Viduthalaithiv falls to the army

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) 's 58 division has been able to take control of the Viduthalaithiv town as of today (16th). LTTE maintained a major sea tiger base in the area which plays a vital role in providing supplies to the organization. In addition to its role as a logistics base, Viduthalaithiv has been the launching pad for several sea tiger raids on naval outposts recently.

According to military intelligence, the LTTE have moved some of their hardware and personnel further northwards, deep into LTTE held territory. The base has been under siege for days, both by regular infantry units of the 58 division as well as by squads of commandos.

Viduthalaithiv, located 20km north of Mannar, has been under LTTE control for nearly 19 years.

now lets rumble over and take the
attimoddai junc and kalliyad before raiding iluppaikkadavai!

No if we could have some naval fire support along the coast, things would be much better :)

this will be a the hall mark of gen Fonseka/col rajapkses war which has been unprecedented in every aspect of lankan military history...

also this will remind everyone watching...that it was for nothing that the United states staff college invited Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka to lecture the officers of the worlds most powerful and sophisticated army, on jungle combat a few months ago, creating a new page, writing in the annals of sri lankan history...

Lt Gen Fonseka is ,i hear again on invitation to visit the US again early next year on a visit put off many a time by the gen due to his local commitments at home... "

indeed. i have harped on this sometime ago ON THE EASTERN AND NORTH EASTERN COASTS.

BUT not along the western coast as it doesn't allow bigger crafts to operate.

  6. as DN and defence.lk pointed out, moving LTTE assets further northwards, worries me. we know for a fact that their cadres escaped as we could HARVEST only a VERY LITTLE.

so men (& women) & machines both escaped.

they only need additionally materials and methods to continue. methods are aplenty and there is no shortage of materials (guns, bullets, arti, mortars, RPG, APM, etc.).

there are PLENTY of places from vidathaithivu to poonaryn that can provide much the same support as the V. base to the LTTE.

i'm not for a along-the-coast movement. it should be like in the case of V. this is the way to go. trying to capture the coast (without capturing the inland landmass) to stop arms movement (which is good no doubt) is OVER ambitious.

our COAST TO COAST (EAST TO WEST) FDL based advance should continue. that leaves no lose ends for tigers to capitalise.

  7. serious blow this. vedithalthivu was their best naval base because it was so well protected. the naval base was actually located upriver there. there's a small island which protected the entry into the river mouth. check it out on the map

We must strike hard further because the LTTE will try to fight back for their lost base as soon as they got some strength as they have escaped to their other sea tiger bases at north of Viduthalaithiv.Meantime, all the commanders of 3 forces as well as the STF should be mentioned here for providing tremendous leadership and courage to our beloved soldiers at the battle filed

  10. Moshe Dyan,
Few months back you had a "barrier" strategy (to divide East and West).

Few weeks back you had a "going East" strategy.

Now you are having a "COAST TO COAST (EAST TO WEST) FDL based advance" strategy.

    Funny evolution.

  11. Su,
    Explanation accepted.
Winning the war should be the primary goal. Politics matters as far as it helps us achieving that goal. Beyond that I don't have any political affiliations. I wish the same goes with everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  12. hemantha,

    cut the crap mate.

the barrier strategy is for the vavuniya northward thrust.

the going east strategy is also for the same movement which i expected would go rather eastward. east to the A9 which is moving a bit slow for good reasons.

the COAST TO COAST (E to W) "strategy" is the overall one.

however, my prefered "strategy" in all the above instances is the HARVESTING strategy.

anyway SLA (operational level) strategies ARE EVOLVING!! (than static) which is a VERY good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Moshe Dyan,

Relax mate, what SLA is using is not entirely a “chase away” strategy, so at the moment it’s fine. This strategy will work as long as we close off any gaps. Talking about gaps, has anybody heard about the Beirut Trail recently? Is this being patrolled effectively at the moment?

Viduthalaithiv is a major achievement for SLDF. I don’t think tigers would’ve done a “tactial withdrawal” so easily from this base as we all know the importance of this base to tigers. So, again, well done SLDF!

There is one scenario that we need to be careful about though. Viduthalaithiv used to be a major sea tiger base, so tigers know the sea and the land surrounding the base very well. They may carry out a surprise amphibious assault. Are we ready for surprise attacks?

As I said before, I’m ok with the current strategy (a mix of chase away and kill) as long as we don’t leave any gaps. This means tigers will fall back every time there is a confrontation and eventually they’ll be cornered to a small area. This means SLDF has to concentrate offensive action on a smaller area.

The aim should be to dismantle big military machine of the tigers. Once they are deprived of artillery, tanks and sea tiger vessels, then even if hardcore tigers survive, they will not be able to cause much damage. We will be back to the days when they carried out “hit ‘n’ run” attacks. After that, if SLDF can carry out effective patrolling of vulnerable areas and build up a good human intel network, the problem can be contained and in the long run “solved”!! But my fear is that once Gen. Fonseka retires and MR & GR is gone, will their successors have the balls to do the job?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Moshe Dyan,
    "cut the crap mate."

    Same to you, friend.

"the barrier strategy is for the vavuniya northward thrust."

You wanted to stop logistic movements between East and west (Jayasikurui).

"the going east strategy is also for the same movement which i expected would go rather eastward. east to the A9 which is moving a bit slow for good reasons."

You have forgotten about the "Wali Oya is the most important front" crap?

"anyway SLA (operational level) strategies ARE EVOLVING!! (than static) which is a VERY good thing."

    That's something sensible. Well said.

Do any of you guys think LTTE will attack with a mass crowd movement to north or east with this kind of thrust? Do they try to defense and for how long?

I thought along the same lines, mate; but I was wrong.

My information tells me there are a plenty of vehicles lying abandoned - struck by artillery or air power - along the roads. We may see the picture soon.

Well, there is a possibility of some creeping into jungles. I think it was a very successful well-coordinated strike. So, there is a significant loss in men and materials.

The next may be Pooneryn, unless the Great commander's Nelson Touch tells him otherwise, purely based on ground realities.

  23. parakrama,

agree with most points. appreciate your comments.

"The aim should be to dismantle big military machine of the tigers. Once they are deprived of artillery, tanks and sea tiger vessels"

    1.
yes. BUT if tigers survive in large numbers (a few thousand is enough) they can EASILY get these down except tanks which they got from us; they have enough money and trasport systems provided they have an area to operate. now there cannot be a situ where they don't have an area to operate until we capture everywhere under their control. this will not happen until we kill them all, well, virtually all.

    2.
in early 1980s tigers didn't have so many arms; but they had fighters; EXTREMELY dedicated ones. from there they built on. they needed small arms then. gradually they built on it to have SAMs, TAF and ships. they can do it again.

    3.
to help them ACCELERATE it, we have a main political party that works to appease them all the time. if the present military campaign ends with ONLY destroying the LTTE war machine, LTTE only needs just one shipment to turn the tide.

OTOH, if virtually all fighters are killed and its war machine destroyed, there is MUCH lesser chance.

    4.
as we close in on "deep" tiger territory, LTTE cadres per square kilometer increases. their ability to take on the SLA also increases UNLESS we kill a substantial number of them; especially those "elites".

    5.
outside vanni, tigers can wreck real havoc IF they have cadres PLUS small arms as they did in KAB, AAB. killing is the only way to PRE-EMPT such attacks. (of course many preventive actions are required).

    6.
SLDFs have recently adopted a PREDOMINANTLY KILLING strategy THAN B4 according to Gen SF. this was quoted by dayan J as well in which he compared this strategy to the one followed by a vietnam commander whose strategy was to exterminate the enemy's fighting CADRE. in the case of vietnam, (in a given region).

on the killing strategy which i call a PREDOMINANTLY KILLING STRATEGY, i had an hours long "discussion" or rather an argument with a ......(a high ranking officer of the .........) early this year. he didn't agree THEN. at one point he thought i have a BIG personal grudge against the tigers. right or wrong, i don't.
anyway i asked him a favour so that i can be more than a keyboardwarrior and he was kind enough to oblige.

  28. Guys,

    The dangers of parroting

"There are no military solutions to the ethnic conflict," was the buzz phrase, sometimes back, in every one's lips except those of patriots. When someone with a certain social recognition, be in politics or diplomacy or even religion, utters this well-hackneyed damn phrase, there is a chorus of folks dancing to the same tune, parroting the same thing - and letter for letter - indeed.

These semi-conscious bores turn their ugly back on conflicts that actually were won militarily, while highlighting a handful of battles that were not won by conventional means.

The Vietnam conflict, for instance, has been haunting the American psyche for decades. As far as America is concerned it was not a loss; on the contrary it was a national embarrassment and a very costly failure.

It is not a loss, because Americans fought the war, thousands of miles away from their motherland, relying on its naval power, while its then rival - the Soviet Union - were busy in making sure the conflict goes their way, thanks to its geographical and political closeness to the region, in many different ways.

So, the victory of any terror group over a conventional army became a literary equivalent of Vietnam, we hear.

The recent Iraq war was termed as another Vietnam by the pundits at the BBC and the other news(opinion) organizations. At some point, it looked like going that way, I must admit: the American losses were about a soldier-a-day; the road side bombs ruined their Humvees; coffins draped in the famous flag were bringing up the sad memories; the morale was at an all-time-low.

However, the new commander who took over the operations in Iraq, has actually turned things round. He increased the troop numbers in an unprecedented way and called it, quite appropriately, the surge. It did the trick; Al-Qaida is on the run and the Iraqi population has actually turned against them. Iraqi people are beginning to see a new dawn, although at a slow pace despite sitting on a mine of black gold - oil.

I was against Iraq war for some reason - something, even I don't know. I still consider Sadaam Hussein as a very brave man: he didn't compromise, nor did he run away; he faced the gallows with head held high and dignity.

However, Sadaam had a darker side that cost him his power and Iraqis a comfortable life, something they were quite entitled to.

One of Sadaam's top generals son is a good friend of mine, here in Europe, and I was one of his mentors at some point, to be more precise , when he was undergoing pilot training.

The General in question was the officer in-charge-of Basra region in Southern Iraq, whereas his older brother was the Governer. They were both Shiates and Sadaam was a Sunni - two main divisions of Islam.

The brother of the General, the Governor, was caught by Sadaam's guards at the Iraq / Iran border while fleeing, just before the Iraq war. He was brought, according to my friend, to Sadamm in chains, and his younger brother, the General, who was still serving at that time, was summoned to meet Sadaam.

Can you believe what happened, next, folks? It is bloody shocking, mate!

Sadaam pulled out his pistol, killed the Governor on the spot, in front of his younger brother, the General - for being a coward! A few months later, the General's family fled Iraq via Turkey and took refuge in Europe.

The strange thing is, despite being victimized by Sadaam, they still respect him - for his bravery and loyalty. So, Sadaam will live in the hearts of Iraqi's for generations to come; but they don't want Al-Qaida to fill the vacuum. The Americans are getting things right at last.

Some folks used the parrot phrase - There are no military solutions to the ethnic conflict - against the Sikh separatism in Punjab too. A fellow Sikh policeman, Mr K P S Gill, took over the operations and proved they were wrong. Punjabis now enjoy freedom and get on with their lives.

Are we allowed to draw a parallel with them in our own conflict? Yes we are and we are winning. When did you last here someone saying, "there is no military solution," to our conflict, folks, apart from Mano Ganeshan, who claim to defend the smarter Tamils - the urban, well-connected, journalists, and of course NGO's - while staying away from this section of Tamils - peasants, low-caste Tamils, farmers, labourers?

That is why I admire MR. He stood firm and stuck to his guns and we are winning. Parrots must seek an alternate abode. please!

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is a great victory for all Sri Lankans. Don't say politics this and that and try to reduce this victory. Viduthalaithiv is the largest LTTE sea Tiger base in the region. Sea Tigers will never be the same again.

Theruwan saranai to everyone in the army, navy, airforce, STF, commandoes, SF, DPU, LRRP, police, homeguards, civil defence force and all other units of forces.

May this victory be a stepping stone to many victories to come.

I hope JVP will learn to respect soldiers if they can't respect the law. JVP killed 100,000 people and again trying to do "kadaakappalkaari" things. I will be happy if these JVP guys are killed like in 1989 and burnt on tyres. Communism is dead. They should accept that. Which idiot will stike for 5000 Rupees when the country is fighting a war like today? It is not fair.

  30. Why doesn't SLAF or DPU units blast some culverts on the way from Pooneryn to Akkarayan to Kilinochi roads.

This will make transport much more difficult.

Also a great way to really squeeze LTTE at this point is to do a good hit and runs from Jaffna to Pooneryn on Sea Tiger bases.

Do exactly what LTTE does to the Navy camps.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "Why doesn't SLAF or DPU units blast some culverts on the way from Pooneryn to Akkarayan to Kilinochi roads."

This will affect the civilian population more than the LTTE. We don't want the civilians to have problems against SL forces. If the civilians think that both sides are the same and SLA is no better than LTTE, that's not going to help us.

Anyway looks like SLA has done well here, particularly the commandos who ambushed and directed artillery at fleeing LTTE cadres. The casualties from these attacks seem to be very high.

You think so, ga. He certainly is an unhappy man. Why he chose today - the day we won this crucial battle - to air his anger, is a mystery.

If he is a soldier, he should sound happy.

He doesn't say how he got injured - in battle or while experimenting.

I thought he was an ex Tiger, becuase they can get injured. Then he says he had been Iraq, but does not say for what.

So, I conclude he may be a mercenery. I may be wrong and an explantion is welcome to change all that.

He may be a failed arms dealer too. They are disappointed people at this point of time.

He did not just pick on me; he picked on everyone with a very lame agrgument.

It looks like he wants everyone to be soldiers and in an extreme sense, to be engaged in battles too, as he claimed to have done.

I don't know who is going to fill the vaccum left by teachers, doctors, engineers etc, in the event people leaving their jobs for an army career.

I think this guy is someone who has punctured himself that appears to be a case of serious self-harm. He is losing, yes, air - and it is vital for his existence.

ga, if you know him, extend a pair of friendly hands to the guy. He certainly needs help.

    Some Perspective:

In 30 years of WAR + Genocide, Sri Lankan racist blundering army has finally made some recognizable accompishments against LTTE. Well done. Actually, impressive.

However, it is not LTTE vs Sri Lanka Army. There are other countries involved with ulterior motives aiding the incapable Sri Lankan army.

    Let's see.

    Early 80s,
    ==========
    Sri Lanka VS LTTE
    Winner: LTTE

IPKF + Sri Lanka VS. LTTE
    Winner: LTTE

    The 90's, 2000
    ========
Sri Lanka Jaysikrui operation + Some Foriegn Country Military hardware, training, Jets, Gunships, Ships

    VS.

    LTTE

    Winner: LTTE

    Today
Sri Lanka + India military tech, Pakistani Tech, American Hi-tech, satellites, radar, hardware, China + small others +Iran

    VS.

    LTTE

    Winner: undecided after 2+ years.

    hehhehe

1 LTTE vs 10 different countries + technology + empty shell sri lanka...

No clear winner in site.. reminds me o fhow things were b4 ceaseless waves started in the past at decisive stages... we are nearing a decisive stage.... bt don't be sad. Vidalthaltheevu jusst "fell" to the might of SLA....in otherwords fell to 10 country intelligence + hardware + the stooges.

While giving all credit to the SDLF for this recent achievement in capturing V.base I must beg to differ about the JVP’s stand on the Rs 5000 pay rise. Politicians expect people to have a go at another political party for being extravagance or demanding more money for the suffering people.JVP too supported the war effort of this government and the people in power too have a responsibility to tighten their belts, which is sadly lacking. Though there is a war going on in the North there should also have normal life and good governance in the South where people have to express their feelings and demands from the government in power. Life must go on as normal and we haven’t come to the stage where one lives in the bunker and the war is fought by our brave young and the politicians have no right to exploit their noble deeds and sacrifices to be exploited and to do nothing in the rest of the country. Country must function well then only the country could support the war effort with the taxed income generated. JVP has come a long way by accepting the political path and I hope Karuna clan will follow this example.

  59. As most are saying, 'the rainy season is about to begin'. This will surely slow down the SLA but if the LRRP and the Air force combine together and attack the so called LTTE elites they will be under huge pressure and they might start to think about themselves before taking offensive actions against SLA. If the army holds it off till the rainy season is over then the LTTE can be completely defeated.

If the SLA hold on(which is one of their primary objectives) till the rainy season is over they will run out of supplies and the lower ranked LTTE will try to escape.
LRRP should be a key factor in the coming month or two and more snipers on the battlefield would yield the harvest(as moshe dyan says) during the rainy season.
With the increasing number of recruits to the SLA this war will end soon.but will we be able to eradicate terrorism??terrorism has become the headache of the world.what do you say parakrama,moshe,hemantha,qrious...........???

this is my opinion about the strike. i dont think that any of the parties from the south have connections with the ltte.(i might be wrong) i think what jvp is trying to is show that they are still active as a party and they have the power that they had before the break down. since wimal weerawansha is with the gov. he will try his best to break his power.
the strike did not go as planned because they(JVP) dont have the manpower they used to have since most of the JVP guys broke away. but i should say that these strikes have a direct impact on the war front because then the soldiers might start to think that the south has forgotten the war.

    virusalert,

You are right this conflict will be over soon; I don't think terrorism will raise its ugly head in near future in our country again.

However, unless appalling inequalities - something Tigers exploited on along racial lines - are addressed, it may surface again in another form, may be down south.

I am a sceptic about the post-war prosperity that we all dream of.

Europe, America and Japan prospered after wars. These societies had one special thing in common, among a few others - discipline.

    Do we have it?

  65. Moshe,

    You said:

“they have enough money and trasport systems provided they have an area to operate”

“in early 1980s tigers didn't have so many arms; but they had fighters; EXTREMELY dedicated ones. from there they built on. they needed small arms then. gradually they built on it to have SAMs, TAF and ships. they can do it again.”

Mate, to be honest, it was the incompetence and arrogance of JRJ government that strengthened the LTTE. Their answer to the problem was to burn Jaffna library and let Black July happen, how pathetic?? No wonder LTTE went from strength to strength.

I firmly believe that even on their heyday, LTTE’s strength was over estimated by cowards amongst our politicians. LTTE also projected themselves as an invincible force. But they never were as strong as they say they were.

If we had strong and clever political & military leadership, we could’ve dealt with this problem a long time ago.

JRJ could’ve nipped it in the bud…but he didn’t, I don’t think he was as clever as people make him out to be!

My point was that we have to dismantle LTTE’s military machine so that they can’t carry out conventional assaults on our bases. We can’t stop there, we have to capture ALL the land that they control and we have to aggressively patrol it. Then it’ll be very difficult for them to come back.

This all depends on our future military & political leadership. Will they think about the country and our future for a change…I have no idea! However, judging by the thugs and thieves who are in power now I’d say MR, GR & SF belong to a species that is almost extinct…so let’s wait and see.

I’ve offered my help to defence ministry a few times but no reply. If you need any help in whatever you do to help them, give us a shout, we are ready and willing!!

  66. Qrious,

Qrious, I read all your posts with interest but I have to disagree with you on this military solution mate!

Look, in the past 30 years we’ve had 2 insurgencies in the south (JVP) and too many to count in the north and east. There definitely is a problem here!

The solution is not entirely a military one. We need a political solution. However, LTTE are terrorists and we should never talk with terrorist. Kill them all first and then we have to sit down and think about a political solution.

By the way, my political solution would be to drop a bomb on the parliament when all the morons are in there, but then again, that’s just my view!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Virus Alert,

The answer to your question is that I agree with Lt. Gen. Fonseka! He said that once we finish with LTTE, there might be a low level insurgency for years to come. I think, once we capture all the land that they control, they will go back to killing civilians (especially in border villages). This where the political solution has to kick in. We need to bring up the economy of the country. As people get richer they will forget about insurgencies and LTTE and LTTE will vanish.

But the million dollar question is this: Is our political leadership capable of getting rid of corruption and doing something constructive for the country?

    Well, what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Sharp,

Is this your pathetic attempt to give a moral boost LTTE terrorists (including terrorists living abroad)?

In the early 80’s it wasn’t Sri Lanka vs LTTE, it was Sri Lanka vs LTTE + India or have you forgotten now? Have you forgotten the food drops of Indian Air force? Have you forgotten about Indira Ghandi? Or are you just a kid who’s talking about thing that he’s not entirely sure about?

As Sam Perera pointed out, just because Sri Lanka bought arms from these countries doesn’t mean that they are fighting alongside us against LTTE.

You arrogant little s***, do you really think you can even think about fighting SLA if SLA had open support from USA?

All I can say to you is “ane matto…”

Don’t poke your nose into stuff you don’t have a clue about, it just goes to show us how stupid you are.

Nothing will change the fact that today LTTE got the s*** kicked out of them. SLDF didn’t even let the “tactically withdraw” in peace. LTTE deserves nothing less!

Thanks for the reply. There is some truth in it. JVP has come a long way from what it was. But they are still following the hardline approach in regards to the strike. If the president wants to really talk to the JVP their leader Somawansa was in the same flight as the President, coming from London. We informed his staff about Somawansa travelling in the humbler economy class.MR would have given him a seat and had a little chat that does wonders to any government in power, specially if you meet your country man abroad, away from the usual bloody arena of politis at home.
We know as a fact, where my partner was present when Mr Amarasinghe defended the gosl policy on the war in the north and seeking the EU ban lifted on the trading tariffs etc when he met the British MPs.So they can’t be traitors or anti national. They will not support any government who are not transparent and honest and very rigid about this. There are very hardliners in the party that is calling the shot and we hope that they will accept the sophistication of a modern democracy, but they are painfully getting there slowly.

    Parakrama

We have a long way to catch up with the Americans and Japaneese because they are very dedicated to their work, very serious in life, proud of their achievement, but not of their so called culture like we do in SL and do the worst thing. We as a race too inclined to religion and believe in a culture we know nothing about, which has no relevance to day’s world and our conniving politicians of all hues play to the gallery on religion, thus putting wool over the eyes of our people, while they squander the nation, having no interest in the true welfare of it’s citizens. I am speaking from my experiences and I give full marks to the innocent people who is putting up with it.Good night from London!

  75. Parakrama,

Thanks for the constructive comment mate.

I think you slightly misinterpreted when I said - military solution.

I didn't mean that it is the right one for all. It is, however, the right one for the LTTE and the JVP too, but not for the legitimate grievances of the ordinary law-abiding folks.

The JVP must be dealt with in a language they understand while resorting to ugly means. Just imagine the wasted live during the past thirty years by these morons. Look where their former leaders are now: they are all die-hard capitalists now, aren't they? Most JVPers become who they are because of nothing but envy - of cousre, up until they become a part of the very society they hold a grudge against.

They killed so many innocent folks just because they chose to be in the UNP in the late eighties. They prolonged the university education of ordinary folks by years by endless stupid strikes.

Their leader, late Wijeweera, wore a hat exactly like the legendary Argentinian, Che. But he was nowhere near the great man in deeds.

Che is still worshipped world over, not becasue of his socialist ideals, but for being who he was and what he did, based on what he believed in. Che didn't mimic anyone; a trained medical practioner by profession, he was his own man who inspired millions world over. Wijeweera didn't have an island-wide audience, let alone a global one.

The need of the hour in the post-war Sri lanka is discipline. Unless discipline is instilled in our national psyche, we are doomed to fail - and again.

There are a catalogue of ugly injustices happenning in our society: the disabled are laughed at; the vulnerable are exploited; the thugs are looked up to. All major races are guilty of this collective sin. So, it is unfortunate that some folks exaggerate the race element in appallingly cruel discrimination that exist in our society. This is what the bloody Tigers exploited for decades.

You seem to think of this conflict as a something of a sports series. It is not. It is more like a sordid soap-opera.

The only reason the SLA never conclusively beat the LTTE was because of political blundering in military matters. A US analyst very clearly identified this as 'SL never faught it as a war, but as a popularity contest among teenagers, while the LTTE faught total war each and every time'. This was very true and obvious in the CBK era when she went to war wanting to win a Nobel peace prize.. Yet, the LTTE never won, and instead lost everything.

Victory in this is accomplishing what you set out to get. The only time the LTTE even temporarily managed to occupy a landscape was when the SLG let them. And at those times the guns turned on the Tamils themselves and thousands disappeared in torture and elimination progroms.

After 30 years of fighting, all is lost. The Tamils are the 4th smallest minority behind the Indian (estate) tamils and moors. Qualitatively depleted, quantitaively reaching point of being overwhelmed by other cultures. If you think extinction is victory, then join the dodo and dynasaur.

SLDF needs to branch out the decapitation strategy at this point. Moving deeper into enemy space is going to become an expensive excercise unless some infra-structure is taken out. Perhaps it would be fun to limit the honchos movement wise and then hit some heavy hardware that is difficult to replace, before moving infantry into range.

It is time to end this sordid soap opera, which unfortunately is looking more and more like a cricket match dominated by Sanath and Kalu's batting.
Time to take out some bridges and culverts and then pulvarize any hardware stuck within range...

  81. parakrama,

    aprreciate your comments.

yes it was incompetency on the part of JRJ AND SIRIMA TOO. but my point is, IT CAN EASILY HAPPEN IN A WORSE SCALE WITH JRJ'S NEPHEW!!

we have to capture all land no doubt. but killing tigers is MORE important than capturing land. otherwise as i said they can easily reverse our victories.

also in 1980s when SLA was doing well (apart from killing the MAX), tigers escaped to TN, regrouped, trained and came back! today there is little chance of that happening. but tigers can use MANY other tactics to buy time IF THEY survive in large numbers.

anyway SLDFs are now more into a PKS as the army commander and dayan J quite correctly said recently.

having said that i must add this too. recently APM attacks on SLA has reduced drastically in the mannar front. bcos SLA was advancing at a rate LTTE thought never possible. this made then a step behind SLA in laying APMs (in their territory of course). by the time they HAD TO DO IT, they had to deploy their "elites" to do this MENIAL work. even then it was toooo late. our commandos whacked them as you know and captured more than 100 APMs!!!

this was a HUGE benefit of NOT languishing to maximise the harvest. but we can use the SLAF to harvest as we did yesterday.

about the opportunity i had, it was a one-off thing. i too have applied for the contribute your knowledge thing and waiting. i know some have got letters. AFAIK this is an initiative my a VERY high ranking guy. if they look for Phds ONLY they are not doing justice.

1.Your first question: Answer : No.
    2. No.
    3. If open support from USA was there, no. But how shameful it is that Sri Lanka begs foreign countries for money, help, like a used, ripped up concubine does for money? Just climaxing at the thought of getting help from another country because SLA is no match 1 vs 1 against LTTE.

and it's "you arrogant little s*-h*-a*-r*-p, you only had 3 stars.
    ;)

    Last paragraph,

You seem very pessimistic despite your writing. Why do you emphasize "today" that LTTE got its ass kicked? You don't need to answer this.

However, since you seem to be one of the few here who seems to "attempt"to engage in proper civilised dialogue, please answer this question:

    Take the following scenario:

    1. You are beaten, and bullied by a nasty bully.
    2. You attempt dialogue several times, only to be beaten up again and lose your livlihood, and are afraid to go to school.
    3. You request the school admin and police to help you, but they only watch you get pummelled away by the bully.

(4). After several years of this. you decide to strike back, and with vengence and no other way out of this misery.

Answer me honestly, if you are of that calibre,

in (4) - would you consider your actions justified?

1)You ask for what you don't solely own for your exclusive ownership and you are not going to get it any form us.

2)You ask for a disproportionate share and you are not going to get it from us.

3)You use weapons to take what you don’t own by force and you will be resisted by us.

  84. Dear Qrious,

"Adelade Balasingham's photograph is there too. Is she dead?

"Hope someone will interpret it for us."

Someone meaning somebody who can read Tamil who is willing to translate for anti-Tamil types here? For anti-Tamil types who use Tamil terms like "Ponnaya" as insults?

The article is about the release of a book written by Adele Balasingham. She is not dead.

    from another thread:

"There are times we must let our gut feelings get things right while keeping both the head and heart in suspension mode. I am sure most of the Tamils whom I met do just that. They were hurt, humiliated, yet are prepared to forget, forgive and move forward. A perfect adaptation to the 21st century."

Most Tamils I've met don't think along your above lines. Instead there is a burning question which has been left unanswered, "Will the Tamils be subject to another terror like the 1983 riots again in the future?"

Have you asked yourself this question? Have any Sinhalese who claim to be non-racist asked themselves this question?

Answering this question will necessarily involve answering another question, "Have the conditions which produced the 1983 riots changed, or do they still exist?" Can you answer this question?

Has the anti-Tamil racism which produced the riots been eliminated, or is it still there? Can it be found within this very blog?

  85. Dear wijepala,

Thank you for the information on the pathivu web site regarding Mrs Balasingham.

With regard to the remark about the racism against Tamils on this blog, I have to disagree with you.

There are a lot of folks who constantly fight against racism against Tamils here and I am one of those.

I am sure you agree with the fact that we are anti-LTTE and we don't hide that sentiment.

At the same time, we take a very sharp swipe at other social ills that transcend the race - discrimination of all forms based on caste, class, education, age, financial position.

This is a defence blog and the above aspect starts as a trickle as of now. It will grow into a stream as this war and bloodshed draws to a close in the coming months. Because it has the potential to create another menace.

    Thank you and take care.

"(4). After several years of this. you decide to strike back, and with vengence and no other way out of this misery."

You forgot the next few steps:

    5) You establish several militant groups to oppose the bully. The neighbor next door (whom we'll call "India") gives you full support and lets you gather and train in his backyard.

    6) One of your groups (which we'll call "LTTE") decides that it is the sole representative of your people and brutally massacres the other groups. This group is left alone to fight the government and slowly gets cornered.

    7) The neighbor directly steps in to beat down the bully and to save you. You respond by declaring war on your neighbor and join forces with the bully to drive away the neighbor. Later you murder the head of household of your neighbor.

    8) You continue fighting the bully by recruiting children as cannon fodder and by murdering any of your people who disagree with you. You don't realize that you are turning into a bully.

    9) I forgot to mention that this war against the bully is dragging out for over 2 decades and is totally debilitating your people. You do absolutely nothing to change the perception of the bully. You get into a worse situation than you were before you started fighting back against the bully.

If you, Mr. Wijayapala, are sick and dying due to a viral infection. Do you spend money to stop the symptoms (fever, hallucinations) or spend money to acquire a cure? You have limited time, to buy only one of covering and suppressing the symptoms, or get to the viral root cause that is responsible for your symptoms and get rid of the virus there. There, now I have given you a question to answer as well. But, please, answer the question in its own context..

  90. The next sea tiger base Iluppaikkadavai lies ten km north to Vidattalthivu. 58 advancing 5-6 miles from south and 57 operating six miles to the East it will be just a matter of days before it falls.

And 57 is advancing at three miles South of Tunukkai. Some major battles would be expected there. Uyilankulam lies another three miles away. Then Vellankulam (10 km north of Iluppaikkadavai) on the coast would be extremely vulnerable.

Kilinochchi and Jaffna lagoon is just 20 miles away from Uyilankulam while Poonerin is just 22 miles away. No large civilian concentrations in between (mostly jungle terrain). Our Special Forces, Deep Penetration Units and Commandos are going to have a field day. Remember there are just 6 more miles to Uyilankulam from where 57 is at present. I expect some qualitative changes of the way the war is being carried on (some comments made by Special Force at LNP should be noted).
Earlier, I ridiculed a comment made by Moshe suggesting a blockade of logistic movements between East and West. But I have to confess that he was partially correct. The error in his case was the position. He was suggesting A9 or the area east of A9. But more towards West along the Palampiddi- Tunukkai line such a scenario is most likely (at least to me). If successful it would cripple LTTE Sea going ability on the East coast much sooner than expected and arms from Indian trawlers would be a thing in the past. If our Navy is capable of blocking the Mulathivu sea LTTE will be doomed to fail sooner rather than later.

This would be the Rosy picture I can draw considering the motion of a one player. But the other player LTTE is down but not out yet. One should not underestimate their capabilities (should not overestimate either). They will counter attack (they have no choice). When? Where? How? Will they successful? I am biased. So my gut feeling says that they are going to fail. But eelamists might think otherwise.

My two cents. You guys may agree with me or may not. Either way constructive input would be welcomed.

  92. Dear sharp,

"Dude, where are you coming from? You are way too emotional and unable to answer a question that was not even meant for you."

You sounded like the emotional one whining about the bully and getting spastic about vengeance. I was putting things in the present context namely that the LTTE has gotten the Tamils into the current mess.

"If you, Mr. But, please, answer the question in its own context.."

The answer to your above situation is straightforward- you spend money on the cure that addresses the viral root, not something that suppresses the symptom.

To put the above in proper context, the pro-LTTE bootlickers in the diaspora have foolishly supported a criminal and fascist entity that has utterly failed to address the root problems of the Tamils in Sri Lanka and has actually worsened ethnic relations. The LTTE instead brought a war that has crippled the Tamils and have made them into a race of refugees and IDPs. That is hardly a cure. There's your context.

The two most important animals in LTTE are Pottu and Vazapizza. If our guys got the two, 60% of LTTE is gone. We should not forget that prize.

On the other hand, the same applies. If LTTE got MR, peace loving Sri Lankans would be back in square one. Therefore, it is very important to protect MR, Gota, SF, and the heads of the forces and the assets with biggest effort possible.

This Lal Kantha guy, someone should take him to IDH, and make him stay in the hospital for some time. What a clown who sacrificed his hundreds of thousands of poor working-class people to test their strength (which is dwindling).

  94. Mr. Wijeyapala,

I thank you for your 4th paragraph.

    The following is hopefully enlightening:

When the human body fights an viral infection, the body feels

symptoms(high fever, flegm, coughing) when the anti-bodies naturally

form to attack the virus that is wreaking havok on the body.

Ususally, others don't know of it until the symptoms make them take notice

something is wrong with the body.
If there were no symptoms, the person would die without anyone

knowing what happened to them, except for the "virus", which would

know very well what it did and happy it got away with it. The

killing would have gone unknown to the outside world. Unfortunatley for the virus, it is not the case.

However, the virus would have a tough time, with the anti-bodies

fighting back against it, and it becomes a much larger known issue.

So you see, without the antibodies causing the symptoms and fighting

back against the virus, it is a slow, at times spontaneous

destruction of that human without anyone else knowing what is

happening to them. Even you would not know of it all, if it weren't

for the anti-bodies that naturally formed to fight back the viral

    infection.

Why do you think that the so called "bootlickers" Diasporah

numbering in the several hundred thousands, "so foolishly" support

the anti-bodies.. ahem, I mean the rebellion?

  104. Death by Kerosine

The Bottomline columnist, D S B Jeyaraj comes up with a theory to explain the 1-4 base - how it got that. According to him, it is a floating base; any base where Prabha stays is called 1-4 base, according to this learned gentleman.

    Then he divulged the secret code of the three top commanders: Prabha - Hotel Alpha; Mahattay - Mike Alpha; Kittu - Kilo Delta;

However, Jeyaraj does not divulge the code name for other top commanders, leaving a room for people with curiosity to poke their nose in it.

Being one of those, I think the code names for other commanders may take this form: Chelvam - barber kappa; Baluraj - wife Beta; Soosai - buster Delta; Pottu - flesh Eta; illanthirayan - active Pi.

Jeyaraj went on to say that Prabha moves with around 40 odd bodyguards while one of them carrying a can of kerosene. He implies that Prabha is going to take the course of action that Hitler took in the similar circumstances.

As far as I know, it was petrol that burned Hitler beyond recognition. The effectiveness of the death by kerosene is yet to be seen. I have a feeling it is going to be a slow death. So, if this information is correct, Prabha still wants to live as long as he can even when his mortal body is on fire.

In his latest article, Jeyaraj goes all the way to depict a picture of invincibility of Prabha, citing his old famous escapes. He is one of those who contirbued so much in creating the mythical figure, that is Prabha, in the past by disproportionate glorification at the expense of real Prabha.

Jeyaraj clearly loves some top commanders and loathes the others. For instance, he loves Baluraj and hates Chelvam; he loves Kitty and hates Pottu. If you read between the lines, the pattern is clear: the more approachable they are to him, the brighter they are in the battlefield.

It is customary in his columns to make a little mockery of our commanders and battle strategies. The latest article is no exception.

Jeyaraj is someone who has mellowed over the years. He is walking along the tight rope of journalism while carrying the pole of racial sentiment in his hands for the balancing act. This manouerver accounts for him being on both sides, from time to time.

Kerosene theory is Jeyaraj's own invention. The commanders who closely worked with Prabha knows much more than Jeyaraj does about Prabha. Karuna, for instance, once said that the big brute was so nervous during the Jayasikurui that he was contemplating on escaping to South Africa. He went on to say that Prabha was shaking - physically - in fear at that time.

Who do we believe? Jeyaraj, is after all, a journalist, isn't it?

  105. Dear Sharp,

    1. You are beaten, and bullied by a nasty bully.
    2. You attempt dialogue several times, only to be beaten up again and lose your livlihood, and are afraid to go to school.
    3. You request the school admin and police to help you, but they only watch you get pummelled away by the bully.

"(4). After several years of this. you decide to strike back, and with vengence and no other way out of this misery."

I was a bully @ school ! I mean in real school, but never been racist! ( I have Tamil and Muslim friends)

I, with some guys around me bullied my own class mates!( I did apologised to them later) I was popular @ school so some teachers tolerate my behaviour too. Some of the guys who I bullied stood up to me and gave it back to me.

With the time pass I realised I am a D#ck-Head! And after all the kicking and screaming we all realised instead of kicking each other if we all get bond we can kick some big ars@! Even few years older to us and that's what we did! (Good old days!)

My point is, Sinhalese now understand Tamils are not there to be bullied and Tamils have proved that they will and can fight back if they got bullied. It is time us to get together and kick some serious ars@! (Politics are different and if the public change their attitude then they can change the politics too)

I mean, India will be the next big thing in the world! You don't agree with me? Have a look @ IPL! Or have a look @ the Rich List! India has 123,000 US$ millionaires. It is up to us to be united, work hard and get developed along side India. We have a better chance to develop along side India than Pakistan or Bangladesh or any other country around us. Because we are small enough to get fixed quickly and we are lot smart and we adapts very quickly.

The Cure = Two Seperate states, that in the future can hopefully work with eachother

NO, cure is not two separate states but one small happy joint with respect to all! You know why? because even u agreed in ur recommended cure that u only hope it will work! " hopefully work with eachother!"

I know it is not easy, but it is time VP realise that Tamils have gain enough respect and Sinhalese have grown up! Ex. Karuna, Pilliyan and East, No bashing of Tamils after even bombing Kandy Temple or any Tamil or Muslim bashing by public (politics and war different issue) for last 10 years or more!

If VP and the gang stick to their motto that Sinhalese are racist so Tamils want a land of Tamils only then he is the biggest racist of all! And the dumbest of all too!

    To wijayapal,

Most Tamils I've met don't think along your above lines. Instead there is a burning question which has been left unanswered, "Will the Tamils be subject to another terror like the 1983 riots again in the future?"

Have you asked yourself this question? Have any Sinhalese who claim to be non-racist asked themselves this question?

Answering this question will necessarily involve answering another question, "Have the conditions which produced the 1983 riots changed, or do they still exist?" Can you answer this question?

Has the anti-Tamil racism which produced the riots been eliminated, or is it still there? Can it be found within this very blog?

NO, I don't think! that the Tamils be subject to another terror like the 1983 riots again in the future!

    do they still exist?"

Ofcoz they DO exist mate! No country in the world is full of saints! Every country in the world has a fir share of their own dumb cun#s! The thing is majority of Sinhalese have moved on, grown up and open minded! And majority of Tamils and Muslims too!

Yes, racism highly visible in this very blog! From BOTH sides! So, both Sinhala and Tamil idiots who think they are better than other GROW UP U stupid cun#s!

    You said:

“If open support from USA was there, no. But how shameful it is that Sri Lanka begs foreign countries for money, help, like a used, ripped up concubine does for money? Just climaxing at the thought of getting help from another country because SLA is no match 1 vs 1 against LTTE.”

Well this is from an organisation that is involved in extortion, human trafficking, drug trafficking, credit card fraud, prostitution, protection rackets etc. to earn a few dollars.

You should really do your homework before trying to discredit somebody else. As an LTTE supporter, you should never even attempt to discredit anybody else on moral grounds!

I have no problems spelling SHARP in public, that was a different word, think about it!

I emphasised “today” because until “today” you have been downplaying all your loses as “tactical withdrawals”. There’s no way in hell that you would abandon what you lost “today” in a “tactical withdrawal”, this is why I highlighted “today”. No pessimism intended as we have no reason to be pessimistic at this stage!!

Your actions can never be justified purely because they involved ethnic cleansing and terrorism. Nothing can ever justify ethnic cleansing and terrorism. Now don’t get into a big argument and try to whitewash LTTE with me. If you are going to defend LTTE with me, first read my previous posts. Your mates (shyam, bhairav & peter) have collectively confessed to LTTE being a terrorist outfit and to carrying out ethnic cleansing in border villages. So, the final answer is NO!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Moshe,

I agree with you completely! If people vote for JRJ’s nephew, it’ll have the same effect as voting to give north & east to LTTE and thereafter having a border conflict for many years to come.

Yeah, I understand your point about how LTTE could come back. My point was that if we capture all their land and the patrol it aggressively and the put a political solution together, then it would be hard from them to come back. But the chances of that happening under a new leadership is next to nothing, so we might as well kill as many tigers as possible while we have the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Amma Gahai/Gahawi,

Interesting post! But don't forget that there are burning questions to be answered on behalf of other ethnicities in the country. The root cause of this problem wasn't Black July. Black July was just the tipping point.

FVP used Black July to perfection for his goal which is to grab power by any means necessary. Southern politicians also played the race card to get hardcore Sinhala votes. So at the end of the day, powerful people from both sides are the ones responsible for this mess.

  141. Two websites so far failed to publish the news about capture of Vidattaltivu.
One is TamilNet, the other is Lankadissent.lk.

They are probably heart broken by this greate victory and pretend that they do not hear anything.

    Loosers, HOOOOO!

  142. Dear Qrious,

"I am sure you agree with the fact that we are anti-LTTE and we don't hide that sentiment."

And I am sure you agree with the fact that the anti-Tamil racists in the Sinhala community who call themselves "patriots" are the greatest benefit to the LTTE.

"There are a lot of folks who constantly fight against racism against Tamils here and I am one of those."

I would like to hear how you have fought against anti-Tamil racism. There were anti-Tamil riots in Trincomalee not that long ago- in April 2006- yet it took an unpleasant phone call from the Indian PM for Mahinda to wake up. There are people in this blog who use "Ponnaya" as a racist slur.

"This is a defence blog and the above aspect starts as a trickle as of now. It will grow into a stream as this war and bloodshed draws to a close in the coming months. Because it has the potential to create another menace."

I am glad that you see this threat. Things will not be peaches and cream simply from defeating the LTTE.

  143. I was amazed to see all the big guns of our defense establishment, GR,SF, the Air Force chief and Navy Guru in one room in Vavniya.. Are they crazy?? Have they not learned from Kobbakaduwa and the crowd’s death? This is one single strike where the whole military operation against the tigers can come to a dead halt just like with Kobbakaduwa and the crowd’s assassination. Please, some one drive some sense to our most important assets.. If they want to commend the troops please do so separately one at a time so that the tigers cannot launch a decapitating attack. Foolishly dead heroes do not serve any purpose to mother land
