LTTE aircraft intercepted over Mullaithiv

LTTE launched artillery an air attacks on security forces HQ and adjoining airbase in Vavuniya early morning today (09th) at around 3.15AM. LTTE artillery began hitting the the area surrounding the base just before two incoming aircrafts were detected on SLAF radar. 10 soldiers have been killed and 18 more have been wounded in the incident. 3 policemen and 5 civilians have also been wounded. Injuries and deaths are said to be caused by exploding artillery shells. The Indian donated Indra2 radar which detected LTTE craft also sustained minor damages from one of the shells or bombs that fell near it.

More than 25 artillery shells and more than 40 mortars fell in and around base premises and the artillery duel continued for nearly two hours after the air attack. SLA have been countering LTTE artillery fire with Multi Barreled Rocket Launchers and other long range artillery guns stationed in multiple locations in Vavuniya. Special Forces (SF) units of the Sri Lanka Army have now been deployed in the are to hunt down any remaining tigers who managed to infiltrate the FDL last night.

The LTTE had coordinated the attack so their aircraft would commence bombing just after the artillery strike diverted the attention of the base personnel. Several LTTE cadres including artillery spotters and suicide cadres had managed to infiltrate the FDL and sneak close to the base. Ground troops, amidst heavy artillery fire, have successfully engaged these cadres and around 10 LTTE bodies could be observed scattered near the base premises. SLA sources suggest that the LTTE death figure could be well above 20.

Two F-7G interceptors of the 5th Jet Squadron were airborne from Katunayake Air Base immediately after the LTTE planes were detected on radar. According to SLAF pilots , they have managed to shoot down an LTTE aircraft over Mullaithiv while it was returning from the aforementioned raid. The plane, after being shot down, had crashed into LTTE held territory in Mullaithiv district to an area some 20km away from Mullaithiv town.

  9. Hate to be a buzz kill... but it is a fact that Fighter Pilots often tend to exaggerate claims of kills. Even the greatest ace of them all, Eric Hartman was known to have exaggerate at least few kills.

Unless we are told just how the F-7s managed to shoot down this plane, i find it hard to accept. With Missiles, there is a chance. With guns, its a remote chance.

However if i am wrong, and our fighter jocks did shoot down 1 plane, Congratulations to them. On winning the 1st Arial Victory by a Sri Lankan born pilot since the 2nd World War. And the 1st of the Jet era.

  10. "Was it through cannon fire from the F-7s or air to air missiles?"

According to pilots they fired both the cannons and the missiles.

We don't know what hit them and will post when we get info (the tigers wouldn't know either, that's for sure).

  16. Sri Lanka Military Says Jets Shot Down Rebel Plane ??

Sri Lankan fighter jets shot down a small plane used by the Tamil Tigers' air wing Tuesday during a rebel attack on a northern military base, the military said. Though the rebel aircraft have rarely caused major damage, their repeated attacks -- and the military's inability to stop them -- have been a source of deep frustration and embarrassment for government forces. The fighting began early Tuesday when the rebels launched an artillery barrage at the military base in the northern town of Vavuniya for more than one hour, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said. The attack caused damages and injuries, but the extent of the destruction was not immediately known. Amid the attack, two rebel aircraft flew over the base and dropped bombs on the airfield, he said. The air force sent MiG interceptors into the skies to chase them back over rebel-held territory and shot one plane down over the rebel stronghold of Mullaitivu, Nanayakkara said. "The pilot confirmed they destroyed one," he said. Reporters from Vavuniya speculated that the reports of Tiger Plane shot down was a story build up by defense official to boost the moral of the SLA and to escape the continuing embarrassment.

the F-7 have only one 30mm cannon.. with a not many rounds in the feed system, so may be it was the missile.. Though I would be over thrilled to find out it was the cannons..it would have been hard to place the pipper on the target unless the F-7 was within less than 400~800m. so to shoot one down with cannon at night is a real feat!!

And yes, it would have been lights out for the tiger air crew/pilot before he knew what hit him. Because a 30mm HEDP would have shredded his canopy in flash or even the missile would have a 2~4kg blast fragment warhead which would have ripped the Zlins anodized aluminum fuselage easily.

  22. It is now reliably learnt that the Zlin 143s that attacked the SLAF base at Vavuniya had targeted the Indra II Radar system at the airbase, which had successfully detected them on three separate occasions to date.

Reports indicated that the radar system was slightly damaged after a bomb fell close to it. Two Indian nationals operating the radar system were injured in the blast.

Late last night a team of Tigers who had infiltrated Vavuniya government held area to the south of the SLAF and Army base at Vavuniya from jungles in the Irattaperiyakulam area were engaged by the Army. The SLAF base and the Vavuniya SF HQ lay side by side and is divided only by a fence.

9 dead bodies of Tigers have been recovered so far. The team had given arti-correction coordinates for LTTE 120mm canons before being detected and attacked.

Two Zlin 143 planes that came to attack the Vavuniya Air Force Headquarters, having managed to avoid anti-aircraft guns unloaded its cargo of gravity bombs mostly outside the base around 3.45am today. A 2D Radar system in Vavuniya picked up their approach and had conveyed it to SLAF fighter jets by this time.

F-7 Fighters and others on standby scrambled into the morning sky immediately. The SLAF aircraft managed to track down one of the Zlins over Mulaitivu District, and engaged it with gun fire and missiles. The aircraft caught fire and went down in a ball of fire into an area ahead of the SLDF 59 Division FDL.

The Army knows this location and Air Force sources indicated there could be some actual footage of the crash. It was too early to verify these claims.

The Tigers had thought they had set the stage for a surprise aerial attack but had given it away in a sudden unexpected 120mm attack on the Vavuniya FDL last night. 6 soldiers were killed and another 6 were inured in the attack.

    one thing though...
what if the radar system was damaged beyond repair???
what if the tiger attack succeeded???
we really have to bring the game up now cos i'm sure tigers will give their best since it simply doesn't have an alternative.
The worrying factor is that we can't seem to give adequate protection for our high profile assets enough. The AA fire alone wasn't enough to deter the Zlins..
what's the possibility of having at least MANPADS close to these high profile assets. Since zlins do tend to operate at lower altitudes, is there a way to light up the sky really fast so the AA gunners can spot the intruder faster???
If the F7g's didn't shoot down a Zlin we won't have anything celebrate about.

  27. Despite the artillery attack, ground based AA guns continued firing at LTTE aircraft. However LTTE craft escaped harmless grom ground based AA fire yet again, a facts that should be taken seriously as we cannot always afford to wait for F-7s to do the job 'after' LTTE raided the target.

Latest military reports received from Vavuniya reveal that a major attack launched by LTTE terrorists at the security forces headquarters Wanni and Air Force Base Vavuniya early this morning (Sept 9) was completely foiled.

According to the reports, the terrorists launched a pre-dawn ground assault coordinated with artillery fire and an air raid with the intention of causing severe damage to the Air Force assets in the Vavuniya air base.

Defence sources in Vavuniya state, the terrorists launched artillery fire to the Army camp in order to prevent counter attack and directed their ground assault at the airbase. However, valiant soldiers moved forward amid heavy enemy artillery fire and crushed the terror ground assault completely. According to the available information 10 bodies of slain LTTE cadres have been found so far.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Air Force fighter jets intercepted two LTTE light aircraft fleeing after failed mission at Vavuniya Air force base and shot down one of the aircraft in the Mullaittivu skies.

10 soldiers laid down their lives and 15 others suffered injuries. One police constable was killed and 8 others sustained injuries due to the enemy artillery fire. Five Air Force personnel also suffered injuries.

    More information will follow..

  33. Thanks for the updates as always, DN.

This is great news. I am glad we are swatting these annoying mosquitoes.

But a few points of concern:

How did a relatively large group of Tiger spotters and suicide bombers manage to infiltrate Vavuniya and avoid detection to get so close to carrying out a Katunayake Airport-style attack?

Thankfully most of them were exterminated before they could cause any significant damage.

But if i recall correctly Vavuniya is a heavily fortified Army garrison town with a heavy para/military intelligence presence.

The other thing is, like Moshe asked, where are they firing artillery from and if Vavuniya is still within range how come they have not pounded are positions more often? Or has this been happening on a regular basis in the past but without any major harm to our side?

All in all, a close shave with a sweet ending.

    ReplyDelete
  34. //However LTTE craft escaped harmless grom ground based AA fire yet again, a facts that should be taken seriously as we cannot always afford to wait for F-7s to do the job 'after' LTTE raided the target.//

    Exactly.

IF radar system is in trouble we need to expect another tincan show. I hope SLDF is working on every thing from right now. If any fool said Akkarayankulam was a turning point it is reversed now. SLA/SLAF now need to capitalize on this both military and propaganda wise.

  49. What we need are the Russian made ZSU-23 "Shilka" self propelled anti-aircraft guns. And place then around Strategic Targets.

The Shilka being radar guided will tear those LTTE planes to shreds. And they are mobile to boot.

The shilka has showed its worth in several wars against both jets and other types of aircraft in several wars.

Would be the best asnwer to our long term anti-aircraft needs. Another good weapon against those LTTE places would be having a few turbo prop fighters of our own armed with machine guns and cannon.

  63. "LTTE aircraft intercepted over Mullaithiv" - should hint at what is going to be revealed...

    Some points to ponder:

    1. Hurray for the SLA if they believe they have brought down the Tiger aircraft.
    - Firstly this can be expected everytime the TAF took to the air. However, "given" the technological capaiblity after much begging, Sinhala SLA is pathetic at skill, intelligence and execution. Something to be ashamed really…no…really…think about it…. given all the fancy toys around the world cannot compete against the Re-Hand-Built aircraft and Tamil Tiger Engineering.

Bicycle vs. a Car where the Car is expected to win the race, but loses to the person riding the bicycle continuosuly until one day the car driver manages to win, barely. And the Car team celebrates with champagne and food while orgasming at the thought they have won the race while instant replay is being watched to see who actually won the race.

However, stay tuned to the news/contacts to find out more about the "downing" of the TAF aircraft.

    2. Radar operated by Indians
-Not by Sinhalas SLA who are technologically and mentally challenged due to the racist cancer throbbing through them.
    - Another humiliating shame. Better replace those radars and the Indian couples.

-Dude, you are reading from the Tamil sites, but the truth is there are even more severe damages to the SLA base and a highly valuable prized item they had kept there besides the Radars… It will come out in time, let them find out and panic. Also, the deaths are a lot higher in the base than they are letting out. One of the Indians are critically wounded. It also seems the BlackTigers engaged the SLA instead of staying un-detected(something was complete) – there is reason for this. However, when one bullet hit one Sinhala Dumb F**K SLA in the head, they finally detect the Tigers are there with their extreme intelligence!

“great work..SLAF must investigate why AA guns are not managing to shoot them down…”

    - It’s not the guns that are defective. LOL. ; )

Anyways, even in the dreamland of theirs it is sadly

1 TAF aircraft down (in seven missions giving SLA mark of 1/7 lol) VS XX highly prized and expensive new technology loaded Jets/Gunships/Spy Planes destroyed…

Let the monkeys climax eachother befor they find out the credibility of the TAF craft downing.

LTTE first launched an artillery barrage targeting defense area in Vavuniya around 3.15 AM. Over 30 artillery shells fell into the Sri Lanka Air Force camp, 211 Brigade Headquarters and Police Complex alongside Vavuniya - Kandy road. The radar center of the Army camp was damaged due to the attack.

Around 3.40, two LTTE airplanes dropped two bombs in the camp area amidst artillery barrage. When the airplanes entered into the camp area, security forces emanated a massive firing towards them. With that the LTTE airplanes dropped the bombs, changed the directions and fled towards Vanni.

SLA speculated claims of intercepting TAF aircraft = 1?

    SLA Technology > LTTE Technology
    SLA money > LTTE money

However, the balance still tilts in LTTE favour for the simple reason:

  88. The end of the LTTE airforce? DW has suggested that the LTTE use foreign mercenaries as pilots. If so, they may well refuse to fly now. As long as the risk was very low and the pay high they would do it. Now the situation has changed.

Interestingly a LTTE plane was almost hit during the Trincomalee raid. This raid against the Indra radar may have been a response to this near hit. After this LTTE fiasco the morale of the pilots must be very low.

The air arm that Velupillai is so fond of showing off at every opportunity got what it is long overdue - a kiss from an air2air missile.

The two pilots who used to grin with Velupillai may have bitten dust in the wee hours of Tuesday.

These plane never posed a strategic threat: it was just a pain in the a*** that was hell bent on causing maximum embarassment to the defence establisment rather than any significant phyical damage.

Six previous raids made sure it got the intended headlines in both local and international media. Tamil Diaspora was ectasic on hearing these brave acts. It became the biggest show-piece of the LTTE.

With one gone, the the myth of so-called pilot invincibility is shattered. The news will make the rest of the pilots more cautious before embarkin on these stupid missions. As the army moving at a steady pace towards Killinochchi, the places where these planes take off may not be available to them any more. Before that, the Tigers have to do something no matter how hollow it is.

The rise and fall of the aircraft symbolizes what lies ahead for Tigers; every attempt to raise the morale will experience undignified falls - the one experienced by legendary Humpty Dumbpty.

there is thick virgin jungle connecting the puliyankulam/nedunkerni area to outskirts of vavuniya town, this is the most likely route of the infiltrators.

and goes on to sayAs the army moving at a steady pace towards Killinochchi, the places where these planes take off may not be available to them any more. Before that, the Tigers have to do something no matter how hollow it is...

so in reality there is too much emphasis on these pain in the a*** because they will soon have no airstrip or paved road left to fly these. the ZLINS will soon be catapulted out of the hiding places by the SLA.

the only other possibility is the ltee may try to use them on a suicide mission rather than let the SLA capture them, that is if the ltte's capable of flying them will do so. If these tincans are flown by mercenaries, the ltte may very well destroy them

  112. My sources in the Sri Lankan Army and AirForce have both confirmed that the damage is more severe that we are lead to believe.

The Radar suffered moderate damage and may be out of action for at least a few weeks. Which leaves the skies open for the LTTE aircraft.

The base also took several arti rounds causing some damage to infrastructure and resulting in the deaths of at least 12 soldiers. With at least 2 dozzen more with moderate to seious injuries.

AirForce source confirmed that no LTTE aircraft was shot down. The pilots did make contact with 1 LTTE aircraft for a brief moment but could not fly low enough to successfully engage it with cannon and missle fire.

My souces are both high placed and reliable. Looks like we came off worse that we are lead to believe. Its about high time our Military planners took a fresh look into the problem of the LTTE airforce and come up with a realistic plan to combat them.

MiG-29s is not at all a realistic solution. And it is obvious the ground based AA weapons we not currently have are ineffective. The time for action is now.

  134. Shan... 'who says jets need to fly low to fire missiles at a target, aw c'mon mate these birds have more sophisticated fire power.'

FYI... the IR signature of small turbo prop aircraft is far less than that of jet aircraft... ask any aeronotical engineer that.

Flying close to the ground is one of 2 tactics to avoir IR Seeker missiles. The ground emits a lot of heat that can confuse any IR missile.

If they were F-7Bs, they don't have the fire-control radars that are required for accurate gunnery. However the new F-7G does have a good fire-control radar.

And looking at the approach speeds, a pilot will have no more than 2 seconds to line up, set up a defelction angle if required, then fire off a burst. Which is pretty hard to do even for the best polits given the time limitation.

Bottom line... the maximum flying speed of the Zlin Z-143 is far less than the stall speed of an F-7. So there is no way a F-7 can stay with a Zlin for too long.

The F-7 is limited to carrying 4 heat seaking Air to Air missiles. They are not equipped to fire Radar Guided Missiles. Chinese missiles are not as effective as the AIM-9 Sidewinder or R550 'Magic' missile.

Like i said my information is from reliable sources. People i grew up with and who i trust. Thats why i cant give names or ranks.

As much as i dislike the LTTE and wish them all dead, we have to be ojective and realistic. No vitcory is won without sacrifice. And one has to face defeat every once in a while. Learning from past mistakes and making up for shortcommings is the way to move to the future.

Mi-35s... yeah get more of those birds. MiG-29s i still have my doubts. Keeping the MiGs is gonna cost us dearly.

Mission on Vanni SF HQ successful, Tiger aircrafts safe - LTTE
    [TamilNet, Tuesday, 09 September 2008, 13:24 GMT]
Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) has claimed that their Black Tigers destroyed the Radar installation inside Sri Lankan military's Vanni headquarters at 3:05 a.m. on 09 September, Tuesday. Thereafter, Tamileelam Air Force (TAF) aircrafts and Col. Kittu Artillery formation targeted the Sri Lankan Vanni HQ with the coordination of the Black Tigers, successfully carrying out the operation, the Tigers said, adding that the LTTE aircrafts safely returned to their bases after completing their mission. The communication facility with its tower, engineering facility, anti-aircraft weapon and the ammunition store at the Sri Lankan base were completely destroyed, the LTTE said.

  139. What's disappointing is that teh LTTE has already shot down scores of SLAF aircraft including high speed jets as well, with less sophisticated systems. The SL Forces possess much greater capabilities when compared, and are unable to shoot down a couple of crop dusters.

The issue here is not about weapons. It is definitely about training and deployment of assets to deal with each threat.

It is true that the LTTE had the advantage of being able to watch and identify each flight before determining how to strike. And yet, the SL Forces who possess similar or even superior intelligence gathering capabilities are still falling by the way side.

I am reluctant to accept the zlin shoot down story without some concrete proof. If it was a missile strike, at least we'd have some assurance that once fired, there would be little or no escape for a prop-kite.

The SL forces have a lot of opportunity for improvement in this area.

Speeches about what little harm the tiger tincan airforce did each time doesn't cut it. Neither is it ok to be talking abt their inaccuracy or the non-exploding bombs. The SL forces need to have counter-measures that work and people who know how to make them work. This is an issue of training and management capability and people must be held accountable for the failures so far.

  140. There are at least 3 Mi-35s on the way. There's a rumor that the SLAF is also looking for a few more Mig27s, since our guys are very familiar with these machines and they perform really well in our environment.
By the way, the Mig27 was a non-entity [though designed to be the match for the US F-111 Aadvark] for a long time. It never had any significant achievement in all of its life, until our guys put it to use.

  141. This is my first post to defencenet.blogspot.com. I am a Sinhala research engineer living in the US who has worked for many years in defence & weapons R&D.

Supersonic fighter jets are a costly overkill for defending against ultralight aircraft. They too fast, consume too much fuel, cannot fly low enough. For defending against ultralights we should deploy some long range propeller-driven WWII fighers (such as the P-51 Mustang) fitted with cannons, air-to-air and air-to-ground rockets. These planes are much cheaper and can be deployed in large numbers to maintain a 24 x 7 air defence umbrella over the Vanni and offshore along the coastline.
