Sea tiger base bombed: Mullaithiv

Sri Lanka Air Force fighter jets bombed a sea tiger base located in Alampil in LTTE stronghold of Mullaithiv district yesterday. The raids which were made yesterday afternoon, are reported to be accurate. No casualty details are available as of yet. The Air Force has shown more activity in the past week with its fighter jets and gunships both assisting the ground forces, even amidst bad weather conditions.

Meanwhile continuous rain in Mannar has greatly affected the ongoing operations by the army. The flood like situation and soggy ground conditions have made the deployment of armored vehicles near impossible. Ground forces advance has also slowed down as trenches dug and death traps set by the LTTE are now covered with water and are not easily visible. However against all odd the army captured LTTE controlled Ilantheevan, located to the south of Adampan junction on the 29th.

Meanwhile more than 500 soldiers have so far fallen to Chikengunya and Dengu diseases due to the worsening sanitary conditions in the front lines affected by rain. Necessary steps are being taken to prevent the spread of such diseases and reserve forces have been deployed in the affected areas.

Around two weeks ago Military Intelligence received fresh intel on the massive trench that is been dug in the northern FDL to stop the Mechanized Infantry Brigade which the tigers apparently consider to be a great threat. The multi layered trench complex with iron fences and reinforced concrete are supposed to not only stop the heavy armor from storming tiger defenses but the tigers are also planning to capture any vehicles that fall into them. Mechanized Infantry brigade has changed its strategy and future plans based on the new intel.

Sorry to hear this. Chickengunya is a debilitating disease. I am sure the tigers also have the same set of problems.

  2. Def. Net,

So the trench didn't get inundated by the rains? How deep is it? Did you guys see Sat. images of this?

BTW, there was a guy impersonating you in the last post.

  3. Def net. and others,

So can't the army send several groups of armor plated caterpillars to fill up the trench in couple of random places to facilitate the MID traversal?

  4. SLAF is retaliating repeatedly on sea tiger bases in response to the UFAC that was destroyed killing 10 sailors.

This is a very effective strategy against the LTTE as Israel uses against MULTIPLE terrorist groups in all directions.

rover, yes there is no reason why LTTE cadres are not suffering from it. Only thing is they don't care about them. SLA must ensure that no soldier dies from it.

    As regards the trench.....

When the SLA was constructing their defences, LTTE shelled them and stopped it. TN even carried a photo of a burnt bulldozer. Why couldn't we use a similar approach when LTTE dug these so called MASSIVE, CONCRETE/STEEL REINFORCED trenches. Surely, it would have taken a LONG TIME (at least a few weeks) to construct them and we had AMPLE TIME to disrupt their construction.

Someone said may be LTTE used civilians to do it. Not an answer. If civilians are making terrorist bunkers they can be killed. Also the SLDFs made NO ATTEMPT whatsoever to stop the LTTE building these trenches.

There is another trick here. Are these trenches between the new SLA FDL and LTTE's new FDL? (FDLs changed around 31 January 2008). Some say that it is between LTTE's new FDL and it's next (new second)FDL?????

If the latter is true it places LTTE's first FDL that is in front of the trench very vulnerable. If the former is true, as explained above, it requires an explanation why SLA didn't disrupt the construction?

This is a sad situ. and another reflection of lack of proactive decision making by SLA.

Defencenet, it is interesting to know what are the alternative plans SLA has to overcome this/by-pass this?? Answer only if it is not too sensitive. We apreciate your concerns for national security.

  5. If SLA can take neccesarry meastures to control spreding of diseases those will be natural set of weapons against LTTE. LTTE does not have medical faiclities for frontline fighters, only leaders have the luxury of getting proper medical treatments the way I know. Both mentioned diseases make the patient physically week for a considerable time and can be deadly if left neglected. So LTTE will have to take it seriously or else SLA can attain its goals of reducing LTTE fighters quite easily...

I get the feeling that SLA can bring down those bariors in LTTE FDL with troops and Ariel attacks. But casualities might go high. So LTTE will get something out of their effort...

I hope natural weapons will help SLA alot!

  7. Def.Net and Moshe,

I am surprised that LTTE cut a DEEP trench in this land. The water table (sea water) must be quite close to the surface around here (correct me if I am wrong).

That is why I am interested in knowing how deep the trench is, and if someone saw this (sat. images ect.). This could be misinformation fed by the LTTE to demoralize the MID.

  8. Anyway, Moshe, I agree with your comment on how such a massive trench was built under the very noses of the security forces.

  9. yes rover, anything that changes the relative power positions of the parties to war (or peace) is WAR ITSELF.

That is why LTTE hunted dwon over 80 LRRP and other intelligent wing operatives AT THE HEIGHT OF THE "ceasefire" agreement.

While eying at the big plan, SLDF command must take into account things that can affect their plan.

    1. why did we invent mechanised infantry.
    2. because it speeds up the SLA's charge
    3. becuase it saves many lives and limbs
    4. because it has many other efficiency improvements.
    5. because ................
    6. what factors sustain the effectiveness of the MI?
    7. can those be changed?
    8. what to do to keep them constant as possible?

In management they say 'changing the battlefield' strategy by the japanese, etc. is most fantastic. Unfortunately the LTTE deserves this credit if the story is true, which i believe it is.

last time we lost 16 AFVs; if things go like this we may lose even more this time!!!! DN says tigers are dreaming of capturing a few tanks, MI vehicles as well. possible.

if you analyse HOW the MI can stop that......MI will travel with tanks and the LTTE's Victor-anti-tank bastards will be taken care of by the MI guys. This clears the way for tanks to rpae tiger fortifications at will.

For some reason if the MI and tanks cannot get there, then there won't be any battle!! On the other hand if an amphibious landing is to take place, it defeats the whole purpose of the MI as transporting MI vehicles in a ship, etc. would be a big joke and tigers will have a field day.

SLDFs especially thse responsible for the 'national front' got to be more proactive.

BTW large trenches make things difficult for the LTTE if they want to capture SLA FDLs. Now they are REALLY on the defensive that they don't even think of that. this goes well with the "final war" bullshit. 5 years ago LTTE was harping on a "final war". now no LTTEer talks about that "final war".

  11. IMF faults Sri Lanka on double-digit inflation

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka's double-digit inflation is not driven by runaway global crude prices but by poor economic management, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Sunday.

The Indian Ocean island nation's official year-on-year inflation rate rose to 24.0 percent in February, up from 21.6 percent in January and 7.1 percent a year earlier.

The government, which is battling over three decades of war with Tamil Tiger rebels, has blamed accelerating inflation on rising in global crude oil, commodity and foodgrain prices.

However, the IMF report that studied Sri Lanka's inflation in 2006 and 2007 found that "external shock" such as oil prices were only partly to blame.

"Since late 2006, Sri Lanka's inflation has increased sharply relative to other economies in the region," said the 28-page report titled "Pass-Through of External Shocks to Inflation in Sri Lanka."

"The sharp increase in inflation compared to other countries in Asia points out that increases in oil prices in the recent past cannot explain most of the increase in inflation in Sri Lanka."

The study found that most of the inflation in Sri Lanka is home-grown.

It said only 25 percent of recent consumer inflation could be explained by external factors with oil accounting for about six percent, import prices 11 percent and the exchange rate about 10 percent.

The fund concluded that "domestic shocks likely play a more significant role on inflation in Sri Lanka," indicating that better economic policies were needed to lower inflation.

"With external shock not playing a major role in influencing domestic inflation, domestic policies can be very important in containing inflation," the report said.

Sri Lanka's fiscal policy reversed sharply in 2004, when the then-government began to hire more people into the already-bloated public sector and stopped privatising loss-making state entities, which lead to higher budget deficits.

In 2004, inflation, which was close to zero in the first quarter, was driven towards 20 percent by the end of the year with oil subsidies themselves being financed with central bank credit.

  12. Moshe Dayan,

I agree with most of what you said. But the deeper trench will not be a barrier for infantry if they leave footpaths intact (which will still be an impediment to the MID). They must have thought about this for sure.

It is crucial that we do not let the LTTE prolong the use of the MID. As our causalities will soar, making it a political headache for the gov. We need to find out ways on breaching the LTTE defenses and using the MID to save life and limb.

But there could be several places in this locality where a deep trench can never be made, such as closer to the sea. But these places will be heavily mined. So we need to get some mine breaching systems and get to work.

They could even have kept a couple of passages open for the forces to walk through, and when they do, to take those passages out, trapping our armed vehicles within their territory. All these need to be taken into account.

Anyway, it was a grave mistake to have let them build the trench in the first place. So many headaches could have been averted.

LTTE is a particularly nasty problem. It is an organization that is terrorizing civilians of a country to achieve a political goal. If you are politically so correct you should see that as well.

Thanks for taking the side of singalese despite your true identity. By the way, this no longer is about Sinhala or Tamil, it is about maintaining the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. Mad Velu and LTTE, as proven many many times, have no intention to settle anything less than Eelam. So my friend, we have no option other than defending our homeland. That is what Douglas, Karuna and Pillayan have realized and working on. Care to join the anti-LTTE camp here. If so, you are most welcome.

  16. LTTE is a Nasty problem. But who created it. The politicians in our side. There was no LTTE in 1956 when the singala only act was passed. It is our politicians who completely ignored Tamils Rights. And LTTE is an outcome of that product.

LTTE is a terrorist organization. I don't have any doubts about that. At the same time the Rajapaksae brothers and Foneska are equally terrorizing the poor tamil people.

  21. My shadow,

Ok, this is going to be long, because I don't have the URL. Read this and it is written by a Tamil.

    An answer to Satheesan Kumaran
Tamils must ask for what is reasonable and accept their role in the conflict
    by S. Rasalingam

One of the important, and valid messages contained in Satheesan Kumaran's message, published in the Midweek review if The Island of 20th February is that we need bridge-building among the different communities. But he observes it in the breach.

Hurling accusations does not help. He claims, "The ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka between the Sinhalese and Tamil-speaking has been a creation by the Sinhala leaders". Then Kumaran proceeds to attack Theravada Buddhism, and gives advice to Buddhist monks. He says "Irresponsible words of politicians in Colombo will only add fuel to the flames of destruction engulfing Sri Lanka politically, economically, militarily, culturally and socially, rather than educate communities on the importance of co-existence." He goes onto claim "what Sri Lankan politicians really want is to create a society of voiceless citizens remote-controlled by a bunch of politicians."

Surely, such voiceless citizens already live in the Vanni and how did that come about? We Tamils have not understood how we dug our own graves.

Kumaran says, "A national consensus can only be achieved when the Sinhalese embrace the minorities and win their hearts and minds". Here again it seems that only the Sinhalese have to act. Don't we Tamils have to also act to reassure the majority?

As an aging Tamil who has observed Tamil-Sinhala politics since the 1940s, I cringe to see the continued repetition of simplified and historically incorrect hurling of accusation, even by a man who recognizes the need for building bridges between communities. People of Kumaran's generation do not know that politicians like D. S. Senanayake (DS) tried to create a "Ceylonese" nation.

Much false propaganda has been generated and good men like DS have been besmirched. People like Ponnambalam Ramanathan, in collusion with Governor Maitland introduced the principle of "communal representation" in the legislative process. Some Sinhala leaders rejected this ("Ramanathan's deception"), and then came the Donoughmore commission which proposed Universal Franchise.

Surely, it was a defining moment when the Colombo Tamil leaders decided that their dominant position would be threatened, unless they separated themselves from the Sinhalese, and call for a separate identity. G. G. Ponnambalam (GGP) in the State Council in 1934 declared that he was "a proud Dravidian" and rejected the "Ceylonese" concept of a polity of a single people. Natesan and others followed suit, as a reading of the political history of the times will reveal. Ponnambalam lent his voice to a movement which began to attack Sinhala Buddhists, and the Mahavamsa, their famed historical chronicle. Should I remind Mr. Kumaran that the first Sinhala-Tamil Riot occurred in 1939, in Navalapitiya, and spread to Passara, Maskeliya and to many other towns, when the Colonial government stepped in and stamped it out?

The riot was sparked by the inflammatory racist speech of GGP in Navalapitiya, attacking the Sinhala Buddhists and the Mahavamsa (see The Hindu Organ, June 1, 1939 and other newspapers of the time). It was then that S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike (SWRD) saw an opportunity, and went to every one of the cities touched by the riots, and established branches of the Sinhala Maha Sabha (see The Hindu Organ, June 19, 1939). It was in this extremely heated atmosphere that GGP developed his fifty-fifty solution as a means of safeguarding the dominant position of the Tamils. Far from bridging the gap between the communities, every action of GGP was designed to drive this "difference" between the Tamils - descendants of the Dravidians, and the Sinhalese, a "hybrid mongrel race split of from the aboriginal Tamils and mixed with Aryan invaders" (as stated by GGP in Navalapitiya in 1939).

The racism of the GGP et al was matched by the SWRD group. It would seem that SWRD the feudal aristocrat, and GGP the caste-conscious Catholic lawyer, were both power-hungry manipulators of the people for further their own interests. The elder statesmen of the times, i.e., Baron Jayatilleke, D. S. Senanayake (DS), Mahadeva etc. charted a reasonably non-communalist line.

DS in particular realized that public confrontations would be a grave obstacles to independence and bridge-building between the communities. When the Soulbury commission arrived, Senanayake managed to get the "Young Turks" like SWRD and others not to appear before Soulbury, and imposed a formal boycott while making room for informal contacts. GGP however appeared before the Soulbury commission and whenever possible for three months, claiming that the Tamils were being discriminated against in jobs, education, health, colonization settlements, etc. He even objected to the declaration of Anuradhapura as an archaeological conservation area as an act of discrimination. The Soulbury Commissioners rejected virtually all of GGP's claims as being without foundation. It rejected the 50-50 demand, i.e., equal number of seats to the 12% Tamils and 75% Sinhalese as an attempt to subvert democracy.

The Sinhala leaders refrained from public confrontation with GGP during the Soulbury period, and this led to a sense of healing between the communities. The state council approved the Soulbury proposals overwhelmingly. GGP leading the Tamil Congress(TC), as well as SWRD and other Sinhala nationalists joined the DS cabinet which believed in the "ceylonese" concept (see Senanayake's Acceptance Speech in the Hansard 1947).

Meanwhile, dark clouds were gathering. The ultra-nationalist Tamil wing led by S. J. V. Chelvanayakam (SJV) was not happy. They grumbled about GGP's approach, and proposed that instead of 50-50, the Tamils must pursue the "Two-Nation" concept, where the Tamils are equal to, and distinct from the Sinhalese. SJV said that Tamils should pursue their separate destiny. The opportunity to break from GGP arose with the Indian Citizenship Act. Most Ceylonese leaders and the Colonial government had become worried that the Indian Tamil workers and the Estate sector would fall into the hands of the Marxists who had began militant agitations. The new citizenship act required that only persons with seven years of residency could become citizens and vote in elections, thus eliminating transients. GGP and most other Tamils voted for it. But SJV declared that GGP was a "traitor" to the Tamil cause and used the moment to create the Tamil Arasu Kachchi. SJV contended that the Citizenship Act violated minority rights, and challenged it, and the government, in the courts, and in the Privy Council in London. The unequivocal judgments were that there has been no discrimination before or after the Act, and that the citizenship requirements were as reasonable as in the most liberal European states at the time.

Nevertheless, the Arasu Kachchi kept on agitating, determined to drive a wedge between the two communities, i.e., even among the anglicized Colombo citizens. I have attended meetings in Jaffna where the Arasu Kachchi talked of a separate Tamil nation, while in Colombo they sounded moderate and talked of federalism. A golden opportunity for the Arasu Kachchi arrived with the election of SWRD as PM. SWRD was a politician who recognized the rights of minorities, and an accommodation could have been easily reached with him. But the Arasu Kachchi's public position in Jaffna was well known to the Sinhala nationalists who had deep distrust of SJV, E.M.V. Naganathan and others. If there is no trust, there can be no political Pact.

It is easy to blame the "Buddhist monks" for the failure of the Banda- Chelva Pact. But what did this Banda-Chelva Pact ask for? It asked for Tamil administrative regions in the North and East. At that time, just as today, the East involved Muslims and Sinhalese and Tamils. The Muslims opposed the Banda-Chelva Pact. The Sinhalese in the East opposed the B-C pact. The Arasu Kachchi had done NOTHING to build bridges between the two communities and win their confidence. Instead, they used every opportunity to confront the Singhalese. Ponnambalam and the TC also opposed the B-C Pact.

The B-C pact was NOT based on discrimination. It was based on the "Homeland Concept". It asked for the same 2/3 coastal area and land area as a "homeland" for the Tamils (12% of the population) that the LTTE today is asking for. If the Arasu Kachchi had only asked for the Northern province and if its leaders had reassured the Sinhalese and Muslims, the B-C Pact would have had some chance of survival.

If the proposed B-C pact had actually got enacted, the Sinhala nationalists would have demanded the Tamils living in Weallawatai and Kottachenai to leave. The 1983 Black July would have happened decades earlier.

I have began from the Donoughmore Era and reviewed the history to indicate to young people like Satheesan Kumaran that the story is not black and white, with the Sinhalese doing all the bad things and "creating the ethnic divide", while the Tamils meekly performed "satyagraha" to win their rights both sides have been at fault.

The Tamils in the Vanni and other areas are not like their caste conscious counterparts in, whose only desire has been to retain their political power, and rule the North as absent landlords. The Vanni Tamils ("Malabars" in the language of the 1815 Kandyan Treaty, and also in Cleghorn's report to the Colonial office), like the Singhalese, have a lot in common as our religion, social organization and language are very similar to that of the Sinhalese people. Although GGP and SJV attempted to emphasize differences, these are the same stock of people with mere superficial differences.

The LTTE is a creation of the elitist Colombo Tamils who decided to use the lower caste "boys" in far-flung areas to promote their misguided political struggle making our children mere cannon fodder. Meanwhile, their children, kith and kin have gone abroad and continue to finance a psychopath who has eliminated out teachers, our kurukals, writers, journalists, political leaders and thinkers, so as to create a subservient society toeing his line with no questions asked, in the name of Eelam.

So, Kumaran what is there to be negotiated?

Kumaran is proposing conflict resolution via negotiations. As Anton Balasingham once stated, "Only the borders remain to be negotiated". It should not be forgotten that the Arasu Kachchi, while talking of Gandhian methods, secretly supported the creation of young militant groups. SJV personally met and worked with Sivakumaran, who was the first to commit suicide by swallowing cyanide.

I am sorry to say that the Tamil leaders of the 1930s, and then the ultra-nationalist activism of the SJV platform have been largely responsible for the plight of the Tamils today. Blaming the Sinhalese for all our ills won’t do. We need to soften our acrimonious uncompromising stand.

[War is not an option, neither for the singalese or the tamils]

NOT waging war was never an option for the Sinhelas or Sinhalese (NOT “singalese” btw; pls. note “linguistic genocide” is a heinous crime too! LMSSAO!)

Today Sri Lanka is an independent, sovereign nation (i.e. and not another Indian state) only because the Sinhelas of yester year were the bravest of the brave warriors this planet has ever witnessed and they beat back invasion upon invasion from South India despite their smaller numbers in the tiny island of Sri Lanka.

Yes, I agree war should have never been an option for the Tamils as there was no need for it…from the repeated invasion of SL from Tamilnadu in the history to the utterly racist, communally inflammatory behaviours during the late colonial times, to which the origins of today’s conflict can be traced. As Rover very aptly showed with his post earlier, GGP, Chelva etc. were also actually another bigoted “Prabhakaran” on their own.

As for the results of the “war” I suggest you travel to the East and witness how the eastern Tamils are now setting up their political identity within one-country, Sri Lanka – without racist and communal sentiments thrown to hurt others – and soon they will be the proof in the pudding why this “liberation war” is the only option to end this endless death and destruction that have plagued us for the past 30 years!

So, LTTE supporting misguided skunk, I say nice try on your part to mislead the bloggers here, but alas as usually is the case today with most LTTE attempts, it went poof I see! LMSSAO!!!

p.s. Rover: yep, "to be precise" as Thompson and Thompson would say, it went poof! :)) :)) :))

  44. Guys,
This is what an LTTE cunt said earlier.
"Foneska says that the war will not end until 2009"

He has gotten it from a shitty newspaper (pro LTTE)"sunday leader". This is how the report began.

"Forces chiefs tell President war will continue till end 2009"

The report is about the secret meeting between the Armed forces commanders and the president (and few more generals). Don't expect this pro-LTTE paper to know what were discussed in that meeting. The fucks are trying to demoralize us by spreading false information. (As they claim, if they can get the above information discussed among the top defense officials in the country, we would have already lost the war to terrorists).
Please don't base your analysis on shitty news items.
This cunt "my shadow" who try to sound like a sinhala is a tamil LTTEr(I don't have anything against tamils). How do I know this? Look at the way he writes the word "sinhala".
In his own words "There was no LTTE in 1956 when the "singala" only act was passed." Inverted commas are mine. As usual LTTErs are lying cunts.

Tigers are not giving a good fight in the war front now days. They do a much better job fighting for their “animal rights”. Very few terrorists eat cyanide these days. Under the interrogations all of them spill lot of beans. Rate of civilians crossing over to the government side increases every day, # of terras getting killed rising day by day, # of LTTE cunts crying all over the place multiplying many fold everyday, the situation is changing. What these cunts don't understand is that the war is not static anymore. It is very dynamic and accelerating. Every passing day we get stronger and they get weaker. The terror org. is going to break within.
Since they can't defeat our forces, there are only two ways left for them to delay or stop their tragic end.
    1. Decapitation strike on the president and the army commander.

    2. Destroy Colombo harbor (a must) and other possible economic targets in Colombo.

The first one would be the easiest and the president being careless and stubborn is our weakest link.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The trenches are flooded. The troops are being afflicted by mosquito borne diseases. We can assume that the same problems are affecting the LTTE too. On the positive side, the millions of Johnnie battas that the LTTE have buried near the Mannar front are completely submerged under water. I wonder if these crude home made
but effective pressure activated anti-personnel mines will function in water logged conditions or whether a significant percentage of these will fail. There are certain types of mines that can last for decades in arid environments. Mines in places like Angola that were laid in the 70s are still exploding. Nevertheless, in a tropical environment, in water logged conditions, most types of munitions will fail. Sometimes, the primers of riffle bullets fail. I don't know the exact mechanics of the Johnny battas but I assume these are not water proof and that the primer, explosive charge, and mechanical mechanism will probably fail under the the current weather conditions.

The primer and will probably fail.

  48. It's very interesting to see how the balance of power has shifted both on the battefield and on these blogs. Around 6 months ago, LTTE Terrorists supporters were saying Singhayas(la) need not give them Eelam, Thalaiver will take it... Now they are begging: why are we after blood and appealing to our Buddhist conscience. They must think they are really smart Tamils and that we are really stupid Sinhalas. That's ok with me.

I do feel sorry for the innocent Tamil blood that is being spilled in this war against Terrorism. I feel sorry that the President has to tolerate scum in order to bring about consensus and unity in the country. I feel sorry that I get stopped at checkpoints. I feel sorry for the ordinary Tamil people who get stopped at checkpoints. And I feel sorry (and proud) about our soldiers dying to defend this country from a scourge worse than any plague.

I feel sorry about all of the above BUT I WILL NOT LET THE LTTE Terrorists (or any other ethnic group) grab land that belongs to all Sri Lankans of all ethnicities. I will withstand whatever hardship and sacrifice that is necessary, for however long it takes, to grind each and every one of these LTTE Terrorists maggots into the dustbin of history.

I have one question for the LTTE supporters and diaspora who accuse us of being gullible: Just think what if the LTTE leaders are feeding you wrong information about this war regarding the real situation in the Wanni and at the battlefronts? What is really happening to your poor Tamil brothers and sisters in the Wanni? You have already allowed this LTTE curse to thrive and grow amongst you to spread hatred and ethnic separation. You have funded all their wars. Are you going to continue to fund the destruction of your entire Tamil community in the North and East? Is this what you gave the dollars or pounds for? Think twice before you give money again. You are the real "killers" of the innocent Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka. You are the reason why our human rights are being trampled on. You... yes, you Tamils in UK, Norway, Canada, US, Australia - wherever you have sought out "refugee" status or emigrated to under the pretext of being victims of racial discrimination and victims of this war.

    ReplyDelete
  52. One of the main reasons that the Army is now succeeding is because there is a multi-tiered force. Previously the army had a range of responsibilities from static guard duty to front line operations. The range of responsibilities tied down most of the army in a purely defensive role reducing its overall effectiveness. Now there is a multi-tiered force that consists of (1) Special Forces and Commandos (2) Front Line Regiments (4) Support Regiments (5) Naval and Airforce Infantry (6) Civil Defence Force. Because of this multi-tiered force, the top notch troops can focus on offensive combat operations while the other elements can focus on static and defensive operations. The Civil Defence Force that is recruited from border villages is an important part of this multi-tiered force.

but war is likely to go until 2009if we continue at this run rate though it is no fault of us. The fault is with the LTTE; they don't die ENOUGH. refer to my calculation.

that makes no LTTE MF happy; because to speed up the war, we need to kill them MORE, MORE and MORE.

hopefully MR will give the necessary support to speed up the war without unduely risking anyone's life.

  54. Dear All,

First of all, I would like to clarify DefenceNet's posting with some figures obtained from Tamil websites.

The Sea Tiger base that was hit is known as "Soosai Base" because this is where the Sea Tiger leader Soosai spends much of his time. It is believed that Soosai himself was either killed or seriously injured in the attack. All LTTE radio communication in the area has gone silent. In addition, 108 LTTE cadres, most of this "body guards" of Soosai also perished in this "successful" air raid.

Chikengunya has affected the LTTE as well, despite them being natives of the current theatre of battle and withdrawing to higher ground. It is reliably learnt that around 1, 200 LTTE carders have thus for succumbed to this disease. LTTE cadres do not have the medical facilities that are available to the forces, so they died fairly quickly.

The "bunker line" in Muhamalai was actually constructed by the "Norwegians". The forces did not target the construction site for fear of international condemnation. But being "brave hearts", be assured that they will march over and beyond this bunkerline.

Please do no assume the above to be an alternative to DefenceNet's expertise. I am only complementing his postings with information i have gathered from elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey,
Time cannot be a problem to anyone.
We have been enduring this war for more than 25 years and another 4-5 years is not a problem.
We should not speedup war, just to have some fanfare. Such victories won't last long. (remeber Jayasikuru) So we have to move slowly without putting our soldiers in undue risk.
As far as the economy is concerned, our economy has been adapted to the war like situation.
But the recent economic problems are not mainly due to war but due to Corruption and mismanagement on the side of the government. That has to be corrected.
Onthe other hand there is no other better alternative than attacking Tigers. Otherwise they will attack us like they did during the ceasefire.
Although we can endure this war longer, LTTE won't be able to do that. That's why they are crying for peace and forcing their agents here and abroad to shout against GOSL.
Attack is our best defence. While doing that the govt. should try to correct itself & stop being stupid on economic & propaganda fronts.

P.S: We should not reply Tiger ass lickers since they are shouting in desperation. They won't simply change though they know they are wrong!

Better forget about about capturing north and redeploy 1,2,3 Commando & 1,2,3 Special Forces Regiments (every single man in them, not just small parts) in the area immediately to find these people.....

  81. Guys,

If what the MI says - the trench complex behind second FDL - is true, it is further proof that sticking to high tech devices alone can be a disaster in the long run: the presence of multitude of UAV does not seem to detect these activities, which is not over-night work. Perhaps, a thick layer of clouds may have kept these activities from exposure. Since the formation of mechanized unit has been an open secret, it is foolish of us to assume that the Tigers did not come up with something to counter the threat.

Theatre of war is something that evolves by the hour, if not second. Flexibility in terms of planning, deployment and the structure of the command provides a platform to get round this challenge.

J S B Jeyaraj in bottomline talk about the trench phenomenon in an exaggerated fashion, as if the army was going to run away with the tail between the legs, giving up on everything.

I would like to remind the gentleman that the Tigers do not have the monopoly of invention.

Need any evidence to prove my point?

Man first invented spear and then went on rampage getting rid of those who did not have that luxury - but not for ever. Then another one invented the shield and the power of the former pale into insignificance faster than one can say spear.

    Hope, Jeyaraj got my point.

    ReplyDelete
  82. qrious,

"it is foolish of us to assume that the Tigers did not come up with something to counter the threat."

Actually the trench is not an idea of the LTTE. This has been used since world war II to counter armoured assaults.

I agree with your ideas on this trench. The LTTE suporters seem to think that they have built an uncrossable barrier, but I don't see how this alone can stop the armoured vehicles from advancing. If the assault is planned well, involving heavy artillery and MBRL attacks and close air support to keep the LTTE pinned down, and an infantry attack as well, the armoured vehicles will be able to cross without much difficulty. LTTE won't have much of a chance to defend their lines against the advancing tanks, much less capture them.

  83. qurious,
"I would like to remind the gentleman that the Tigers do not have the monopoly of invention."

Apparently, when the LTTE even hear the sound of Kfir or Migs, the only counter-measure they have is to shit in their pants, abandon their positions and run into the jungles. They had even abandoned the prisoners they were supposed to be guarding, in this case the fishermen.

  92. Here is myshadow''s solution to the war;

Since we are buddhists we can't kill. So when LTTE fire don't fire. In this way LTTE can easily end the war (sinhalese and SL too.)

Buddhists can't kill, so don't join SLA is the messege to be spread. GSL itself did earlier under CBK and mongal via some NGOs.

In this logic no buddhists be in SLA and/or there can't be any SLA. If Buddha was here in this time we could have known to which hell this tiger will go.

DN, I dont think this is 100% true when it comes to the dreaded 'Land Mine'...
As someone pointed out sometime back, the no 1 casualties suffered by the Army are due to land mines.
And also the main reason for the Army's slow progress is this land mine issue....

Besides, the killing in this war is done to save even more lives from being destroyed. If the LTTE was not eliminated, the bastards are going to keep killing and killing until they get what they want. And it won't stop at that, if they get it more extremist groups will come up and put up their own demands. I don't know why the people who are saying that killing is enough and that we should give them eelam doesn't understand this. The killing is not going to stop because we give LTTE their eelam, it's just going to increase.

  105. Peter's above arguemnet is an example for a fallacy. In AL classes we were given this kind of arguements and had to say why it was wrong. I guess good one, well written.

    ______________________________________________

Peter is really not looking for answer. But if any one else has the same question this might help.

//“Though there are Tamils in India, there are no Sinhalas in that country. Neither the Sinhala language is spoken in any part of India. Though the Vijaya story claims that the Sinhalas came from Vanga or Bengal or Bangladesh, no Bangladeshi or a west Bengali in India would recognise the Sinhalas are the cousins of Bengalis.”

As Hela Havula has pointed out Pandukabhaya period could be identified as the time during which the Sinhala nation came to be established. What is important here is that the Sinhala nation, the Sinhala language and the Sinhala language were not created by some outsiders or immigrants who came to this country. They came into existence as a result of mixing of Indo Aryans who migrated from North India and the non Aryan non Dravidian Hela people who had lived in the country for thousands of years.//

  108. "Sinhalese came from India" is widely beleived, widely accepted statement. But this statement is false. Simply becuz of there were no sinhalese in india (to come here.) SOme people came to SL from India some time ago, mixed with local people and the new langauge and nation formed known as sinhalese.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Ninja,

    Respect...

My name is not a Sinhala name (just as yours isn't). As such I am not too worried about what people think about it. After all, who knows what the two syllables “nin - ja” sound like in some language in the world.

However, I do understand your concern about my name being misunderstood/misused to be derogatory towards our Pukka Land. Am I right?

If it sounds like “kunuharupa” to anyone, that is because:

    1) They don't pronounce it correctly

    2) They don't know the meanings of the root words

    3) Combination of two above

If it makes my fellow PukkaLankans happy I could change my name to PakaLanka (subject to availability). It would break my parents’ heart to see their only daughter change her birth name and getting her English spelling wrong. But what can one do? I would only consider it but a small, tiny in fact, sacrifice I could make towards my Pukkaland…ooops …errm….Pakaland (sorry, just getting used to it... ).

Apart from that, what do you think of the contents of my posts? That is the really important bit, is it not?

    I think yours are great...

  169. Guys,

Chandrika talks about making three mistakes; she had counted her mistakes during her reign, very painstakingly indeed, and got the number right - exactly three mistakes.

One of them, according to her, is kicking out the government headed by Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Everyone with an ounze of commonsense knows that is the only right thing she did during her despicable reign, yet she calls it a mistake.

She brands good work as mistakes and I am sure the reverse is true as well - bad deeds make her moral account grow.

This strange phenomenon - see everything in reverse order - can only be explained by one rational thinking: she may be standing on her head these days.

Her new field of vision may show her Zimbabve as the best country to live in with an inflation plummetting faster than a meteorite.

However, she should realize that this physical manourver brings her saree down, by gravitational pull. We see everthing she kept from us all these years; it is so disgusting; that is another matter any way.

  170. Qrious,

CBK's two stated mistakes are correct as far as she and her dynasty is concerned.

    1. had she not dissolved the UNP govt. in 2004 what would happen?

Anura would have contested the 2005 election from PA. The UNP would be in real SHIT with LTTE trouble, oil prices, continued strikes, tsunami, etc. and the bafoon could have won the election over all these MASSIVE problems.

    2. not formed an alliance with the JVP in 2004.

however the 2001 alliance is OK for her. the 2004 alliance ended all hope for anura and her.

now she is after the Nobel Prize and to win it she should be somebody and do something that makes the norwegians happy. what better way to do it than by combining the UNP and SLFP as she has her boys in both camps?

this woman knows how to get things! her mistakes are others' good luck.

OK, here's the news I was waiting to show you patriots who started panicking upon hearing from RW=LTTE biased media that "STF is leaving the East due to Pallaiyan's demands" that such stories were rubbish and the real reason was to deploy them in the North to contain LTTE threats, especially attacks on Sinhela civilians as when LTTE are losing cadres and territory at the scale they are losing today, the likely target becomes the poor, hapless civilians.

    [STF takes over Anuradhapura security

    by Norman Palihawadana

The elite Police Special Task Force took over the security of the Anuradhapura District from Saturday (30). Special units have been deployed in the terrorist threatened areas such as Kebithigollewa, Dutewewa and Nikawewa.

STF Commandant DIG L. M. L. Sarathchandra said special security zones had been demarcated to provide security to the terrorist threatened areas to prevent a recurrence of attacks on civilians by the LTTE. The STF has set up nine camps.

He said all STF personnel were given instructions to build good public relations with the people of the district and to keep the public informed of the importance of being vigilant on any unusual movements in their localities.

The STF now provides security for the 57-kilometer main road from Anuradhapura, the supply route to the remote Kebithigollewa division and for the 22-kilometer road from Kebithigollewa to Dutuwewa and Nikawewa. These roads have been made high security zones the STF Commandant said.]

Large scale slaughter of Sinhela civilians will be a big blow to the GOSL’s thus far effective military campaign against the LTTE filth and I think proactively, it has done the right thing with this maneuver.

  186. Moshe Dyan,

As you have projected, i did not run away because, i could not answer your question. I have to earn for my bread and butter. Unlike you elite guys

This country has full of terrorists. On the Tamil Side LTTE is a terrorist organization. TMVP is another organization. Douglas is a Thug.
On the singhalese side, MR is a terrorist. His brothers are a bunch of terrorists who are citizens of USA and they don't have any business here. JVP is a terrorist group. Unfortunatly i was one of the staunch follower of JVP and their Marxist philosophy during by 20s. And all the Buddisht Monks who support war are terrorists in the Buddhist Mask. No true Buddhist will ever support war.

Unfortunately there can't be peace without terrorist MR, terrorist JVP and terrorist LTTE.

We have to form a international safety net with the assurance of peace just like what Ranil did when he was the Prime Minister. Ranil's strategy worked well. He was able to rope in international countries like USA, European Union, Japan along with Norway. This has ensured that the country had a peaceful atmosphere where both singhalese and tamils were living in peace for most of the ceasefire period. I agree that LTTE did ceasefire violation. However there was check and balance. EU banned LTTE during this period where LTTE started its terrorist activities. We should have sustanined the peace. Then LTTE would have been in trouble. They were not able to get out of the international safety net. Ranil created the excellent oppurtunity.

MR spoiled it by abandoning the cease fire

That's the kind of peace treaty we need. With Assurance of International mediation where both the parties have a stake and also to ensure that none of them backtrack from the peace.

  187. My Shadow,

Sorry mate you have been profiled, and you are an LTTE supporter.

"click on the below link and check who did this ? and why are you allowing this racist comment"

The comment of SL, can only be racists if you are an LTTE maggot. If you are a Sinhalese, you can't call this a racist remark.

"War is not an option, neither for the singalese or the tamils"

A Sinhala person will never say that he is a Singalaese (and it sounds vulger as well sin+gala).

And all your preaching starts when the LTTE gets their backside busted. Go to LTTE sites and preach (there are 100s).

"LTTE does something spectacular similar to Anuradhapura in the South, the status quo will be altered..."

While you are preaching, you call the attack on Sinhalese "spectacular". Only someone who is glorifying terrorism can call that spectacular.

  188. My Shadow,

You call everyone a terrorist. What is your definition of a terrorist?

  189. "They were not able to get out of the international safety net. Ranil created the excellent oppurtunity."

Safety net my foot! At what expense? Almost 80 of the very best MI agents were hunted down, Artillery guns were brought in, Kadiragamar was killed, ect. ect.

So can you call this a safety net? What is the meaning of safety????

  190. MS,

    you said,

"Unfortunately there can't be peace without terrorist MR, terrorist JVP and terrorist LTTE."

    i'm confused.

if you call the CFA peace, you are a barbarian! during the CFA how many anti-LTTE people died especially 2002-2005? the best SL foreign minister was killed by the LTTE DURING THE "CEASEFIRE"!!

    are you a lunatic ?

or is killing civilians in the guise of peace something that you like (in that case you are a REAL CANIBAL)?

    you talked about buddhism.

buddhism is under threat from LTTE. they attacked dalada maligawa, sri maha bodhi, killed 35 young monks in arantalawa, many more elsewhere, thousands of buddhists, destroyed buddhist temples, etc. etc.

unless we wipe out the LTTE, buddism won't survive.

you talked big of SL being a buddhist country. why is it still a buddhist country?

becasue our great kings (especially wijayabahu the great, mahasen, parakramabahu the great) genocided LTTE terrorist invaders during that time. had they not done in for the sake of buddhist teachings, SL would not have a single buddhist.

that explains why buddhist monks have come forward to protect the nation because without doing so the buddhist shasana won't survive.

i'm not a buddhist and i think it is stupidity of buddhists that kept the anti-SL people well fed, freely educated, freely medicated and etc., etc.

Had SL been a christian country, not only LTTE but even their relatives won't be living today.

but buddhists must protect SL at all cost

  191. My Shadow,

    "oh...is it so ?
then why are you sitting in front of your computer ?

Why can't you join army and fight it out ?

you sit in front of the computer and write all these theories. A poor fellow in a poor family for the need of money joins army and dies there..."

Poor sod, when the first creatures crawled out of the primeval slime, resource partitioning occurred. And it is most obvious in the more advanced animals like ourselves. We don't all do the same thing - like bacteria.

So some contribute to the war in different ways. Some make money and invest in Sri Lanka, some others grow food, manufacture products and contribute to the economy, yet others do research, including military research and contribute that way, there are MI agents that go through information and find patterns to get bloody terrorists, there are journalist who highlight the brutality of the LTTE, so basically you don't need to fight in the front lines to contribute to win against the LTTE. But all of us face pretty much the same risk because of the LTTE. I am sorry that you don't even get this.

  193. There was a session on the so called ethnic problem of Sri Lanka at George Washington University, Washington, DC yesterday. It was conducted under the guise of a academic session. Most of the attendees were students of the university. The moderator was a professor from the school of International Affairs. All of the speakers were basically LTTE frontmen. The panel included the LTTE's U.S. $30,000 per month lobbyst/representative of the white race, Bruce Fein, Dr. Pakiasorthy Saravanamuththu, and some Tamil chap who has written a book on the Tamil cause who is highly praised by Tamil.net. Not sure how these jokers organized this so called academic session. Naturally, no Sinhalese person was included on the so called panel.
One of my family members went there with the intention of heckling these jokers (of course done in a proper academic manner). Family member made 60 copies of the latest FBI report on the LTTE, which states that LTTE is worse the Al Qaeda, and got two students to distribute the report to the attendees present before the session got started. Family member said that Dr. Saravanamuththu made some really outrageous statements like "Tamil people are being taken to beaches and shot by Sri Lanka Govt." Family member gave a very spirited defence of Sri Lanka and challenged Dr. S. by asking him to provide the factual basis for some of his outrageous claims. Family member said that there are human right violations occur where ever conflict occurs but that democratic governments do not intentionally commit human right violations. Kind of a sad situation to see Tamil intellectuals like Dr. Saravanamuththu being totally subservient to the LTTE. May be they are afraid that the LTTE will bump them off.

    Side effect,

The last sentence of the article is a dead give away "which quotes unnamed intelligence sources." This is standard language of one of our neighboring countries. Most likely planted by RAW. There is no truth to this article.

  198. Hello thambala,

My relative takes all the credit not me. He is completely dedicated to the cause. He is not alone. There are many other patriots like him in this and other parts of the world doing small things but collectively making a impact. With dedicated patriots all over the world, the tide is turning against the LTTE. The end of the LTTE will come soon.

    Regards
