Army moves into Adampan town

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has moved into the Adampan town as of today (9th) morning. 2 soldiers were killed in the renewed fighting in this area while 7 more were wounded. Today's fighting followed the clashes yesterday during which the army secured another 2 square km area to the south of the town center. Adampan was under siege for many months by the army's Task Force One.

More than 20 LTTE cadres have been killed in this front during last two days fighting. Majority of the SLA casualties were caused by long range mortar fire by the LTTE.

  2. UNP: Adampan Town is not a big town and it's almost like a small "Sathi Polak" and a huge Jungle area around this Pola. Only 50 people lived in this adampan. Therefore this is a useless attempt by SLDF :p

LTTE: This is a tactical withdraw.. :p

Thanks for the update and consistently accurate reports. We often take this blog and your reporting in here for granted; mostly without any thanks or gratitude on our part. Please accept the sincere gratitude and appreciation of a thankful nation to your team.

  6. Defencenet, this is a time which we have to be very alert. LTTE will try to do something to satisfy their supporters who have being frustrated with this news.

I wonder if SLA will capture it again in 2018.

What i think is the colummn of troops advancing to adampan(from eastern side)via Andankulam(581 brigade) is still facing resistance but adampan was captured by the troop column moving from the south of admpan(583 brigade). Defencenet can u confirm this? of course only if it dosent reval any sensitive information also Is the 582 brigade coming from west of adampan still encountering resistance or have they reached adampan?

  40. sf-3 aka long ranger long time ago published an article "the seige of adampan".

indeed it was a seige according to available news.

guys, although we shun the fact that SLA won and lost Vanni in 1997-99, hopefully SLA has learnt the lesson.

Even the adampan capture didn't KILL enough terrorists. that worries me.

LTTE's WEAKEST POINT is its numbers, not its diasability to hold on to land.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well done SLDF!

    To all terrorists here,

You lot are pathetic. You say one thing today and without shame change it tomorrow.

Up to this point, you’ve said things like this:

    - Ah, we just left entire east as it is easier to launch a counter attack, we will capture it in a matter of days.
    - Madhu was not captured by SLA, no other news source has reported it apart from DN, this is a lie.
    - Oh well, we just "tactically withdrew" from Madhu, didn’t want to damage the church anyway.
    - SLA seems to be going backwards at Adampan.
    - SLA have gained 2 centimetres today at Adampan.
    - At this rate SLA will never capture Adampan.
    - Oh shit....what’s this about SLA in Adampan? We have to wait until TamilNUT claims DEFEAT.

Are you stupid or what? Soon a TV crew will be in Adampan and the whole world will see that it’s under SLA control

Your story in the future may go like this:

    - Viduthalthivu – no way jose..
    - Oh, we just withdrew Viduthalthivu, we are firmly trapping SLA in their graves.
    - And this trend will continue until SLA is firmly in control of all of Wanni.
    - Then you will say, the best way to get TE is to first to give it all to SLA and then kill each SLA in north and east simultaneously. We have to give it all to SLA because then SLA will have to commit more troops and it becomes easy for LTTE to kill them all in one go.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, we say hurrah!

Have you guys no shame? Why don’t you accept when you’ve been defeated?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Peccko the coolie with the little pecker,

"I'd actually like the SLA to settle well in this trap they are now in"

Tell us dumb ass, are you going to drive the SLA out of Jaffna first (liberated 13 years ago)? We have been waiting 13 years for you to surprise us with your trap.

How about the East? When is your grandma brigade making their airborne landings with the heavy lift aircraft from the "unknown" western country?

You coolies are so funny. Jokes aside, get back to cleaning the toilets. Those Canadians aren't paying you to entertain us.

  44. I think this is a much bigger strategic victory for SLA than Madu.

LTTE is trying hard to hold onto Mannar. They have sent thousands of cadres here.

SLA should dominate the whole area captured so far, not just mini camps.

Also continuos targetting of LTTE special units all over Wanni and spreading propaganda to tigers in Wanni appealing them to desert and promise of rewards if they do so.

    san,
yes; but that is acceptable as it avoided alot of damage which would otherwise have caused. i'm not ascribing to UNP thinking. but please understand LTTE's weakest point is its cadre strength and that is where we must hit HARD.

as long as it has enough cadres, it can come back. i liken this to the pre-tsunami effect where the sea moves far away from the beach only to throw back giant waves.

i'm also concern whether this has anything to do with the eastern election. remember the 2007 pre-budget debacle in muhamalai?

  52. 30 SLA killed, 5 bodies recovered, arms seized in Mannaar - LTTE
    [TamilNet, Friday, 09 May 2008, 07:53 GMT]
30 Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed, five dead bodies of SLA troops were recovered after heavy fighting at Ka'rukkaaykku'lam Friday morning, according to LTTE's Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan. Two PK Light Machine Guns, one AK LMG, five T-56 assault rifles and military hardware including ammunitions were seized by the Tigers. The SLA, while pulling back was towing an Armoured Personnel Carrier that had caught fire, the Tigers said. Ka'rukkaaykku'lam is located 2 km east of Adampan.

The Tigers had put up heavy resistance confronting the SLA in its attempt to advance with the support of air-attacks by the Sri Lanka Air Force and indirect fire using Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers (MBRL), artillery and mortar. The fighting which began at 5:30 a.m. ended around 8:00 a.m. when the SLA units were forced to retreat.

Arrangements were underway to handover the SLA dead bodies through the ICRC, the Tigers said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army claimed only 2 of their soldiers were killed in action, claiming that Adampan had been brought under their control. 15 Tigers were killed, the SLA claimed.

The pass office of the LTTE, during the CFA period, was located at Ka'rukkaaykku'lam.

Predictable response from LTTE: they take revenge for battlefield setbacks from the blood of the innocent civilians.

Whatever you say about the SL Government (with the despicable exception in 1983), they do not resort to such attacks against civilians. If you should be in any doubt, this is why the LTTE are not rebels but terrorists.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Guys,

Soldiers and officers alike are sacrificing their lives in the battlefront, while undergoing myriad of hardship, to help us or our offspring to live in peace.

Commanders who lead them work almost 24 hours to guide them in the right direction.

When this is the case in one part of the country, things that happen in some parts are just appalling, especially if the area in question is a Buddhist enclave, as claimed.

What is going on at the Ratnapura hospital is a case in point.

A strike by the doctors, triggered off by an alleged insult by a male nurse against a female doctor, has now taken a strange twist with nursers resorting to a strike.

This tug-of-war has resulted in the death of a few people that include some infants.

This is not an industrial action; it is a crime. Therefore, the culprits should be treated that way.

The government is about to bring in more legistaltion to control this trend. It is not going to work: it means more layers of bureaucracy. We already have enough of it.

I think people must take the law into their own hands in these situations.

The government in power is helpless, whether it is UNP or SLFP, to take these unions on.

However, that does not mean there is no solution. There is a solutions. It is prettey simple; turn the table on them. Let them have a taste of pain too.

One method of keeping them at bay is pelting these rascals/vehicles with stones and cover them with filthy graffiti. I know these medical rascals live in fear: they fear inflation, lack of income, kids going on wrong track, losing domestic servants etc. So, instilling fear in them is a sure way of controlling their vile acts.

The other is resorting to what is normally considered as superstious practices. These guys are scared of them too, of course in private. We know that in public they put a brave face on them.

So, smashing some clay kitchen utencils near their home will do the trick. They are scared of their impact to the core. I know how many of them are after astrologers and even Sai Baba.

If you guys don't agree with me, think about the famous Torching Bus phenomenon that takes place when an errant bus driver meets with an accident. There is a dramatic decline of accidents of that kind, because the driver knows his fate is in his legs if he is responsible for loss of life. It does work.

Let's encourage hapless ordinary folks who suffer at the hands of arrogant medical personnel, to extreme measures.

This is another stinking legacy left behind by socialists. The country battered by terrorism became a haven for such vile practises.

As soon as terrorism is over these union barons must be taken on with brutal force.

The monopoly and arrogance of state banks evaporated by the arrival of private banks. Likewise, these inflated elements in medical profession will find their right place in due course.

The end of terrorism will create the climate that is more conducive to root out other social evils.

Until then, the society leave the fate of innocent voiceless people at the mercy of karma.

Since you raised this issue of strikes in the health sector..Let me add this to the greater debate..

JVP influence on trade unions is being deluted by the internal conflict within that organisation.

If you have noticed, there were no student strikes called by the JVP lately.I remember sending JVP some letters in really colorful language criticising their use of university students in strikes. I am happy that JVP is dieing a slow death.

I don't see a big difference between JVP and LTTE. Their actions always hurts innocent people.

Because... because... because.... (take a deep breath) there's no guarantee from anyone... that bombs wouldn't go off... even if we offered Elaam on a platter to LTTE.

LTTE can only survive... (I mean extend their fast dwindling lifespan) only through these bombings.

So... our exit strategy is CRYSTAL clear... and would never need further analysis.

Kill the LTTE pigs to the last one...

Let's shed the petty differences and support the president, GOSL and SLDF in this very important mission.

LTTE has captured five bodies of soldiers who were isolated due to a miscommunication. Pro LTTE media have jumped in on the bandwagon and claimed SLA casualties as high as 30 dead which is not true.

Adampan town center is under the complete control of the army.

    [TamilNet, Friday, 09 May 2008, 21:40 GMT]
A troop carrier and supply ship of the Sri Lanka Navy, named A-520, was sunk by the Sea Tigers Black Tiger underwater naval commandos in the Trincomalee Harbour at 2:23 a.m. Saturday, according to initial reports by the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) officials in Vanni. The attack was carried out when the supply vessel was loaded with explosives to be transported to KKS Harbour in Jaffna, the Tigers said.

The attack was carried out by the commandos from Kangkai Amaran unit of the Sea Tigers.

The A520 supply ship and troop carrier has been engaged by the Sri Lanka Navy in its attacks against Tiger vessels in 2007.

The ship has lately been engaged in naval service between KKS and Trincomalee by the Sri Lanka Navy.

    'Ex-Invincible' sunk in Trincomalee Harbour

At approximately 2.15a.m., local time an under water explosion damaged and caused logistic vessel A-520(MV Invincible) to sink while moored at the Ashroff jetty in Trincomalee harbour, today (May 10).

No lives were lost due to the explosion.

A-520 was a merchant vessel built in 1970's and handed over to the Sri Lankan Navy, following a court order after it was apprehended while transporting 254 illegal migrants off Tangalle in 2003.

  137. Constantin Demiris,

You can be as sarcastic as you want but this type of arrogant/indifferent attitude is exactly what’s landed us in this mess in the first place.

This was just a logistics ship and no lives were lost, therefore, it's not that serious. I wouldn't go as far as calling for navy chief's resignation.

However, if I am to be realistic about this attack, then I'd say an enquiry should be held immediately. If somebody is guilty of negligence, then they should be punished.

The most serious point about this attack is LTTE's ability to infiltrate into the heart of SLN operations. This time it was a logistics vessel but next time it'll be a ship with 1000 troops in it.

So, rather than being sarcastic, we have to be ruthless in determining what went wrong.

On the other hand, if it was due to sheer brilliance of LTTE, then we need to study how they did it and adjust our defences accordingly.

    ReplyDelete
  138. ships like Sayura must be protected at all cost

  140. LTTE seems to be making use of the underwater demolitions training they got from Norwegian SF. I guess it's no use imagining the Navy had taken security measures against divers, seeing how even the country's air defences are not yet ready.

I think Parakrama is right. When we suffer losses we shouldn't try to cover it up with bullcrap, but we should learn from it. It's no use saying we killed the diver after he sunk the SLNS Sayura..... This is not like the planes, it's a real threat.

    ReplyDelete
  141. "I guess it's no use imagining the Navy had taken security measures against divers,"

Navy spokesman Cmdr. D.K.P. Dassanayake says the rebels attacked the cargo ship with an underwater explosion at about 2:15 a.m. He says the 213-foot (65-meter) vessel was empty.

looks like there is no "TAKARAN" on board

    LOL !

    ReplyDelete
  144. Does it matter now whether the vessel was full of takaran or explosives or piduru or whatever? (Though of course if it was explosives, the situation would be more grave) The thing that's important now is that they managed to carry out a successful underwater demolition. Next time it can be an explosive filled vessel as well. It's about time we dropped our 'we are so better than them and they can't do anything right' attitude and start learning from our past mistakes to avoid such blunders again. Naturally the pro-LTTE media will start shouting about this for weeks, but we got bigger problems than that now.

It looks like the ship was docked in a civilian are not in the high security zone where u have all the underwater sonar systems etc. So we can't exactly say it is a successful operation by ltte. Apparently they have done this to cover up their lost of Adampan and to get some attention from the Diaspora. I agree with you on what you said about our security loopholes but what I was trying to explain is that how ltte is trying to nice stories about such an incident. Anyway we should expand our coastal security a bit more..
