LTTE maintains radio silence after air strike

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) maintained radio silence after a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) raid targeted one of its highly secured military complexes deep inside the jungles east of Iranamadu today morning. LTTE also ordered all shops in Kilinochchi town to be closed down immediately following the aerial raid. SLAF used 6 fighter jets simultaneously in one of the largest air strikes in the 4th Eelam War. However there is still no confirmation on any injuries caused to the LTTE leader Prabhakaran, who was supposedly present at the base during the bombing.

In the northern front, soldiers from 10th Gajaba regiment, 8th Gemunu watch and Commando regiment carried out several limited operations ahead of newly captured areas in Uliyankulam. LTTE casualty details in these operations are not available as of now.

At least 20 LTTE cadres have been killed in sporadic clashes that erupted in Mannar, Vavuniya and Weli Oya fronts in the last three days.

  1. Tamilnet:

Liberation Tigers Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan Wednesday evening refuted the claims by the Sri Lanka Air Force that it had hit a location of the leader of the LTTE Velupillai Pirapaharan Wednesday morning. Stating that Colombo was spreading false propaganda, Mr. Ilanthirayan said the SLAF attack targeted civilian settlements at Vaddakkachchi twice between 11:10 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. and in the evening between 5:15 and 6:00 p.m.

  4. The handle SF on LNP just updated with the following

"Here is the latest folks...there is nothing pretty much...

top Intel sources are confident that the target was present at the time of the attack as it does not have any information to the effect that he has left.

but SF learns that none of the top Intel sources whithin the ltte or in vanni dealing with military intelligence and state Intel agencies have made contact with Colombo as of a hour ago.

this is not a strange phenomenon as its not usual practice for the sources to not make contact in the immediate aftermath of a strike for safety reasons...

my next update will be in about 3 hours when ill get the chance to talk to a topmost person who is presently charing a meeting of defence and intelligence officlas..."

Army snipers deployed in Mannar front gunned down an LTTE terrorists this morning, January 23. According to the available information the incident took place at 8.40 a.m in Adampan.

LTTE claimed yesterday to have killed SLA with snipers

    today SLA have snipers

    is this a coincidence ?

  15. two weeks ago there was a drill in katunayake which tested how quickly they can locate LTTE Air craft(PRABA Air) By using Y12 aircraft with out lights at night.withing seconds Search light operator located Y12.Y12 is going much faster than ltte zillin's. So I am dam sure we are safe in katunayake and fighter planes. Newly built fighter plane hangers walls are thicker than 5feet concretes.(If you traveling aboard u can see it if u go to the peir.) So technically no problem.

    ReplyDelete
  16. matara aiya
good to hear that but the hitch is like it happened at AAB attack... If a ground team is also involved or even some form of another diversion... concentrating on protecting the air space would be made much tougher.
Hope our forces are prepared for this and it's good that the army also has got involved in protecting airbases...
Even if tiger aircraft were to make another appearance...chances are that they will surprise us with something new...
Hopefully we can return the favor :)

But I know there are six lines of defense plus 200 commandos and 100 odd RSF(Air force commandos) plus dozens of best snippers(Air force)and so many QRT's.Oh my goodness me do u think any one can break this lines(only for the fighter plane hangers)?

I'll bet with my life, LTTE cant break in to the fighter plane hangers.

Hope you are correct brother :)
as cheap as this sounds, there was a nice one liner from the movie, pearl harbor
"the smart enemy hits you where exactly you think you are safe"

remember AAB was also a very important air base and we all thought it was well protected until we were proven wrong, quite badly i must say

So was the previous katu bombing.

I'm not saying our guys can't defend these places but history has shown that ltte is indeed smart and effective enough to hit where it hurts and get it spot on right...

  25. matara ayiya,
I agree with you that they probably won't be able to attack the fighter hangars from the ground again with such defences. But there is the possibility that they may launch a suicide attack with their planes (if they are really desperate). Air defences, unless we use very advanced missiles, cannot be relied upon 100%. Even during the WW2, planes managed to make raids and return, despite heavy air defences.

    Defencenet,
Is an aerial suicide attack possible, and how much of a payload can these planes carry, if they are used? Not enough to destroy the reinforced hangars that matara ayiya has mentioned?

the other thing is to maintain ultra high security for the colombo harbor, power stations and reservoirs, financial nerve centers of colombo, bridges etc...
If today's strike is a success chances are that the tigers will try to effect a big blow to us even before them admitting their losses if that's the case...
I've noticed that the harbor security is top notch... i pass that area late nights and early morning and when you enter close to the gates a big ass flood light illuminates you and you can't see shit and the nave personnel manning those points are at full alert...

  34. Defencenet sorry to bring you back to the topic of SABF.. on a previous thread you said

    Romealphafoxtrot,
"Is the SABF and the RSF the same or different?"
SLAF only has the Regiment Special Forces. The only other airborne unit is in the army. It's the air mobile brigade which is an airborne commando unit.

My Question - who are the SABF ? You can see these soldiers near slave island and air force headquaters environs. They patrol these roads regularly and carry Uzi's (I think - type unknown :) ). Once I saw one of them with the tag "SABF Combat team"

A google on SABF brought me only a link on the sunday times website for articles relating to the alleged assualt on Iqbal Athas by SABF soldiers.

So can we assume the SABF is used for ground and VVIP protection? But then why name them Airborne, if the army alone has an airborne brigade ?

Please let us know when you find the time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. yes I agree. I am not talking about commercial air line, hangers or other economically vulnerable point in colombo. I am talking about fighter jets, Hangers and it's safety.surly it's safe in the ground.

As in my view any body can attack colombo air port, aircrafts or facilities without much resistant. Airport is in a big danger with a huge amount of security week points.

As ranil says solders are doing great job. In BIA they are working 6hours and 6hours off continue up to 30 days.(after 30 days they get four day leave)plus they have to do patic, cleaning messes and so on... in there off time. believe me or not in average they are sleeping only three to four hours a day.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "believe me or not in average they are sleeping only three to four hours a day."

isn't that a bad thing to do especially since folks have to be super alert and be responsive with very important tasks.

these guys are just like us and they are not superhumans. IMHO i think it's a bad strategy by military top brass to continue with such rosters.
People need 6hrs of sleep a day, that's how the body is designed... work...
Sleep deprivation will only help the enemy IMHO

  63. srilankan,
"Reading about moneragala...now they have found LTTE camps in moneragala.?."

Actually they are not permanent bases. Just random places such as caves and rock cover which they just use to spend the night.

"This fellow how writes tamilnwt is in norway isnt he?"

No some of its writes are right here in Colombo, working under the guise of 'media'. How do you think Tamilnet gets photographs of bomb incidents so quickly?

    lkdood,
"LTTE claimed yesterday to have killed SLA with snipers
    today SLA have snipers
    is this a coincidence ?"

No its not a coincidence. Use of snipers is not unusual. But claiming you killed 16 and 'wounded' 27 in 3 hours is definitely unusual.

"some sites are experiencing large traffic
thank god Defencenet is working :)"

That's one advantage of having site hosted by Google.

    chamal,
"Is an aerial suicide attack possible, and how much of a payload can these planes carry, if they are used? Not enough to destroy the reinforced hangars that matara ayiya has mentioned?"

It's possible. Payload cant be above the usual they've used. But the plane itself will blow. Even if the walls do hold, jets parked inside may (or may not) receive at least minimal damages due to shock and vibrations if a direct hit is made.

But ground attack teams will be less effective with the current setup SLAF using. As matara ayiya said, around 300 soldiers protect the hangars alone. But we should never forget that LTTE never uses the same strategy twice; they innovate.

    renegade!,
"defencenet, any HOT news on whether we got the BIG,slimy, sluggish Prabha?..atleast give us the news that he's seriously injured.."

Still no confirmation. Even if Prabhakaran escaped, this is still a blow for LTTE. One of their most secure places has been razed to the ground. And there is a good possibility of casualties being from Imran-Pandiyan brigade.
The tip off came from a well placed cell in the LTTE hierarchy. This source is associated with several previous successful eliminations.

    romealphafoxtrot,
"So can we assume the SABF is used for ground and VVIP protection?"
Yes pretty much. RSF is the one mainly used for all special tasks.

"But then why name them Airborne, if the army alone has an airborne brigade ?"
Once they complete airborne training they get the badge. But SABF is rarely used in combat ops and are very few in number.

    maha,
"1.i ve heard from AF that they have carried another sorties in the evening.is that true.after second hit only they have shut the kiili town."
They did not bomb the second time. It was a recon.

"2.foreign int. beleives this is the place they have hide there slins(kurumbaatti).is there a possible to do so.cause its a thick jungle side?"
It's possible. But once again this is not confirmed.

    romealpha,
    "
Guys, how do you prevent some1 else using the same blog display name ?"
In blogger its possible to impersonate. But easily detectable (profile view/ profile URL) and not worth having your IP logged :)

    lkdood,
    "can kifir's or mig's fly @ night ?"
They can. After LTTE air strikes emphasis was given to improve SLAF night flying capability.

    Matara ayya,
Wait until Kfirs return to base before you break the news :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. And thanks all the bloggers for spotting the fake.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Defencenet, Tamilnet says the SLAF carried out two separate air strikes on the facility "between 11:10 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. and in the evening between 5:15 and 6:00 p.m". It'll be nice if they did, to maximize casualties.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Confirmation on Prabha's injuries may or may not be delayed. This is due to the fact that MI cells that are in Wanni heartland need to lie low for the moment. Contacting military command right after the attack can compromise their position.

Any LTTE sympathetic skunk can deny as you want, but all indicators point to something BLOODY UGLY! (well, depends from what perspective – for us it might be BLOODY SWEET!)

Killi's shops closed (do not deny; many reports to that effect) and yes, the hospital is full of wounded/dying LTTE carcass-maggots - as reported by residents (moles who else) there. One has reported seeing whole slew of vehicles rushing to the Killi hospital with armed guards on mo-bikes clearing the way! SLDF knows about this and I am told MI is closely monitoring the developments and further sorties are planned to "break all the limbs of the wounded monster and assure it never stands up!"

It is also reported that LTTE lepers have put into effect extra roadblocks in/out of that area and all indicators point to a major fcukup on the part of LTTE's security/tactical command!

As for what the ICRC so called "senior" bugger said to the "Hindu," that is highly suspect as I am told the question did not even pointedly ask about Killi town, but the bugger has volunteered that info!!! Now doesn't that say something about this likely LTTE “bought-out” bugger?

Apparently, what got the buggers was the sheer size of the attack – 6 SS jets attacking at the same time I hear (never been done before since this ugly war began, spreading the pulverization into a huge area, where the buggers got fried by grossly miscalculating “area of impact”…!!!).

Who gives a fcuk whether we got he filthy Fat Ugly Black Oily Pig from this? He’s a bloody aging, unhealthy bloody walrus whose mental faculties are even not likely working properly today. What matters is to kill the maximum LTTE lepers, with their current command structure “with extreme prejudice” and that’s what the SLAF has done, quite brilliantly, today!

    Bravo SLAF!

  90. Their people who get first hand news seem to be clueless as to what had happened, unless bad news was supressed? There was a tiger contact at a small gathering of Malaysian Tamils, sounds like ‘Thai poosan’festivel where this guy was trying to get their telephone numbers and addresses. I don’t think the Malaysians have much love for them and I asked my host to inquire from him if VP is ok?He said that what he has heard from the internet,T.Nut nor doubt. My host said the guys here are only keen about making money, aren’t to interested to know any thing happening in Vanni. One of their shopkeeper too is uncertain but we will know more when we get back to our offices in the morning.

  92. welcome bak OaOA. we are getting into a pretty serious situ. here if the fat pig is ALIVE! grrrrrrrr

What if in an aggro move kilinochchi is immediately taken by the SLA with air support, MBRLs and commandoes? although hospitals cannot be attacked, all wounded tigers will be forced to be taken elsewhere if the SLA come to killinochchi.

it will also open up a massive centralised battlefront in which many tigers could be killed within a matter of hours, provided ample air cover is provided. the Mannar front will be encircled and will fall like a tinpin.

i know this is a type of an operation 'STF LATIF the Greatest' once embarked upon in Mulaitivu. Bloody risky and bloody rewarding.

in hunting, a wounded animal MUST be killed; same applies to the tiger hunt/cunt.

let go the petrified (if not injured) fat pig, it will be chaos; i tell you.

  93. My comments in a previous thread is coming to light, where in the D.news MR has said that the SF have found a letter in a pocket of a dead female fighter, expressing her dissillusmant with VP and his outfit. As I heard on our trip to Madhu(Trurned away) we met people from Vanni escaping the horror of that place, indicating their anger on the tigers. Also said that the people might turn against the outfit, if and when the SF invade Killinorchi.

  94. There are 5 high-profile funerals in Vanni after the air attack.

Do not know the names yet.

LTTE can not hide many things now. It is better they come out.

The Doctors were rushed from their quarters and one Doctor had to come from home hurriedly to help. Daily tractor loads of LTTE cadres seems to come to Kilinochchi hospital.

Few Doctors from the hospital are staying closer to FDLs to help injured LTTE cadres.

SLAF may not have done a good job in icing the cake with some FABs.

No news about any civilian casualties. But huge commotion there in Vanni. Any news will be relayed here.

LTTE is expecting any time landing of army through Mullative sea, and has heavily mined the area. Virtually no go for civilians. Large number of Mortar patches have been established from the city itself targeting the beach.

  95. In this attack 24 bombs were dropped and don't know about weights.

As I know this is the second largest attack by the number of bombs. In one occasion 27 bombs were dropped in three times. Can't remember where?

  96. Kevin,

Vanni people are disgusted; they WILL soon revolt against the LTTE for sure. you are right.

when did you go (or attempted to go) to Madhu last?

would very much like to make the pilgrimage someday.

tigers tunred a massive shrine into a forbidden zone; curse them.

  97. The most successful SLAF attack was in August 1995 where hundreds of tigers perished (their bodies were found) and burried. their attack on welioya, etc. SLA camps were saved.

i remeber it was 3 K-8s that were used (??) Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera was also involved (??)

  100. Kevin, the letter story is true. It was even aired in local tv. There wont be any sea/air landings on mulaithiv kilinochchi any time soon. Moshe, majority of ltte casualties in 1995 weli oya battle were due to ground forces retaliation. Janaka perera lead the attack.

  103. Dear DefenceNet,
Many thanks for your comments. The reason for the moneragala question was..if these guys have used secret locations to create their camps only known to people living in the area..then that is definitely either LTTE have been there for ages or Definite local help. But thankgod..it is not the case

We tried to get to Madhu in Oct '07 but turned away by the SF and we had to turn back, but we will try next August. We were only 40 miles from Madhu and few people were getting out and to stop this the terrorists have moved the settlers from the boarder areas to interior, perhaps to place them near targets. We protested about this inhuman act to some UN people drinking at the Mount Lavinia beach.

That could be the reason why VP’s wife left the Vanni a few weeks ago, perhaps by a helicopter to India. If it is so, I wonder who supplied that Helicopter? Perhaps I may be wrong?
