Army closes in on Madu

Two fighting formations of the Sri Lanka army's 57th division have surrounded the Madhu church premises after a renewed round of fighting in the area. Troops leading the advance from Pandrivichchan have already secured two smaller churches in the area.

Meanwhile the holy statue of Virgin Mary has been moved from the Church premises to Thewayampiddi (currently under LTTE control) in the Wanni  after fighting erupted near Madhu church premises. According to Bishop Rayappu Joseph, the statue was moved to LTTE controlled territory to prevent it from being damaged by LTTE's own artillery fire.

The Liberation Tigers have been continuously shelling SLA positions in the region which are now situated 1KM-1.5KM from the church premises. According to military intelligence LTTE has deployed its heavy artillery guns in close proximity of Madhu shrine on a number of previous occasions, exploiting the cover of the no-war-zone. According to three LTTE cadres who surrendered to the armed forces on the 3rd, LTTE has deployed fighters from its Radha regiment, Malathi regiment (comprises entirely of women fighters) and its elite Charles Anthony regiment in the Madu sector.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Mi-24 helicopter gunships attacked an LTTE mortar launch pad in Andankulam region today afternoon. Details of any damages caused by this air raid are not yet available.

  1. Even if LTTE attack from the church SLA should not put it into dust as such an event will give much desired publicity and negatively affect SLA in long term. i.e. It would be short term gain but long term loss. Thus getting madu without damaging the church will be the real victory.

thats the exact way tearras wants us to think of the situation, there are other strategies to over come that, shelling the church is being irresponcible and all the sacrifices will be in vain by doing so.

  4. If it can be spared, then it should be. However, if there is no choice - e.g. if they use the roof of the church as a launching pad for mortars, artilery and sniper fire - then raise it to the ground. If the dalada maligawa was in the same situation (and the sacred relics have already been removed), i would say the same for it. Like sen is correct: without the relics we worship, it is just brick and mortar.

  14. Religion should not be considered at times of war, all that matters is human life, not a church, a temple or kovil, but the lifes of a soldier. Religion is for peace time and peace time only, if the tigers don't want there church destroyed why don't they move out of there.

Anyway there is no big diference in concept between these tigers and real LTTE terrorsits. Real tigers come to Colombo, live as normal people, and destroy some human lives and property at some point of time. Tigers here also start their bloging using some sinhala/english names and just want to disrupt the blog.

And another thing is SLA is in shortage of Ammunition ..and they still fighting where they they started the fighting ..they still 1.6 Km away from the Church ... but the SLA is hiding the actual casualties.. some sources is Mannar says that the Hospital is full with the wounded soldiers and not they are transport them to Anuradhapura Base hospital it means more than 500 wounded in recent clashes .... ...

You guys try to make yourselves feel better by saying that the GOSL's tactic is not to gain ground but to inflict casualties, my ass, The GOSL is finding out the hardway what a war with the strongest rebel movement in the world is like. The GOSL keeps lying through their teeth and dumb asses such as yourselves keep buying into it. I remember during jeyasukriya there were other modayas believing the bullshit that the government was feeding them at that time, this current phase is no different-the ltte will choose the time and the place to counterattack and when they do you will lose everything just like before.

  26. How Northern War Theatre is turning into a Sri Lankan Quagmire?

Doing the same in North, just as in the East is going to work-is the mistaken belief that is hovering major diplomatic, economic and militaristic burdens for the Government of Sri Lanka today, says Irasiah Ilanthirayan, the Military Spokesman of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Fighting a war for political reasons and unable to pull out due to the fanfare shown at the start of the warfare is turning the Northern war front into a quagmire for Sri Lankan forces according to Irasiah Ilanthirayan.

The LTTE Military spokesman talked to the Australian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation on the prevailing conditions at the Vanni theatre of war.

Excerpts from his comments as follows:

The war towards North that began on 15th of March 2007 in Vanni continues through this day. There is a vigorous war going on in several parts of Mannar and Manalaru.

The major thrust that was started in a similar manner on the 11th of October in 2006 in Killali, Mukamalai and Nagar Kovil areas have not advanced an inch. Attempts to advance from these areas are being made continuously. Under the guidance of our leader V.Pirapaharan, our Colonels and cadres are waging a vigorous fight utilizing the landscape and tactically appropriate ways to inflict casualties.

    Mannar

There are several reasons for Sri Lanka armed forces to keep targeting the areas around Mannar. In accordance with their agenda, bringing the greater Mannar area under their total control and opening a land route along Mannar-Poonaryn is important for them.

There is a striving to gain politically as well by trying to push towards the holy shrine of Madhu in the meantime.

If a specifically named military operation is conducted consisting of a mission and goal, it will also have to spell out the time limitations to accomplish them. In order to avoid being entangled in such circumstances, vigorous attacks and tactics utilizing large number of forces are increasingly being carried out in those areas.

Through these attacks they may attempt, to capture places that they could mention; or to gain politically, by bringing the holy area of Madhu under control.

They have not announced a time frame under these circumstances, but the push towards capturing the greater Mannar areas and securing a land route along them is on.

The armed forces are using maximum strength in these operations. 57th and 58th divisions along with several sub forces, guard troops, special forces, and artillery units are being put into action with great anticipation. But the war is grinding on over years.

What is the result of this ’serial’ operation? What are the loses to the armed forces during this war that has spanned over an year? And many analysts have begun to look into what the implications will be from these.

Mannar is our soil. We will fight for it intensely. Operation is underway to open a land route to Jaffna and also political purposes. But Sri Lankan forces are in deep angst on the prospects of capturing these areas as time goes by.

In these areas, in accordance with the prevailing conditions we employ several tactics by going forward and backward; such as attacking sideways after allowing to advance and attacking by intervening the moving forces.

The forces may arrive at Madhu tomorrow. The following day we will be in Mathawachchi. This is a rotating aspect. What losses will the forces encounter on every inch they advance.? Our cadres carryout their maneuvers in this war, by grasping the befalling realities when the Sri Lankan forces feel for their losses in the battlefield.

The Sri Lankan military base in Anuradhapura is being used as the command center for these continuous operations.

As I said earlier there are several reasons for these operations. Even though there is no clear vision, there are compelling political reasons. There are no accomplished victories to speak of and politics is preventing to curtail the operation that began with much fanfare. This is what the Mannar battlefield is today. They have fallen into a quagmire.

When Mahinda Rajapakse came to power, war was a sub text. But now it has taken full embodiment of his administration. His early dazzle was that over powering the Tigers will be easy. But Rajapakse has repeated the same historical mistakes made by previous Presidents and Armed Forces Generals.

With the set time frames within only them and not in the limelight, operations are being carried out by playing a mere numbers game. The same errors were made previously in the math of the war.

Propagandas trumpet that hundreds of Tigers are dying while just a few government soldiers are getting wounded. They are unable to avoid this. Propaganda is a tool to deflate and distract the feelings on inflation, distrust over the Rajapakse brothers and resulting confusions and mistrust of the government in the South when the truth of the war zones creeps amidst the iron clad on the media.

    Manalaru

As in Mannar, the Armed Forces are attempting to advance in Manalaru as well. But we have very strong defense structures there. And like Mannar, Manalaru is also our heartland. Our forces are engaged in two types of warfare there.

It is a suitable terrain for conventional as well as guerilla warfare. The Sri Lankan forces are stuck there too without moving forward.

    Mukamalai

As far as the Northern battlefront is concerned, skirmishes in Mukamalai, Kilali and Nagarkovil are of continuous daily occurrences. They are unable to inch forward while facing casualties here too.

Amidst this, they have built up the troop strength in the peninsula. This is due to their fear that the Tigers may land there and launch attack anytime. This is why their most trusted 53rd division elite forces are stationed there. Some support guard troops are also accompanying them.

The Air Force base is nearby. With this facility they could transport the wounded and attend to other logistics faster. But they are unable to do much with all these capabilities.

Success and failure in a battlefield is determined by meeting set goals. Since 2006, we have been succeeding on the warfare of attacking, upon cutting short the advancement of troops in the Northern front.

    East

The situation of the Sri Lankan armed forces is like ‘Thinking of unhusked rice and pounding the mortar’. Even the international watchers of this conflict are now saying this. Those who invested believing in the tactics of the Sri Lankan Army are now questioning the results. Part of this development is what has led to President Rajapakse and Military Generals to now say that time limits cannot be imposed on winning the Tigers, as previously thought of.

As far as the East is concerned our need is to wage a fight with intense. Within that limit we are managing to fight a war. This situation has forced the government to station troops there.

When armed forces have to be deployed elsewhere as new fronts open far from the East, government is facing the necessity of replacing them.

Doing the same in North, just as in the East is going to work-is the mistaken belief that is hovering major diplomatic, economic and militaristic burdens for the Government of Sri Lanka today. And the battle front is turning towards our favour at this critical juncture.

The Sri Lankan Armed forces have come to know of the intensity of our attacks over numerous times. For example, our attacks on the Anuradhapura and Katunayake Air Force bases are of one kind. Then there is ‘Unceasing Waves’. And there is another kind, in which our fight back against ‘Agni Kela’ stands proof of the parity of our forces on the balance of militaristic strength.

When such reality prevails, international analysts are vociferously pointing out to the Sri Lankan government the larger reality, that the Tigers have not lost their capability to carry out such attacks. Have you done anything to change the attack capabilities of the Tigers is what these analysts are asking the government.

  27. Congratulations! to the SLDF. It looks like a lot of progress has been made in the last few weeks despite inclement weather conditions.

As DN has reiterated on a number of occasions, gaining ground is not a priority. It is possible to weaken the terrorists sufficiently without making significant advances into the enemy areas if we take some control of the MSR. There must be a threshold beyond which the enemy would begin to crumble rapidly if the SLDF continues the pressure on steadily - not extravagantly. Patience is required.

The church building is brick & mortar, but every effort must be taken to preserve it in tact.

"ltte will choose the time and the place to counterattack and when they do you will lose everything just like before."

Thats the idea of a war isnt it? Otherwise both parties would sit back and relax.

As far as we know the LTTE chose the time and place in Muttur attack. It could not have been more wrong. Goes on to show that their decisions are not always correct as you may believe them to be. You've posted the same prediction over and over again in several of previous threads too. We can expect a counterattack but it is too early to predict the outcome just yet.

With Mannar and Vavuniya areas heating up, the LTTE might be planning to get a break through in Mullaitivu area... we have seen some increased LTTE activity, specially Sea Tiger activity in that area, right?

And also, whats the status of 'Theepan' after the SLAF attack on his command post? Has he ever come on radio again after that attack?

    Thanks in advance!

And btw, looks like the LTTE has accepted the fact that they cant defend Madu any longer... they want to deny the SLA the importance of capturing Madu, otherwise why would they order the removel of the statue?
But what they haven't understood is that, the "Statue" is not the SLA's objective... ;-)

  38. Security forces have two options to deal with the Madu church fiasco, since the tigers have committed the first sin by going there and hold up there with weapons, showing no respect to that place and then it would be in order to bomb that place and the second option is to surround them and starve them, out also drop salt in to the wells that have been dug for the pilgrims. Latter choice may tie down many troops. I am saying this as a Christian and I have no reservation about hunting a criminal terrorist element to all the way to hell or heaven.

I am a catholic but I have no respect for the bishop and his actions. Nevertheless I hope that the SLDF take care with this Madhu operation as it would provide great fuel to the enemies of GoSL. Same care should be taken when going against any historical kovil or building. We should give them a reason to claim that we are destroying "their" cultural heritage. (I have put their in quotation marks because Madhu belongs to all SL catholics not just the few tamil catholics who support the LTTE and their stupid bishop)

  40. kevin, since we have almost surrounded the church. Options are if there are any LTTE cadres left let them leave the Church premises through a pasage or completetly cut off the remaining LTTE cadres and wait. If they decide to remain inside the 1KM church premises there is not much they can do anyways. This way Church will not be harmed and we will save the lives of our troops. Church is only a political objective, it has no strategic military objective.

  47. I am not a Catholic but I believe the Our Lady of Madhu statue has a symbolism almost like the Buddha's tooth relic at the Dalada Maligawa. During the CFA period, many Sinhales Catholics used to visit this shrine. I believe the LTTE made a lot of money from these pilgrims. One of my aunts visited this shrine many times during this period. She showed me an identification card issued by the LTTE. Not sure why Bishop RJ moved the statue to LTTE controlled territory. After all this is not a Tamil statue or something associated with Tamil Catholics. It is important for all Sri Lankan Catholics, and most Sri Lankan Catholics live in Govt controlled territory.

  55. Guys,

Rayappu's drama at the Madhu church hasn't run out of steam yet; he makes the events more and more theatrical.

It is accepted norm that when a ship sinks, the last one to leave is its captain.

However, even before the Madhu church was on fire, the first one to run away was Rayappu, leaving the whole premises at the merchy of junior young priests; he didn't have time even to carry the holy statue of Mary with him. When dust settled down, he made another outrageous statement - the statue was taken to LTTE controlled areas to protect it from LTTE artillery fire. No priest in recent history, did what Rayappu has been doing to appease a bunch of terrorists.

The Vatican has not appointed an Archbishop for Tamil Eeelam yet. There is only one Archbishop for the country and he is Dr Oswald Gomis to represent the whole nation. Rayappu is his immediate subordinate. I cannot understand as to why Rt Rev Gomis tolerates this man's politicisation of Catholic cause for so long. Is he one in a million, on the pious scale? The Archbishop must exercise his authority to shut this rascal-in-white-robe up.

Catholic church has a well-established structure with a central figure at its helm. If the presence of a powerful central figure does not serve its purpose, the consequences will be unimaginable.

There is no central figure in Islam and anyone can interpret Holy Quran as he pleases. The birth of hundreds of militant groups is caused by this issue.

If the central figure of a Church keeps quiet for long for political reasons, he can trigger off a similar set of events in the long run. It is high time, the Archbishop took care of the shrine and banish Rayappu from the Mannar rice bowl.

When Vanni is liberated, people must crucify Rayappu on a cross in public. If I am given a chance, I don't mind pinning his manhood on the cross with a safety pin, for each lie he uttered for his own gains.

It’s among all people get together in the name of Christ or any good cause, I guess but bible never said about having a statue of Mary or worshiping her. I don’t want to get into finer points of any religion as it’s well past 2 am here in cold London. the essence of my point is, we must pursue any terrorists or criminal to any building, without endangering the innocent public. 61. Excellent progress on all three fronts…

Many LTTE sons of bitches killed, including a key honcho bitch in Sinnapandivirichchan (I had to copy and paste this name...there was no bloody way I was going to remember this cryptic name! LMSSAO!) and 11 other bitches under her control!

As for the Madu church, yes, we must safeguard that shrine to the degree possible, but I agree with patriots who said earlier (such as S-Sinhaya) that it is now only “brick and mortar” (especially given that the statue has been removed) and if LTTE takes refuge there and continues to attack our boyz, then Tallyho, I would even say call in the Kfirs/MiGs! After all, no terrorist has ever gotten away by holding up in a place of worship on this planet and if you guys recall, the Sikh separatist-terrorists thought by holding up in their holiest of holy shrine, the Golden Temple in Amritsar they could hold the Indian Army at bay…but we all know that ploy did not work…the IA sent in even the MBTs and just pulverized the place, killing over 1200 terrorists/militants (take your pick of word as I am not picky myself)! That actually was the watershed that broke the backbone of the “Khalistan separatist-terrorist” movement! Of course, the West was horrified and condemned the IA and Government of India for that reckless offensive, but did that condemnation last? No bloody way! Not only that, today the West is crawling to India’s doorstep to secure business deals that will make the Corporate America’s profit climb! This the hypocrisy and the profit motivated brutal culture of the powers that be of this planet – the whites ruled West!

Moral of the story: It is better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission!

    Well said mate…

Our Rev Gomis has been turning a blind eye to all what these bastards, Rayappu J and Kingsley S, have been doing all these years to support and nourish the LTTE.

Imagine the Indian Army was fighting a racially intolerant terrorist group in India and some of the Catholic clergy from that community in India was helping the terrorists against the IA? Imagine what the sheer fury and the wrath of the Hindu fundamentalists in India would be? Never mind the IA, the Hindu fundamentalists would gladly pick such priests and liquidate them with all damn impunity – they have done so in India on missionaries who they thought were anti-Indian (meaning also anti-Hindu) and to this day, many such cases remain unsolved. In one case, they dragged a white Christian missionary woman and her son from a car and set them on fire alive – and to this day, the Indian police have not been able to catch the culprits!

Well, we are the tolerant Sri Lankan, especially the tolerant Sinhela Buddhists and in my view, that has much to do with why this problem has festered this long (as Kevin insinuated earlier) and as such, it is high time in my view that the Sinhela Buddhists of Sri Lanka asserted their rightful place and liquidated all and sundry threats to Motherlanka, irrespective from what quarter it may be!

Yes....I have reason to believe that Shyam is finally telling the truth (for the 1st time since he started posting on this blog) According to startling new evidence uncovered by LTTE intelligence, it turns out that all the civilian massacres (all attacks from Aranthalawa to Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi attack and then more recently to Nugegoda, Kebithigollewa attacks) were carried out by Aliens from Mars. It seems that the Martians have a belief that sinhalese people should be eliminated from earth,(Please note that this belief is not shared by LTTE, no they are absolutely against it) so are carrying out these attacks. My sources have assured me that LTTE is doing everything within their power to stop these attacks. They will be launching a massive commando-type attack on Mars very soon, assisted by their F-18 squadrons, and the newly acquired B-2 squadrons.

Even the small number of tamil people who accepted VP as their freedom fighter would not accept his children as such. When the so called "freedom fight" was going on and scores of tamil children and young people were being killed ["martyred"] where were the children of the leader for whom they were being sacrificed? They were enjoying the luxuries of life in the developed world, receiving an education, etc. I expect VP's children not to be as brain-washed as their father. They must have had some influence from the developed countries who frown on terrorism (at least pay lip service against terroism). It is hard to imagine they would ever be accepted by the tamil people.

Sri Lanka military says heavy fighting in North killed 15 Tigers:

Sri Lanka military said today clashes between the troops and Tamil Tigers across the northern battle fronts killed 15 Tiger cadres and a soldier.

In Jaffna, in the late hours of Friday troops launched a series of attacks and destroyed seven LTTE bunkers ahead of the Muhamalai forward defense lines. Media center for National Security said the offensives inflicted heavy damages to the Tigers.

In Mannar, Air Force MI 24 helicopters targeted an LTTE mortar position on Friday afternoon in the Andankulam area destroying the target and killing two Tigers.

Five Tiger cadres were killed during confrontations in Welioya and troops recovered 218 anti- personnel mines during the search operations conducted in the area. One soldier was also killed and another was injured during the confrontations.

Meanwhile three soldiers were injured due to anti personnel mine explosion in the general areas of Madhu and Puliyankulam in Mannar.

Casualty figures cannot be verified independently as the access to the region is restricted. Sri Lankan government has stepped up its military campaign against the rebels since they called off the 2002 ceasefire agreement in January.

  104. The temporal and spiritual conquest of Tamils: Mahinda's book of dreams
    [Fri, 04 Apr 2008, 07:18 GMT]
MaduMore than security concerns, the sentiments of Tamil Christians and their mistrust of Sri Lankan State seem to be the impelling force behind the decision of taking away Our Lady of Madu from her abode. Those who could look at how Kathirkaamam was confiscated from the predominance of Tamils and how the ancient temples behind the Tamil Saiva myth are inside ‘High Security Zones’, could understand the fear of Tamil Christians. The question is whether the International Community and India, which contribute to the military option, don’t understand or don’t want to understand the fact that if there is anything to be defeated militarily in Sri Lanka, it is the chauvinism of the Sri Lankan State

First of all this is quite incorrect. They didnt withdraw without firing a single shot. And they did not do it voluntarily. They were forced to withdraw and they suffered casualties in the process. According to your comment LTTE won in the east lol.

    "
if the SLA can beat the LTTE on those areas easily then y can't they capture the north easily ..they fighting more than a year to capture MADU .....?"

We have answered this question many times before. Read the previous articles and comments with open eyes and you may understand why.

On the same grounds you raised teh question, let us ask you this. If the LTTE could hold the army back for one year in Madu, why could not they do the same in the east? Dont say they didnt want it.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Mathamathica,

Thanks for the Hindi meaning/understanding of my name. Both meanings, ripe or perfect, sound pukka enough for me. I am certainly not Kachcha...

However, my name has caused so much "noise" in this blog (as Kiri pointed out) it is becoming a bit boring. So I will endeavour to ignore any comments about my name and focus back on SL defence matters and other related debates.

I agree with Gen. Fonseka's statement that the statue being removed by the LTTE shows that they have lost overall control of the area.

Don't agree with your statement that the Tamil people being the "hereditary enemy". Enemy of whom? Could you elaborate please?

    ReplyDelete
  109. I have seen very good argument again. That is LTTE is purposely holding the Madu area and even they can do it for more than a year. Surely they will do, but the problem is with the current dead ratio (at least 10 LTTErs per day) they will have to lost 4000 carders (I know that we are killing our own tamil brothers and sisters and it is very heart breaking to understand, but what to do....when they converted to barbarism, we need to eradicate).
So...please don't day dream friends. Tell your LTTE to come to negotiation table now and win a maximum power devolution. Otherwise you would get nothing, wasting your so called liberation struggle after sacrificing more than 80,000 lives.
Take my advise seriously...This is Mahinda's time...NO ONE CAN CHANGE IT. DON"T THINK OF IT....

    ReplyDelete
  110. Piyal,

Noble as it is, the LTTE will not come to the negotiating table as long as VP is taking space on the planet. Even if he does, it would not be sincere; he will have ulterior motives like buying more time to re-group, etc. Yes it is tragic that lives from both sides are being destroyed, but there seems to be no other option.

This seasoned terrorist does not know how to negotiate; he does not have any one to represent him either. Anton and Selva are both no more. There remains no more educated, eloquent or articulate communicator in his ranks who could negotiate. He is used to having his own way for years; he can’t find it in himself to be civil for once and think outside his “box”.

His reign of terror, not only against his enemies but also within his own group, has begun to backfire on him already. There is no one who has the nerve to challenge him if they think he could be wrong. So they follow him blindly to their death. Lack of correction is the beginning of the downfall of any leader. VP is doomed by his own making. Therefore the LTTE is also doomed because of the stranglehold VP has over the LTTE to the point that VP has become synonymous with LTTE.

If the reverend wanted the statue looked after, he would have taken the 1-2km option. May be he was forced to take the 50-60km option. But that is unlikely judging by his fan-club.

  122. The Rayappu Syndrome among the clergy

Rayappu Joseph is seeking attention for all the wrong reasons and getting it in kind.

There are Rayappus' among our own Buddhist clergy too: the chaps who are eager to drive cars; the chaps who are fond of weight-lifting to improve the physique; the chaps who look at eye-catching women with dripping saliva and fixed gaze, to name but a few.

These self-righteous faith-traitors have one thing in common; their presence in the realm of religion is not a voluntary one. They may have ended up there due to economic reasons, a coded-word for poverty, not to upset these holy men.

I happened to be in a family alms giving event in Galle last year. There was a group of juvenile priests among senior priests. I watched their behaviour with interest: they were very hyper-active; made funny remarks for any mistake on the part of seniors; giggled without end even during the speech of the chief priest.

Judging by this mode of behaviour in public, my friends and I predicted their behaviour in private. It is pretty simple; they may be fondling each other's balls, when senior priests are not around.

These little chaps are not going to stay in this isolation for long.

It is the same with some of the Catholic priest too, especially if their elvetion to priesthood is for economic reasons. They just take time to derobe themselves to be laymen and run away with women.

Priests of this league are neither religious nor patriotic; they are simply opportunists and therefore they must be treated with contempt. Their survival in the arena of religion is guaranteed by combination of luck and gullibility of public.

Rayappu Joseph has gone too far from this boundary line. His immediate superior is uncharateristically quiet on the issue. I wish the latter had a bit more courage to tell Rayappu not to politicize Madhu.

If I am elected as the Chief Minister by Pilleyan, I would sit Rayappu at the centre of a circle with nothing on him. Then I will drop some honey on his manhood and invite a column of ants to attack it, from all corners.

I will not stop at that; I will send the photographs to the Archbishop to protest at his inaction over this priest with a forked-tongue.

  123. In the battle areas of Madhu, what the coming days and weeks portend is no secret. Having denied the area for the military by resisting an advance for the past nine months, the guerrillas are digging themselves for bigger battles. "The forces may arrive in Mannar tomorrow. The following day we will be in Medawachchiya," boasted Rasiah Ilanthiriyan, the "Military Spokesman" for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), in an interview with the Australian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation.

Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka "The LTTE has 4,000 cadres in the north. They are not its best cadres. If they lose 2,000 cadres, they are finished."

Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka "LTTE has 3,000 cadres remaining. Military plans to kill them within six months. Our daily target is to kill at least 10 LTTE terrorists."

Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka "My term of office is coming to an end this year and I will not leave this war to the succeeding army commander."

Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka "They are an organised force with a lot of experience. They have thousands of fighters. I don't conduct the war looking at deadlines and timeframes. The LTTE has around 5,000 fighters. This time when we take Kilinochchi, we will not leave it after a while. But we must realise that the offensive is going to take time."

Mahinda Rajapakse "We would have cleared them out of the remaining areas long ago but we also had to ensure no civilians were killed. I would say, in a year and a half, we might be able to do it."

Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara" But we have never said that we will finish them off. We have never set deadlines. We are fighting a terrorist organisation, not a conventional war. The more we weaken them, then the more they will come into negotiations. It is not possible to wipe them out."
    -----------------------------------

If the war is almost over, then why is the government buying 4 mig-29? each cost 2 billion sri lanka each! These are interceptor planes! Why do we need such plane now that the war is going to be over? I don't understand the logic behind this! We should be investing this money on our children!

war will make corpses of us all! Warmongers! When will you learn?

I have been thinking along the same lines. If they killed their die hard supporters from TNA, they probably wouldn't think twice about killing the bishop if they can show that SLA has done it, to gain sympathy of the IC. The outcry would be massive from the IC for killing a bishop, and if they can direct it towards the SLA, they will take it without any hesitation. I don't understand why those leading supporters of the LTTE (not the morons here, I mean the active supporters) don't realise the fact that they are only useful to the LTTE as long as they are of some use to them.

  128. It is heartbreaking to see that some people, to insult the enemy, resorting to insult and degrade their own mothers, sisters, wives and daughters and the whole humanity. This is deplorable.

For example, see the use of the phrase, LTTE C---s.

Better race relations or any relation is impossible, to
insult someone if we use our own body parts or our mothers' body parts.

This comment is valid for any ethnic group not just for Sinhalease(us) or others (them),

    Thanks!

Thank you! You, in turn, had better use yours. They are spending more money to end the war more quickly, which if it was dragged on, is going to cost a lot more than that.

    "These are interceptor planes!"

Mig-29 is not only an interceptor. It is a 'multirole fighter', that is it can be used as a fighter, interceptor and ground attack aircraft. They will be used for attacking enemy ground targets as well (probably they will be used mostly in this role) with more accuracy and precision, that is possible with a Mig-29.

  130. Swarnajith Udana,

I agree with your idea, but:

"For example, see the use of the phrase, LTTE C---s.

Better race relations or any relation is impossible,..."

LTTE is not a race.... they are a terrorist group who are fighting for their own crazy objectives, and should not in any way be assosiated with the tamils, whom they claim to represent.

“LTTE is not a race.... they are a terrorist group”

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly, but I would not take that as an excuse to insult my own mother in the pretense of insulting my enemy. If I use our body parts to insult someone,
the first person gets insulted is just myself.

Use a gun against a terrorist if you have to, but I never call them by my mother’s body part because if my enemy is that despicable then what I am saying is my mother is more despicable than them. With that kind of attitude, we only insult ourselves. Thanks!
