Casualties in Kilali fighting

Fierce fighting erupted between the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) near Kilali/Muhamalai forward defence lines today (16th). Fighting erupted when troops from SLA’s 53 division moved ahead of their positions in a fresh attempt to storm LTTE’s second FDL in the national front. Around 30 SLA soldiers have been killed in the fighting and 10 more have gone missing. As of this moment, troops have fallen back to their original positions. First LTTE FDL in this area was captured by SLA on the 20th of November.

Meanwhile heavy fighting also raged in several locations in and around Kilinochchi. On some fronts, forces have moved in further past the LTTE built earth bund and there has been close quarters fighting going on inside buildings and other structures. SLA’s 57 and 58 divisions have been conducting the majority of these operations. The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), flew more than 16 air sorties targeting LTTE positions in Kilinochchi and Paranthan (earth bund included) in the past two days alone (13th and 14th).

  2. Thanks DN.
Army.lk tells that only one line of defence is available for enemy in National Front. It also says that troops have re-started atacking this evening. Meaning... the scores might change by tomorrow morning?
Defence.lk claims that at least 120 LTTE were killed. (Oh! god!...Please make it to at least 500 by tomorrow morning...).
Is this an attempt to attract more hard core LTTE carders to western and nothern fronts and make 59th divisions task easy?
Any update on Western front..? Anything interesting happening north of Alampil?

  3. I wondering whether we applied some MBRL based softening before advancing?

Else, we need to purchase few of these to breach the LTTE defences.

  7. Around 30 SLA soldiers have been killed in the fighting and 10 more have gone missing.

Seems indirect fire is the biggest killer. LTTE must've surely brought a few ship loads of ammo for them to last this long and have enough for "artillery duels"

The stretch of coastline they can smuggle all these stuff is shrinking by the day, and yet they still manage it.

  9. After the capture of Pooneryn on November 15, crossing Akkarayankulam bund on October 31, and capture of Mankulam on November 17, it is a month. Evidently since then, momentum of advance has been stalled due to adverse weather on a few days, and stiff LTTE resistance that had been progressively increasing. This would contradict repeated Sri Lankan assertion that the LTTE was on the run. If this is not so, what is holding up the troops?

  11. SLA suffers third debacle in Ki'linochchi, 100 killed, 250 wounded - Puleedevan

The Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) on Tuesday repulsed a major push by the Sri Lanka Army, killing at least 100 SLA soldiers and causing injuries to more than 250, said S. Puleedevan, the director of LTTE's Peace Secretariat, quoting Tiger commanders who were in charge of the Tiger defensive fronts in Ki'linochchi district. "According to the emerging details, a multi-front push towards Ki'linochchi from Malayaa'lapuram, Kugnchupparanthan, Mu'rika'ndi and Pulikku'lam, was repulsed by the LTTE defensive formations that have seized weapons and recovered at least 10 corpses of the Sri Lanka Army," Mr. Puleedevan told TamilNet citing the military officials of the LTTE.

"This is the third debacle of the SLA in Ki'linochchi district within the past few weeks," Puleedvan added.

Heavy fighting raged from 5:00 a.m. till the evening when the move was thwarted.

Two AK-LMGs, one PK-LMG and six T-56 assault rifles were among the weapons seized by the Tigers so far in the clearing mission which was going on, he said.

The Tigers were making arrangements to hand over the 18 dead bodies, 10 from Ki'linochchi and 8 from Ki'laali, through the ICRC, Puleedevan said.

Judging by the ferocity of the battles in the Killi ouskirts, which happen to be a kind of semi-urban warfare(like Baghdad),casualties are undoubtedly gonna rise..still not clear what went wrong in Kilaly,tho..seems the SLA got pushed back to their former FDL's,according to DW..

He has said that one of his fellow comrades were alive but had a bullet in the neck but regardless the SLA was ordered to throw him into the truck with the dead and only those consious with minor injuries are being sent to the hospitals.

This and other visual sources prove that claim of 25 is pure BS.

Tamilnet report of 100 is wrong as well. There may be anywhere up to nearly 150/160 killed. Wounded numbers are still uncertain though, but I bet it is over 200.

    Sri Lanka::
    * Pitch battles rage in Sri Lanka, 145 combatants killed
Tuesday, December 16, 2008, 14:01 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 16, Colombo: Sri Lankan troops and Tamil Tiger rebels fought pitch battles along the Kilinochchi battle front in Northern Sri Lanka today leaving 145 combatants dead, the military said.

In a multi-pronged offensive troops of Task Force 1 and 57 Division attacked LTTE positions on the LTTE built earth bund surrounding the rebels’ de facto capital of Kilinochchi gaining control over a 5 km stretch of the ditch west of Paranthan and Kilinochchi, Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.

At least 120 rebels killed and another 250 were injured killed in the clashes while 25 soldiers were killed and 10 more soldiers were reported missing, spokesman said. Another 160 soldiers have been injured.

Defence Ministry said heavy fighting broke out at the outskirts of Kilinochchi and Northern FDLs since early this morning as military offensive divisions commenced mounting artillery and heavy mortar attacks at identified Tiger locations.

Troops of 57 Division have entered the Chorikenkulam vilage located 7 km west of the A-9 main road and brought it under control pushing the rebels further into the jungles, defence reports said.

Troops of 53 Division meanwhile stormed Tiger defences ahead of the FDL in Kilali and Muhamalai villages Tuesday morning and tactically returned to their bases, defence officials reported.

However, the Tiger website TamilNet reported 40 soldiers were killed on the Kilali battle alone. After 9 hours of heavy fighting, the Army was forced to pull back its troops, with heavy casualties, it said.

It is not possible to verify casualty figures as reporters are restricted from the conflict areas.

WANNI: RETREATING Tiger terrorists, unable to tolerate Monday’s (15) loss of AMPAKAMAM areas received another beating Tuesday (16) evening at about 5.30 p.m. when they were moving about in a rear edge of the area.

16 Gajaba Regiment troops under 632 Brigade struck those pockets of Tiger terrorists giving a hard time for them. Later on troops recovered five dead terrorists and several LTTE items, including one Multi Purpose Machine Gun and three T-56 weapons from the confronted area. Among the dead were three LTTE women, the troops confirmed.

Since we have LTTE rats cornered in a reletive small area, now is the time to pull out all the stops. Let's drop napalm-B, also called "super napalm", on the rats. Napalm-B is a mixture of low-octane gasoline with benzene and polystyrene. We can easily manufacture this locally. Unlike conventional napalm, which burns for only 15–30 seconds, napalm B burns for up to 10 minutes with fewer fireballs, sticks better to surfaces, and offers improved destruction effects. All the better to roast these terrorists.

    Cheers!

  82. Athas and pro-LTTE sources have been predicting "another Jayasikkuru" for the last three years. In fact, LTTE has not managed to retake even one of the many areas they have lost despite numerous attempted counter-offensives. The firepower such as MBRLs of the army is now far to great for the LTTE. But let us hope they keep trying, it is far easier to cut them down in the open than when they are hiding in trenches.

  83. It is very sad to see the latest photos updated in tamilnet, we could see, there is a child soldier. I don't think he joined the Army to eradicate the terrorism. 84. Pro-ltte Nathira, spare us your false sympathies. The army does not use child soldiers or forcible conscription with torture of deserters unlike the ltte. Who certainly sacrifice and put their most inexperienced soldiers as a "speed bump" in the first line.

But you do have reason to be sorry this day and moment when the very best cadres of the ltte are now marching to and dying on VP's orders in the Kilinochchi killing grounds. Now facing tanks, commandos, and precisely directed artillery without an earth bund to protect and hide them.

as for the panic button pushers...these battles are not unexpected.in my article titled the war of attrition begins i mentioned that the last battle is to take place in and around paranthen elephant pass axis.the forces and the ltte know this.this is the last battle.and it cannot be expected without bitter battles.and yesterday was a 70% sucess interms of objectives.

the only miss was what happned in kilai.

the battle across paranthan EP sector is the last and battles worse than this are expected.

cpmments for the time being are reserved on what happened in irnamadu.you will read about in the coming days when the remaining obstacles are cleared.

  86. SF says some battles are raging around Iranamadu which he didn't comment.

Since LTTE had the advantage to defend we had to sacrifice these valient sons of the soil.

No way we should budge to the presure from Tamilnadu or India for that matter.

Let the SLA finish this one way or the other.

In the coming days LTTE will use some of their SAM's against the Mi-24's and fighter jets.

Moving those SAM's close to KAB and RAB cannot be ruled out either.

Time is ripe for another TAF raid.

    Please be ready.

  88. The Sri Lankan government's stinky cat is out of the bag!!
The long lingered suspicions about the SLA recruiting and employing child soldiers in war has now been confirmed and it is official now!
The LTTE have released a photo of a poor Sinhala child soldier who met his demise in Kilinochchi in the latest battle.
My thoughts are with the poor Sinhala parents who lost their children to the predatory SLA and GOSL. I wondered why everybody thought Mahinda Chinthanaya was so 'childish', now I know!! How sad!

  89. It is obvious that LTTE throwing hardcore fighters at this stage.
SLA utilized battle hardened commandos to capture vast area in Wanni since the war commenced. But it seems at this critical stage SLA throwing young fighters.
Coming days will predict whose tactics are superior.

  90. LTTE lot,

    I'm 28. I look 18/19.

My colleague is 25 and he gets asked for ID when he buys cigarettes (the age limit is 16 here in London)

A barrister colleague of ours is 42 but, she, too, is asked for ID when buying cigarettes.

So, even though it is possible an underaged boy could have joined the Army (it happens in the UK), i think this is far from the norm (i.e. not officially sanctioned). Unlike, say, for the LTTE where it is not just encouraged but forced upon the children (note recently the doscovery of upto 600 tamil children hiding in the malitivu jungles from the LTTE 'recruiters').

I also understand that LTTE leaders from the area level going right up to the top regularly take such underaged or 'willing' or 'unwilling' cadre (it's such a gray area in the Wanni, don't you know) to bed every night.

Some tamils are like the germans during the time of the Nazis; they will not know the true nature of the beast they professs to support until the war is over.

  91. Jet the jet petrol station toilet cleaner you are nothing but an ass hole.
Everything that comes out of you smells.

We can make Vanni in to a one mass tamil graveyard with a bit of help from SLAF & 1000kg bombs.Soon that will happen. So don't think your punday LTTE is big.
There is a saying that fish dies because of its mouth & so as you.
Keep dreaming about punday pee-lam while our army killing you,

Wouldn't it be better if you used the time to get your pecker fixed, instead of wasting your time online..

  93. SLG will need to keep the LTTE forces decentralized and spread far apart, [like Jet's wife's feet on my bed] to screw 'em plenty.

Just like Jet's wife, they keep coming back for more..

  94. Guys, don't let the sakkiliyas distract you from the reality.

There were some serious issues to overcome this year, most of which are already in the bag.

Tamilnadu - monkey circus is sitting around sniffing each other's crotch, after the Paki teenagers fcked 'em upside down.

Obama - gooks calling themselves TamilsforObama are currently an unending source of hilarity here in the US. Cannot elaborate further for now, but the gook train is chugging right up shit creek.

Adverse monsoonal weather conditions in Oct/Nov in Wanni - almost over in most areas. All clearing up nicely for heavy armour action and close air support.

EU - Trade concessions won again.

More to come - Economic and military aid, Investments in liberated areas, infra-structure projects island wide..

Endgame is near and no one is kidding.

  95. Vigilante

A 70% success is a win for the defender. But the fact is the SLA has both options; strategic and brute force to take the objective, with the ability to replenish its attacking force.

The LTTE may hold off today, and survive to fight another day. But as sure as hell, the ability of the SLA to adpat fast to any changes in the battle field will make the second day their last day on earth as well. So in some places, the second time may wll be the charm.

Let me also assure you that there will NOT be any difference in the way the SL issue is viewed by the US, even under the Obama administration.

The LTTE's best hope is Bruce Fein, who is a very fine lawyer and will win a seperate state for monkeys for the right price. The gooks haven't been able to cough up enough so far. Pro-eelamists should work second jobs and pay up more so that Mr.Fein becomes motivated...that's your last chance stinkymunkies..
