A VVIP transport helicopter (Bell 412) was forced to perform an emergency landing in Ampara today, when it ran out of fuel in mid air. The unexpected fuel loss was caused by a bullet that is suspected to have been fired using a low caliber weapon. The damaged aircraft is said to be in repairable condition. The chopper was assigned to facilitate VVIP transport related to the President's visit to Arugam Bay in the Eastern province.
Meanwhile 8 bombers of the SLAF launched an air attack on a special training base of the LTTE north east of Mankulam. The raid was conducted at 6am in the morning. Casualty details are not available as of now.
In other news, the Air Force has flown several night time missions using its bombers during the past 2 weeks. The bombers flew over Kilinochchci, the de facto capital of LTTE, at least 3 times but did not engage in any bombing raids.

The story was like this an American educated female political figure who wasn't mentioned as Tamil or Sinhalese, undergoes house arrest in SL for 2 years before returning to US. ReplyDeleteYes! Eye for an eye is bad but it has no relevance in our situation in Sri lanka and it has no relevance in a place like in Israel where that country is surrounded by venomous Arabs. We are in a similar situation where much of our threat is coming from the Diaspora that have been manipulated and 60 million living across the sea in TN.
Im yet to see or hear from the Karuna faction a statement of remorse and a gesture of truly inviting the majority community to actively take part in their areas, perhaps asking them to settle down in their areas, the areas these people have vacated decades ago. Try go to north of Trinco and you can see empty houses vacated by the Sinhalese and go to places east of Girithale passing Welikanda,then coming south these houses have been vacated and been occupied by their people. I personally know a few who have come to live in Kandy, finding difficult to get back.
Hon MR should seek this opportunity to get the likes of Karuna and the CM to wholeheartedly agree to resettle these people back to their homes, thus bringing true normality to the area then we could start forgiving the one time terrorists for their terrible crimes committed against innocent people. This is not South Africa where the healing process began with truth and reconciliation where a majority fought against the powerful minority but in our case it was a ruthless minority of rebels fighting the majority and the state. So Karuna has to come a long way to reconcile and even ask for forgiveness form the innocent cops that was murdered in cold blood..MR is a strong position to demand this before giving them any consideration of position or reward. We live in a hard world and must act accordingly, then we will be respected. I think UK has given a poison chalice to SL in the form of deporting him to SL and it’s up to Karuna to make the right gestures and the gosl to act with authority like a responsible government and take advantage of this guy’s predicament for the welfare of the whole nation.

It is the correct and the proper thing for the gosl to look into this and it’s part of the healing process specially for those innocent families of the cops that were excecuted.It’s ok to fight in battle but not right to be cold bloodedly killed. Massacres of both sides must be spoken out and true remorse must be expressed. I don’t really mean that Kruna should be jailed as he has done enough to dismantle the northern rebels in the EP,but has he really given up a claim to a separate state in the EP because detaching from the vanni tigers does not mean that he has detached from claim to a separate area for them selves and to the Muslim community that may be next in line? No one is a "Modaya" by birth. It is their "acts" that makes anyone either Modaya or not. .. and again we all do Moda Acts from time to time. But learning from Moda acts and moving on is the most "Brainy" act that anyone can do.
..and I agree with your certain comments about Vezapizza and his blind followers. The world has moved on and all these blind followers are likes toads in the well. I don’t believe that he has done us any favours by going against the northern tigers but for reasons of self interest and the gosl had made his work cut out by chasing most of the ltte away from the EP.I am sure there’s definite anger by the eastern tigers for the arrogance and neglect shown by the northern brothers. That does not mean that the eastern guys have embraced us whole hartedly.Gestures like going to places of our religious intrests,hugging our leaders in public, good photo opportunities is not going to help us but help them to create what they have in mind, their ulterior motive. I have really gone through the mill in my life and I will not be gullible that easily.

The government forces are on the verge of defeating the Tamil Tigers, the former deputy commander of the LTTE said.
ReplyDeleteIn an exclusive interview with BBC Sandeshaya, Vinayamurthi Muralitharan known as Karuna Amman said the Tamil Tigers are `very weak` in the face of continuous military offensive.
`The LTTE are now only maintaining a defence line. They can`t launch any offensive. They are very weak now,` col. Karuna said.
However, it will take some time for the military to defeat the LTTE.
`It will not happen in the next few months. We have to work together to win this war,` he told BBCSinhala.com.
Karuna Amman was deported from UK, where he served a prison sentence for immigration offences, to Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
It was his first media interview since arriving in Colombo on Thursday.
He appealed to all communities, Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil, to help the government to defeat the LTTE which he described as a `brutal terrorist group`.
The leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) said he is `very happy` that his deputy is appointed as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council. (EPC)
Col. Karuna insisted that he has no plans to replace TMVP deputy leader, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan known as Pillayan, as the new Chief Minister.
`We are not only representing the eastern Tamils. We represent all Tamils in Sri Lanka,` he said.
Mr. Pillayan earlier told BBC Tamil service that he would offer the post to Karuna Amman, if he returns to the country.
Karuna also revealed that he would meet President Rajapaksa and the ministers in his administration in the near future.
`We are a party in the government alliance. Everybody knows that,` he said.
International human rights groups urged British authorities to charge Karuna for war crimes while he was in British custody.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has strongly criticised decision by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that there was no sufficient evidence to charge him.
Director General of Amnesty International (AI) earlier told BBC Sandeshaya that Sri Lanka government should charge him for alleged gross human rights violations.
Karuna and TMVP are accused of serious rights violations committed while he was a senior leader of the LTTE and later with working as a paramilitary supporting Sri Lanka military.
Karuna says he was only following orders by LTTE leaders, Velupillai Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman.
Without Karuna's help SLA would not have ousted the LTTE from East..No question about that..

ReplyDeleteSri Lanka Army is closing in on the last remaining LTTE stronghold in the Mannar District. The advancing troops are soon expected to overrun the Vidattaltivu Sea Tiger base - the last enemy supply base on the Western Coast - according to military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.
The base is already under siege, forcing the LTTE to withdraw from the area.
"Troops are some two and half kilometres away from the LTTE coastal stronghold of Vidattaltivu and troops are now putting pressure on the rebel base," said Brigadier Nanayakkara.
So far the military had captured 148 square kilometres of the Mannar district, where the 58th Division is conducting military operations. Last Monday, the 58th Division based in Mannar area and the 57th Division in Vavuniya linked up after fierce fighting during the last few days.

I do not think it's a total propaganda work, and there should be partial truth in it.
When Pillaiyan group of 20 animals gang raped a TRO woman and later killed her in East two years back, no one can question how far these animals can go since they were also part of LTTE 5 years back.
LTTE is no angels by any means, I suspect there would have been many incidents of sexual abuses by some pot bellied LTTE commanders.
Stalin was the key architect of rallying Russians against Germans, and every Russian considered him as a great war hero, behind the screen, he was an evil man who led different life which include many sexual abuses and torturing the own folks, his hierarchy used 100s of thousand Russian women as sex slaves. Under Gestapo rule, most of the working women had to blow the their superiors day and night.
You may expect something similar in LTTE rule, after all barrels of rifles always have power in its short span. They got my vote of confidence for two next years, until then I should show the faith on them. Why I support LTTE, answer is simple; The LTTE is the only entity which comes closer to beat chauvinist Sinhala governments who used the terms to ethnic cleanse Tamils.

ReplyDeleteEvidence of LTTE plans to launch a surprise attack on the advancing 59 troops in Weli Oya was revealed in a recent capture of an LTTE recce team leader. The leader was only 17 years old, but had served in the LTTE for five years.
The Tiger cadre had arrived with 34 other cadres by sea. The LTTE has many secret routes to infiltrate the East via Kokilai and Kokkuthuduwai behind the advancing line of troops North of Janakapura and in the general area Kiriibbanwewa. The group had been tasked to recce the strength, locations etc of advancing troops from behind the SLA line and to launch small scale attacks in the rear of the 59 Division as and when necessary.
The Kokilai, Kokkuthuduwai and even Nayaru lagoons are difficult areas to defend against small landing teams. The Parangiyawaadiya area and the Parangiya-aaruwa ravine in Kokilai is a favorite landing point for LTTE units.
This area was raided for the first time recently since the 59's operational engagement. Four 8-man teams that searched the jungle on information from the captured Recce team leader managed to uncover a boat and other equipment from this area. The 34-man team had by then escaped.
Informed sources claimed that the 59's advance into LTTE areas is crucial but has been delayed. The delays are partly intentional so that more LTTE cadres are boxed-in, engaged and annihilated. On the other hand, the thick jungles and concentration of enemy troops have delayed the advance.
Unlike Mannar and Vavuniya, the SLA cannot use the Armoured Corps or Mechanized Infantry Units. The fighting is down to the infantrymen and their small arms. RPGs, Infantry support weapons like the 81mm mortars and Recoilless Rifles (RCL) are used extensively.
Calling in air strikes is largely ruled out and heavy artillery and MBRL fire is also obstructed by large trees and vegetation. It is in this scenario that the Army has to now watch out for LTTE recce teams, which are usually followed by a larger attack force.

tamils (although % has reduced) is over 10% (all types) and is a formidable force at a presidential election (which matters most and one president can have many parliaments he wishes). therefore the president will HAVE TO look into the requirements of tamils (as citizens) as well. so there are mechanisms in place.
OTOH if GOSL and LTTE can reach a serious agreement that stops violence, dignifies each other, allows rights of every citizen (not just tamils)and allows a long term democratic settlement it will be fantastic.
but we know it is not likely.
therefore war remains the only option. the sooner we win the war the more sinhala, tamil & muslim civilians are going to be safe.

In 1989 I was in Ampara. Hundreds of Sinhala youth were killed and burnt by Premadasa government -no one say a single word about it. No AI, no HRW, and no BBC, no IC, no foreign Ambassadors- all were silent.
ReplyDeleteAfter the ceasefire broke, when the Army/STF was advancing, LTTE asked people to evacuate the villages, and they themselves burnt houses before the Army arrived.
This was done not in one occasion, but in many occasions - I personally know because we had land and Paddy Fields in Batticola. Now, we do not know what has happened to them at all. We even do not know whether our Tamil friends are there anymore.
In early 1980s, Karuna was about 16 - 19 years old and he comes to help with our paddy. This whole harmony was destroyed by Tamil racism and hatred nurtured in Jaffna and Colombo and brought to the East and the rest of the country.
Not only Tamils, but also thousands of Sinhalese and Muslims who lived in the North and the East lost their houses, loved ones, belongings, livelihoods because of this Tamil racism and separatism. I feel sorry about all of them -Tamils, Sinhalese, and Muslims.
..and I want to add one thing too.. it is so unfortunate that when LTTE came to East, the biggest supporters of LTTE was the Church -not the Hindu priests. The whole LTTE moment in the East was nourished by Fathers of the Church -they were the biggest sponsors of LTTE in the East, I do not know how it was in the North. Fathers were openly blessing LTTE and were working 'very closely' with the LTTE leadership in the East. Church was the linking point of youth to LTTE in every village.

I was being sarcastic. Scroll down in my post and you will see the following:

I was only talking about Jaffna Tamils because only the Jaffna variety preach their "superiority." In my experience, the Eastern Tamils are actually quite sophisticated in ways that many others have ignored.
Unlike Jaffna people, the Eastern Tamils do not have much caste problems. Many easterners know Sinhala and are able to interact with Sinhalese. In many ways they have similarities to Sinhalese- probably because their ancestors were Sinhala. I can understand why historically the most effective and dangerous Tigers came from the east.

sinhalese have been an EXEMPLARY majority subject to few incidents that didn't involve many people.
this is different in pakistan, india, malaysia, spain, etc., etc. even britain!! (where MOST asians prefer to live in areas of high asian/south asian population).
unfortunately this level of minority protection is not there among the large minorities to the extent it is there in the majority.

As I recall, Karuna (and thousands of other young Tamil men) joined the LTTE only after 1983. The LTTE had only 30 members before Black July, even though it had been formally established in 1976 (and had roots going back to 1972). Yet by late 1984, a little more than a year after the 1983 riots, the LTTE had over 1500 members (including Karuna). The numbers exploded in the subsequent years and now the LTTE numbers in 5-digits.
How would you explain this huge jump? Don't you think something else is involved?? Do you think 3000 (non-LTTE) Tamils could get murdered in one week without Sinhala racism?????

Please tell me whether I understand correctly:
Basically you support the LTTE for emotional reasons. Not for any logical or even pragmatic reasons.
You know that the LTTE is corrupt and rotten. You know that the bulk of LTTE leadership does not give a damn about squishing the normal people living in N-E under its great weight. You know that the Tamils do not have much of a future if the LTTE is victorious.
Yet you still support the LTTE because the LTTE fulfills your desire for revenge.
Assuming that I understand your perspective correctly, I have the following questions:
1. Do you think it is selfish of yourself to support an organization which is greatly contributing if not the key contributor to the destruction of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, all because you have some beef with the Sri Lankan governments? Is it really worth the utter annihilation of the Tamils to be able to say that you gave a bloody nose?
2. Do you see a contradiction in supporting an organization which survives only by encouraging anti-Tamil racism among the Sinhalese- this very same racism that you claim to oppose???
3. Is the LTTE really harming the Sri Lankan leadership? There have been some like Premadasa, Athulathmudali, Gamini Dissanayake who were killed, but my understanding is that the Sinhala leadership on the whole has not suffered at all as a result of the LTTE. So are you really getting revenge when the Liberation Heroes allow people like Cyril Mathew and Ven. I lost few of my classmates and relatives to SLA barbarism. The way my classmate killed was brutal- I do not want to go in details. In nutshell, LTTE is the result of past SLA atrocities and the discrimination against the Tamils.

Fishermen on indefinite strike against Sri Lankan Navy’s action
RAMESWARAM: Even as the Sri Lankan Navy released 249 mechanised boats along with around 1,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen on board after detaining them for nearly a day, various fishermen associations of Rameswaram island have launched an indefinite strike protesting against the attitude of the island Navy.
As soon as the news spread about the detention of a large number of fishermen, hundreds of anxious relatives, friends and others assembled in front of the jetty at Rameswaram, the famous landing centre of fishermen.
Though only a few boats returned initially, fishermen’s relatives heaved a sigh of relief on information that most of the fishing boats were returning.
Official sources told The Hindu that the Sri Lankan Navy, which escorted 230 trawlers to Talaimannar and another 20 boats to Delft island (Neduntheevu), conducted a thorough search and detailed inquiry with all crew members. After ascertaining there was “nothing” in the boats, all except one boat were released. Many fishermen, who returned to the shore without a catch, complained to the fisheries authorities that they were “humiliated” and “harassed”.
Many global positioning systems (GPS), cell phones and other fishing equipments were either taken away or damaged in the process.
Defence sources added that the Sri Lankan Navy carried out the massive exercise based on intelligence inputs that a few fishing boats were carrying “explosive materials” to Sri Lanka.
One boat (TN-10-MFB-203) of Thangatchimadam was detained, as the crew members tried to conceal “something” in the boat. Bothagar (24), Royappan (36), Siluvai (24) and Innachi (22) were on board.
“All of a sudden a flotilla of small and bigger ships of Sri Lankan Navy surrounded all the fishing boats near Kachchatheevu. After terrorising us by opening fire in the air, they took away our boats to Talaimannar and kept there for many hours. Though I pleaded innocence, the naval personnel beat me and many others,” said Kirubai of Thangatchimadam.
Rumous of Rameswaram said they threatened the fishermen with dire consequences if they came for fishing again. “It seems that they (Sri Lankan Navy) have taken a ‘tough’ stand against Tamil Nadu fishermen,” he added.
Meanwhile, at an urgent meeting held at Rameswaram various fishermen associations have announced an indefinite strike from Wednesday.
T. Anthoniraj, president, Vercode Fishermen Association, told The Hindu that fishermen were subjected to untold humiliation. The action of Sri Lankan Navy on Wednesday showed that the fishermen would have to pay a heavy price if they went for fishing in their “traditional and rightful” areas. Besides launching an indefinite strike immediately, all fishermen would block road traffic at Pamban bridge on July 10 demanding that the State and Central governments find a solution.

Your friends and relatives were killed after the war began, right? The Sri Lankan armed forces together did not number more than 10,000 before the war started in 1983. The SLA was just a parade ground organization. It did not create the LTTE, contrary to what you argue.
I pointed out to noltte=peace that the 1983 riots helped create the LTTE that exists today. But the riots were sparked by the LTTE's killing of 13 soldiers. The riots were a situation that the LTTE wanted to create. It was only after the LTTE killed the soldiers in Jaffna that both sides began to expand enormously.
What I'm trying to tell you is that this situation where ordinary Tamils watch their loved ones get killed was created by the LTTE. The LTTE WANTED them to get killed. Because, if they didn't get killed then you would not support the LTTE.
By supporting the LTTE, you are supporting the continuation of the war that is orphaning Tamil children and ruining Tamil society and values. Tamil vs. Tamil violence never existed before the LTTE. For all the support you give, the LTTE will just create more Karunas and Pillayans. Is this the situation that your lost relatives and friends would have wanted??
