained fighters into the defense of Kilinochchi. Casualties are increasing, as is LTTE pressure on its allies in southern India (Tamil Nadu, the original homeland of the Sri Lankan Tamils) to get India to force the Sri Lankans to stop their military operations against the LTTE. This is essential if the LTTE is to survive as a viable separatist organization. If the LTTE government in northern Sri Lanka is destroyed, the LTTE leadership will be driven into exile, and become just another expatriate terrorist group. Such organizations have come on hard times since September 11, 2001, and face eventual extinction because of international counter-terrorism efforts. Thus the LTTE is fighting for its very survival. Right now, the LTTE has weather on its side. The monsoon rains have begun and will continue for another month or so. The constant rain makes the government air force less effective, and slows army operations and supply movements (over the many dirt roads leading to combat units.) The army is advancing up the coasts, while it is stalled in front of Kilinochchi, which is apparently now defended by the LTTE best fighters. Political efforts to get India to intervene are noisy but hopeless.

The army apparently suffered over 2,000 casualties in October, based on informal reports coming back from the front, and the sudden lack of official casualty reports. While the army is still advancing on the coasts, the monsoon rains and stiffer resistance has halted movement in the center, where the forests, and the LTTE capital of Kilinochchi, are located. The army still believes that it will have crushed the LTTE by the end of the year, but wants to limit their casualties while carrying that out.

November 2, 2008: The navy encountered about twenty LTTE boats off the northwest coast, sank four of them, and killed at least 16 LTTE fighters. The rest of the boats scattered, most back to India. The LTTE supply situation is desperate because of clashes like this. At a refugee center some 165 kilometers north of the capital, police arrested 93 Tamils on suspicion of terrorist activity. There has been a big increase in LTTE terrorist activity, apparently in an effort to halt the army offensive on the north. The reasoning here is that, if the LTTE can pull off more terror attacks in the south, the government will put more restrictions on the Tamil civilians, and this will enable the LTTE to make a more convincing call for India to intervene and stop the Sri Lankan army from destroying the LTTE armed forces and government in northern Sri Lanka. This is a long shot and pretty desperate, but boldness has enabled the LTTE to get where it is today, so why change.

November 1, 2008: The army captured the village of Nachchikuda, on the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. This coastal village was used as a base for the "Sea Tigers" (smuggling and suicide boat bombers).

October 29, 2008: LTTE terrorists in the east killed four Tamils belonging to a pro-government militia.

October 28, 2008: The LTTE used its air force (one or two single-engine commercial aircraft) to bomb an army base 310 kilometers northwest of the capital, and a power plant just outside the capital. The army base attacks did little damage, but the power plant attacks started a fire that caused the plant to shut down, and black out parts of the capital. The new radar system spotted the two LTTE aircraft, but a Chinese made F-7 jet sent up to shoot down the LTTE aircraft, was unable to get a target lock with its heat seeking missiles, and the LTTE aircraft escaped to their jungle air strip. The damage to the power plant reduced its electrical output by 40 percent, and will take several months to repair. There will be no electrical shortages, as during the monsoons, the hydroelectric system is operating at peak capacity.

  171. I'd like to make a point about
commercially available GPS devices that the LTTE is using to navigate their planes to their GPS coordinates. Based on a conversation I had with a colleague of mine involved in this area, I understand that there are currently several GPS jammers available on the market (this information is in the public domain). In fact during the second Iraq war, a Russian company sold Saddam Hussein's Govt several anti-jamming devices to disrupt the expected cruise missile attacks which were launched by the American forces (this information is also in the public domain). The same Russian company sold several of these devices to the US Pentagon which studied the impact of these anti-jamming devices. My colleague indicated that a localized jamming device could be built fairly easily using current microwave technology but that one would need an array of stations to block the GPS signals on a large scale. My point is that since the LTTE is using commercially avilable GPS devices to navigate their planes, and since they have precise GPS coordinates for major strategic locations, one counter measure to disrupt these bombing runs could involve using these localized anti-jamming devices.
