LTTE aircraft drops bombs on Trincomalee SLN base

2 light aircraft belonging to the LTTE dropped bombs near Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) base premises in Trincomalee a short while ago. Contrary to pro LTTE media reports, damages caused by the air raid are minimal as the bombing was highly inaccurate and off target.

At least 2 bombs were dropped by the LTTE aircraft before they flew back towards Wanni. Although heavy anti aircraft fire was directed from the ground, the planes had flown back seemingly unharmed.

Please see comments section for updates.

  4. From tamilnet:
"(SLAF) Kfir bombers were seen over Ki'linochchi during the reported air attack in Trincomalee"

If this is true, why weren't the Kfirs diverted to attack the Zlins? I mean, a few hits from the 30mm cannon is enough to bring the damn thing down, you don't need missiles for that.

The warning came about 5 mins before the attack. They flew low and AA guns obviously didnt do any damage.

  10. I think this Kurumbtti landing to a road, not to Iranamadu . flying very low level and not caught to radar.
i am sure,we can shoot down, if these Kurumbatti stay in air nearly1 hour.

  11. Come on.. 3 minutes is more than enough time for the most important naval base to prepare its defences..

are these poeple saying TAF should let them now and come. Not hitting the air craft is one thing but 3 minutes should be more than enough to prepare what ever defence we have.

Its not the radar that has failed looks like its the personal.

Unlike you LTTE coolies we don’t deny when something has happened. But the truth is they missed their target.

But they did launch an attack which we feel SLDF should have done more than just let them fly by.

But i guess this is only news you all have to to show for (a missed bomb) for such a long time... So enjoy.. we dont care that much since it was failed. What we do care is what kind of defences are in place next time we might not be so lucky

  18. there is a big problem here!
1st one is that these tin cans got away yet again. we do have helicopters that have night vision.

the 2nd is where these came from.
"The 'Tiger Air Force' planes had come from the direction of the sea, flying very low, Naval sources indicated."

if these tin cans came from the sea my guess is that they are not the old planes. this must be a sea plane because with the position that our forces are in they cant even think about lifting a plane off the ground. they could have easily done this with the sea planes and as defence says they flew very low, hence the radars could not detect them. the AA guns are useless if you are flying at the height of a coconut tree.
the important thing now is not to look at the things that happened but to check out the aftermath scenario. our kfir's and mig's can easily scout the sea for any unwanted ships or seaplanes.(do they have night vision?)

but as someone said this could be a diversion tactic. they might be planing another air attack on colombo or somewhere cos the jets are searching for them in the north.
but a full scale counter attack is highly unlikely

  26. Looks life the aircrafts went east (probably the newly expanded runway) from wanni, then came from the sea.

Only five minute notice? Pretty bad indictment of the quality and range of SLAF's radar cover and its state of monitoring. Was it a 2D or 3D radar? Is the East coast sea filled to the brim with tourist traffic that it took so long to distinguish friend from foe? Was the radar operator having a 'brake'. Whatever it is, LTTE has proven again that it has quality intel on SLAF capability.

Usual suspects (TamilNet, BBC, Washington Post, etc) will make a great bog song and dance about the success of this 'mission' in the coming days. For my part, i hope we learn the lessons and be better prepared for the next time ( i have a feeling as the LTTE loose more and more ground, the air crafts will be pressed to make more and more operations for the sake of morale and to boost funding).

Lastly, i hope the F7s, Kfirs and Mig 27s draw some LTTE pilot blood in their retaliation bombing runs.

  29. The best strategy would be to track the zlins using Radars; calculate the time they take to return to where they came from; and fly over the suspected places that they use to land these.

Firing all over the sky won't help to take them down unless we deploy special teams with arms to fire low flying aircrafts (Maybe heat-seeking SAMs).

    ReplyDelete
  35. From the information i got from sources in the Navy, the LTTE's main aim for this attack seems to have been to try and hit one of our OPVs.

That plus demoralize our troopers and give a boost to the LTTE's fast dropping morale.

However, the fact that there was only a 5min warning window yet again shows that the SLAF buying the MiG-29 would be a very costly blunder.

Even the Flucrums would need at least a 20min warning to scramble, and intercept. Besides at the low levels the LTTE aircraft fly, it would be difficult at best to get off a cannon shot at them.

Missiles often loose accuracy at low level. So we need to come up with another solution to this LTTE mosquito airforce. And squash them to oblivion.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think we need to be more patience this time also..yes, you have a bit of embarrassment but think this way now LTTE are in the process of image building.. and also kill more in one go…
What I think we need to carry on what we do and stick to the plan…on going operations and we know those aircrafts are with them…probably take off from see or lagoon …

I have one question what is the best way to tackle this small aircrafts any one got any idea …probably they might have come from the sea..so it’s too late to react ?..have we really studied these aircrafts ?

Defencenet what is the latest update on this ?

LTTE took a big risk by sending the mosquitos. If they were shot game over. If they come back guaranteed satisfaction for diaspora. If they do damage then only real crisis for SLDF. However SLN were able to avoid disastor.

Tigers didn't put bombs into jungles and sea intentionaly. They couldn't take the target due to SLN fire. SLA protected the base, good job.

I think they send mosquitos from newly constructed air strip. Or was it to divert attention? Any how they need only few mins to come to the closest SLA areas from any LTTE area. Thus kfir, mig solutions will not work due to lack of respnse time. When kfirs fly mosquitos probably already landed.

I don't see this is an big issue now. This kind of shows will continue until SLA clear north 100%.

  49. Guys,

I always said (in my previous posts) that MiG-29’s were a waste of money. The only half-decent justification that I’ve seen so far is the fact that our current fleet of MiG’s are coming to end of their lifespan and we need to replace them. Since we are replacing MiG’s, it’s better to replace them with MiGs!

Even when we get a fully operational fleet of MiG’s, they will be stationed at KAB and will be unable to stop terrorists from carrying out quick bombing runs.

The ONLY way we can stop this nuisance is to improve the capability of our detection systems.

If it costs too much to build a radar net that covers most of SL air space, then is it not possible to have SMALL radar stations dotted around the place so that it becomes nearly impossible for terrorists to create a flight path to avoid them?

I’m pretty sure that you can build a radar net around strategic locations that gives more than 5 minutes notice. We must at least have these radar stations in strategic locations such as KAB, AAB, Trinco, Palaly etc.

Also, if their intel is good about our radar systems, then why not have a few mobile radar stations and move them around? If this is the case, then they would have to have VERY good intel if they are to avoid them.

SLAF has improved vastly over the past couple of years but frankly this situation is embarrassing. The air force chief needs to come up with something soon!

Heavy explosions rocked the Trincomalee Harbour around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and the Sri Lanka Navy sources confirmed that at least one LTTE aircraft had dropped bombs, but refused to comment on the casualty details.

    Tamil Eelam News

Trincomalee harbour came under heavy attacks from the two Tamileelam Air Force (TAF) bombers on Tuesday evening 9:05 p.m.

  52. Well-timed blessing in disguise

It is embarassing to note that the SLDF failed to shoot down these air crafts, for the fourth time in a row.

However, the stupid mission worked in our favour: we know they still have air-crafts; they can carry home-made bombs; they may try the same again; they dare not fly towards deep south; repeated failures to cause any significant damage show omens are not good for the brutes.

Even the Tamilnet is not very enthusiastic about the lates mission failure; it says that the LTTE has not confirmed the said incident.

Only headache is the headlines published by the unpatriotic forces and the international media; but they seem to be quiet too.

I think before Iranamadu is made to vibrate, the brutes have to do something with these toys; may be, diaspora put pressure on Prabha to do his magic. We can live with it though.

    game on indeed...........

    @ the others,
ltte hav few choices with regards to their TAF

1-let them gather rust on the ground

2-moral boosting runs, like just now, where the best case scenario is of very low strategic gain.

3-actively use them in a CAS role like we do the hinds.this will definitely result in their destruction.

4-suicide run, one-way ticket mission into a high profile target in the south.im thinking presidents house or at a rally or something.again the probability for success is minute, given their available armaments.

5-directly or indirectly aiding lord Fatso to leave the island, either by creating a necessary diversion to slip him out by other means, or by airdropping him into the sea to be picked up by a vessel.

think about it,....we need not stress out so much about TAF.

they will comedown soon enough, probably by a lucky shot from a T-56.

best would be to send in search and destroy teams of LRRP.......

almost typed it in DN and deleted it YESYETRDAY without posting 'cos i thought i would looked like an idiot to say such a thing when it looked SO impossible.

but the 'imaginery' target was KAB not trinco anyway.

what we need is to dislodge the LTTE (and its infrastructure) from the mulaitivu area. this will take care of TAF.

wasting ANYMORE money on air defence systems, MiG-29s, radars, etc., etc. is pointless.

given the time taken for SLAF pilots to board jets, other preparations no matter how short, time it takes to travel to trinco, etc. , detect TAF crap takes enough time for TAF crap to complete their VERY SHORT mission.

had this happened 4 days earlier, it MAY have had SOME impact on the election as well.

  59. First we should admit that LTTE did what they wanted again exactly the way we don’t want it to happen.

It seems to me that LTTE’s strategy was to launch their zlins while SLAF jets are already on air, so that it is difficult to change the mission or launch a new mission (assuming SLAF still does not have enough technology and pilots to carryon such missions).

It is good that the damage is not that severe.

Anyone can fly low hugging the coast with out much detection.

The SLDF should not divert its focus, and should keep the operations running on full-throttle.

LTTE's most of the activities are taking place at night, and as soon as MIG 29s hit the road, they would be wetting their pants at night too.

This the last legs of LTTE breathe.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It IS a diversionary tactic. The idea is to drop a couple of pieces of bangers and have the mob howl loud like they laid a nuke. And that targets to psyching up the podiyens and loosen the purse-strings of the diaspora. More importantly, cause a rukus, just like the one a lot of you guys are involuntrarily subscribing to, so that there is considerable pressure on the forces and their deciosion makers to be watching the skies, when they should be watching the battle front and getting results.
The successful effect of the one bomb, is clearly seen in the behavior of the majority even in this blog. Multiply that a thousand times for all the other pissed off bloggers all over the world, the return on investment for that one sortie out-classes anything our guys can do with all of their more sophisticated hot-rod toys.

    Let's d a little growing up, people.

The LTTE's tin cans cannot change the course of this anti-terrorism operation. It is beyond the point of no return and the momentum already gathered is going to carry this thing all the way thru. It's a done deal. Even if we allow free flight to the LTTE on a regular basis and simply continue with operations as planned, this game is still going to be over soon.

Let's stop acting up amatuerishly each time a tin can delivers a little bang. The only danger they pose is the ability to use these aircraft in a crop-duster role to spray weaponized chemicals, and that's all that we need to watch over. Each time we start cloberring the furniture when something like this happens, it does help the LTTE's cause as the clamouring is definitely counter-productive. Let's trust the people who are handling this problem. so far they've done enough to prove that they are completely and adequately professional to deliver a conclusive solution to Sri lanka.

When the WW-II was in the last stages, the Germans built the Messerschmidt-206, the world's first jet powered fighter. Even though it was a devastating weapon compared to everything the allies had, the momentum of the war had already turned against Germany.

There really is no comparison in the fight we are discussing, but a mere illustration to the importance of how inertia in large movements can become a decisive factor which can even overwhelm other changing odds.

-LOL, so what did you think before the attack?
-they don't have aircrafts as SLA has shot every unit down?
-they cannot carry bombs? They simply fly over things and those things explode?
-they acutually did fly towards deep south though, and bmbed oil storage facility. Heard from a worker there was millions USD in losses.

And yes, they could have bombed away at Sinhalese buildings and caused several thousand deaths, but then again Tamil Army are different from Sinhala Army brutes.

  70. worst thing is we still operates our Attack jets from deep south sri lanka. when SLAF requested the base to move around Dambulla/Sigiriya Area so called environmentalist scream that it's harmful for sigiriya fresco's. i don't know what's behind that, but we would've moved the countries biggest airbase into central area of the country along with all the military Radars. we are never gonna shoot down low flying planes, until we move the airbase. now in current situation, we have to wait untill the Civilian air traffic get cleared from the Katunayake area to launch Fighters.

    ReplyDelete
  71. This is another major humiliation to the SLDF. LTTE can fly to our bases (Katunayaka, Anuradhapura, Palali and now Trinco) and drop gravity bombs and go unharmed. This is a bloody daring stunt. Well done LTTE!

    ReplyDelete
  72. TS,

    agree with your OVERALL assessment.

"What makes you think air defence failed?"

    1. TAF violated our aerospace
    2. nothing happened in relation to it
    3. TAF dropped bombs on a SLN base
    4. TAF escaped unscathed
    5. TAF STILL has the capability to REPEAT these OFFENSES

we detected them, fired at them & possibly confused them to miss the targets and forced them away.

    ReplyDelete
  73. the surest way to stop TAF is to attack the mulaitivu area & dislodge LTTE's infrastructure.

this can stop other surprises they MIGHT have as well.

    ReplyDelete
  74. it is absolutely unacceptable that sri lanka has only one runway that can accommodate jet aircraft. instead of wasting millions of dollars on mig-29 how about expanding the runway and facilities at hingurakgoda (which is very close to trinco)? you dont need jets to take these takaran planes down. a simple turbo prop with machine guns will do.

mahinda wanted a second air port at hmabanthota, another mihin air type blunder, they started work before completeing the environmental assessment. now work has been put on hold due to damaging the bundala national park and local fishing.

    ReplyDelete
  75. While the SLAF does not do normally resort to retaliatory attacks, I believe this would be a good time to launch attacks on any and all suspected LTTE Terrorist Air assets in the Wanni. One instance where any collateral damage would be lost in the storm surrounding this attack on the SLN Trinco base.

Obviously, somebody needs to he held accountable - LTTE terrorists have obtained leaked information as there is normally a visible presence of Mi24's at China Bay during the loading, departure, and transit of the troop carrier to Jaffna (even the fishermen in Kinniya know which day of the week the troop carrier leaves Trinco for Jaffna).

Can somebody confirm that there are certain SLAF officers of very high rank that have dropped the last letter of their surnames to appear as Sinhala and bypass the intensive security background checks that would normally be done for members of our depri(a)ved minorities? Given the past history and ruthless nature of the LTTE, they would not hesitate to blackmail these officers into leaking information, threatening their kith and kin.

    ReplyDelete
  76. onespirit,

"While the SLAF does not normally resort to retaliatory attacks..."

    not true mate.

retaliation is not kneejerk tit-for-tat; it is a well thought after attack/s coming after weeks sometimes. what makes it "retaliatory" is the DETERRENCE element.

i'm a BIG fan of DETERENCE. this time should be no exception. this is NOT ONLY a trial of TAF capabilities. it is also about testing the govt's resolve to KEEP the upper hand ALWAYS. IF it is NOT SO strong for a few weeks, etc. , that's enough for tigers to hit, run, escape & REPEAT.

the best example is israel. MANY cities (especially those it NEW settlements) are totally within katyusha, etc. attacks. BUT terrorists DARE NOT attack!!!

in real MD's words, "we put a HIGH price for our blood".

    ReplyDelete
  77. We all know LTTE has atleast two tin cans. SLA advance every day. What will LTTE do with tin cans?

    1. Burry it safely. (SLA may recover...)
    2. Destroy them.
    3. Just leave it some where.
    4. Use it in a optimal way.

I guess closer the SLA to LTTE main points higher the use of tincans and final one can a sucidal attack.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Those aircraft might will be doing their last few milage due to SLA getting closer day by day.
LTTE never air lifted those planes 2 days in row. Hope they would not try tonight.

  79. How the hell did we allow this thing to happen?? We always knew that these mosquitoes flew low to attack. Why can we not shoot them down KNOWING they will be flying low??
    I find it really ridiculous!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. you can't hit all the mosquitoes all the time. But at least one will come down the next time.

The need for special units trained to shoot down the low flying crafts + weapons should do the trick.

Firing all over the place will only help to chase them away. Just like a mosquito coil. :)

  82. LTTE's Takaran Air Force (TAF) completes another scenic tour

The Highly Sophisticated Tamil Eelam Air Force in another 100% successful air attack has destroyed the Entire fleet of the Sri Lanka Navy (which was docked in Trinco at that time to aid the FOOD TRANSPORTATION GENOCIDE™) has being destroyed when two TAF (Takaran Air Force) dropped two bombs in to the harbor.

According to reports only one of the two bombs exploded after they were dropped. “This is 50% success rate” said LTTE military spokesman Irasiah Ilanthiarayan confirming the attack. “That is way more than the SLAF who has a success rate of -500%” he said adding “Eelam is just around the corner now”.

The SLDF has started firing Anti-Air Craft (AA) weapons to the air but they were unable to hit any TAF plane because the planes were already out of reach of the Guns range inside Tamil Eelam Air space after completing the mission when the guns even started shooting. Speaking about the incident Irasiah Ilanthiarayan commented that the planes were not “running away” in any way when the AA guns started firing.

However according to Sri Lanka defense sources the TAF has missed the one and only ship in dock the Jetliner Troop Transport Ferry because they were unable to find it. “This is completely absurd” said Mr. Ilanthiarayan. “The Trinco harbor is in Tamil Eelam. Therefore every Tamil knows the lay of the land, be it from air, sea or ground. There’s absolutely no way the TAF pilots would have missed their target. After all they have always been successful…. ALWAYS”

  93. The Morning After The Night Before

Was it embarrassing? – Yes, hugely embarrassing.

Naval base destroyed? – No, but 12 sailors injured.

How did media report this incident? – Well, the BBC Sinhala reporter had to change ‘HIS’ knickers several times last night ( we’ll come back to deal with the BBC Sinhala, on a later date).

Just ignore the incident? – No, we should learn from it. What did work, and what didn’t. Perhaps we should tap into the newly formed ‘Mod network of professionals for the knowledge base’ also.

No need to change the President, or the SLAF / Navy Commanders.

I wouldn't panic about the incident.Lets give the forces another 60 days.I have a feeling that these are sea planes in concrete bunkers in mullathiv. However the navy needs to be subject to further battle simulations.I am sure they understand that a lax attitude on their part .if it exists.. will only claim their lives. It is possible that they did their very best under the circumstances since you cannot illuminate a naval base and highlight possible targets making it easy for the enemy planes. Our greatest fear now is an
attack by the LTTE flotilla headed by the aircraft carrier vilupulaaaii prapaharan whatever currently heading towards SLanka.
    Kevin,
The infiltration by spies is a very serious matter.I hope they will be dealt with very seriously if and when they are caught.

  150. A well-timed blessing in disguise

It is a bit embarssing; we failed to shoot these planes down - and for the fourth time.

However, there is a good side to it: at least, we now know they still have planes; the planes can carry impoverished bombs; they only work at the mercy of gravity and therefore, highly inaccurate; they fly very low to minimize the detection feasibility; in a few weeks, the use of these crafts becomes nil and the Tigers want to do something with that; there is no room for complacency yet.

The Tamilnet has the fifth update with this yet not much jubilation. It ends up the story saying that the LTTE has not confirmed the incident.

So, it is yet another flop. We will have to live with the embarassment for a few days until it dies out in the face of victories in the battleground elsewhere. We will weather this little storm too; we have been there before.

The Navy must not feel complacent, just because Sea Tigers are no more, until the brutes are fully wiped out. They did react, in fairness to them, but not good enough - not well-prepared for surprises.

    Guys,

Thank you everyone - Moshe, no-mess, perein, Shan, Observer etc - for the enthusiasm shown for the encounter between OAO Asithri and Rev Rayappu. I can assure you that it is not going to be a disappointment.

    Aspirations astray?

The most daring and successful LTTE attack since the start of ‘Tamil Eelam War IV’ is clearly the Anuradhapura Airbase attack by 21 LTTE ‘Commandos’ who first entered the base as a group of civil construction workers. The result was the loss of 32 valuable aircraft, including two brandnew UAVs brought from Israel. The attack tells you a lot about the organization for ‘Tamil Eelam’.""

Anyway it could have been a different story had the tigers managed to hit jetliner (and put it out of action for good). It would have caused the army several long term problems with supplies and troop transport to the north.

SLAF has hit Iranamadu but there are no confirmed reports of LTTE airplanes taking off or landing using iranamadu airstrip in this instance. Most likely they used a smaller runway in Mullaithiv.

-LOL, is this ur enthusiasm and hope and faith in ur genocidal SLA? Pathetic. Please be more optimisitc in beating the Tigers. Dear lord.

I guess this hope of hitting everywhere and hoping to kill something is why many Tamils in the 100,000s have been killed by the army.

Tamil Eelam Air-Force has repeatedly attacked military targets with shocking success everytime the SLA thought they were ready with their foreign radars, MiGs, AA, number of men....How hard do you think it is for LTTE to attack Sinhalese civilian buildings and balance the scale in Tamil civilian deaths caused by the Sinhalese army ever since the 70's?

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (FAR GREATER) then SLA. in terms of

Few things I noticed on those pics:

    1) All the LTTE kamikaze pilots have a same mustache like the “Fatty Bumba”

    a) They like bristles tickle their mouth when they kiss each other before enter each others back door(seniors get the first chance).

    b) Fatty Bumba like the bristles tickle his ars@ when pilots kiss fatty bumbas ars@ before going for the suicide mission.

    c) They want to have bristles around the mouth so that make them look like a tiger (animal ofcoz)

    2) Have a look @ the size of the Fatty Bumba’s ars@!

    a) That’s where they stick the Takaran Planes when not in use (bomb his ars@)

    b) He got a clamo bomb up in his ars@ to use if he get caught

    c) He is just a fat ars@ lazy dumb fcuk

    3) LTTE have ran out of Tsunami Funds.

    a) One of the LTTE kamikaze pilot is not wearing any foot wear (not even a BATA). Either he left his BATA slippers behind when he ran after Takaran plain crashed or he was just taking a shit in the beach when Fatty Bumba call him

    b) Still use old chairs “Wal Putu”. Must have got from a Temple they bombed.

    d) Fatty Bumba’s toilet can be seen on one of the pic and covered by Coconut leaf “Pol Athu” and must be a “open pit”( Wala Kakussiya) Fingers cross one day he will fell into that and SLAF to drop a bomb on top of that! Now that would be funny! Ha ha ha

    3) Fatty Bumba sitting with open legs.

    a) he likes to show his down stairs bristles!

    b) he wanted to SLA to come and scr@w him!

    c) He got small balls and a d#ck or he don’t have any as I can not see any lump on his “Dolpy” ( and none of the kamikaze pilots have either)

    A Joke:

Question: What happened if the bomb go off accidentally when a LTTE suicide case taking a shit?

Answer: Shit will hit the fan! Ha ha ha

Even in the English language you have to "outsource" just like all your fancy weapons, money, tsunami money - which mostly goes into the coffers of the ministers and not the the people, whether it be Tamil or Sinhalese who are suffering, anyways, since there are Tamil and Sinhalese bros/sis that do get along well - except for Sinhala extremists and racists that run the country and the ones who support them, which includes Tamil excretions of filth.

Please, sir/madame? go educate your self in the English Language, and judging by your lack of skill, maybe Sinhalese too.

Though the damages they caused are low, this is a Moral Booster for them. Good to go for Migs & etc..But why not getting simmilar type of planes or helicopters with about 150~200% speed than the takaran planes & fitted with Machine guns & go for a WW2 type attack. Its bit embarrassing, But it will give more efficient & quick takeoffs with least prepared airstrips. We can also Claer some area that we captured lately & make a Air strip ina dusty way & gun them down Next time...
But these small attacks cant make a difference unless ofcourse the next time a plane loaded with explosives rammed in to jetliner without any Resistance from our forces...
