Two LTTE boats destroyed - Pooneryn

Naval Commandos of the Special Boat Squadron destroyed two medium sized LTTE craft near the seas off Pooneryn around 11PM last night. SBS units mounted the attack once they detected the LTTE boats bound to Kalmunai point from Pooneryn coastline. It is believed that all 8 cadres on board were killed in the incident but there is no confirmation yet on this claim. SBS units suffered no casualties.

Meanwhile sporadic fighting was going on in Wanni front near Akkarayankulam and Kokavil areas. In Kolinochchi, tigers have moved most of their offices elsewhere. Confirming previous intel reports, majority of the civilians in Kilinochchi have also been forcibly moved to Puthukuduiruippu and VIshwamadu areas. Gains in Kokavil are significant as the area has been under LTTE control for more than 15 years. Kokavil once housed a small SLA base which the tigers overran in 1990. It is in this battle Capt. Saliya Aladeniya died a heroic death fighting for hours while being outnumbered, outgunned and without reinforcements.

Meanwhile SLAF jets struck a LTTE position north of Vennerikulam yesterday evening at 4PM. SLAF have intensified their Air attacks as intelligence information is now more readily available as a result of army advances deep inside LTTE territory. In other news, Tiger sympathizers across the world have been greatly worried about SLAF’s new weapon; the FAB or the Fuel Air Bomb. SLAF used FABs to engage LTTE targets in Wanni last week, causing panic among tigers and their supports around the globe. Although FAB will not be ideal for Decapitation strikes (due to LTTE safe houses usually built deep underground), it could be used to destroy elite LTTE formations which form the back bone of LTTE’s military machine.

    1. it doesn't leave behind unexploded cluster mines

True but used in conjunction with bunker busters, FABs can be very useful. First open up the bunker head using the BB and then drop the FAB.

  11. DN,
What if our SLDF combines Bunker Busters and FAEs. I read nightfox' article about FAE's. It looks quite impressive. If two jets can co-ordinate on target, first one doing the clear up and the second one doing the devastation job. Specially the oxygen sucking vacuum creating effect would be just lovely.

  15. Guys, I have a question...

Is the main gun on the arrow boats a 20mm or a 14.5mm gun? wikipedia says 20mm, but I am not sure of wikipedia as a source.

I know that a handful are fitted with 23mm guns, but what do the vast majority of them carry for a main gun?

    ReplyDelete
  16. guys,

i think there is a difference between thermobaric bombs and fuel-air bombs.

RPO-Shmel is a classic thermobaric weapon. BLU series air dropped bombs are fuel-air bombs. of course there are air dropped thermobaric weapons (MOAB, FOAB).

    Thanks for the update.

Is there any chance, of tigers trying out something like FAB (locally manufactured) ?

By looking at the video I thought it might be possible to locally manufacture something that might cause at least a massive fire.

  18. Moshe

I wish our military will try to buy some FOABs from the Russians. Hopefully they made it available for export.

We just need a proper platform to deliver it. We could modify our existing C-130 to carry one.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Moshe

the explanation to your poser try this link Thermobaric explosives

Thermo is heat and baric means pressure.

Fuel Air bomb is a mixture of fuel and air - this needs plenty of air so will not work properly in places like a tunnel.

DN and Nemesis(with due respect) please pardon me for the explanation with the very little knowledge of these two.

Nemesis - would you mind if we ask for a bit more detailed and technical explanation.

It's doubtful if that would ever happen. Out of the two C-130s we have, one has been grounded for a long time. The other is sometimes being repaired using parts of the grounded plane. So...

Why the army was not able to send reinforcement on time? Why they were to sent all the way from Nuwara Eliya ? What actually happened at Kokavil decade ago?

How should SL plan to protect these isolated camps in future? Though the Humanitarian mission objective now is to destroy the LTTE, sooner or later SLA has to defend it too. History should not be repeated.

yep; TF the oxygen deprivation issue (although it takes place in both types) is most effective in the thermobaric type which doesn't need an open space to explode.

    GE,
IF FOAB is for sale, that will be a SUPER WEAPON with around 4(??) KT of TNT equal!!! IDEAL for deep and fortified bunkers EVEN with multiple exits.

[Although FAB will not be ideal for Decapitation strikes (due to LTTE safe houses usually built deep underground),"]

So, the FABs will not work too well in the deep tunnels, but hey not everybody can hide in a deep tunnel/bunker and keep our armed to the teeth invading Bravehearts at bay!

If you hide in tunnels during an offensive (i.e. to escape a FAB attack (which will come unpredictably as SLAF does not drop leaflets given prior notice…LMSSAO!)), then you need to be prepared to live in the tunnel forever as the opposing force will capture your territory and be all over your tunnel entrances (likely defecating and urinating into them too!)…LMSSAO!

No, seriously how it works is the leaders/honchos take to the deep tunnels, but the minion fighting LTTE cadres will stay in the usual trenches/behind cover of trees, demolished buildings, etc, when the attacking SLDF forces are coming…this way FABs from SLAF will pulverize those MF’s for good, enabling the bravehearts to capture and dominate the area.

After that, there are much less cost-effective methods to liquidate the “tunnel cowards,” the most appropriate methods being the pumping of poisonous/toxic gas into the tunnels or simply, flooding them with zillion gallons of water (pumped from nearby lakes/rivers and Vanni SL has an abundance of them)!

In any case, once you liquidate the minion fighting cadres, the game is over! No fighting army/entity ever won a war by the leaders hiding in deep tunnels and having the “pawns” fight it out in the open and getting pulverized!

    Common sense…in my view.

There are some crazy reports on lankaEnews, regarding the SC first ordering the removal of all road blocks from Galle Face and then now trying to take punitive action against Rupavahini and ITN for critiquing the SCJ order.

This type of persecution will lead to the other branches of the govt, the president and parliament having to take a stance against the SC. Such an outcome could be detrimental to the SC since in SL politics will win.

Only bad things can come from such a situation where the judiciary gets put down and gets subordinated to politics.

As such...I would not pay much attention to this issue other than to say:

This is actually good for the SL's image...shows the independence of the judiciary from the legislature/government.

To flood tunnels you need millions of gallons of water.

If you simply pour in a tanker load of kerosene and ignite it underground, it burns off all breathable air within a few seconds.

Once the kerosene is pumped in, it vaporizes and the heavy vapor lies low on the ground. Ignition can be made leisurely, at a time of choice, while those who are potentially using stored oxygen to outlast such an attack live on borrowed time.

I've also heard of the Nazis using Sulfer-dioxyde, a heavy yellowish vapor that can be created easily by burning sulfer which also hugs the ground and will seep into the bottom of any ravine and accumulate, to flush/kill those who hid in tunnels.

Thus unlike in a 'true' democracy SL has just two pillers execetive and SC. SC will colapse at the point when SL military refused to follow its orders. i recon the SC is doing a GOOD job as long (as they stay within the law, of course).

IF there is a need to erect barricades along the galle road (i think YES), then the govt should,
    1. invoke relevant laws and make their case, or,
    2. if there aren't laws or those laws are secondary to others that stop it, change the laws
    3. some laws cannot be changed without 2/3. change the defence tactics.

i'm personally happy that SC is upholding the law EVEN in a RIDICULOUSLY straightforward way. IF implementing the law to the letter is WRONG, the letter of the law need to be changed, not the SC decision.

politicians confronting the SC is totally unacceptable.

there is NO reason why courts should do "it's share" in the war on terror; IT MUST NOT.

as someone said our constitution is pre-war and even the PTA is pre-war. if SLDFs need more teeth legally, the stupid parliament must give it via laws. if it doesn't/can't, then change whatever that can be changed.

don't think there's a fixed rule on this... some maynot have a main gun but will carry multiple LMG's, HMG's etc
most crafts however seems to carry a grenade launcher.

    On FAE's
I think it's wrong to say that they can't be used for tunnels and bunkers etc since there's not a lot of air for it to work etc.
USAF got an FAE that uses a metal dust cocktail that burns slower and longer so it works really well in confined spaces.
    And like Rover said...
there are FAE's developed that can penetrate hardened shelters before setting off the thermobaric explosion... Can't remember the name of that bomb but if my memory serves me correct it had a depleted uranium tip for better penetration on impact and then a timed detonator sets off the first explosion to spread the "fuel mixture" and the secondary timed explosion to set off the fuel...
USAF claims that they can programme the thermo to go off at a preset depth...
say if VP is 30ft under...this bomb will penetrate 30ft before setting itself off :)

my take on this MD is that GOSL's fastest solution to any security threat is closing the bloody roads without thinking about the negative side effects it has on civilians..
I assume you're station outside of SL, and as a person who has to earn his money by working and having to battle present conditions of SL... these road closures are just absurd...
Galle road closure from hilton to gallface hotel is just crazy. the only important building i can think of is the presidential secretariat. don't we have any other way to guard these places without having to close roads???
Almost daily thousands fight through heavy traffic due to this road being closed...
other toads too are intermittently closed when VVIP's travel on those roads...
some security measures are understandable but passing down each and every bill to people is just not right. Especially when you see how much the people are paying already for the country and the war.

  50. I don't think it's best to discuss of the specs of the FAE's which are being used by the SLAF. I don’t know if we were offered any NATO type FAE's by States or maybe Greece. And what type is in use. But sometime back the Chinese were offering them to us. So did some Russians.

Basically what the Chinese offered (I don’t know if we got them) was about 300kg a unit, which had parachute retarded bomblets which created a "effected" (not kill zone) foot print of around 2500m2 and has a 0.15Mps pressure close to the POD and reduces as the radius expands.

The Chinese had proven these units from Q-5 & JH-7’s, I’m sure our MIG-27’s can carry them and launch at similar speeds & altitudes.

We also need thermobaric air launched guided ordnance in the coming days. And one’s with big warheads/fillings as well as more accurate (guided day & night) man portable systems.

    That’s all.. cheers

your only hope now is ' chief joker' Sarath nanda De silva...lete see how the old yet humiliated hue Hefner of our judiciary can save big cat...we hear that the man has come to terms with ranil W for the prime miniter post under a Future UNF govt...:))...

Q SF, Sarath Silva is just doing his job!

A: Repa the man is not doing his job ill tell you...he contacted the president a few months ago with a request.this was to extend all the support to the president on the condition that the premiership would be given to him upon his retirement and a host of other benefits in exchange for favors to him.

president tactfully avoided the topic.then he was in talk with some monks to champion his cause.you would be knowing the sort of his contacts with some monks in sri lanka.youll recall when he was caught with a woman down diyawanna oya 'in the act' you would know how he went behind those monks to paint the incident as being an incident done by the conspirators from other religions to tarnish the good image of the devout Buddhist.no one has exploited Buddhism to cover up all ills and misdeeds as this man.then when mahinda came to power among the above mentioned request the man made many other which the president avoided.it was then that this man contacted ranil W came to an understanding and got some lawyers and a few others to get petitions before him at his instigation to launch the witch hunt against the govt to paralyze the administration.

anyway let the man be cautioned that he is playing with the wrong man...:))...the village rules will apply anywayz...:))

now the plan is to have PB jayasundera behind bars for a cabinet decision made by ranil W's UNF govt...

the question is how on earth can PB be responsible for implementing a cabinet decision which was presented by milinda and approved by ranils team at the cabinet of ministers...?

if PB is punished then how on earth would ranil and milinda escape the blame and the cabinet of minsters by extension...?

the other deal of the sale of the sri lankan insurance corporation as you would know which was made by the UNF govt was also one of the most corrupt.harry J had a black door deal worked out with our 'golden Buddhist' with a large sum exchanging hands for that to not be taken up before the bench.this is how the man does his job.

without PB its a well known fact that there is no one else suitable or knowledgeable to manipulate the complex lankan economy to balance the political demands and the countries economic welfare.which is why the man is considered the best finance secretary sri lanka ever had.by sending PB behind bars sarath wishes to see the main economic human resources negated from the powerful and competent presidential team.the next victim as per the grand plan is none other than defence secretary Gothabhya Rajapakse.one by one the man intends to remove competent people from the team and to cripple the administration before the elections.

it was this reason why the president instructed the SLFP to get ready for elections early next year.

in a nother aspect of concern and cutting a long story short, the UNP cross over group is at the mercy of the judiciary...if the the 'man does his job' and declares from the bench that the cross over was illegal in the context of people's sovereignty, then that becomes the law of the land.so the GOVT will loose the majority in the house.crippling the administration and paving the way for elections in a turbulent set up with things in his grand agenda's favor...

anyways let us however in good faith, caution the man...'nayata gahala polla waradda ganna one nahane' kiyala sinhala kiyamanak thiyenawane...look what happned to VP...:))...

    Agree.

//there is NO reason why courts should do "it's share" in the war on terror; IT MUST NOT.//

This is BS. We have this mentiality of some thing being "pure". You don't need lows or following of lows that challange the existance of your socity. We need to use any thing and every thing against LTTE terrorism. (Well, LTTE do it.) LTTE terrorism originated and secceed in the current system and the same system fails defeating it any where in the world. We need to modify the system and the whatever new system which defeat terroris will become the norm of tomorrow.

Current low was originaly created by Dutch and developed and established by British in order to protect "their" socaity. They replaced our (sinhala/ udarata) low which was our own low. We love british low, worship it and hate any of our own things thanks to the talant of british. It is Rohana Wijeweera who showed he fought against Queen and even 72 constitution has no much fundemental difference when it comes to philosopy behind current low. You like it or not our heritage is based on buddism and I don't think a low created by us will demand a bukku to stand in front of judge.

//as someone said our constitution is pre-war and even the PTA is pre-war. if SLDFs need more teeth legally, the stupid parliament must give it via laws. if it doesn't/can't, then change whatever that can be changed.//

Thanks to JR's low this will not happen.

IF SC is going to be cheif joker's "sellam kade" SL is walking to a military rule, my guess.

  56. Adding more;

    1. We are following a version of low which ruled Monarawila Kappetipola and Puran Appu were traitors. It is matter of interptretion of the same low to rule Sarath Fonseka or Gotabhaya Rajapakse also violated the low or traitors or some thing.

    2. SLFPers were happy when SB was sent to jail. I just couldn't undertand how just speaing of few words make some one stay in jail for months. I think even in "raja kale" people enjoyed more "freedom of expression".

    3. If CJ is doing some thing wrong who will judge that? Is he above the low. In our (budhdhist) culture things handled as a whole. This supremecy shown by CJ was originated from the concept of GOD who has all the ppowers and above to all. The low we have is fundementaly wrong. We just follow it becuz no one wants to get punished after seeing what happened to Kappetipola and Puran Appu. Things need to be changed.

‘Thus unlike in a 'true' democracy SL has just two pillars executive and SC. SC will collapse at the point when SL military refused to follow its orders. This kind of 'kakille' rulings will lead the country only towards military rule.’

I am glad that the SC has the powers to intervene to safeguard the rights of the citizen. Military rule? Are we expecting our island to go the way Burma has gone. If that is so then we will all join the tigers to throw them out. We know how much the gentle people of Burma is suffering. They to had the corrupt politicians and monks in pursuit of the politicians and politicians in return were in pursuit of the monks and the judiciary was sidelined and while these two lot ruined that country(rata kawa)thus weakening the infrastructure resulting in equally corrupt military leaders stepped in and everything is history. So don’t let that happen here. I was in and out of the Burmese monastery in Kandy where I lived close by and the events are similar prior to the junta taking over. This the very reason why I am opposed to politicians getting involved in a religion, while running the state.
Having barricades is wrong and harming the day to day lives of the people who are making a living. I and my business are suffering immensely and people in power must be sensitive to the concerns of the citizens and Supreme court is the only hope. Unless one have a stake in the country one can’t understand the gravity of the problem there. Politicians must move out their officers out of the important trading, business and dwelling zones to areas where they can be secured from terrorist attacks etc.We are relatively a poor country and our CEO of the country and other politicians must work from much humbler dwelling in the suburbs where they will not get in the way. Security can’t be used as an excuse to walk over people who put them there.SC is dammn right!

  58. [but should have road blocks and SLA posts, me thinks.
    ]

yep... i won't argue on that for a moment...
as much as it can be hassle it's an absolutely necessary evil we have to have... SLDF folks manning those places too suffer immense hardships, so it's only fair we too take some of that pain...

Fully closing main roads is not at all acceptable...
My point was that sadly gosl's best answer to certain security issues is closing roads without giving a damn about civilians. That attitude have to change...
I do not agree with SC decision to take out checkpoints and barricades, CJ once was on TV insulting troops who are manning those points saying they are scared to stop "suspicious" folks but only stop innocent civilians... The arsehole should get a nice grenade up his "u know what" for saying shit like that...
But at the same time i'm happy that somebody is seeing the side of civilian suffering too...
Sadly governments can get away with anything cos there's no voice for civilians
