Suicide attack kills four civilians - Jaffna

Meanwhile four black tigers were arrested by Vavuniya police in Irattaperiyakulam on the 27th of this month. Preliminary investigations have revealed that these cadres were on a mission to eliminate a VVIP. The arrest was made after a senior LTTE cadre who was arrested in Colombo revealed the whereabouts of the tiger team. The suspect also revealed that four other black tigers from the same team were sent to Kandy on another mission. According to his information, the tiger team was residing in the 'Le Kandyan' hotel in Heerassagala, Kandy. A police team was immediately dispatched to arrest these cadres. However the tigers had vacated the hotel before the police could make the arrest. Police later found out that the four suspects had used fake identities and had claimed they were millionaire businessmen when they made the reservation at the hotel.

This is just two weeks (as i remember)after the second attack to colombo by ltte planes.Even tamilnet published artical about handing over the DPU's bodies to army at that time. you can search it from tmail net. As i remember it says about 15 bodies.

I don't know about LTTE helicopters. May be diffencenet does.
But some one told me before capturing sampur everyday they see two man lightweight helicopters flying over sampur. they are at trincomally and between sampur and trincomaly is about 15km directly(Air miles). That is peace talk time and no one did nothing except Navi's east commander(at that time) wasantha karannagoda.

That incident is largely true. But there are minor errors. Those who were killed were from the 3SF, not from the main LRRP unit. There were about 10 kia and LTTE did not defeat them in battle. Anyways after the incident tigers relocated their base in Vilpaththu.

  51. moshe,
Maybe this way is at least better than charging ahead and getting into another debacle like Muhamale last time. It will tire the LTTE and their cadres will be weary from the continuous attacks, and they do suffer a lot of damage despite not losing territory. Maybe it will get them (I mean the cadres manning the FDL not their top level leaders) into a false sense of security thinking that army is not going to advance, and they will be relaxing. Let's just be patient, this is a war.... we don't know what the top brass is thinking, we are not military experts, but you can bet that they are not doing it for fun.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Moshe.. i think the idea behind destroying these bunkers is partly to tie down a lot of cadres in rebuilding bunkers and also to force LTTE to deploy a large force in preparation for the next attack..I could be wrong but i think a single cadre cant be everywhere at any one time. Also destroying bunkers exposes the cadres so that hopefully army snipers can have a field day..Also i am not sure if defense.lk is stating all the facts for operational reasons..not that we want to know. The security of our beloved army is paramount. My god but compared to the past ...what a change for the best its unbelieveable!!

Is there a risk of LTTE trying to shooy down a Sri Lankan airlines aircraft? Seems to me that it is unlikely as it will kill a lot foreigners as well, which would of course build a great pressure from international community towards LTTE. 64. SRI LANKA ARMY firmly and categorically refutes pro-LTTE media reports that shed crocodile tears on alleged “dumping of tractor loads of dead soldiers”, “hospitalization of hundreds of injured soldiers”, “non-conduct of military funerals or proper funerals,” etc with special emphasis given to Mannar sector where Tiger terrorists are almost on the run.

Those reports, published with sinister moves using Machiavellian methods are desperately intent on infusing disappointment, outrage and demoralization among members of the Security Forces as well as their next of kin and the general public. In short, it is calculated intentionally to mar ongoing offensives by way of a psychological manoeuvre.

Troops of the Army and the Security Forces, as reputed professional organizations have mustered whole-hearted support and appreciation of the masses and are currently marching forward to salvage thousands of trapped Tamil civilians from the dictates of the terrorist outfit. Sacrifices being made by valiant troops in the battlefield are held in high esteem, not only by their respective services but also by millions of patriotic and peace loving people in the country. Their supreme sacrifice cannot be and need not be shrouded in mystery under any circumstances because death of a fellow-soldier in an operation is known to one another. The Army has neither wanted to “under report” its casualty figures at a time when the troops were triumphantly marching forward with the least casualties. Needles to repeat, fabricated and hypothetical reportages of this nature therefore do not hold water and are an integral part of the terrorist propaganda mill.

  73. renegade,

I think the operation by the SLA is a brilliant strategic move.
destroying and withdrawing to our FDL s would mean that the LTTE would have to move in and refortify the FDL again. Now we have shown that we can overthrow their lines so they have to bring in more resources to ensure the safety of the FDL. Furthermore, If the SLA was to move the FDL forward this would push the LTTE back and increase the troop concentration around Elephant Pass. making an assault on the base even harder. the more ground the tigers hold the thinner they are stretched.
Plus the psychological Advantage of this victory need not be stressed. Think of what it would have done to the moral of the tigers in and around EP.
I think the real push for EP will begin once mannar and Vavuniya have or almost fallen.

R2P could provide the legal basis for SLDF actions - only needs some bright lawyer to draw up the papers and file in our local courts or even pass something in Parliament. It's time we turned some of the IC tactics to our advantage.

DefenceNet, I heard that the last shipment of fuel from the GOSL to Wanni was stopped at checkpoint and something accidentally fell into the fuel. Any truth behind this?

On another note, maybe we could also arrange to leave behind some parting consolation prizes, the next time we visit the LTTE FDL's.

  84. Guys,

Don't be downbeat about military achievements regarding Muhamalai and Nagarakovil. If you need a bit of consolation, think of the period between Vakarai victory and Thoppigala capture.

The above gap was an ideal platform for scare-mongers, international conspirators with an agneda of their own and of course our own UNP'ers to pour scorn on the government and the armed forces. After Thoppigala capture, things changed.

We became meloncholic again after the Anuradhapura attack. But the demise of Thamil Chelvan changed all that.

Likewise, the army will move on to the victory. I think they have plans; they don't appeal to our heads at this stage. But they know better than us.

As for the casualties of civilians - including children - I saw heart-breaking pictures of the injured and the killed. It is certainly not a deliberate act, but shows the hall marks of an accidental mishap. Civilians - especially women and children - must be protected in a bit more vigorous manner. It is not because of international community; they are just hypocrites anyway. On the contrary, becasue of moral obligations.

I do not think this is a suicide attack. If there is a place to easily set a bomb in srilanka it would be jaffna. Then why they have to make it a suicide bomb?

when/where can we expect the next bomb attack?

    ReplyDelete
  87. also on that same note, when/where can we expect the SLA to bury the next SLA bodies?

We know that one place is been tipped to TAMILNET (SLA dumps dead soldiers in the stretches of Arippu)

We need to find better, secret areas where no one has access. This is very important. I hear the LTTE seniors shoot down light ltte infantry if they retreat without thier orders. Can we implement that in SLA as well?

So please ignore my question. These places need to be top secret.

SLA can win this war maintaining 200K is the key. I hope the IC does not intervene. Then it will be a mess again.

  88. I am not sure I understand the day to day tactical situations with the Army destroying the FDL and withdrawing. The bunkers are built with coconut tree logs and sand bags. It is not difficult for the LTTE to rebuild these structures. The forces are obviously working towards a long term plan. We can see some elements of the plan. The naval cordon to prevent the LTTE from being resupplied seems to be working well. Looks like the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard have finally joined the act. I also agree with Iqbal Aththas to a certain extent when he says that it is illogical to defeat the LTTE and not hold any territory, especially in strategically important areas. In any event, the LTTE does not have the manpower to sustain this conflict beyond this year. With fighting on so many fronts, they can't launch any large scale offensive actions nor are they able to predict where the big push is going to come from.

There is an interesting satellite photo on Flickr. It may be an underground structure or simply a logging operation.

  90. Some guys think that some of my comments which should not be published in a public forum. There may be truth in it. So i decided to be less active here.

Team who attacked to Anuradhapura airbase have many plans but they cannot achieve some of their plans due to brave coupral in SLAF such as putting a tiger flag on the top of the control tower, go to pilots billets and kill them (pilot didn't have weapons at there billets),Hijack a MI24 and so on...

Coupral which i am talking is done his duties on the control tower. He is a well trained sniper. While the attack was going on he recognized SLAF men and tigers correctly by far as 1.5km-2.0km. At that time it's very difficult to recognize them even with the night vision because both are wearing same uniforms, dark background (night vision is not up to the stands)and the distance. And he started to shoot them one by one until finishing his bullets. he had only 15 bullets only(SLAF sniper gunners ordered to take only 15 bullets ). After 30-40 minites he manage to kill 8 of them and wounding another 2(later suicide them).

If you read any given sniper guns specifications it says maximum range is only 800m-1200m. But this guy is manage to shoot by far as 1.5km. It is very difficult to hit moving targets at windy nights(wind is the biggest problem). As I think this guy save Anuradapura camp.

So if u r his officer what should u do to him?

He is still working in anuradapura camp and never appreciate by a senior officer. I think this guy should have promotion and medal from the SLAF chief. Now he is having leave problem. All of them are going only 4 days leave for 30 days continues work.

Japan is Sri Lanka's largest foreign donor, giving about $9bn in grants, loans and aid since 1985, including around $400m in 2007.

Calling for a negotiated settlement, the Japanese envoy said that the donor nations ban on the LTTE has made it difficult.

    "Demonising the Tigers "

Japan has refused to brand the Tamil Tigers as terrorists despite similar prohibitions by the United States, European Union and India.

This guy is a badman, he just says its not good to ban the tigers, but he is providing the max help to SL govt.

400M is critical in maintaining 200K

I think he is just making those statements just for the public. Inside he would want to crush the LTTE himself too.

Please keep writing. As the others have said your posts are very interesting to read.

Ths story about the air force corporal is a incredible story. He should get an award and a promotion. It is sad that he was only given 15 bullets. It shows the lack of contingency planning. I am surpised that no senior officers responsible for base security have been court marshalled for dereliction of duty or negligence. In 2006, after the LTTE attack on the navy bus, the Defence Secretary removed the Navy Commander within a few days. In 1991 Corporal Gamini Kularatne saved the elephant pass base when he single handedly destroyed a LTTE armored vehicle. I think now that the army is now responsible for base security for all air force bases, hopefully this situation will not happen again.

Gamini is a hero no dought about it.Even president is visiting his mother time to time. Air force guy at least kill 8 out of 21. Every one should give same credits for him.But he is got blames for missing and wasting five bullets because he is one of the two snippers in the camp.

Bullet proof jackets being transported to tigers seized
    (LankaTruth: 31st January 2008 07:25 S.L.T )

A stock of bullet proof jackets being transported to Killinochchi by an NGO has been seized by Madawachchiya Police. The bullet proof jackets were cleverly concealed in a lorry carrying food to Killinochchi by the NGO called SOLIDA.

The SOLIDA Movement (Support for Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily) is a Human Rights organization founded in Paris in 1996 and is a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Network of Human Rights (REMDH). In May 2006, SOLIDA, which has always operated in Europe while regularly carrying out fact-finding missions in Lebanon, opened its office in Beirut.

Medawachchiya Police has found 68 bullet proof kits in the lorry and further investigations are being held.

Thank you for bringing attention about the heroics of the Air Force sniper, however your view of the picture isn't entirely correct. The sniper killed only 3 LTTE carders. The reason is he did not have night vision, he shot them when the aircrafts caught fire/exploded and lighted up the area. The balance 5 of the eight panicked at this point most probably assuming the air force personal were after them and bunched together and blew themselves up. It is not the sniper who saved/rescued the base, it was the SF units which arrived with their CO, who planned and lead the attack against the LTTE. They completely wiped out the balance carders without even a simple scratch. Also a small note, certain aspects of weaponry used for this operation by the tigers were far superior and advanced, the army was baffled at this point as they had never seen such advanced 'equipment'.

The only reason I commented was the fact that the SF who are the real hero's never get the attention and credit they deserve.

  153. SLA dumps dead soldiers in the stretches of Arippu
    [TamilNet, Wednesday, 30 January 2008, 17:34 GMT]
Sri Lanka Army in Mannaar, while under-reporting their casualties in the fighting, has been dumping tractor-loads of dead soldiers in the delta of Aruvi Aa'ru (Malwattu Oya), the area emptied of people after capturing it from the LTTE last year. Two Sri Lanka Army soldiers, escaping from the battlefield with the help of local residents have said that their fellow troopers killed in the battle were being dumped near a coconut palm grove at Ooral, a locality 1 km south of Aruvi Aa'ru and few kilometers east of the coastline between Arippu and Chilaavatturai.

Hundreds of wounded SLA soldiers were sent to various hospitals in the adjacent district headquarters and in the South while their fellow soldiers who died in the battlefield did not receive military honors or proper funeral, reportedly according to instructions from the top.

The dead are included in the list of deserted soldiers.

Medical sources in Mannaar, Anuradhapura and Vavuniyaa, while confirming that many wounded soldiers have been brought in for treatment, indicated that dead bodies of soldiers were brought in only rarely.

The dead bodies were transported in tractors through Uyilangku'lam junction from the battlefield to the banks of Aruvi Aa'ru.

  180. By the way, back to the helicopters of LTTE....I first came to know about LTTE helicopters back in around the years between 1992-1996. Reports of LTTE helicopters flying over SL, and SL army were told not to shoot any of them . Thought I just put that out there.

  181. @sl,

As i belive these are just edditored picture. As somebody says enlarge 500% . And see right side. U can see the difference.

ltte planes never keep like this. Ltte always put there planes in underground bunkers and if plane's taken outside for a little period of time they cover with a camouflage cover.

Do u think LTTE are this stupid to keep outside there valuable "kurumbatti" planes without any camouflage?

I am not a military expert and this is what i am think.
If some one died in a battle field it should be reported to his or her family. If army is not telling the truth and dumping bodies in rivers then
1.What is army going to tell in coming months about him to their families.
    2.where is salary goes?
3.If a family member phone above solider what is army going to say?

These are complete lies by tamilnut. LTTE does this because ltte are not responsible for anyone .
As a responsible army can dump their soldiers bodies to a river?

  185. @spencer.....

This is what iqbal athas says about the incident.

"The kudos for a brave response went to an Air Force corporal who stood atop the air traffic control tower and used a sniper rifle with night scope to knock down guerrillas one after the other. This prevented the first group from reaching two Mi-17s that lay parked further away from the Mi-24s. When this was going on, some of the intruders had triggered off their "suicide" belts and killed themselves."

Mate, that was a marvelous piece of detection work (in the other thread) that exposed the LTTE motherfcukers' seemingly clever propaganda to demoralize the SL population (especially Sinhelas) so that recruitment to SLDF will dry up! Man, you are indeed a smart cookie...I wish our MI had guys like you!

Keep up the good work bro...
