Special security for 3 VIPs during SAARC summit

A special security plan will be launched to ensure protection of 3 VIPs whose lives are threatened by terrorist attacks as per intelligence information. These VIPs are due to arrive in Sri Lanka for the SAARC summit that is to be held later this month. The special security program will include defenses for terrorist attacks from air and land as well as monitoring suspicious activity using advanced surveillance equipment.

In addition to the security plan launched by Sri Lankan forces, the respective VIPs will also bring their own security personnel. For example the Indian prime minister will be accompanied by the National Security Guards (Aka Blackcats). In addition to ground troops, several helicopters of the Indian Air Force will also be part of the air defence system during the SAARC summit. At least 3 ships of the Indian Navy are also deployed in the seas off Sri Lanka during this time.

Meanwhile the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are facing increased pressure from the armed forces in Mannar front. One of their major sea tiger bases in Viduthalaithiv is now under siege by the army's 58 division. In addition to the regular infantry units of the 58 division, several squads of the Commando regiment are also deployed in this area. It was only 5 days ago that 12 personnel from the Bravo Squad of 2nd commando regiment infiltrated the southern defence line of Viduthalaithiv and killed 27 LTTE cadres. More than 150 experienced cadres from LTTE's battled hardened brigades were called in by LTTE's Mannar commander Lakshman, to repel the Commando raid. Sgt A. Kumara and Corporal N. Wanasinghe who lead two of the three 4-man teams into battle were killed in action during the 6 hour firefight that ensued. The LTTE has further reinforced its defences around Viduthalaithiv after this incident.

  4. Actually... there were several of them killed 3 x 4-man teams. Re-enforcements were sent in to Recover all the dead bodies so it didn't fall into LTTE hands.

Guess LTTE has decided not to let SLA Excretion Units, sorry i mean to say ELite units have any fun. I guess, they are bored of letting SLA think they are winning.

  5. The Border Force in Vanni

Tamil Tigers are very busy people at present. They hold rallies, commemorations, issue certificates to themselves, and promote their ranks by themselves too.

For instance, an explosive device called, claymore, can promote a major into the rank of Colonel. An MK-83 or a heart attack can promote a Colonel to the rank of Brigadier.

On the other hand, a foot soldier, when died without a fight, takes up the rank of 'Carcass' by default.

In Vanni, they are strengthening the border force. The men and women in fighting age - aged 7 to 80 - are initially given physical training on top of a sand dune. In order to sharpen up their resolve for the big battle, that looms over and gets closer, they are supposed to do at least 3000 sit-up's in the scorching sun.

Those who struggle to make it, are given a tonic made of juice of young coconut mixed with cannabis, to revive their hidden potential.

As a way of sabre-rattling, Tigers make sure these individuals march in the streets of Killinochchi holding wooden poles to scare off the enemy forces, who carry machine guns.

Tigers, quite rightly, believe that a T-56 is no match for a wooden pole.
Their logic in this matter is very simple: the army comes in small groups, say 4's; they creep in through thick undergrowth; these border-protecting folks who carry wooden poles are supposed to hit their helmets with a moderate force to make them unconscious and then rob them of their weapons - very ingenious operation invented by Velupillai Prabhakaran, the Tiger Chief, who normally stays away from direct confrontations for obvious reasons - to lead the movement.

No military manoeuvre is perfect. And so is the tactics employed by the Border Force of Vanni.

What if this operation fails? Stakes are high, I would say. For instance, suppose the person holding the wooden pole is a young woman and the 4-man team are full hot-blooded males. These young folks are struck by a young woman by a wooden pole; of course, the blows are nowhere near enough to be fatal and nor are they prompted by a hatred against the legitimate defence force in the country.

Soldiers when look in the eyes of this young woman do not notice a shred of hatred. So, they can just do the obvious: take her to a jungle patch; talk to her, taking turns, without exhausting her and in the end winning her over to our side.

Soldiers know that their their mode of conduct is always under scrutiny and that Killinochchi jungle is not the Garden of Eden. So, we don't expect them to make the mistake that Adam and Eve did in similar circumstances. If they are tempted, they get the wrath, not only of the Almighty, but also of the Commander-in-Chief, MR.

How about these small army teams being struck by older folks with wooden poles? I am sure they won't even stare at them let alone hit them. I am sure the army can train them to be self-employed after taking them to the nearest army camp.

These men and women can produce mortar and pestle instead.

The men can produce pestle and the women can produce mortar. They don't have to look elsewhere for business acumen; the inspiration for this joint venture comes from their own respective persona - just bend over, for a quick glance, folks!

darn good strategy that, i'm sure it'll work.doesn't cost much money either which means vp can spend more money on his kids education abroad and to build bunkers with even thicker layers of concrete.

the issue is how the hell our special forces and commandos counter these pole wielding septuagenarians and the octogenarians. This will be more devastating than the ceaseless waves. SF will have to come up with a new strategy to counter this threat.

  13. Quite unlike the recent 'commando raids' of the LTTE against isolated navy outposts which relied on overwhelming firepower and manpower, this raid has clearly been carried out with the aid of the commandos' superior skill and training and also good planning. Maybe tamilnut should learn this before using the word 'commando' again.

"I guess, they are bored of letting SLA think they are winning."

Real big optimists, these LTTE goons.
The best regiments of the LTTE couldn't defeat 12 commandos with 150+ men, (200+ LTTE according to Defencewire) and in spite of their overwhelming numbers, LTTE had suffered far more damages than SLA. From this, it's not hard to see who is losing this war.

  15. India trained 29,000 Tigers, claims Minister

    By: Kassapa Ellepola

Environment Minister Champika Ranawake yesterday charged that India had given military training to some 29,000 Tamil youth and regardless of diplomatic norms had used LTTE terrorism to interfere with the 1984 government.

Addressing the media he said India helped the LTTE to take up arms and boost itself, when the Sri Lankan army with a strength of 15,000 soldiers was not able to control the LTTE then.

“The Jayasikuru and Riviresa military operations which were launched to capture the Wanni area resulted in 12,000 soldiers being killed and another 18,000 injured, mainly due to lack of proper military strategies,” he said.

The defeat ended up with the need for peace talks in 2002 and the peace deal that followed. The agreement was President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s creation which Ranil Wickremesinghe presented with a few changes after the government was toppled in 2002, he said.

“So the agreement should be called the Chandrika-Ranil agreement,” he said.

“The LTTE brought aeroplanes, missiles and other weaponry to the country during that period and the LTTE’s battle plan was to defeat our soldiers in Jaffna by blocking the supplies,” he said.

He also said the government had to react by starting the Mavil-Aru rescue operation and going on to win the Eastern province bringing down the image of the LTTE and as a result providing lessons to armies of other countries.

“The battle plan of deploying small groups to go through the jungles and attacking the heart of the LTTE has brought results. The previous battle plan of going to capture territory by following the A9 road has proved a failure in earlier operations,” he said.

“Although the government has certain problems they are courageously involved in defeating terrorism. And that is the only reason why we support this government,” he said stressing that the worlds number one US military failed to defeat terrorists in Iraq and have allegedly killed more than 650,000 civilians. He said some English newspapers had reported that the war was not that visible though the army claims that thousands of terrorists had been killed.

“Some English newspapers do not like to report about battle victories by the army. They try to honour Prabhakaran by saying he is a dedicated man and that the LTTE is the world’s best military organization.”

He said Human Rights and Media Freedom are not violated in the country as it was done in 1989 and that no journalist has been gone missing.

“A Website reported yesterday that 21 journalists were killed in the South Asian region last year and that six of them were from Sri Lanka. Two of the vicitms were from the ‘Voice of Tigers Website’. Are they journalists?. This is the picture that is shown to the world,” he said.

“The editor of the ‘Tamilnet’ website, Sivaram was killed. It is told to the world that Sivaram was a great journalist. He was the general secretary of the PLOTE (DPLF) and was killed for some money gamble which happened in Maldives but it goes down as another journalist been killed,” he said.

He said international interference with military affairs and politics should be defeated and getting people on to the streets and conducting pickets are plans of conspirators who support the LTTE.

Meanwhile JNP General Secretary Nandana Gunathilake addressing the conference said although Human Rights and Media Freedom should be protected they should not be regarded as extreme opinions.

“This war did not start because of any injustice caused to the Tamil community but because of Western imperialists who are trying to create hatred among the nations,” he said.

He said some countries were threatening the government that they would not provide any funds and trying to lay down conditions to pull back the government from winning the war.

“The federal proposal was brought forward by a team of UNP supporters inside the government and the ‘Sudu Nelum Viyaparaya’ was also one such project,” he said.

“We also have a problem regarding the government not sacrificing enough and asking the people to make sacrifices,” he said.

He also said there was not a single Human Rights organization which voiced concerns when 60,000 people were killed by the UNP government in 1989 and added that the media should be handled in the direction of the betterment of the country.

Wrong way to look at the issue.

Let's try to look positively at two golden opportunities LTTE terrorists have thrown on to our laps.

    a) to lay foudation (so we have a case) for a strong DEFENSE BASED economy. Locally researching and manufacturing missiles, gun boats, explosives etc.. small aircrafts.. The sky is the limit here.

    b) to utilize the experience of our already experienced and motivated defense folks to kick start manufacturing projects related to defence.

Capital is no issue at all. Just tap the Sri Lankan expatriates and raise money locally / internationally.

I highly recommend killing the LTTE slowly (another two years), so that we can buy time to launch these projects.

Once the LTTE is gone... the opportunity is gone for good as well. India and other countries will oppose any defence related research and manufacturing.

The country which funds the BBC is currently under fire for intoducing a 42-day detention period for terros suspects without charge. An MP resigned as a mark of protest over it.

Has the BBC crossed the line by criticizing the government, apart from just reporting? No.

BBC is a news organization and it is fairly good at it, thanks to the resources handed down by the British tax payers, although it is not a bottomless pit.

When it turns out to be an opinion organization, things get out of hand and its own standing in the global scene is at stake.

When its own government brands an organization called Tamil Tigers as a terrorist organization, this particular news organization brands them as rebels.

No dictionary does ever say that terrorist is a synonym for rebel. A teenager who refuses to marry a girl whom his mother wants him to, is a rebel, but not a terrorist. A maniac who blows up women and children intentionally and deliberately is a terrorist, but not a rebel.

Playing on these two words alone is enough to classify the BBC as a news organization with an agenda.

They will carry on like this for some time. But it is a very risky game as far as the news organization is concerned.

The British tax payer is generous and fair, but its tolerance of non-sense is limited.

So, the aspiring journalists can look forward to troubling times ahead, especially, folks tends to communicate through myriads of alternate forms, while turning their back on conventional schemes.

Does NG promote the idea of multiple Nations in SL or is it a translation error?

    Jathiya = Community, Birth, Race

Jathiya can have many meanings. We must coin a suitable non-ambiguous Singhala word to translate the Western political concept of Nation .

It is the right moment to think of such matters since we are beginning to build the idea of a SRI LANKAN NATION englobing all the communities.

I agree 100%. This is long overdue. Our previous administrations had no vision for country and the armed forces especially the CBK administration. I say we should have joined the Chinese/Pakistani JF-17 jet fighter project and similar projects with other nations on building good weapons systems. Its all about gaining the know how on building such weapon systems.

I know that Chinese would easily agree to help us set up a factory than manfactures tanks or IFVs. Already we are planning to build some patrol ships for our navy with Croatia, I heard talks are underway. Spending money on these projects are more than worth it, cause the knowledge transfer would be such an immense benefit to us. Our future military industrial complex would be build on this aquired knowledge.

    Fighting erupts at Vidattaltivu
At least 30 terrorists were reported killed Tuesday (July 15) evening, at the embattled western coastal LTTE foothold in Vidattaltivu, Mannar as elite Commando troops mounted heavy artillery and multi-barrel rocket (MBRL) fire after detecting a large LTTE land movement towards Illuppaikkadavai, military said.

According to Wanni security reports, heavy damages were caused to the fleeing terrorists approximately numbering 60. Also, the 58 division troops led by Brigadier Shavendra Silva continued offensive advances into LTTE defences and is said positioned within striking distance of the LTTE western coastal bastion at Vidattaltivu.

People use the word nation in many sense in SL when they use it in English and also the word 'jathiya' in Sinhala. It has more than one interpretation in Eglish and and in Sinhala we use the same term for all of those cases and some other cases too.

    Cases

    1. Some define nation (jathiya) as one set of people who build a country with clearly identifiable language and culture.

    examples
Chinese, Japanese, Sinhalese, German are nations but not our tamizes as they don't have a country. They are just another ethnic group. Question was what t o do with Americans, Australians etc.

    2. All the people in one country is one nation.

    examples
    India, America,Sri Lanka
Here it doesn't matter langauages they speak. Idea is to keep all together under one concept. Also known as "new nations". (naveena jatheen) Also here you identify sub categories as ethnic groups.

    3. In addition to this the word 'jathiya' is loosly used in the sinhala langauge.

    examples
jathi danda epa, cer eka mona jathiyada? jathith jathi oba mata vasanavan, eka eka jathiye eva etc.

What you said is importent. We may need to have some common concept on the meaning and usage of words as nation. (NandanaG probably spoke in Sinhala, DM translated using 'nation'.) Bad thing is NGO experts play with this kind of stuff just create more problems.

example (Check the usage of the word "adi vaseen" for "vaddas". Identift their intention.)

Gandi and B'nayake families had close relationship. JR was more closed to USA. Thus JR considered Sirima's friend Indira as his enimy and tried to screw India. He thought close ties with USA will work. Tamils (leaders) on the other hand were (and are) suffering from a 'mental issue'. This was based on racism and just becuz they were taiz they wanted seperate country and tamiznadu tamiz's help. India used this factor very well and created, trained, funded LTTE. This was a time SL economy was in the top gear aster opening economy. India's intention was to control and manage SL using LTTE as a tool and also get rid of any USA chalange via SL. At the end when India invaded SL (it was invading) USA left JR alone. USA was no fool to risk any thing going against India. Finaly JR became the 'govener' of SL appointed by India and did as he was told. India has now achieved what they wanted. Now SL is no singapore in south asia or another Thaiwan. Now SL is almost another state of India in the sense SL can't go agianst India no matter what they say. You can see MR tries so hard to manage this using China and Pakistan.

The turning point was vezapillai killing RG. That's what sealed the victory for SL. Unless SL donate ezam to LTTE there is no way for ezam now. Vezapillai was too good at killing humans but that at the same time he is too dumb.

It is importent to keep vezapillai and poddu alive until SLA finish their job. (Like keeping RW in UNP)India even now doesn't want to loose their magic tool which is used to control SL. It is upto us finish up the b***s and deel with India with a smily face later.

    Tally ho! Bravo SLDF boyz/galz!!!

Sure appears the sphincter is tightening around the racist “thamileelam” rectum while the LTTE supporting sons/daughters-of-whores are merrily dancing “pundey thamil” in many cities!

  56. --STRIKES--

JVP strike leader said now they are planning on a 3 day strike. SL is still stable after 100s of bombs and 1000s of civilians dead due to LTTE bombs in Colombo and south. And SL was stable despite the strike joke last time and I hope same will happen for the next strike too.

In other countries leaders think how to work, how to increase production, productivity etc. In SL leaders plan on how to stop production. No surprise JVP doing that. I hope my UNP friends are having a surprise with RW's sstrike backing decesion. My question is some one wants to strike (i.e. don't work) what is there to plan or organize? Just don't do work. Stay home. People in SL paid a lot due to JVP's stupidity. I think normal people must take a stand and act this time rather than letting JVP to do all stupid things.

  57. [JVP strike leader said now they are planning on a 3 day strike]

JVP has disappointed me immensely! Somawansa-JVP is just being vindictive against MR GOSL for MR GOSL giving some support to the Weerawansa-JVP clique that has always supported MR GOSL’s tough line against the LTTE MF’s.

The biggest joke for me was to see Ranil Ponnaya on stage, delivering an anti-MR GOSL harangue to a crowd the day before the last strike – wearing a red baseball cap!

I almost went into cardiac arrest! The bastard who is personally responsible for slaughtering hundreds upon hundreds of JVP youth now on stage wearing a JVP cap!

Can you believe this Ponna MF? Worse, can you believe the apparent weak character of Somawansa for allowing this Ponna MF to insult the dead JVPers by allowing him to wear the JVP cap?

Phew! I certainly can’t get over this!

  59. With so many strikes failed revolutions, university closures, JVP did tremendous damage to this country for decades seconding only to LTTE.

With Wimal Weerawansa taking virtual leadership, we saw JVP having tremendous progress over the last decade. De-merger of North and the East, teaching a good lessons to naive wits like Louise Arbour etc., are very good deeds they did.

However, as soon as he left, these guys are going back to their old monkey routes.

As rightfully Ninja said, a real "Leader" who loves his/her people/country would totally do the opposite.

I can not understand when these monkeys would understand the modern realms of this world.

Grow up Lal Kantha... Do not be another Cancer.. We have one big LTTE cancer, and we certainly do not want you either.

"Now SL is no singapore in south asia or another Thaiwan. Now SL is almost another state of India in the sense SL can't go agianst India no matter what they say."
    -----------------------------------
Come on, lets be realistic. We were never on our way to becoming another Singapore or Taiwan at that time, we would have achieved the economic prosperity level of a Malaysia, Turkey or Brazil by now had there been no war from 1983 onwards.

Singapore was always going to be ahead of us cause they are a city state and we are a nation state. Its much easier anc cheaper to develop a city state than a nation state.

But on the other hand, had we in fact developed faster than India and achieved a much higher standard of living than India, then many illegal immigrants from India would have been sneaking across the palk straits into Lanka. Lanka would be crawling with illegal Indians by now(nightmare scenario), just like some parts of the USA are crawling with illegal Mexican immigrants.

  68. sam,

jokes apart, this IS a tactical withdrawel.

    1. even defence.lk says that LTTE has moved its assets in V. to further north.

so the STs have their fighting capability (that V. presented) IN TACT!

    2. if you check googleearth, there are a PLENTY of spots from V. to poonaryn for STs to relocate.

    3. only less than 100 cadres died REFENDING V. which is VERY low for its significance. fighting for V. over the months would have killed more. this clearly shows it IS a tactical withdrawel.

of course the other side of the tactical withdrawel (in theory) which is counter attack won't be forthcoming.

it is a BIG win for SLDFs but the HARVEST is low & LTTE retained some of its assets!

"Is this Vidathalthivu? If so, you should be able to see Sea-Terrorist boats also. The location seems to be naturally defended."

Yep. That's Vidathalthivu. The place is great for a small Navy base and a radar post. And I heard that the ground elevation is also high there. You are quite correct. LTTE won't be able to find anything closer to this place (natural defences such as elevation, many waterways and tree cover) on the western coast. Their dominance in this area would be greatly weakened.

    good points
it's frustrating when these guys always manage to take their bigger assets and withdraw... wonder what was found left behind in this supposedly largest sea tiger base in the area?

    ReplyDelete
  74. It would be great if we can capture six or seven more km along A32 (towards iluppaikadavai) soon. It is important for the safety of Vidu. It’s a known fact that 57 is operating in the jungles towards North West of Periyamadu. So it would be just a matter of weeks.

    Ranil,
I thought 57 would move towards west and try to encircle Vidathalthivu. Somehow it never happened. There are many aspects of the war we are not aware of. Let’s watch the way good forces move ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Moshe

as you say a tactical withdrawal has the element of counterattack which the tigers cannot. in this sense isn't it a plain withdrawal or "penala giya" running away with whatever they can. possibly withdrew the ST assets beforehand and the infantry stayed back to fight.

At the rate the tigers are losing the coastal area the ST's would be another infantry unit. I do agree there should have been a bigger harvest but what can one do when they runaway
