Terumurikandy junction captured

57 division units operating south of Iranamadu today overran the strategic Terumurikandy junction. Fierce fighting has been raging in this area since yesterday (10th) where the tigers resisted the army advance for hours. 57 division units suffered casualties while trying to overrun the LTTE built earth bund yesterday with over 20 soldiers being killed and around 60 more being injured. LTTE were able to capture 12 bodies of SLA soldiers fallen in yesterday’s battle.

However, 57 division units who fought relentlessly despite casualties, overran the Terumurikandy  junction today (11th) afternoon. Experienced LTTE fighters manning this bunker line withdrew toward Iranamadu, unable to resist the two pronged attacked launched by the SI formations. LTTE casualty details are not available as of this moment. Clearing ops are still continuing in the area.

  4. DN,

Terimurikandy bund is supposed to be the part of the "L" shaped trench surrounding Kili town.

Does this mean we have breached their last line of defence towards Kili town, or are their anymore bunds to come?

    Hung Out To Dry
December 11, 2008: The army is now advancing from three directions. Up from the south, along the east coast and. Down along the Jaffna Peninsula. And up from the south, in the center of the island, along the A9 highway, towards the rebel headquarters of Kilinochchi. In the last week, troops advancing up the A9 have captured two towns; Puliyankulam and Kanakarayankulam and much of the highway. The LTTE is putting a more effective resistance in front of their headquarters town of Kilinochchi, and casualties on both side are rising as the fighting intensifies. Troops of the 57th and 58th divisions are losing several dozen dead and wounded on some days. The army has air power, and much more artillery (guns and rocket launchers), so the LTTE defenders are often suffering equal, if not more, casualties. The loss of Kilinochchi will be a major blow to LTTE morale, and result in a lot more surrenders by dispirited rebels. Enemy morale is already low, in the wake of the Islamic terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. This shattered what little support the LTTE had left in India. That left LTTE supporters in Sri Lanka and south India feeling isolated and hung out to dry. As much as the Sri Lankan generals want to crush the LTTE once and for all, they don't want a bloodbath, especially among their own troops. So the advance is methodical, with everyone alert to LTTE attempts to launch one of those commando type offensives that have done so much damage to the army in the past. But back then, the army was less well trained and led, and the LTTE had a much higher proportion of experienced fighters in the ranks.

December 7, 2008: In the north, three experienced LTTE fighters, each with nearly a decade of experience, surrendered. There have been more surrenders from less experienced LTTE fighters, but it's unusual to get so many senior men giving up.

December 5, 2008: Advancing up the east coast, troops captured the village of Alampil, and about a hundred small boats used by LTTE forces to move along the coast.

  17. Making Hay While the Sun Eclipses

Last year, when I was going through Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi, I was wondering bewildered at the customs: the folk who manned a particular desk, was in a world of his own without letting me pass through him. He didn't give a reason; nor did he show any interest in addressing the issue. The problem turned out to be a little strip at the bottom of the form to be ripped out and then handed over to the folk. I didn't know it; an Indian lady told me the trick, winking this was India. The lazy folk would not spare a word for me to tell me the need of removing the little strip to pass through the customs.

You may think this is one-off. It is not. Ask any Indian friend about it and he will nod in agreement.

India's worst enemy is within - its own bureacracy. They are lazy, corrupt and unpatriotic. Millions of Indians know it and don't know how to fix it. The cancer has already spread far and wide.

It is easy to blame the heads of security when thing go wrong; even heads may roll. But the situation has no short answers, because it boils down to individual responsibilities. There are sensible people at the top, but they are powerless to deal with the national syndrome.

In this context, it is a mistake to dispose of so many resources to keep an eye on the emergence China as a regional super power. In China, the patriotic factor is much more stronger than that of India, if the two nations ever come closer to a conflict. When Indians emerge through the web of region, religion and caste, it will be too little and too late.
Therefore, the accumulation of superior hardware in terms of aircrafts, destroyers and nuclear weapons will not match the alarming hindrance of the people of military significance - the national lethargy. Indian armed forces cannot afford to nurture the feel-good-factor of its assumed might at the expense of ground realities.

The newly appointed Home Minister has put forward some proposals. But people are not convinced. Adding more layers of bureaucracy will not do the trick. India is already entangled the cobweb of lethargic bureaucracy at all levels; it does not need more.

Although the fixing of the problem is not easy, there is no better time than this at lease to make an attempt for that. The nation is still reeling from the bad experinec in Mumbai.

The uphill struggle faced by the defence authorities can be clearly seen in Tamilnadu. A section of politicians are engaged in internal activities of another country, completely ignoring the security risks faced by the state in particular and country in general.

The state police and the coast guard do not see eye to eye. For instance, they have different interpretations about the presence of boats with blood stains on the beach in Tamil Nadu. Islamic terrorist could have used this as ploy to pull wool over the eyes of the security apparatus while giving the impression of the arrival of wounded Tamil Tigers.

Petty-minded regional politicians with their own agenda to break up this great nation are doing what the islamic militants want by stealth.

Only people who can recognize this and deal with are the Indian Congress. If they are weak, the cohesion of this great nation may be at risk. The recent election result that kept the party ahead of their rival, BJP, indicates that the Indians have realized the great danger. Whether it will fix the issue is another matter.

    News:
SLA death toll hits 120, army pushed back to Malaiyaa'lapuram

The Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) officials told TamilNet correspondent in Vanni Thursday that the two-pronged SLA offensive on Ki'inochchi was pushed back Wednesday after heavy fighting in Puthumu'rippu in the west of Ki'linochchi and A'riviyal Nakar in the south. The final death toll of the SLA in both the fronts, according to the LTTE claim, was 120 killed in action and more than 280 wounded. Photographs given by the LTTE officials also indicated that there were some young recruits of the SLA among the dead. Meanwhile, the SLA, which admitted heavy fighting, has put the casualties at 20 SLA and 27 LTTE combatants as killed in the latest fighting.

On the other front, the SLA was pushed back from from A'riviyal Nakar to Malaiyaa'lapuram Wednesday night, according to the Tigers.

More than 25 dead bodies of the SLA were still lying in the no-go zone between the LTTE and SLA forces, the Tigers said.

Yes STF very well pointed !
We knew for years about this that these terrorists never did any thing for their people in the areas under their control and this is one of the reasons I have a Tamil friend who was disillusioned with these guys jumped ship 4 years ago and happily ever after.
I have been to their areas in and out as recently as last August and I don’t think much of them. If they are that great how come we haven’t seen anything modern, something worthwhile writing home about. These sole representatives are a bunch of rouges just as the politicians in the south, care less for his people.
My fear in this conflict is ever powerful Diaspora whose financial strength is growing because of the progressive environment of the developed countries that have nourished the abilities of the next generations and that new born generation with their sophistication is and with their new found wealth and relations with the host countries is no match for our unsophisticated simple Simons and equally corrupt system and it’s humble people. It if’s the duty of the politicians in power to put the house in order and be economically strong to meet this formidable enemy. I can see this difference between my people born here and other left behind. Knowing this fact I don’t bother to read or hear if VP is capture and whole of Vani is over run as this is not end of our problem but not even the beginning of the end.
It is time for our stupid leaders realize and without playing petty party politics get-together as a true national government and develop the country without stealing from that poor country.

  40. Lasantha Wickrematunga – the misguided media missile fired by Prabhakaran

"Just to make things plain to Wickrematunge, when Charles de Gaulle marched into Paris and reclaimed it from the Nazis he was not turning France into an occupied territory. He was liberating France from the alien forces illegally occupying French territory. In other words, when a legally constituted army of a nation regains control of its territory occupied by an illegal band of aliens or terrorists it is an affirmation of the internationally recognized borders that define territorial integrity and national sovereignty."

    Part 1

(December 12, Melbourne, Sri Lanka Guardian) The national and regional English media – particularly in India – pull no punches in targeting Tamil Tigers as the problem that should be removed from the political equation in Sri Lanka if peace is to be regained. The respected Hindu has been in the forefront with Editor, N. Ram, who has interacted with practically all the leading Indo-Sri Lankan actors, including Prabhakaran, taking an informed and principled stand against the counter-productive violence of the Tamil Tigers that has dragged the Tamils into the Pol Potist hell-hole in the Vanni.

He was joined recently by Malini Parasarathy, another expert Sri Lankan-watcher, who stunned the pro-Tiger lobby by branding Jaffna-centric politics with the taboo word: “Tamil chauvinism”. “Chauvinism” was an adjective reserved only to condemn the Sinhala-Buddhists. The bomb she dropped shook the foundations of the pro-Tiger lobby ensconced in NGO, think tanks, media, academia and my good friend, Tissaranee Gunasekara who never fails to open her articles with a foreign quote and end it with blaming the native “Sinhala chauvinists”. The shell-shocked Tamil extremists in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka are still trying to recover from its after effects. Tamil extremist in Tamil Nadu, manipulated by Tiger agents throwing money around as if it is going out of fashion, went to the extent of attacking the premises of The Hindu.

The Sri Lankan media, however, is fragmented on the role of Prabhakaran. At one end of the of the spectrum is Prabath Sahabandu, the Editor of The Island, whose perceptive analyses of confusing and fast-changing events of the national crisis provide a reliable guide to the emerging political landscape. He cuts through the miasmal fog coming out of the pipes of NGO mediocrities, all of whom are singing for their supper. He stands out among the pack because he is one of the few editors who has not fallen into the honey pots of NGOs. His leaders generally clear the air for an uncluttered view of what has happened and what is likely to happen in the on-going national crisis. His forthright, penetrating and thought-provoking surveys differ fundamentally from the gloom and doom of pundits thriving on the misery of the war-weary people. His no-nonsense comments, devoid of theoretical baloney, have been enlightening beacons to decipher and grasp the underlying realities of the broad anti-national fronts waging their mini and macro wars against Sri Lanka.

As for the state media, the less said about it the better it is for the state of the media. The newspapers produced by Lake House are as insipid as the editors. The Daily News had reverted to the usual format of a newspaper produced by a promoted chief clerk. Its soporific editorials hardly picked up the relevant issues of the day or went out to meet the challenges posed by the enemies of the people. Some of the editors have performed like mass produced dummies who can hardly read or write. In times of crises, conscientious editors step in as vigilant sentinels to guard the nation. They are remembered for making outstanding contributions to the people and not for receiving contributions from NGOs and other patrons. At Lake House the editors are prone to protect their chairs than the nation.

The latest appointee to the editorial chair of the Daily News is Jayatilleke de Silva, a former member of the Communist Party and a pro-NGO apparatchik. He is ideologically committed to the far left to be of any use to the Mahinda Chintanaya, though he will continue to swear allegiance and pose as a loyalist of the regime. There are several like him, mostly yes-men to the former President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, masquerading as born-again devotees of the Mahinda Chintanaya. The NGOs will be happy with Jayatilleke’s appointment because he is just the kind of Stalinist Commissar they need to censor the committed defenders of the nation on all fronts. The NGOs will be happy with this Stalinist stooge who will bend over backwards to promote anti-Mahinda Chintanaya ideologies which will be served in various disguises. Like all discredited Marxists he clings on to anti-Sinhala-Buddhist ideology and he is most likely to be the first to sabotage the system. He is also a pedestrian writer with hardly any flair for creative journalism. At best he can be described as a bleak Greek from the defunct left bringing suspicious gifts to the Mahinda Chintanaya.

  58. More bad news for LTTE barking DOGS
    New offensive divisions ready

Troops operating on the Wanni front are speedily approaching perimeters of the two Tiger strongholds Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, amidst stiff resistance from the LTTE as Army headquarters making arrangements to open more battle fronts in the Wanni liberation operation to exert more pressure on the LTTE now trapped within 800 square kilometres territory, Military sources told the Daily News yesterday.

According to Military sources Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka has made arrangements to form Task Force V, the ninth offensive Division to be deployed in the ongoing military operations against the LTTE.

The newly formed Task Force V, will come into operation after Task Force IV begins its operations in the Mullaitivu front at the end of this month, sources added.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said troops continued their offensive against the LTTE in Adampan, Akkarayankulam, Iranamadu and Mankulam North areas in Kilinochchi, causing heavy damages to the terrorists on Thursday. According to military sources, the 57 th Division now operating on the Kilinochchi front has reached towards the earth bund, which is considered to be the final obstacle before they overcome the de-facto Tiger administrative capital Kilinochchi.

The 57th Division troops who captured the strategically important Therumurikandy junction that links the Mannar Pooneryn on the A-32 road and Jaffna Kandy A-9 road via Akkarayankulam and Jeyapuram has further advanced from the East of A-9 road taking a Tiger training camp under their control by yesterday afternoon.

With this advance troops operating in the East of the A-9 road have also reached up to the final earth bund created by the LTTE covering the gateways to the Kilinochchi town.

“Troops are now poised to breach the final barricade to enter Kilinochchi town,” Military sources told the Daily News.

As troops of the 57 Division get ready to enter the outskirts of Kilinochchi, troops attached to the 59 Division too has made speedy advance towards Mullaitivu, considered to be the military stronghold of the LTTE. They are operating some eight to seven kilometres South of Mullaitivu.

Troops attached to 59 Division made speedy progress yesterday too after cutting off the Nedunkerni- Thanniyatti- Mulliyavali road, sources added.

”Troops of the 59 Division are fast moving towards Mullaitivu amidst stiff resistance from the LTTE”, a senior military official told the Daily News.

Meanwhile, Forces operating in the Mankulam North front has confirmed that two area leaders of the LTTE named Kabethovan and Mohiran were among the dead in battles on Thursday.

  61. The army is reaching difficult terrain and casualtiesa re going to mount. We knew this and the estimates were for far higher numbers than what is actual even now. This is where empowerment of operational commanders for decision making made most sense. Its succes has been taken to a level where the ordinary soldiers participate in make decisions and those have resulted in lesser casualties than would've resulted otherwide. The reason why the thrust continues is because of the successes in these areas.

The battles for Killinochchi town and once deep into Mullaitivu will be bloody. Whether extensive planning, training and other strategic measures will make much of a difference to the body count remains to be seen.
Yet the important thing to bear in mind is that the SLDF are able to rest, replenish and return to the battle within hours, while the LTTE is not. With depleted supplies, each attack the LTTE conducts draws down on its reserves, in particular irreplaceable man power, which the Army has plenty of.

  67. From "Rivira" Defence Column ( reliable)

    1. Army is very close of blocking A-34 between Oddusuddan and Mullathivu (700 m).

    2. Old Kandy Rd is blocked from both above and below of Karuppddamurippu (on A34).

    Tactically very important.

it is south-west of kili town. or in the axis of old kokavil and kiranchi.

  75. So in fact, the LTTE seems to have pushed the SLDF thrust to the western flank and relieved some pressure on the southern and eastern sides, eh?

That would mean the pincer movement that was sent up to drive the wedge upto Paranthan is now open to a flank attack on the Southern side. Or is it?

  80. Using the familiarity of the ground to their advantage, the Tigers virtually cornered the Seventh Light Infantry Regiment with a heavy rain of mortar and artillery fire. The regiment lost the lives of 22 of its men as a result, including 12 men who fell into Tiger hands. Another 30 soldiers were injured.Nation.lk

This is what I heard from another source too. Tigers used their familiarity of terrain to great advantage during that pudumurippu attack....

  87. Moshe,

Despite all these noise we hear from Killi and Paranthan, I think SLA is poised to repeat the same success that we had in the west coast, in the east as well.

Think of Oddusudan as Tunnukai or Mallavi. And Mulathiv as Vidathalathiv. Now that we have tested the strategy in one coast, a repeat would be ideal.

Best thinkg is to let the LTTP to hold Killi and Paranthan. Its best if we can get the LTTP holed into a jungle patch in Puthukudiyiruppu.

    1) Now they know our mighty 170k well trained army with sophisticated weppons is no match for their 1500 slipper worriers.

    2) They know TamilNUT gives them fales information and all articles are rubbish , lies , madeup & amature.

    3) Their only lifeline is ceasefire for so called "brave LTTP cadres fight until die"
(more like running for life) not on the card.

    4) 30years of elam dream is only a deram & they are begining to feel the reality.

  92. Guys, save this link- it has lots of good info for the phase 2 of this war.
Act now to curb the LTTE front organizations in Europe - Sri Lanka urged at the Europol seminar
Emphasising his theme "Time to Act", Ambassador Aryasinha cautioned that failure to take timely action to curb LTTE and front organization activity in Europe could have several ramifications: it could render the sacrifices being made on the ground to eradicate terrorism in Sri Lanka wasted and leave open the possibility for the renewal of the conflict; the loss of dominance of control in the Wanni could also result in the LTTE resorting to use greater pressure on the diaspora to continue funding the organization which is bound to intensify conflict within the diaspora with those who opt for peace and reconciliation, further networked and trained as they are, in order to survive, members of the LTTE are also likely to continue to engage in clandestine businesses or engage in criminal activities in their host countries

  93. An important reality has emerged from more than one year of fighting in the Wanni. That is the fact that the guerrillas have been able to so far, despite the shrinking terrain they hold, offer heavy resistance to the troops. To do so, it is no secret, that their supply lines through the high seas still remain intact. That is how they are able to replenish stocks to direct artillery and mortar fire at troops. This is how they are able to obtain ammunition for their assault rifles, machine guns and explosives for their improvised devices. Therefore it is not an over estimation to say the guerrilla threat still remains. They have lost large tracts of land but are yet to lose their military capability fully.

  94. On Sunday December 7, the security forces were within "kissing distance" of the outer defence lines Kilinochchi, announced the defence spokesman. On Monday, December 8, it became "Troops in Kilinochchi are targeting the town and they are in the vicinity of the town." However, by December 9 it seems the security forces' strategic focus had shifted from Kilinochchi to Mullaitivu according to the defence ministry. This contradicts what the army commander Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka said in his Sunday Observer interview on the same day; he said "after capturing Kilinochchi the security forces will definitely capture Mullaithivu...

In military parlance, this kind of shift in 24 hours takes place only in tactical rather than strategic focus. Somebody is not getting the terminology right or the army is facing major problems in turning the "kiss" into reality in Kilinochchi. Its two pronged offensive on Kilinochchi by Task Force-I from the west and by 57 Division from the southwest was reported facing very heavy LTTE resistance. Could this have compelled them a change in the security forces' strategy? The defence spokesman had acknowledged this at least on the Task Force-I front. In the Muhamalai sector also there appear to be no substantial progress in spite of 53 Division's claims of having captured 800 m long and 8 km wide line of defences there. All these bits put together would indicate stalling of offensive.

After the capture of Pooneryn on November 15, crossing Akkarayankulam bund on October 31, and capture of Mankulam on November 17, it is a month. Evidently since then, momentum of advance has been stalled due to adverse weather on a few days, and stiff LTTE resistance that had been progressively increasing. This would contradict repeated Sri Lankan assertion that the LTTE was on the run. If this is not so, what is holding up the troops?

  96. SLN troops assault fishermen, confiscate fishing pass in Jaffna lagoon

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) patrol troops from Oorkaavatturai (Kayts) assaulted more than 135 fishermen Friday and Saturday while they were fishing in Jaffna lagoon and confiscated their fishing 'pass' issued by the Sri Lankan military authorities, according to complaints made by them to fisheries societies. The SLN troops in their patrol boats attacked the fishermen with rifle butts and batons and sent them back to the shore, fishermen who wish to remain anonymous for fear of retribution said.

The fishermen attacked are from Paasaiyoor, Kurunakar and Kozhumpuththu'rai areas who had gone fishing in more than 75 boats.

SLA had issued fishing pass to them to fish from 6:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m daily using outboard motors on their boats for an unlimited distance from Jaffna shore up to Poonakari waters.

SLA had permitted day time fishing in Jaffna lagoon following the capture of Poonakari by the SLA.

The fishermen have appealed to their respective fisheries societies to help get back their fishing passes.

This indiscriminate attack by the SLN on fishermen who were allowed by the SLA to fish has caused discontent and anguish among the fishermen.

Exactly a similar thing happened this year with another high ranking police officer just only on a spot 50 feet away.STF guys were vigilant and he knew it and he couldn’t carry out what he had in mind saving us a lot of bother. There may be many others who will work for them for money.

  102. Apparently the LTTE pistol group infilterators operating in the Amparai area have adopted the tactic of walking on all four in the midst of buffalo herds to get past military patrols.

Compatibility of looks, body odor and intellect must make both feel comfortable in each other's company, since the village guards (gam-battas) are having a difficult time finding and shooting the gooks.

Once located, the gambattas apparently shoot these monkeys while still on all fours.
