Reports of LTTE aircraft destruction unverified

There have been several news stories in both printed and electronic media regarding the alleged shootdown of an LTTE aircraft by the army. According to our sources, no confirmation has yet been received regarding the destruction of any LTTE aircraft.

However it is true that two LTTE aircraft were airborne for a brief period of time yesterday (16th) night, for an unknown purpose. These were detected by the SLAF radars and two F-7G interceptors were deployed immediately after the detection. LTTE runway at Iranamadu was attacked by SLAF bombers (Both Kfir and Mig27 aircraft) moments after the aircraft disappeared from the radar.

It is after this bombing the pilots observed an odd fire in the runway which has lead to the speculation of an aircraft being destroyed while on the ground. However we would like to emphasize the fact that mere observation of a fire is not adequate proof of destruction of the aircraft. For example, the same effect would have occurred had the bombs hit a vehicle parked near the runway.

  1. DN,

I don't post often but I have read this blog everyday for the last few years so I know the problems you're having with these stupid LTTE idiot infestation.

Anyway if you have the time can you please update us on the palampiddy situation.

  2. DN,
couldnt this be a trap for the future? So tht jst get an aircraft up there & make SLAF crafts comming in to the iranamadu runaway, Get all your SAMs & other things ready & try to get one down? The chances of a hit would be greater... isnt it?
& whts the situation in Palampiddy?

  3. what I mean is, what is the significance of palampiddi? Was that like one of their major strongholds or are we just setting up for a bigger movement into veduthaltivu or something? Please don't answer me if this is sensitive information.

Also, Is it possible to post a map with the current FDL positions drawn on them. Try and put one on here when you have the time. thanks.

Most of Palampiddi, including the Palampiddi junction is in SLA hands now. They have recovered 12 tigers bodies after fighting in this area today.

Afte Palampiddi, troops will move towards Periyamadu.

  6. Whatever caught fire... it's good to see SLAF is alert to the threat and that the respnse time is improving. Su makes a valid point, I gather that the Kfirs and Migs have sufficient measures to counter th type of SAMs in LTTE hands, but unsure about the relatively recent chinese acquired interceptors.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure the migs and kfirs have flares and sheer velocity to avoid the SAM's but the F7's could be easily lured into SAM fiasco.

I hope they are ready for this type of eventuality.

When I saw that, I just had switch gears and cut the filthy gook down to size.

One of the reasons why we are in this mess today, in my view, is that we have not retaliated with equal or greater force when the LTTE MFs attacked us – be it in the battlefield, in the cities, or even in the printed media for that matter. I for one go by the philosophy “two eyes for an eye” and I agree that philosophy is not palatable to everyone.

Sorry to digress from other discourse here…

    Very true.

In addition, I was told by an "authoritative source" in the SLAF that SLAF is well aware of LTTE's usage of decoy/dummies to entice bombing of LTTE targets that are really empty or valueless. The ruse is to get SLAF to expend exorbitantly costly PGMs or other munitions and thereby escalate the war-cost to the GOSL.

Now evidently, SLAF is on top this I am told…

  12. Asithri,

The 'eye for an eye' reaction - or, in other words, an OVER reaction - is what the LTTE lot (both here and elsewhere) are banking on. Simply put, it makes them feel they still have a cause to fight and spurs them on, when, in truth, they haven't had a cause for a very long time.

    Ga,

Notice the LTTE aircrafts went off radar pretty quickly after the interceptors took off on both of the last two occassions. Clearly the pilots are being relayed info from spotters at Katunayake. Need to have some sort of credible interception capability closer to the LTTE airstrips.

The best bet would be to station a few F7's in anuradhapura (if this isn't being done already). To be honest, if we get the LRRP to infiltrate deep into wanni, taking them out on the ground could either be done by the LRRP themselves or they could easily call in a SLAF bomber and provide them with GPS coordinates.

  14. DefenceNet,

I assume that the HISAR was up looking at what is goin on in Iranamadu at that time. If so, HISAR could have detected if it was an aircraft of a land vehicle.

[Simply put, it makes them feel they still have a cause to fight and spurs them on]

If you mean that our stern reaction to their “misdeeds” is giving them a “cause” to fight on, then I am not in agreement and frankly, am confused.

To begin with, they did the “misdeed” in the first place because they believed they had a passionate cause and I fail to see what we say or do in response to their “misdeed” can re-provide them that “cause” or even strengthen it.

What we need to keep in mind is that cultists (which is what the LTTE is today – a cult) don’t need any external help to reinforce the belief that they have a “cause.”

As for the actual battlefield implications…if our stern responses to their “misdeeds” did just that (i.e. pumped them even more to fight)…

Now would that not be a good thing? I think we would rather have these racist gooks fight it out now and allow us to finish them off – with extreme prejudice I might add – rather than giving them the respite to lie low and pick up the fight another day – perhaps at a time when SL is under a weak leadership like for example under Ranil the Pansy?

As Sarath Fonseka said, our strategy now is to draw out terrorists and “effect a Maximum Kill on them” and so far that strategy has paid off very well.

LNP actually has become an instrument for hardcore LTTErs to prop up the sagging morale of the Diaspora (other LNP SL Tamil members) when things go wrong for the LTTE (and that’s been the case mostly since early 2006) and assure those much valued contributions from the Diaspora keeps coming to the LTTE’s war-chest.

  37. Very important observation.

"Alertness is at the optimum in the first few days of the week. The other reason for strikes by the LTTE on Friday and Saturday is to get maximum mileage in the weekend newspapers.

Those assassinated on Fridays include former National Security Minister Lalith Athulathmudali (April 23, 1993) and former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar (August 12, 2005). The assassination attempts on President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse ((December 1, 2006) were also on Friday.

Those assassinated on Saturday include Minister of State for Defence Ranjan Wijeratne (March 2, 1991), President Ranasinghe Premadasa (May 01, 1993) and Brigadiers Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Vijaya Wimalaratne and Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha on August 8, 1992."

but what i observed was, LTTE suicide bombers, parcel bombers are THERE in colombo in a sizable number that AT VERY SHORT NOTICE they spin into action.

nolimit, piliyandala, around the Independace Day, last week, etc. are planned to look like "retaliation" to LTTE defeats in the north.

this is VERY DANGEROUS. this can make political statements to a LARGE and powerful sakkili ordience of "anti-war" idiots. had LTTE bombs gone off more than a week later, their significance would heve been greatly reduced.

This will only spoil the quality and the standard of the postings eventually leading to some people we need in here leaving ecause the racial comments and hate words wouldn't be worth reading or writing. Please realise that not everyone enjoys racism and racist comments unbecoming of patriots.

  45. Guys,

If Iqbal Athas column does not appear for two consecutive weeks, due to threats, so be it.

I never read that column; nor do I take seriously the selective quotes I see here, from time to time. Athas personofies pessimism and anarchy.

Athas is in the habit of disproportionately glorifying the 'achievements' of terrorists at the expense of the legitimate armed forces. If that brand of journalism is conducted in America or a west European nation, he brings himself closer to being prosecuted - for being treacherous.

After 9/11, even most liberal nations on this planet thought twice of the existing freedom that can easily be exploited in the name of freedom of speech by 'nuts' and took remedial measures. So, there is very little room for manourver now for journalists of Athas calibre, in those nations too.

For instance, if he writes about the military matters of the United Kingdom, in England, he risks a lengthy jail sentence for divulging vital state secrets; he may get a not-so-gentle touch on his genitals by his potential inmates as well.

Athas is lucky to get away with a threat, no matter, however much it is inflated.

Athas is just a member of a pack who are collectively bent on furthering their careers and earnings too.

Wolves hunt in packs for food - for mere survival. The league of journalists that Athas represents models that in human world to appease political allegiance and greed.

Sensible people don't need the brain of Einstein to make out which species is the better!!!

Why do some of us behave in an outrageously unpatriotic manner?

Since we live in a time of decoding the human genome, our genetic make-up, we are nearer to have a crack at this puzzle than any other time in the past.

If biologists trace it back to a special gene, it must be named the bastard gene.

Then a simple blood test must be made compulsory before applying for a passport.

Athas and the equals will then automatically become journalists without borders. There will be no need of seeking membership of that organization - for a fee.

It is a beautiful summer morning in the western Europe where I live in. Inspired by by cool fresh air and corresponding picturesque landscape, I close my eyes and take a flight of fancy, 2000 years backwards in my mind's eye, until the time of Christ in the Holy Land and see Iqbal Athas on a cross among criminals.

He is exposed in the scorching sun, but the cross can't bear him as gravity has other plans for him, thanks to his over-weight.

He comes down in a heap without a trace of glory and hits the bottom on a rock.

I really wonder why the great Allah(pbuh) created this mass of flesh in that little island. May be he had other plans for him. A punch bag will be a good alternative.

  47. Folks,

As someone said, LNP is a wheel in the fund raising and brain washing machine of the LTTE.

All discussions are subtly organised towards the division of Sri Lankan people on ethnic or religious lines. Tamils who are for a united SL are struck off by the moderator, only LTTE Tamils are allowed audience.

However, it is a place where we can see the extent of the LTTE racism, a racism ingrained to them by the Brit colonials according to the divide and rule policy. If we had promoted the Sri Lankan identity since independence instead of talking about Singhala Nation, Tamil Nation, Muslim Nation etc we would not be in this ignominious quagmire. There should be only one Nation in the island, the Sri Lankan Nation.

Since non-sri lankan readers who are interested in SL, may be misled to believe these bands of manipulators, it is necessary to neutralise them once in a while by exposing pure facts.

  50. Perspectives…perspectives

This blog is not regulated in the art or manner of delivery of responses and as such, asking and expecting only one side (i.e. the anti-LTTE side) to “ignore and not respond” will make this blog become yet another hardcore LTTE site and then that surely will see the demise of this blog (as most SL patriots would leave as the expectation is “thou shalt ignore and not respond”) I myself would vacate tout de suite as just as I don’t visit LTTE hardcore sites elsewhere, then I would not want to visit this site either. This, to me, this is the real “long term damage risk” and not any other cockamamie angle that has been presented thus far by some self-appointed gurus who pontificate a stance of “ignore and not respond.” NOTE: DefenseNet, I do not include you in this category as I fully understand you hold the inalienable prerogative to offer such advice as you see fit.

I for one respond quite frequently in AsianTribune and there the responses are strictly controlled by a moderator and one is expected to stay within a decorum in the art and manner of responding and that rule is evenhandedly applied to both anti and pro LTTE contributors. Any repeat violator’s account is deleted forthwith. However, in this blog DefenseNet does not have that ability and to only allow LTTE agents to post as merrily and in any art and manner that they wish, in my view, would be inviting certain death of the blog as aforenoted (well, not really as the LTTE agents would be virtually running this blog having a hay day, posting their garbage with unmitigated glee).

As such, such pontifications in my view are no different to RanilW asking SLA soldiers to not retaliate even when LTTE cadres used to come right up to them at FDLs and spit in their face and just walk away! The expectation there too was if SLA chose to “ignore and not respond” then everything will be alright eventually!

Therefore, for my part, I too cannot help wonder about the sincerity of these “ignore and not respond” pontificators as I too have a hard time believing that such advice is given in the best interest of MotherLanka and not to strengthen the propaganda hand of the LTTE!

  54. More (and final) on perspectives….perspectives

I see there is a plea herein, occasional but can be frequent at times, asking bloggers to “ignore and do not respond to LTTE posts” and I am seriously questioning the prudence of this advice and have elaborated so in my earlier post.

Herein, I will dwell into some part of the recent history to set further context to my earlier post.

After the LTTE terrorism progressed from strength to strength post-July 1983, one of the key energizers for that progress was the unchallenged free-hand the LTTE agents abroad had in only publishing their view (i.e. “genocide by the Sinhalese of a tiny Tamil minority, an exotic minority not unlike the Mayans of Amazon that is at near extinct on this planet, and hence the World must come to the rescue etc. etc.).

This freehand in propagating their falsehood continued unabated as there was not any substantively dissenting voice abroad from the rest of Sri Lankan expatriate community (with minor exceptions). The Tamils had largely bought into the “thamileelam” cry lock stock and barrel and the Sinhelas were simply not interested (again, except for a small segment) as they saw it as the GOSL’s problem.

As such, in this climate, the LTTE agents not only got the exclusive ear of the major western media, but they very surreptitiously invaded every nook and cranny of those societies to get their falsehood widely published. They even “invaded” the local community news papers, church publications, NGO bulletins, etc. as there was no dissenting voice.

Simply speaking, the rest of the SL expatriate population had chosen to “ignore and not respond.” What a marvelous bonanza this was for the LTTE…yes, this was too good to be true and I am sure even the LTTE agents were surprised at their good fortune!

Well, things did not stay that way for too long as some Tamils themselves became disenchanted with the LTTE’s version of “thamil liberation” and started voicing their own opinions and even the Sinhelas woke from their long slumber and started liberally contributing counterpoints. Especially, the wide use of the Internet as a medium for news broadcasts and info sharing helped “other perspectives” to get published as well, much to the dismay of the LTTE.

Today, largely speaking LTTE’s monopoly of the world’s news/info media has been done away with. There are many contributors from the Sinhela and Tamil and even Muslim communities today contributing to various media instruments, strongly and convincingly challenging the LTTE’s version of the issue.

Now a word on the “art of responding” that some of you here constantly pontificate to others. This site is a site for discussion of military matters but often the discussion cannot but take an ethno/political/military flavor given the very nature of the conflict. Military strategy is not all about the armor or munitions or about the stress-bearing of nuts & bolts in a MBT, but most decidedly about leadership too. And being a democracy, SL’s political leadership is as much relevant to this military discussion as the supreme commander of the armed force of the nation is none other than the President himself.

The point being made here is that this is not a site for dabbling in the Shakespearean or religious doctrines where one expects the nicest of the niceties, but given the very nature of the main topic (call it what one may, but it is still about effective killing of your enemy and not be killed) and the sub-topics, and the level of contentiousness they often rise to, the expectation around art and manner of postings in my view should be somewhat different herein – especially when this is not a regulated site and LTTE agents do come in here and post the most vile falsehood in the most vile language.

The monks have had no contribution towards the terrorism issue in Sri Lanka.
That is purely based on the tamil extremists' inability to integrate into any social order other than one in which mayhem rules. Case in point; continuing internecine violence that has shrunk the sL tamil population to the threshold of disappearance within one more generation.
The only reason why this problem remains until today is because none of the pevious govt's made a genuine effort to eradicate it. Each had its head stuck in its own ass or someone else', which contributed to the strenghthening of the desease which has decimated the tamil community.

  89. The reason why Athas' artciel are no longer missed is because, unlike in earlier years when the majority English reading elitist Sinhalese were more for a negotiated settlement, today their perspective has completely changed. [It was a time when a certain Colombo based group voted Velu as the 'man of the decade' or some such thing.] And there was greater danger to anyone who reported against the govt during teh Premadasa era than now.

The reason for Athas' articles appearing with less frequency is purely due to its accuracy becoming less dependable as he has proven to be a victim (?) of mis-information fed by disenchanted individuals within the armed forces. There's also other, more effective defence writers who seem to arrive at their conclusions thru more dependable resources.

Wars do bad things to civil society, dissemination of the truth being one of those. Nevertheless, Athas' column is not one of those. He's just another 'has been' disappearing into the mists of time.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I found this article on Defence.lk re. Athas;
    http://www.defence.lk/new.asp?fname=20080509_09

Contrary to its complete denial, I once knew a certain SLAF official who did in fact intimidate Athas, many years ago. This individual later lost his job. [He did escape retribution until his Commander at the time changed and the subsequent allowed investigations to continue. Justice delayed is deemed justice denied, but better late than never.]

    ReplyDelete
  91. Another reason for athass's decline is that most of those who read his stuff has access to the internet which provides uptodate info. his STRONG PRO-LTTE stance has made him untruthful. some of his claims contradict the ground realities.

to some extent he is trying to maintain his losing populatiry by prejecting himself as a "victim" of the "MoD" for supposedly "telling the truth". this also has failed now.

if MoD is faster, a little bit more accurate and do not make embarassing BS like the destroyed/damaged nonsense after the AAB attack, figures like athass will become less important.

    ReplyDelete
  92. patriots,

although this nonsense that the jeyanthan brigade is regrouping, etc. is hillarious, there is a hint of truth in it. it means SOME LTTE units unseen for some time are getting ready to launch attacks.

the problem lies in our strategy. we have not actively sought to destroy LTTE "elite" units. in addition to the geographical warfare, SLDFs should start LOOKING FOR LTTE capabilities and destroy them.

there is no point in grabbing land killing lower level cadres (of course they must be killed) while allowing their "elites" to survive.

out of the four battlefronts, the highest active is the mannar front. but this is the LEAST IMPORTANT for the LTTE compared to muhamalai and welioya. the present "dutugamunu" strategy of first attacking areas that can be relatively easily attacked is not going to work. WE HAVE TO ENGAGE LTTE "ELITE" UNITS SOON AT THE TIMES WE DECIDE (NOT THEM).

an operation with the potential of easily bringing mulaitivu and killi. within the target range of further military action will force the LTTE to respond with all their might. ALL LTTE infrastructure is in these two areas; these cannot be moved elsewhere.

Tigers locate 6 SLA bodies, seize weapons, heavy fighting in Mannaar
    [TamilNet, Monday, 19 May 2008, 05:35 GMT]
The Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) on Sunday thwarted a ground movement launched by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) from Irungka'ndalku'lam towards Va'n'naaku'lam in Mannaar claiming that at least 26 SLA soldiers were killed in the fighting and that more than 50 SLA soldiers were wounded. The Tigers have located 6 dead bodies of the SLA soldiers in the clearing mission. Two Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers and six T-56 assault rifles were among the weapons seized by the Tigers. Three Tiger fighters were killed in action, according to the LTTE officials in Vanni.

The fighting backed by heavy artillery, Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher and mortar fire was launched by the SLA at 5:00 a.m. and lasted till 11:00 a.m.

Two RPGs, six T-56 assault rifltes, 8 RPG shells and propellers, sixty-one magazines, forty-eight hand grenades, two RPD LMG barrels, 6,985 rounds, 1,885 RPD linked-rounds, one Claymore mine and several military accessories were seized in the clearing mission that continued until Sunday night.

3 SLA bodies were located in the day time and 3 more during the clearing mission Monday night, the Tigers said.

In the meantime, the SLA opened another front towards Va'n'naaku'lam from Karungka'ndal Sunday night. Heavy fighting was continuing Monday morning amid artillery and mortar barrage from the SLA, the LTTE officials further said.

The truth that you have such a 'motta' brain must have hurt him big time :P

    ReplyDelete
  114. mottapala,

Please don't bring issues such as genetics into this discussion. If you do, then we get into a whole new discussion about which race is superior to which. We should be way past this point at this stage. Simply speaking, you cannot say one race is superior to another on genetic terms. This is for few reasons:

    1. In any gene pool, you have (under normal circumstances) a Gaussian distribution of fitness. This means that you have some very fit individuals along with some not-so-fit ones. This is what we call "variation" and this is what makes evolution such a success.

    2. Fitness function depends on circumstances. In harsh environments, this may be an individuals endurance. In other environments, it could be something else (e.g. intellectual capacity). The point is that there is no universal fitness value that can be used to compare different gene pools.

    3. In any case, fitness is something that humans have defined so invariably it is subjective.

    4. Variations in the genome of different human races are not that significant. If we were significantly different, then we would not be able to have mixed race children!

    5. More than pure genetics, culture & other circumstances such as climate have contributed to varying degrees of success (which again is hugely subjective) amongst different races.

    6. Superiority cannot be quantified, therefore, it cannot be applied in a scientific way.

So, simply speaking, it cannot be proved that one race is superior to another based on genetics.

My personal belief (this probably will touch a lot of raw nerves on both sides!) is that Sinhalese & Tamils who live in Sri Lanka are not that different! Our history and culture are mixed to such an extent that sometimes it’s hard to tell the different. Even on a genetic level, sharing such a small island for over 2000 years would have resulted in a heavy exchange of genetic material.

The only way for Sri Lanka is for us to accept that we are all Sri Lankans irrespective of race, religion, caste etc. and concentrate on developing Sri Lanka.

Well, that's my point of view anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Bhairav,

    ReplyDelete
  117. Parakrama

You are forgetting that the present violence is due to the same reason; the incomprehensible racist attitudes of a section of Tamils.
It doesn't stop in Sri Lanka. There are a large number of cases filed by Sri Lankan tamils against the government of Australia, alleging racism. It is a perceptual problem, hardwired into some of these guys' DNA.

    ReplyDelete
  118. TropicalStorm,

I agree there is a problem with the perceptions of some Tamils but I don't think it has anything to do with DNA. I think it's psychological.

The reason for this behaviour is that every Tamil person is yearning for a country where majority is Tamil, at least at a subconscious level.

Tamil politicians and lunatics alike have recognised this issue and they are manipulating it. Unfortunately, the biggest lunatic turned out to be a product of Sri Lanka!

Racism exists everywhere, in Sri Lanka, in USA, in Europe, in Australia, everywhere! It's how we deal with the issue that matters.

The fact that racism exists does not entitle a minority to ask for a separate country. If every minority who wanted their own country had their way, then there would be total anarchy!

This attitude of some Tamils is completely a psychological phenomenon and politicians and lunatics are exploiting it to the max.

It is up to us Sri Lankans to find a solution to the problem. Inevitably, this solution will include some power sharing with Tamils and then teaching both populations to respect and trust each other. Finishing the war is a big task, however, achieving lasting peace is going to be a monumental one considering the fact that there are many lunatics around world including the fat one in Kilinocchchi!

  119. Fully agree with Parakrama. Chelvanagam can be identified as the father of modern tamil racism.

  120. Statement From The Carter Center on Upcoming
    U.N. Human Rights Council Elections

The Carter Center calls on the General Assembly not to re-elect Sri Lanka to the Human Rights Council in the upcoming Council elections. Recently adopted reforms of the former Commission on Human Rights, including competitive elections, call for the conduct of a government to be a factor in whether it is selected for a seat on the Council.

In a March 5, 2006, New York Times opinion piece on the establishment of the Council, five Nobel Laureates, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, wrote, "With these new procedures and the articulation for the first time of standards for membership, we believe the new body will be led by countries with a greater commitment to human rights." The expectation was that governments submitting their candidacies would be judged on their performance on human rights issues as a test of willingness to tackle tough problems and to assess honestly human rights violations wherever they occur.

Political resolve to abide by the new provision will be tested in the coming round of election to the Council's membership. Will candidates be judged by their peers on the basis of their commitments to improve human rights conditions in their countries? There must be no return to the old habit whereby regional blocs would offer uncontested slates for election, during which the merits of any country's particular qualifications for membership were never questioned.

Six countries -- Bahrain, Japan, Pakistan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Timor Leste – are competing for four open seats in the Asian Group of U.N. member states. The Carter Center urges delegations to support the candidacies of Bahrain, Japan, Pakistan, South Korea, and Timor Leste because these governments have demonstrated a greater commitment than has Sri Lanka to the advancement of human rights. However, numerous nongovernmental groups have raised concerns about Sri-Lanka's candidacy due to the country's deteriorating human rights record since its first election to the Council in 2006. For example, Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of enforced disappearances in the world, with little or no discernable commitment to accountability.

To re-elect states with deteriorating human rights records would undermine the Council at a time when it should be taking steps to shore its credibility as the principle platform for addressing human rights violations.

It is our hope that by electing states that demonstrate through their actions a commitment to furthering human rights, the Council will become a more courageous and united voice on behalf of victims of human rights violations

95% of them are Brahmins and there is nothing strange about it since Brahmins are trained in intellectual quest from the day of birth. Most of the Brahmins migrated to the South when there were turmoils in the North from 8th century onwards.

However, the jealous pure race Tamils discriminate against them in India.

  131. Third nobel laureate opposes Sri Lanka's bid to UN Rights Council
    [TamilNet, Tuesday, 20 May 2008, 10:52 GMT]
Following objections filed by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and South African Archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu, against selection of Sri Lanka to U.N.'s Human Rights Council, a third nobel peace laureate, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, from Argentina, in a commentary published by Página 12 in Buenos Aires, "compared the routine torture and the hundreds of 'disappearances' and extrajudicial killings committed by Sri Lankan government forces to the 'dirty wars' waged by various Latin American governments against their own citizens in the 1970s and 1980s," a press release issued by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) said.

    Adolfo Pérez Esquivel
Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, winner of Nobel Peace prize 1980
“As Latin Americans know all too well, there are few crimes more horrible for a government to commit than summarily removing its own citizens from their homes and families, often late at night, never to be heard from again,” declared Esquivel, the report said.

“Latin American governments can do a great service to the people of Sri Lanka by rejecting their government’s candidacy for the Human Rights Council,” the report added.

The Nobel laureates added their voices to the Sri Lankan and international campaigns against the re-election of Sri Lanka to the council. Human rights organizations within Sri Lanka urged UN members to “hold the Sri Lankan government accountable for the grave state of human rights abuse in the country” by rejecting its candidacy, observing it “has used its membership of the Human Rights Council to protect itself from scrutiny," the release further said.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch (HRW), a New York based rights watchdog, in a press release said: "The Nobel laureates added their voices to the Sri Lankan and international campaigns against the re-election of Sri Lanka to the council. Human rights organizations within Sri Lanka urged UN members to “hold the Sri Lankan government accountable for the grave state of human rights abuse in the country” by rejecting its candidacy, observing it “has used its membership of the Human Rights Council to protect itself from scrutiny.” "

Esquivel won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980 for his opposition to the “disappearances,” extrajudicial killings, and torture used by the military government of Argentina in combating domestic terrorists.

Elections to the 47-member council, the United Nations’ leading human rights body, will be held in New York on May 21, 2008. Six candidates – Bahrain, Japan, Pakistan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Timor Leste – are running for four seats allocated to Asian states. Council members are required to “uphold the highest standards” of human rights and “fully cooperate” with the council.

  158. Guys, Guys,
You shouldn't say such naughty things when a great man is dead.

I whole heartedly salute Commander, Brigadier General Balraj for all services he rendered to Mother Sri Lanka. May he rest in peace.

He recognised the tamil aspirations, esp. that of lower cast. He gave them liberation, by giving them a gun, so that they were higher than Brahmins. They gave them recognition which they didn't have even their own vilages. His carefully thoghtout longterm strategy wiped out all the educated, intelligent tamils which could have been an hindrence to the poor low cast tamil boys. He destroyed the opportunities of education from the Brahmin children who would have gained the maximum out of minimum. The lower cast LTTE supporters would have wasted it anyway.
Then his charisma attracted thousands of low IQ tamils boys to this great organisation, and marched them to death.

I think he has served mother Lanka even more than Kobbakaduwa did.

    Pecko,

Wasn't the guy, Balraj, reason for 300+ LTTE cadres, most of them were female, were boxed and killed within few hours in the failed attempt to take over the SLA base in Mannar or Mullaitivu, I'm not sure about the place, but it happened in the mid 90s. That was the most successful mass killing against LTTE by SLA in any Eelam war. After that he was in the dog house for some time.

I may mistake Banu for Balraj, please correct me. I'm not undermining the achievements of Balraj but it's not possible without the sacrifices of many unsung heroes from the lower level cadres.

You terrorist friends can’t bomb everyone, as likes of us will come out of the ashes to continue the just struggle against terrorists from any quarter, until they are brought to justice. People like us will never compromise with thugs and terrorists and we will never reward them with titles and posts in the administration. Your terrorist friends seem to get a lot of comfort from the Irish terrorists the IRA,the bed fellows of the tigers, hoping they have got off the hook by getting into politics in UK,but unfortunately for them the past crimes are now catching up with them. Today the authorities here have arrested an ex IRA man for murdering a former SAS officer Lt Robert Narake, because unlike in SL,life of any human is too precious to ignore when lost in a criminal manner.Srilanka still hasn’t come up to our civilized standards and that’s why loss of life is regarded so lightly in that island.

Peter once gave me a definition of terrorism and by his own definition, LTTE did over-qualify as terrorists.

That is the reason why we are having some troubles in Sri Lanka.

What the hell are you doing here begging us for a separate state? Go to Wanni and fight for it if you want it that bad cos pretty soon, you'll have nothing to fight for!
