Minister Jeyeraj Fernandopulle killed in Weliweriya blast

Senior parliamentarian and government minister Jeyeraj Fernandopulle and 10 others have been killed in a suspected Tamil Tiger suicide blast in Weliweriya today. More than 40 others are reported to be wounded. Almost all casualties are civilians.

Minister Fernandopulle was the chief guest at the national marathon that was to be started from Kanthi stadium in Weliweriya.

Video: A journalist's camera captures the explosion during news coverage of the marathon. Credit to original uploader for uploading the video and Sri Lanka In Focus for the info.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are known to attack civilian and military targets alike, in their campaign to create a separate homeland for Tamils.

  4. We should avenge Jeyaraj's death with all LTTE basterds heads. However, we should not deviate from our current course of action since it will automatically take care of the new goal. God bless the great Sri Lankan Jeyaraj!

How many civilian settlements were boombed as terrorists targets ?

  10. Needless to say what a good lesson this is to all our politicians.By not taking the advice of ministrial seceurity division they not only put themselves but also innocent civilian lives under threat.

What did Jeyaraj achieve by participating in this function.Everybody knew that his life was under threat from LTTE.He once narrowly escaped in the expence of D.M.Dasanayake.Did he take the proper precautions? no.

On the other hand I am really sad about his demise. He is a one minister who was very active in this government.Road development is one area which shows some progress in recent times. On the other hand he was very vocal against the LTTE and their sympathisers.

My feelings are with Dr.Mrs.Fernandopulle,His daughter and the son.

    May he Rest In Peace!

  11. My sincere condolences to those dead in the blast. Also for the Minister Jeyeraj Fernandopulle's family.

Bomber came as a marathon runner:

The LTTE suicide cadre who targeted Minister Fernandopulle had come in the guise of a marathon runner participating at the New Year sports event, Weliweriya police said. Over ten people have reportedly been killed in the blast.

Yes, i am in front of computer and at least trying to make you reasonable because as a former JVP, i only know what is it being terrorist and what is the government's reaction against the terroritsts

todays JVP is preaching different Marxism. But what happened to those who were along with them for the true marxists ideologies ?

i know better mate. My Age and life has made me see the miseries all along.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Don't preach my shadow. Saying the politically correct thing is not going to solve the problem. But the reality, whether you like it or not, is that wars have shaped our evolution/culture. Not only of Tamils and Sinhalese, but of all the people in the world, and even in the animal kingdom.

LTTE is a particularly nasty problem. It is an organization that is terrorizing civilians of a country to achieve a political goal. If you are politically so correct you should see that as well.

    ReplyDelete
  28. My Shadow,

Poor sod, when the first creatures crawled out of the primeval slime, resource partitioning occurred. And it is most obvious in the more advanced animals like ourselves. We don't all do the same thing - like bacteria.

So some contribute to the war in different ways. Some make money and invest in Sri Lanka, some others grow food, manufacture products and contribute to the economy, yet others do research, including military research and contribute that way, there are MI agents that go through information and find patterns to get bloody terrorists, there are journalist who highlight the brutality of the LTTE, so basically you don't need to fight in the front lines to contribute to win against the LTTE. But all of us face pretty much the same risk because of the LTTE. I am sorry that you don't even get this.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My shadow dont know if you saw it but several threads ago we asked a question from you 'whats your solution to the conflict in srilanka?'

  34. defencenet,

did i say about the peace agenda in the previous thread.

Unfortunately there can't be no peace without making LTTE part of the agreement. But we need to do it with International safety net. GOSL and LTTE should enter peace.

We need to recognize the Tamils as a distinct ethnic group. Give them their share of power.

You guys think that will lead to secession. But no, it won't lead to secession because when you have a safety net, secession is not possible

Ranil did that. And he achieve significant success. The country saw some peace. there were checks and balance. when LTTE violated the agreement, there were bans. Same when GOSL violated it.

We need to get into that kind of mode.

You never can defeat LTTE. You can say that we will capture wanni. But what's the point ? They will go into gurreelia mode.

Mao said once, Gurrielas dont need to hold the land. They just need to constantly harass the army. They don't need major force, weapons. But they just need to do some surprise attacks

Iraq is a small country. USA has a mighty army. But what is happening there ? Militants dont need land. they just need to surprise everyone...

I can talk a lot mate..

You keep saying war is a solution. But didn't chandrika had that slogan, did not JR had that slogan ?

    ReplyDelete

    Rover,

I am a JVP, but not the current JVP. There is no place for nationalism in a Leftists theory. Leftists care only for people. Not for the nationalism. Leftists care for people irrespective of their nationalism/religion. I care for my people. so only i am saying Tamils are also my brothers, muslims are also my brothers

JVP abloished all their philosphies. now they are nothing but bullshit. they are not lefists. they are right wing nationlists

i am the true JVP. The grassroot JVP

More than right wing or left wing, i need peace in the country. people have to live peacefully. so only i look at the period when Ranil brought in some peace

i am not saying that i support Ranil fully. I am against his economic policies. but there are something that i accept and agree with Ranil

Age mate, age...age will bring in lot of revelations

    ReplyDelete
  41. "What did MR do different than chandrika ?"

Let me tell you this. I am not a huge fan of MR either. But when someone does something that is good for the country, I support him. I could be wrong, as I am a mere mortal.

LTTE should be shown that it can't achieve political goals by terrorizing civilians. And MR is doing just that. He has mobilized the Sri Lankans, the three forces and most of the IC, including India to show what LTTE is wrong.

It won't be long before LTTE will realize that they can't really win. In the East, that is why they have put, in the Eastern Provicial Elections, a proxy to feel the vibe of the masses.

Govt. is going for decapitation strikes, and also putting on so much pressure that LTTE will implode.

Take a map and see for yourself, how the LTTE has whittled in face of the determined forces.

"Sinhala chap" is as raciest as "Sinhala man" or "Sinhala boy" or "Sinhala customer".

  88. DefenceNet,

Just like LTTE in their daily routines, their supporters in this blog are here to spread cancer in the society. See how they have turned your blog to another LNP. Even when others don't respond, they come in bunches and litter the blog with racist remarks and garbage. They are here to disrupt the sanity of the blog and reduce the reputation to nothing. They are not here to discuss anything useful and that is how they were raised. It is my belief that, just like real cancer, these social cancers need ultra high doses of radiation therapy. Therefore, I believe that you should apply a filter to eliminate all carcinogens from the blog.

However, what's also surprising to me when viewing the video is the sheer apparent lack of tight security around JF (in the video you will see a crowd thronging around him and even some individuals rushing towards where he is standing; appears sheer lunacy to me to allow such lax atmosphere around a GOSL minister who was well known as prime target).

Anyway, now that's the end of him and let's move on...

[ The LTTE is apparently aware of how desperate their situation is, and is trying to arrange a ceasefire, even offering to allow a plebiscite in their territory to decide between autonomy and separatism. But the Sri Lankan government has vowed to crush the LTTE, largely because the war has gone on for two decades and killed over 70,000. No second act for the LTTE, as far as the Sinhalese, and even many Tamils, are concerned. But there are still nearly 10,000 LTTE fighters under arms, and this includes hundreds of elite commandos that have not been seen for a while. Yes, it has gotten so bad the LTTE leaders cannot even arrange suitable funerals for subordinates any more, but the LTTE is still there, and still shooting. The army is better trained and led than it was six years ago, when small numbers of LTTE fighters would push them back. There is still the risk of embarrassing reversals, so the advance into LTTE territory continues at a cautious pace. ]

Ain’t that the best kept secret these days!

I hear the bastards are pleading with the Norwegians to get the GOSL back to the “negotiating table” and given that Norwegians have lost all respect with the GOSL and the people of SL, those skunks in turn are pleading with the UK, US and Canada to get the GOSL to stop the offensive and in turn those countries, instead of directly asking the GOSL to do so, are taking the “human rights” and “civilian casualty” slogans as the excuse to convey to GOSL that the offensive must stop.

To all this, in full credit to the MR GOSL, it has given a polite but a firm “NO” and has canvassed the support of other powerful nations on this planet like China, Russia, etc. who, in agreeing with the GOSL pov that it has the right to liberate territory in SL under armed occupation by an internationally banned terrorist group, have not supported any anti-Sri Lanka resolution in the world theatre.

So, the bottom line: Yes, the LTTE is desperate knows the game is over this time.

  131. Looks like Defencenet has gone home lol.... Defencenet, there's still some more comments here waiting to be deleted.

    Kiri,

I don't think even that would've been necessary. This kind of event is usually planned for several months. Schedules and everything are prepared weeks beforehand. The organizers would want everything to be perfect, especially as a minister is coming. So they would have completed everything as early as possible and publicised the event very well too. Must have been a piece of cake to find a schedule, the security details can be found the day before or even that morning itself, detailed planning wouldn't have been necessary since security for the minister was not that tight. Anyway all this points to the fact that precautionary measurements were not enough (or not taken at all)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Blast looks too powerful to be a suicide bomber disguised as a marathon runner, in shorts and t-shirt.

May be a suicide bomber disguised as police or or a remote controlled explosive devise hidden under pavement soil.

If the planners knew the starting point it could have been an easy thing to do.

As you can see the explosion appears to originate from the pavement.

    ReplyDelete
  133. "May be a suicide bomber disguised as police or or a remote controlled explosive devise hidden under pavement soil."

Don't think so... because his arms and head are the parts that are left, his chest/stomach area must have taken the blast. And such a powerful bomb wouldn't be buried, when it can easily be taken next to your target and detonated.

    ReplyDelete
  134. if you look closely at the video, there are more then 4 suspects that look suspcious, 1 standing on the side as the minster is walking towards left. That guy is looking over minister for smoeone at the opposite end. The other guy is the policeman who is not even acknolwedging the minister as he is comming right towards him as he is looking the opposite direction at someone else. And then, there is the little kid next to the policeman that is looking down the whole time. And the other guy, well try to figure that one out..This was defintly done by a suicide bomber that was very close next to him. Either the suicide bomber moved in closer to hiim as he was walking towards the left because that other guy was eyeing the opposite direction as if he was watching for someone to move along with the minister towards the minister.

    ReplyDelete
  135. This event was very unorganized. That need to get people to stand way farther from ministers. I mean, there were so many people near him, one cannot tell what is going on. There should be distance of at least 5feet around him as well as the marathon runners. Or at lesat give this guy a podium to go up on away from the crowd with the megaphone to yell "reay set go" , by the way the other guy if you coudlnt figure out was the one that kept guiding him EXACTLY where to go by pointing his hand in the direction and getting in front of him so he doesnt go to the right instead.

    ReplyDelete
  136. There should be more videos from different angles. :)

    ReplyDelete
  137. Some of these guys would have been the MF's security personal.

All you need are two "bodyguards".

This guy probably had 4 or 5. Obviously, these guys would ahave known each other, and one would expect them to be trained enough to keep "unknowns" at bay.

Again when wearing a sleeveless t-shirt and shorts it is hard to hide such powerful explosives.

I think the bomber, if indeed this was a suicide bombing, would have been disguised as a policeman.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I dont know man didn't that suicide bomber who tried to attack Douglas have a bomb in her bra, but then again the explosion was minor, but this one was quite big, it must have been a roadside bomb, or or as you said the suicide bomber might be a policeman

    ReplyDelete
  143. If it was a suicide bomber then the best thing would have been to explode ASAP to avoid being caught.

As we can see from the video, the person wearing the bomb could have walked upto the MF at anytime.

Yet the explosion only occurs after he reaches the pavement.

Also, if you look closely enough, the explosion arises from the bottom. This is too large to be a "shoe bomb".

If you look at some of the pics here it is obvious that most of the injuries have been on the lower body parts, eg. legs.

Again this pic shows Fernando's face to be scratch free.

If a suicide bomber had exploded then the direction would have been chest-to-chest.

Could the suicide bomber be the marathon runner wearing No 22 vest? He was praying just before the explosion and then put his hands down and see him pressing something at the hip level or as he was putting both hands down was pulling a chord tied to his thumb. See the frames on the 17,18.19and 20th second on the Sirasa TV breaking news clip. Why should he be praying at that time of this event, unless he was going to die?

You are correct in saying that our politicians are only there to fill their bank accounts and they don’t seem to or interested doing anything positive to elevate the serious problems now facing the country. They are too arrogant with power and I am speaking from my experience with them. My friend left his very busy business to meet the Foreign Minister who recently visited London and the FM was too arrogant to answer or listened to his genuine plea, just bolted out of the building, as if we mean nothing to him. It is good for them to hide behind this war, as simple as that.Fenandopulle must have been punished by the tigers for a good reason. One must be careful these days, whom you trust as friends or partners.Premadasa was killed by the very person he trusted as his vallet.I will reveal more of this some days later as the emotions are running high. He was warned by us in London…..
My friends in the field of this subject thinks there were 2 simultaneous explosions one at a chest level of that athlete and the other at a lower level of the next guy, not at ground level. As it does not show any disturbance to the road or the verge. Could be triggered by a remote.

This is the result of stupidity, ignorance, arrogance and corruption in the land where your terrorists seem to exploit, not for long and you will never get your promised terrorist enclave anywhere in the island.

  165. I always believed Pillaiyan is a double agent, like a Kali type character (the messenger of death). I suspect he was implanted to take out govt operatives. It does not make sense that he is still very much alive, when top notch politicians like Jeyaraj fall like pins in a bowling game.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Nevertheless I am very glad these corrupt politicians are getting one way first class tickets to hell. Through their misguided thoughts, drunk with power, greed, hypocricsy has driven the island to such desperation. With a sri lankan passport nowadays you are held like a criminal at any major airport.

Good thing that the Rajapaksas have American passports.

  168. No doubt the island and its peoples reputation has been soiled beyond repair for a century or two. The International community fully realize that these two tribes of chimps can't live together, therefore put up two separate cages.

The sooner the clean house the better. There is no way out of this but seeing an end to sinhala democracy.

  169. The LTTE terrorists believe it or not are in short supply of ammunition and are in desperation. They fear that if they stop their defensive, SL ARMY will go for the kill.

  171. The international community has and will never opted for a two state solution, but the longer the LTTE can fend off the GOSL the earlier this will become a fact that LTTE is the most ruthless terrorist organization.

The SLA has masterfully outmanuevered the LTTE into the war trap. It acted weak after 2005 to ensure Tamil mindset is confident of military victory. It deceptively caused problems with the closing the slucide gates where it gave hook line and sinker mentality to even the most skeptical dark skinned tamils to think the SLA could be defeated.
They also ensured the most corrupt of the Tamil political (TNA)clans come to presidency. This dynamic duo helped LTTE propel into thinking it can tear up the ceasefire and finish off SLA within months. All that foreign training and new weapon bought from swindling tsunami money, the LTTE. thought it had an advantage. The supposed advantage was a mirage and child soldier boys a striking back left, right and center, but to no luck. The intention is grind down LTTE child soldiers in dribble. The LTTE at this rate is bleeding to death due to political greed and less manpower. Once SLA is satisfied the offensive capability has been successful as it has been, we will see the real fireworks.

The heavy losses of soldiers and equipment, along with loss of senior military and political figures has destroyed all sembelance of confidence.

[How easy it would have been for Pillaiyan to plant a bomb somewhere there.]

    hak..hak..hak…a bloody good one!

Nice try, but a moronic attempt you poor stupid MF! No it didn’t fly…rather it came down like a Scud-B! LMSSAO!!!

So, you think you are today’s Dr. Goebbels eh? You think you are so bloody clever… the maestro of artful false propaganda who can sway the public opinion eh?

    Truly LMSSAO!!!

It is evident even to the most brain dead blogger here that your aim is to turn Sri Lankans’ especially patriotic Sinhelas’ opinion against Pillaiyan and TMVP.

Being the rabid LTTE supporting delightful MF piece of shit that you are, if Pillaiyan is really the untrustworthy (to GOSL) bastard he is, then no, you would rather keep it a secret than publicize it here as it would be in your interest to have Pillaiyan continue to “attack from within!”

ho ho ho…Same goes for your sidekick lump of shit here – upul - who is also trying his best to cast doubts on Pillaiyan’s integrity! ho ho ho…this is too much humor in too short a time!!! LMSSAO!!!

You filthy LTTE supporting MF’s are so bloody pathetic…too simplistically amateurish arseholes really…trying to do heavy lifting in an area - psy-ops - that is beyond your depth!

You are so stupid and simplistic that I wonder if you even copulate with your dog by simple, crass judgmental error such as this!

    Truly LMSSAO!!!

good for you if you are helping at a higher level

but you are talking as if there are ZERO sri lankans abroad who want to do something to help.. dont judge people by where they are living thats not a smart thing to do.. and you are right i dont know a lot.. i dont recall claiming that i did.

"so before you speak and ask about donations, prove to us that ur not sitting behind a computer with a website and checking your paypal acct everyday to see how much donation you have received."

im not part of this org but wish i was.. and as for this proof theory of yours..proving things to others is easy (reference past presidents/corrupt mofos who 'prove' things to people daily on their way to those positions)
.. you might be quite good at it too .. i dont know... but im more interested in proving things to myself.

    peter

you are so wrong in many ways.
if you read properly i have said that i know about the group of people who started it ...if i was the guy who started it i wouldnt waste my time with partial introductions and will just have come in here and said what i wanted to straight up.

so dont display your internet browsing/stalking skills ..ill just stop here without assuming things about you

  182. If Pillaiyan is such a prime enemy of the LTTE then why haven't they taken him out yet or even attempt ed to do smartass ?

Pillaiyan obviously is too precious for what reason ??
This has happened in the past, where tamil paramilitaries have helped secure inside path into govt territory for big fireworks displays. The central bomb attack was done with an EPDP cadre's help. It was EPDP cadre who helped in coordination of douglass attacks. So the paramilitaries in fact benefit the LTTE, as much as the corrupt SLA officers. You don't know how many are on the bank role of Pottu Amman.

  183. JF didn't want Pillaiyan to taken on a to high ranking with MR brothers. Instead he wanted his underworld gang from chilaw to do his bidding. That was not to be. It is likely this was a contract killing. Sinhala underworld gang laid the claymore but was paid by the boys. Pillaiyan group might have given key intelligence, cuz they can rove freely through colombo outskirts and its checkpoints

    ReplyDelete
  184. In military strategic terms for the LTTE, JF hardly matters in this war. It is more physcological. Now that they have shown they can get him. No one is safe.....

[What Fonseka has boasted has been badly disproven.]

Really? Not when I last checked.

Dr. Fonseka (lol) said “minimum 10 a day before or after meals” and that’s what the regimen has been...actually the running daily average for the last two months is 19 I hear (admittedly, it dropped a couple of weeks ago from 22 to 19).

BTW, you are yapping and jumping here like a monkey who just ingested opium and is running around with his monkey-phallus dangling…I would kindly urge you to get your maggot infested dick back in your pants before one of us Motherlanka patriots decides to Jinsu it and feed it to stray dogs.

Take Note: This is not your Tamilnut or Nitharsam or whatever the fcuk the name might be…this is a site for like minded SL patriots who are competing with each other on “how to kill the maximum LTTE maggots within the shortest time” so you are really out of your league here.

[LTTE has invested in 30 different ways bumping off your leaders.]

Naw arsehole, we don’t need 30 different ways (like sex-positions), we just need two:

    - PrettyKfirs / FoxyMiGs
    - DPU/LRRPs

And they are both working very well, thank you!

[Pillaiyan being a Tamil is smart]

True he is smart. He helped SLDF liquidate nearly 2500 LTTE bastards/bitches in the East.

    Here is just a sample:

Seriously maggie, yes, there is something in Mannar...

400 LTTE bastards/bitches are now on the verge of getting trapped in Madu as it is likely soon the exit points to Vanni will be cutoff.

    Imagine the delightful scenario...

    Imagine the juicy headlines...

    "Carnage at Pilgrimage"...!!!
